Dr. Livesey is the kind of man we all want to be. Jovial and friendly, he walks a glorious, confident, strut, with a cast of loyal friends by his side. Who knew that a Soviet cartoon from the late 80's would be so relatable in the modern age.

I love how instead of being some 4-eyes nerd like how most doctors are portrayed Livesey is a straight gigachad. He carries 4 flintlocks and can duel 3 guys at the same time. He’s a giant made of pure muscle. And he’s always happy.

*I think the reason why Dr. Livesey is such a gigachad in this version is because he is portrayed as how Jim views him, he is like one of the few good people that Jim meets in the book so Jim probably saw him as some hero of sorts. I remember the book starting with Jim narrating the story.*

What most people miss is that, during a siege, dr. Livesey has caught a bomb, with an _obviously_ live fuse on it, dead-eye stared at it for approximately 4 seconds while also laughing his a*s completely off, then threw it off (only for it to explode on impact), and said in a calm and cheerful manner: "they must be aiming at the flag".

In Soviet Treasure Island, the reason Jim Hawkins can do karate is because he exercises in the morning. I am not kidding. That is the only explanation ever provided. Stay healthy, lads.

I love the trope Dr Livesey and Medic from TF2: unhinged, suspiciously optimistic, and very unethical but are able to do their work better than their counterparts.

Livesey's larger than life persona is more than just his size. It's that voice actor that seals the deal. He comes off as extremely friendly, even as he refers to his would be patient as a "total waste of human life". The VA took his massive barrel chest into account, making his laughter loud and with a sort of contagious cheer. Without that voice actor's performance, Dr. Livesey might have come off as creepy or disturbing...and there is some of that there, but it's buried under his kind actions.

I just can't get over the fact how this doctor examines the wounds, describes the health issues while constantly laughing and saying "very nice, that's great, splendid" etc 🤣🤣🤣

I like the idea of a guy who just happens to be a muscular Doktor. Like, there are translations online, and Livesey is depicted as this charismatic fellow. He's literally what people describe gigachad as. Usually you expect the stereotypical nerd who can't fend for themselves or the stubborn brute who is in over their head. Nope. He's just perfect. It's like a Bruce Lee film. The best of brain and brawn.

Another thing that makes this guy stands out more is he isn't being a chad alone. He got friends that support and love him and he gives them back too.

What I love in Dr Livesey's character is how he keeps being unsettling while also just being a damn good, honest doctor. The laugh adds a ton of creepy but menacing vibe to his image and makes you feel like he could kill a man in cold blood at any moment, and yet he doesn't. Throughout the whole movie, he only defends himself, not making the first move, ever. That makes him the best chaotic good person I know.

I was actually bought up on this film as a child (being half russian) and seeing one of my favourite childhood characters blow up like this is a fascinating and hilarious feeling. As such I can fully attest to the fact he is a complete and absolute sigma male and the amount of positive attention he's received is completely and absolutely deserved

I love how we all suddenly praise this absolute chad of a character for a cartoon in 1983, but not just that, also because of the way he was walking with his fellow comrades.

On behalf of the Russian community, I can say that the fans of Treasure Island (1988) are absolutely glad that people not from the post-Soviet space have learned about this incredibly amazing work of Soviet art

I'm from Russia, and I have watched Treasure Island 1988 multiple times. It's a brilliant cartoon, also very humorous. I absolutely recommend everyone here to watch it, if you can find a version with subtitles.

Have a Russian friend, he had Doctor Livesey as his Discord profile picture for like, over a year at least by now. Saw the memes shortly before their big boom recently, and it was actually starting to amaze me how quickly it exploded in the English world.

As someone who’s watched the Soviet original countless times, it is hands down my favorite soviet animated film of all times. The wild characters (including Dr. Livsey) and the unique art style along with the humor has made it by far one of my most favorite pieces of media of all time

Holy shit, I used to watch this version of treasure Island as a kid, and seeing it be recognised by the western audience is nothing short of an honor.

