The people who did the New Edition story should've done this...and about the whole DeBarge family. This looks like a Sunday afternoon Lifetime production with bad wigs.
I heard I know Bobby story when I saw this it broke my heart. Yes they could have done a better job with the casting and they could have done a better job going into the abuse. This serves as a cautionary tale about what not to raise kids with. Robert DeBarge senior was an evil man and he deserves to burn in hell what he did to those babies! Fortunately they had children to pick up the torch that they dropped. God bless that beautiful family hopefully that fire that was in Bobby's blood burns in this new generation of the family. Thank God they're there to give a second chance at DeBarge music.
But between over the top acting, and hair pieces that look like they belong in a comedy skit, this did his story a disservice. In fact the whole family deserves better.
@@jonesfredrick94 Your comment regarding Tyler Perry comes at a time in my life when I am researching many TP creative offerings because I have an article in mind about those offerings. Perry is a producer, creator, writer, and director who can actually appeal to any and all socio-economic/education levels in the Black community. While I am not a fan of Medea because she actually flies in the face of what I remember back in the day as Big Momma's and the MuDear's, Perry creates characters with whom anyone and everyone can resonate. I think he also allows his stereotypes to see themselves as others see them; the jester, the joke...Perry's movies are exemplary because they appeal to an eclectic group of viewers. While I am not a fan of some of his more self-deprecating tropes, I get why he includes these images...he smartly presents a little something for everybody. Alex Cross, The Family That Preys are examples of TP's that definitely impress me as an emergent writer and a movie lover.
I wanted more out of this film. His childhood, his parents, SWITCH, the family and a whole lot more should have been portrayed. It should have been a miniseries bottom line. They deserve that because they made platform for a lot of entertainers now and got no recognition. They said that the project would of been longer but it would have been worth the wait. I feel that Roshon Fegan did an excellent job along with other actors but it need more. The Debarge family deserve that
damn right. you can't even count the people that have sampled their music. They deserve much better. The only thing I learned from the movie is that Bobby dated LaToya and Jermaine told him to stay away from her.
To be honest, I think everyone in this movie did a wonderful job, especially Roshon portraying the beautiful, gifted and legendary Bobby DeBarge. ❤ The entire family went through some terrible things at the hands of their monstrous father, with Bobby taking it the worse. I'm glad his story is being told, showing us some of the terrible things he endured in his life, along with the hearts he have touched with his beautiful voice and music. I loved this. ❤🙏🏾
This movie is going to be a cult classic!!! Every actor deserves kudos... I am 71 and getting ready to watch it for a third time. The writing is pretty damned good as well...the dialogue is top-shelf...that conversation between grown Bobby and Etterlene about the sexual abuse is an award-winning piece of work.
When telling a story, have those who lived it involved in every aspect ! The team that wrote & produced the New Edition movie should've been hired to do this. This could've easily been a 5-6 part, 2 hour a night special. Soooo much was left out !
The Debarge story as a whole deserved so much more than this poorly put together, cheap production of a film. Bobby definitely deserved more than this. Shame on Russ and TV One!!!
I grew up in,DeBarge era..was a huge fan..had the posters..I enjoyed the movie..interesting...I,luv them,as a family.....and was shocked to find out later how tramatic their lives were..behind the scenes. We sometimes look at stars as stars...and never think they can fall....but as a whole their music did touch lives..around the world...their music helped me deal with my first heart break...So they reached people..I,luv DeBarge* .
This is one the worst biography I've seen..Growing up in that era knowing the story this was half done..Unsung Switch episode is more accurate...Plus the facts more true..To me this was awful and a waste of time...
Me & my sister said the exact same thing. It wasn't so much about Bobby, then it was about the entire family.I think it was terrible.Got me all hyped up 4 nothing
Can't believe the songs, "They'll Never Be & Love Over and Over" were not played at some time during the movie, them songs made Switch and Bobby Debarge household names.
This was a NO. Aside from it looking very cheap, I was also upset that there wasn't more focus on Switch, which was the biggest part of Bobby's career. We only heard from Greg.... Philip, Jody and Eddie were only in one silent scene. Why?? This was rushed and not well done at all.
This should have been a film with a huge budget not a TV movie because Bobby, his group and his family are so complicated and incredibly talented. They have made an enormous impact musically and culturally that they and their fans deserve more. They had style and didn't deserve to be represented with cheap makeup and Thunder Cat wigs🤬. I swear sometimes we do our artists so tacky.
