Was sitting 2 rows back from Keano at ipox when the Celtic humped the huns...he was really enjoying himself...no wonder with that Celtic choir going at it non stop with our anthems😆😆😆
Every time Denis Irwin comes up. “Denis Irwin, oh imagine if Dennis was playing today. Play left back, right back. Get you a goal, knows how to defend. And he never gets injured. Brilliant player”
@@julianbanks1885 So what, it doesn't make it better. Now everyone dives for nothing, and everyone cares about the numbers and ratings. Cristiano would be retired if he had suffered only one kick from the butchers of Maradona's era.
Loved that. Many people falsely think Zidane was just this magical flair player, and yes he was that, but every player who ever went up against him marveled at his physicality, frame and the way he used his body
The old midfielders were miles better, Keane, Figo, Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta, scholes, Pirlo, Vieira, Ronaldinho, Ballack, Seedorf and Makalele.. to name a few!! These guys would tear the midfielders of today a new arsehole!
Makalele, Ballack, don’t forget Lampard. Essien was another top class midfielder from that Chelsea era. Also, Alonso, Gattuso, Kaka, Guti, Davids, etc. Miles ahead of any current midfielders for sure
Been saying for the last few years that there's far less world class playing nowadays compared to 16- 20 years ago. Especially when you consider defenders - back then you had Maldini, Nesta, Puyol, Hierro, Ayala, Stam, Ferdinand, Thuram, Campbell just to name a few off the top of my head. Compare that to nowadays.
Simon Curtis I’m a Liverpool fan and I still see Lampard as world class. The ability he had to arrive late in the box to score, he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen to do it. Might not be as good as some of the rest, but certainly fits in in that list anyways
He commands respect when he speaks. Honest, straight forward, no BS. This man was next to SAF when it comes to influence he had on United. Him and Viera competing for the league every year, treat to watch. Actually made the premier league iconic, we watch and enjoy today
As a Liverpool fan I am always riveted when Roy Keane speaks. A great player and a brilliant pundit, he just says it as it is. Shame he never played for my beloved LFC.
Definitely love to listen to Keane regularly. It's the wisdom of experience, the way he pulls us back to times where players generally gave it all for the clubs. Obviously, the feeling is underlined with having seen him play in his time. And the accent, just makes it magical.
Keano would rather die on the pitch than loosing. Priceless player This made me realise how football has changed over the years. Believe it or not he is one of the greatest player to ever wear a united shirt
why does seedorf rarely get a mention? He was a bit before my time but from what ive seen he was incredible and whenever theres a charity maych with ex pros he's always the best player on the pitch
They're right. With defenders being coached to play from the back and be more comfortable on the ball, full backs are bombing forward, these roles have overlapped the midfielders. Midfielders need to be more versatile in the modern game with fluidity, transition etc. Even Kante, who you'd class as a CDM finds himself playing further ahead for France and Chelsea than he did at LCFC. I'd also say the world class players Roy played with, CRonaldo, Schmichael, Scholes, Giggs. Great analysis of Irwin as well...a fellow Corkman lol
I love how Roy Keane finishes answering a question about ultimate midfield partners - by raving about how Dennis Irwin was a world class full back. Fair play Roy
His partnership with Scholes is legendary but I gotta say for all their rivalry at the time, a midfield pivot of Keane and Vieira would’ve been insane 😂
I’m a Liverpool fan but we need more players like Keano in the modern game. I play in college and if you take a boot to the ankle or an elbow to the face you’re expected to get on with it. I think it’s an issue that needs to be solved with the players and the refs but it’s only at the professional level where u don’t see this brand of football being played where u treat it like a war and if u take a knock u put ur head down and keep fighting
As a Liverpool fan & fellow countryman of Keano, I feel that he should’ve won the World player of the year in 1999, he out played the midfield of Juve which consist of Zidane, Davids & Dechamps. I think. Also I seen him & Irwin play for Ireland many times quality player’s. I think both were very underestimated especially Irwin. But keep up the good work Keano 👍🏻🇮🇪☘️
The Balon d'or points didn't make any sense that year. Pavel Nevned was fantastic that year. Keane won the PFA player of the year and the United player of the year and Beckham even finished above him in the rankings.
@@barryb90 That's because journalists vote in the Ballon d'Or and most of them haven't got a clue about football. Also, what you win has a big impact on where you finish in the rankings. You could be having a ok season but if you win the league and the Champions League, or maybe even the World Cup or a Euros, that'll massively increase your chances. The FIFA World Player of the Year back in the day, nowadays the FIFA Best award are more accurate because players and managers vote in those.
Love how Roy keeps it real. Average football fan would laugh at the names Speed, Rob Lee, David Batty but if Roy tell you they were tough you listen and know they were difficult to play against. Everybodies too concerned with whos "World Class" these days.
The midfields of 1998 to 2002/5 were very tough. The bayern midfield with effenberg, deportivo with djaminha, madrid with Redondo, Milan with gattuso etc... some of today's midfields wdnt get a sniff.
Loved the Denis Irwin mention at the end - criminally underrated player. Ashley Cole gets all the plaudits/mentions in Premier League "all time" lists, but Irwin's consistency and longevity were outstanding. Probably our best ever left back.