The works of David Cherkassky deserve more recognition. Aside from the Treasure Island, there's also Adventures of Captain Wrongel and Alice in Wonderland (probably one of the few adaptations that doesn't mix it with Through the Looking Glass, which was adapted separately).

As someone who grew up watching soviet cartoons I can tell that the character of Livesey is the portrayal of the idea of "a healthy mind in a healthy body" that was propagated in most soviet cartoons and to explain why he laughs so much is to understand the concept wery popular in post-soviet countries that laugh extends ones lifespan. And Jim portrays the idea of healthy lifestyle as well. If you watch the cartoons - you'll unedrstand it better. But overall Livesey is exactly the type of a character you call larger than life. He's a doctor (means he knows how to be healthy, thus himself is healthy), he laughs, because he's optimistic and lughing extends your life and that makes it a full circle of: You're a doctor and you know what saves lives -> you save lives and you keep yours in top notch -> for that you laugh -> you become optimistic because you always laugh -> it improves your mental for being a better doctor -> that way you are stress-relieved and hepl relive stress of your patients. It's quite complicated to explain this to somebody who's not from the post-soviet space so I hope I was able to relate the idea in a way it would be somewhat comprehensible

I did a treasure island play a long time ago (it was a musical) and I was squire trelawney, I was given a choice between him and doctor livesey and I chose the squire because he had more lines and a bigger role. After seeing this now. I regret everything Edit: my friend who got the doctor’s role called me, said ‘L.I.M.C. New video sucker. And hung up. Not sure when I’ll recover from this…

Watched a lot of this cartoon back in my childhood on VHS, and while every other character there is charizmatic and memorable in their own way (here in Russia characters like cpt Smollett or even Black Dog were and are heavily memed for decades), Livesey was of course one of the most striking even before the Gigachad meta. The parallels between him and Gigachad are of course funny, but his perhaps most unique and striking trait was his always upbeat personality and the fact he kept laughing most of the time (and the great voice acting to help with that too). He was perhaps the most friendly and appealing from all (great in their own ways) characters. I didn't see much Chad Livesey memes in my corner of the internet, but I'll look forward to it! Happy to see the masterpiece gaining more traction and of course I encourage everyone to find a subbed version here on youtube and give it a go. You'll find a lot of quality content there :P

On the topic of Treasure Island, I highly recommend everyone to watch it. Not only is it, well, good, but also has some decent meme templates still unexplored by broader Internet.

I'm happy this film is getting the attention it deserves; I grew up with the English release and the character designs got me into drawing and learning a little about body structure.

Damn, I even considered pursuing animation because of that movie. Wrote an aplication essay about it to get into university in Kyiv, where the movie was made. Found out one of the lecturers there worked on the movie and liked my essay. Then dropped the uni for personal reasons, and started studying other field instead. Anyway, i'm so glad the movie is getting recognition it deserves.

As someone who grew up watching this cartoon it’s just fascinating to see the internet slowly bring it to the limelight.

The cartoon is a jewel of soviet animation. It's a fun,lovely experience, have this weird live action sections and quite good music. Reminds me of early seasons of SpongeBob. It's pretty great.

It makes me so happy to see a character from a cartoon I've watched in my childhood to become a respected Chad in meme culture

I always wanted Soviet cartoons to get more notoriety, so I'm very happy with this. Doesn't matter if Russian, Ukrainian, or Armenian, all countries of the Union made their own masterpieces which are either on par or even better than what Disney was making at the time. As the mere existence of the internet which made them accessible wasn't enough to make most foreigners give them a watch, I'm glad the memes are picking up the slack. Now someone talented in the craft should make something based on Magic Land, Russian adaptation of the wizard of Oz, as I want people to watch and read that. The stop motion series is great.

This is one of my favourite Soviet cartoons, also Soviet Winnie the Pooh adaptation is cool, I highly recommend you to check it out, it's very different from the Disney version.

As a Russian I'm very glad that English community got exposed to a masterpiece that is treasure island. It's still pretty popular around here and memes of it are doing really well, I suggest you watch the whole movie if you have time, definitely worth it