The wig bobby was wearing was extremely distracting!!! I don't understand how it was so difficult to get his soft afro together. Step it up tv one. Congrats Loyd.
I used to think about immature things You know like, do you love me? Do you want me? Are you gonna call me like you said you would? Is this really your real phone number? But you know I'm a man now, baby, a grown man And I came a long way, he-he And experience taught me one thing Taught me to hold on to my love Sometimes I just can't help thinkin' livin' without you, baby See, sometimes, I just can't live cryin' about you, baby I'm not worried 'bout a doggone thing I'll take anything you bring Although I love the sunshine I'll still accept rain Cause when I'm in my lonely mood And I just can't be with you I tried everything to occupy my mind And there was no substitute Thinking all that life would be When you're not around I just could not find my way I wouldn't even know up from down But since I've had you in my life All thing can be found So strong and true, baby All comin' from you You, I call your name, girl (Whenever I am lonely, baby) I call your name (When I feel the need of love) I think of you, and it eases the pain Take away the strain Cause I don't worry what my people say In my life today Although they try to say you're not the one for me I'll love you anyway Cause their intentions might be cool If what they say was true But there's more to you than they could ever see And they don't even know you Thinking all that life would be When you're not around I just could not find a way I wouldn't even know up from down But since I've had you in my life All things can be found So strong and true, baby Comin' from you, you, you, you, you You, I call your name, girl (Sometimes when I get lonely, baby) I call your name (When I feel the need of love) I think of you and it eases the pain Take away the strain You, I call your name, girl (Sometimes I get lonely, baby.
Nobody knew who Bobby Debarge was and he is getting finally recognition. And movie maybe not perfect but before it there was nothing!! And people come on here to hate. Why???
Movie was a B minus I would have loved to see the start and grind of making switch in the beginning and wanted to know more about Bobby’s bisexual behavior
CiCi Johnson he was bi sexual he dated Letoya Jackson but also was involved with men what puzzles me is what did he contract HIV from the men or the heroin
Yeh I get it but he didn't get new edition budget filming so he had to make it work..it did what it was supposed to..now you get his new music being released...
@@deandreray3500 Bobby Debarge became HIV positive from intravenous drug use. He was diagnosed with full blown Aids prior to going to prison. According to family members and friends Bobby was definitely bisexual and had several relationships with men and women during his life.
You did an AMAZING job, once i got past those bad wigs, i think everybody did GREAT, this movie took me out and made me care about Bobby Debarge story who i wasnt even familiar with before, yall made me care about his story, which was extremely sad. R.I.P. Bobby Debarge!!
As a teen, people used to say i resembled one of the DeBarge family.Iol...I really enjoyed the movie. It's always interesting to see the pain that many of our great artist go through.Made me think about the book that's inside of me.I thought the actors did their thing. They didn't sound like they were reading.Brought out my emotions as a fan of DeBarge,so they did their job.Thumbs up!
You're not the only one. Even I was told by 2 RU-vidrs that I look like El DeBarge when they saw my profile pic! THAT WAS THE BEST REMARK I EVER GOT! I sang 2 DeBarge songs on Karaoke in front of lots of people and I even sounded like El! THEY ALL LOVED MY SINGING! I sang "All This Love" and "Rhythm Of The Night" on Karaoke!
Couldn't disagree more. Being old enough to see them live, this was campy, and poorly done. Bad casting, acting and wigs. Sad. Because his is a great story. This looked so low budget.
It’s millions of light skin men without bell pepper noses that sing and some great lace front wigs. There is no reason this movie just could not have been better? Switch is one of the greatest and most memorable groups of R/B. This is the story we’ve been waiting on forever! They did history a disservice.
This movie was terrible. It appears rushed, thrown together and clearly lacked in budget. TVone did a good job promoting it but that’s the only thing they did a good job at. The only good thing about this movie is that they were allowed to use the actual recordings of the music. Bad acting, bad hair and missing storylines. Bobby DeBarge wasn’t a huge mega star, but he deserved better than this! Just my opinion.
If anyone starts a fund to get this story done right, count me in! There are millions of Debarge fans and if we all just contribute $1, we will have enough money to do a biopic that gives this family the respect it deserves.
They should have shown Bobby before the drugs. And since Bobby's wife was over the movie, she had her character looking better than all the other female characters.