When I grew up I despised toy keane. Hated him. And yet when he dies I'll shed a tear because he is the last of an era. A proper footballer from a time before the money took something away. A proper football man. Fantasic pundit and story teller.
As an Arsenal fan I have to say I have a huge amount of respect for Roy. I guess he is one of the few world class players of his era who actually speaks the truth.
To be fair, as G. Neville would say, back in his day teams probably generally only played with two central midfielders. Therefore these players should be very good and had a lot of responsibility as it was only them two in the middle of the pitch. They had attacking and defensive responsibilities. In the modern game most teams play with three central midfielders (or even more) with different variations and there is a lot more strategy in today's game.
Really enjoying Keane speak here and in the other segments. I agree with him about the role of the modern midfielders. If you have seen my comments from elsewhere, I am not impressed with the quality of midfiielders or the roles they now have defined in many teams. Almost an allowed abdication of responsibility in terms of providing assists and scoring goals.
Im an LFC fan but cud listen to roy keane all day long , respect for this guy hes a legend of the game world class in every sense!!!! Carragher is the number 1 pundit tho haha
Love Keane keeps it real. True what he said players have a good month and season then all of a sudden your world class be consistent for 3 to 5 years plus then you can't start saying your world class
Over a 100 easy. Great at LB and RB. Great at set pieces. Great at his movement up and down the pitch. Agents and astronomical transfer fees have ruined football.
For that era Irwin was one of the best but Ashley Cole imo changed how left backs are they need to be speedy and almost second wingers hence why Liverpool and city do so well and United are struggling with fat Shaw and inverted Ashley young
@Lol Xd don't be so deluded he is terrible can't go forward can't get back constantly injured and not fit plus he's got the personality full of nerves no wonder Mourinho practically had to bully him to play better
I never thought in my wildest dreams that, as a Chelsea supporter all of my life and having lived through the 90s when Roy was playing, that I'd be listening to him talk about football on daily basis😂😂😂 Legend, world class player and a best pundit Sky's ever had. Well, besides Chris Kamara😂
The game against Juventus was the best captain's performance I've ever seen, weirdly the only other that I have seen that comes close is Beckham against Greece.
Zidane was one of the best midfielders of all time, Keane Calling him a nasty player reminds me of the times I used to say he looks like an hitman. He was magical on the ball, he had this innate ability to make a short pass look amazing. I've only seen Pirlo as another player who comes close to doing that
Irwin top class knowbody ever mentioned him before till Keane says cus all these other pundits like to talk about the most expensive players all the time
It’s great that Roy gives props to Batty and Speed. I think Roy, although he didn’t like Leeds, considered them a great club with loads of passion, embodied by speedo and batts. I’m a big Leeds fan true, but the rivalry with Man U is STILL a cornerstone of English football. In truth I find that man United and Leeds fans are extremely similar. What separates them is total civic pride. Roy knows Leeds will ALWAYS be relevant, regardless what league they are in.
Denis Irwin was so underated he was extraordinarily good he could tackle cross defend attack set pieces great header of the ball for a small guy. He would walk into any team in europe now never mind the premiership and not just at left back either.
The rise of these phenomenal wing-backs is covering for the shortcomings of average midfielder players. Keane, Gerrard, Lampard, Viera... could do it all. Ball winners, playmakers, goal scorers, and got up and down the pitch to cover for their full-backs too. Now players like Robbo, Trent, Walker, Shaw, Marcelo etc are bombing forward and covering for themselves in defense too!
Kevin de Bruyne is the only one, he will track back one moment and pop up in the number 10 role the next move. Plus he has that work rate combined with the quality to make it pay. He is a top player but more of a rare thing now.
There are still some very good central midfielders around: Kante, Verratti, Modric, Kroos, Fernandino, Busquets, De Jong, Fabinho, etc, but the guys are right, up until recently, we had quality and quantity (the same can be said for centre backs), whereas today we have very few outstanding 'engine room' players. There are a lot of good attacking central midfielders, but not all that many when it comes to the art of defending. It's a lot easier for forwards these days.
Pundits and their nostalgic analysis about how the game used to be...In my humble opinion, for all of his discipline and leadership on the field, I would never pick Keane ahead of Kante Kroos Rakitic Pjanic or Modric. You got to understand that Keane was surrounded by a world class squad. I'd love to see him in nowadays united team, if he would make more of a difference than Pogba. Seriously doubt it.
I agree with you, all this nostalgia about players and downplaying the current players has become a trend. There will be always some people saying " today's players are nothing compared to the players back in my day". They just don't wanna admit that there'll be always some great players in every era...
LM 10Thegoat Keane was a phenomenal midfielder his leadership his tackling his passing his ability to read the game his drive to get on the ball and take the team foward was up there with the best
I followed Roy, throughout his career, Rough, tough, can pass the ball, made runs, scored vital goals, and showed real leadership on the pitch, and scolded own team mates when needed.
Keane is maturing into an excellent commentator. He is thoughtful and balanced, knowledgeable and discriminating. And now delivers in a quiet engaging way. Sign him up full-time Sky before someone else does.
Denis Irwin . Never ever spoken about. What a player. Week in week out . Never had a bad game for Utd or Republic , sensational .And indeed a Rebel 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪👌
