Averaging 10 boards a game for a finesse wing is a ton even at 6'9, especially being that it was only his 3rd priority for his team behind points & assists. Karl Malone averaged that same figure as a 6'9 bruising power forward. Shawn Marion who also played the small forward position, was 6'7 but could jump out of the building, was the most dominating rebounding small forward of his era, who had the luxury to focus much more exclusively on rebounding than Bird, playing his whole prime on teams w/o a center, averaged 9 boards a game for his career. Scottie Pippen, who was a stat stuffing son-of-a-gun for the 90s w/ a 7'4 wingspan, scored moderately but wasn't a volume scorer, never made it to 10 boards a game for a season, and Bird did it for a career. I actually don't know of anyone else who wasn't either a power forward or center that averaged 10 boards a game for their career? And even the power forwards or centers that did, it was at least their 2nd priority.

Just compare compare that with the cup cake era where LeBron is playing. 6 finals losses in the cupcake era. He would have lost 2 more especially if Ray allen had missed that clutch shot. Just think. Arjun T LeBron>Larry. U guys wanna call this era the cupcake era than sure. But do you even know what Illegal Defense was? Illegal Defense was a rule during Birds and Jordans time that did not allow defenders to get off their man unless they were double teaming. This allowed Jordan and Bird to score better off of an iso which they were good at. Defenders these days can shrug of their man and babysit in the paint until LeBron comes so that they can stop him, and LeBron is still 50%+ from the paint. Also, the league back then was totaling at 300 more personal fouls than now which allowed players to get to the line.

Arjun T if you wanna talk about clutch than ur still clutch, saying flat out that LeBron is not clutch is just ignorant. Since LeBron came into the league nobody has made more game tying and go ahead shots in the final 24 seconds, his 44% on these shots. Jump shots floaters layups he can score from anywhere in the clutch. In 10 years from now the list for greatest SFs all time will be: 1. LeBron James 2. Kevin Durant/ Giannis (if you consider him to be a SF) 3. KD/ Giannis 4. Larry Bird I wanna hear your response (with at least so form of stats, as you just flat out say stuff)

Through those years Lebron won 3 championships and Larry won 2 (he won the other one at age 24) but go ahead and go look at the numbers through those years and tell me who you would take. Also take into consideration that through those years for LeBron, those were all of his years at Miami and his first two years back at Cleveland.

Not even entertaining in the sense that he'd have good jokes or something. Just a worn down record. As to Shannon... yeah, you knew his take in this case, and he's massively rooting for LBJ... But the difference is, most would probably agree with him and take LBJ over Larry, as well as consider LBJ to be the best player atm (contrary to Skip's stance of KD).

Bird did one thing that always makes me love rewatching him. He put himself on the line for the whole team in a way I don't think many do. I remember someone showing me this clip where he was injured, Celtics started losing, and he ran back out there. Another thing is, Larry stayed. Larry didn't flip flop. He stayed with Boston. And I like that about him.

Larry played in a stronger era, with fewer teams. Larry stayed loyal to one team, and didn't go looking for championships. Lebron did go looking for championships and won the same amount that Larry did. If I had to pick one of them for one winner takes all game, I'd choose Larry. Larry made his mark on the game with his ability to rise in the clutch. I can't say that about Lebron. Lebron played in a different NBA than Larry did. Expansion teams galore. I watch Lebron and see him not getting back on defense, I would choose Larry for his heart and hustle, and his knack in crunchtime. Great players both though. Last? I think the term "GOAT" is just used for arguing. Ir means nothing, no one can say who the GOAT is. No one will ever know who the GOAT is, actually.

Shannon lost all credibility when he said Bird couldn't defend... Bird is 30th in career defensive win shares in about 900 games. Lebron is 24th in win shares in about 1100 games.

Sam Theobald Defensive win shares are one of the worst stats because it groups you and the players on the floor. Steph Curry was top 10 in defensive win shares this year. But on ball defense and even off ball LeBron is easily better. Larry couldn't guard or lock down players the way LeBron did.

Sam T Charles Barkley once said I won't be the worst defensive player in the league as long as bird is here. He wasn't great on D. He got some accolades he didn't deserve off his name defensively but for the most part he was solid and that's it. Smart help defender, decent on ball defender if they didn't have crazy athleticism and he could get in your head but LeBron in his defensive prime was absolutely better

I’m a huge Lebron fan but with how much more athletic he is then bird I can’t argue how great Larry bird really is. He played in a era where you could play way more physical. It’s more amazing to me how Larry could beat you simply with amazing shooting and out playing other players. Imagine shooting almost 90% from the free throw line for your whole career. That is unreal to me all together. Most people don’t shoot 90% from the free line in a single game let alone for a 12 year long career.