I haven’t seen the movie but in my opinion based off just a few pics I’ve seen of Bobby DeBarge in his older years..I would’ve loved to have seen Mr Laz Alonso😍😍 play the role of Bobby 🤷🏾♀️
The New Edition biopic was better. The Bobby DeBarge biopic omitted segments. It should have been done in parts. And if there is going to be wailing, I better see tears! I don't want a R. Kelly act!
Narcissists complain about everything but the messages...💯💯💯 "we don't like the movie, we didn't like the wigs, we don't like the actors, we dont like the set, other series were better", etc... Always on social media expressing how *THEY* feel...👍👍👍
Is complaining a true characteristic of a narcissist? If so, I guess I’m a narcissist, and I can live with this! I can only ascertain by your verbiage that you enjoyed the movie- acting, hair and makeup, the script, the overall production, no? I’m glad I didn’t feel the need for name calling because you share a different opinion.
I really don't want to be critical bc I'm sure it took a lot to make this movie and I'm sure like many others I've been waiting a long time for a movie about the Debarge family and all the dynamics from the siblings to the parents and their surroundings and the people that touched their lives and just what made them do what they have done to get to where they have gone( I just love biographies and documentaries)but I didn't like it at all. It felt like so many things were missing about Bobby's life! I definitely could not get past those wigs. To me the best part of the movie was the end when the actor who played Bobby was at the piano and singing to his wife that song felt so heart felt and beautiful and it like Bobby was finally coming through the tv screen ❤️
THIS MOVIE WAS SOME BS FOR REAL. Some good actors but I think they did not put a lot of thought into how Bobby’s life really was.. I can’t believe his family did not speak up before they put it out there to be seen by the public , because this was terrible they made him look really bad...
The worst movie ever. It portrayed Bobby DeBarge in a negative light. He wasn’t the arrogant and loud person like the actor played in the movie. His wife was one of the producers. She should know better. This movie is a disgrace to Bobby DeBarge and the DeBarge family as a whole.
Miss Spirituality I didn’t say they made him look bad, I said they told stories that sounded like he was arrogant. Such as refusing to perform because his family members had a hard time getting in to a show. Traveling in between shows to the doctor’s so he can get his prescription codeine so he can keep getting high and barely making back in time to perform. Wilding out openly with homosexuals and had ppl thinking the whole group was gay and didn’t care when asked to tone it down. And he pulled a David Ruffin. And when his boss ( Berry Gordy) told him that the lyrics needed to be changed on the third album Bobby told him, ‘I’m not changing nothing’ and then Motown didn’t promote the album. This came from the members and Bobby pissed them all off, they loved him but according to them they had enough of him. But now since they weren’t contacted for the film, Bobby wasn’t all that bad. But on another note I hate when biography films have fictitious characters.
They should of focus on more of his music and his falsetto to me I think they just put one song of his in there they should of did like la Bamba even Richie had just a couple songs they put it together well Bobby had alot more songs
I didn't watch the movie, but on a more important note...I could've sworn Russ Parr died a few years ago!! Not his sister...HIM! I remember them saying it on "The Tom Joyner Morning Show"! This Mandela Effect is something else, ain't it?! LAWD!
Hugely disappointing to find out the living family had no input or participation in making the film. Surprising tidbit re Russ Parr who seems thorough and detailed. That halted my desire to watch but I will eventually because I'm obsessed with them and pray for their peace and strength.
pretty decent movie of the than the licks linking part was horrible y'all should have found some actors that do hot to lip sync other than that the movie was okay and the wigs were freaking creepy as hell too
Yeah, I didn't wanna watch it because I love the whole family of DeBarge, and this needed a great production/director(s) backing it! Its not a unique story, but it was uniquely theirs and it needed to be told in a great way! BET or VH1 should have done this, and made go to a bigger audience! Russ Parr I love, but I just wasn't drawn into this, or wanted to see it! Their Unsung was better than this! Now please Russ Parr leave The Sylvers story all the way a lone! 💯💯💯💯💯 I'm sad about this! I feel bad for the DeBarge family to have this played out for them like this! Edit: I always seen Bruno Mars as Bobby DeBarge. 💯
@@geegeepie468 really, how old are you? You sound like a kid. But if you are an adult, you are very immature calling people names because they didn't like a movie. Now go somewhere and play and stay out of grown folks business.
Did the family give Clearance for them to do a movie about his brother that's my first question number two were.. they at the premiere when this movie came out and last but not least you could tell the budget was very low but I'm glad we're learning about the oldest brother because he was the one that spearheaded the DeBarge family to come to the mainstream so for that he should always be acknowledged