Larry Bird had an extremely high IQ, Confidence, Heart and Clutch.... Without athletic ability he dominated no other player can claim this in an era that was physical.... if he played in this era under these rules his numbers would be scary... underrated player that he’s not talked about more often.... one of the very few who can talk the talk and walk the walk.... @Shawn Ritze Larry stated in his book that he knew his teammates and that he truly trusted them to look for that pass at any time. In fact Larry was the guy who like the media was trying to show how LeBron was thinking moves ahead in 2016 against the Warriors. Larry stated he would look for the best option in that split second and did that option... But he knew the opponent opposite him that defended him and knew how to exploit that into scoring opportunity for himself or his teammates. He even weighed the chances taking a 3 or making a pass inside and the odds of his teammate Making the basket and getting a foul on the play. He was a cerebral assassin.

Larry Bird was the baddest man to shoot the basketball. I grew up in the Bird Magic era and that saved basketball. Jordan took it global. Im from Ohio and love LeBron but Larry is still my favorite all time player.

Lebron is not better than Wilt, Jordan and Kareem. Wilt was even more athletic than LBJ - taller, stronger, better defender. LBJ 's defense is overrated. This video does a good job showing some of it. It is a close debate if Larry was better: I'll take Larry and so would Reggie Miller- Think of all the failures in the clutch Lebron has had (lost 5 Finals... Matthew Hysler Actually, you don’t know basketball. Compare their career stats, then remember that Bird spent four-years playing college ball, unlike James who came in right out of high school. Bird played 11 seasons, the last three seasons were spent playing with a broken back. He still put up All Star caliber numbers. He averaged 3 more rebounds per game than Lebron, which is astounding considering he played alongside Robert Parish and Kevin McHale virtually his whole career. Bird played in a more competitive conference during the league’s most competitive era, and in spite of having less physical tools and less time spent in the league, he has the same amount of rings as Lebron and their career stats are virtually the same. Bird swept Jordan in the playoffs...twice. This isn’t 2k. James is an all-time great. Pound for pound, Bird was better.

Takable Pond1339 not really. He's pretty much cemented where he is now. He's known as a superstar who needed super-teams to win all of his rings. He's great but he's not Larry Legend great. If Larry Bird played in today's game he would win multiple MVPs and Championships. He retired early and still has the same amount of 🏆 as LBJ. LBJ is known to jump ship to chase a ring. Bird is known as a Celtic for life. Total difference in both mentalities as well. Bird was known as a killer on the court and known to make the right play on the court. Bird finished with the same team and retired early due to health reasons and is still matches Bron in rings. Bird is the better SF to most NBA players. You could put Steph Curry above LBJ if you wanted to due to the fact that he's won all of his rings off of LBJ and he's the player that made Golden State a dynasty and changed the way Basketball is played. Forrest Mann the NBA is so much better now. LeBron would have loved the easy ds of the 80s and 90s. No zone defense and all he would have to deal with is man to man d from a bunch of wanna be tough guys. LeBron has his way with physical teams.

Not even a contest. Larry did all he did in 12-worth years, minus the injuries. Lebron is pampered to the n-th degree. Look also at who Larry had to face-Laimbeer and the Pistons; a rising Michael; Showtime; 76ers, etc. They played tackle back then. My game is on the line-Larry.

Its crazy how underrated Bird has become. If you ask the general fan of today they act like he was Kyle Korver or something. Peak Bird was Dirk with court vision. Unfortunately when his back gave out that robbed his career of 3-5 prime seasons imo. You can definitely make a case he's still the best SF of all time. With that being said i give LBJ the slight nod though

No, you can't make the case. Larry choked in the playoffs before. And in today's game, if LeBron EVER lost Finals MVP to someone else on his team, he would never hear the end of it. Also, last I checked, Kevin McHale was an absolute machine who was also largely responsible for the Celtics being great.

bird wasn't athletically as skilled as players today. The fact that he still did what he did with pure work and commitment is something of a marvel. And no one is a better three point shooter, and no one can guard larry, not even two people, and no one could flick a pass ball to another player like larry, and he is white ( think about that). And he trash talked better than rodman, and didn't even pass to jordan when he played with him, that is a confident man.

@@chrishansen8119 Bird is a better shooter from all spots on the floor as an average, but more importantly he has size to shoot over people in the clutch moments... Had Curry played back in the physical Bird era, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to make most of the clutch shots he's ever made - not without at least 5 more inches of height.

@@Julius_Paul Curry is a better shooter no matter what way you think about it. Curry is the only player in nba history that has to be guarded at the half court line. Steph is one of the only players who can pull from anywhere and know it's going in. Not to mention he's one of the best off all defenders in the league.

You are correct, no shame in it at all. My point is - Jordan and Bird wanted that ball for the last second shot. They were "CLUTCH", they knew it and they wanted to take that shot. If LBJ didn't defer so much on the last shot over his career, I'd like him more. With all that speed, athletic ability, and size, all of which he has in abundance, I don't see him deferring often because his best option is to take a smothered fadeaway. Jordan and Bird both made a living on fadeaways, btw.

Larry Bird was a BALLER. Most people on this page are under 40 and just don't know. It's actually a wash when it comes to who is better but if I value offense over defense it's Larry all day. Only guy I seen play who would drop a quiet 30 on a regular basis. Seemed like he had maybe 15.
