The Toymaker Is BACK In Doctor Who! This all-powerful enemy was last seen on-screen in 1966. Classic Doctor Who Introduced him, but he is finally returning! We’ve seen the character on-screen since the first trailer for Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary. However, we didn’t know if it was 100% him. We now have 100% confirmation that Neil Patrick Harris is playing The Toymaker and is waltzing in to cause chaos for David Tennant’s 14th Doctor!

I watched the Celestial Toymaker as a 10 year old, scared the life out of me. Michael Gough saying "make your move, Doctor. Make your last move". Only Gough could deliver that line in quite that chilling way. Still remember it 57 years later. NPH has a huge burden, living up to that. Gough was hugely underrated, playing, among scores of great performances, both the Toymaker and Alfred Pennyworth and making those polar opposite roles equally convincing and memorable. So memorable that a character he created 57 years ago is being revived for the 60th anniversary

@@tempestates13dates are fairly obvious 4th, 11th and 18th all Saturdays before the 60th anniversary followed by 25th Dec, if they want to go beyond the anniversary then 11th, 18th and 25th but that misses the whole point of a 60th anniversary as it goes beyond the 23rd November

Lovely video. *VERY* few villains cast as long a shadow on Doctor Who. And most of the others were introduced later - The Master, Omega, Davros, the Black Guardian and so forth. The Toymaker's return to Doctor Who is something I've waited for since I was a kid. And NEIL PATRICK-HARRIS playing him. It's a dream come true!!!

The Toymaker is Q meets Mister Mxyzptlk. He has the near limitless power of both. He has Q's genius. He has Mxyzptlk's obsessive focus on the one who's defeated him. Much like Mxyzptlk is bound to the ability to banish him by getting him to say his own name backwards, Toymaker is bound by the rules of games, he can't cheat and has to play fairly. He's also got the quirkiness of Mister Mxyzptlk but tempered with the gravitas and almost regal sense of knowing he's the most powerful being in the room of Q.

Very interesting summary of the extended story. I vividly recall watching the original story on TV, and being terrified that they would choose the "wrong" Tardis. One of the games involved choosing the real Tardis from a set of replicas, with the only clue being that their dimensional ratio's were slightly off! I always thought that the show missed an opportunity to reintroduce the Toymaker during Pertwee's run, and again during Mcoy's tenure. There may be more but these are the two that struck me at the time. Firstly the main villain in Carnival of Monsters, portrayed as a bumbling showman, could easily have been slightly reworked to be a manifestation of the Toymaker, with his malfunctioning machine holding the monsters being revealed as one of his collapsing Toyrooms. Secondly in the Circus in Greatest Show in the Galaxy the plot could easily have been tweaked to reveal a link between the God's of Ragnarok and the Toymaker, but these are both roads not taken so l look forward to this long overdue reappearance.

as per RTD's promo vids, Ten coming back as Fourteen had little to do by the Toymaker. perhaps it was more like Time Lord energy placing Ten back where he was needed to get Donna Noble back to help him face the Toymaker.

This is well done, and ordered. I've consumed as a consumer all those stories mentioned except the comic, but I didn't know the order from the Toymaker's perspective. I also don't remember the Magic Mousetrap, though I know I have it, I'll have to relisten. The story that I love most is Divided Loyalties. My asbsolute dream would be a flashback scene with someone playing a young Hartnell with Rallon and Millenia meeting him as Tennant narrates to Donna their first meeting.

Ok, my theory is that the Toymaker arrived when Jodie's regen happened, and put the ILLUSION that the Doctor is Tennant, aka 14. Donna is part of the illusion. When the Doctor defeats him, he wakes up as Ncuti, which explains Ncuti's "Somebody tell me what the hell is going on here". Just a theory.....😊

The Toymaker is the banished previous Whoniverse rulers over time leader. = This Celestial Toymaker should/could be the ascended Rassilon that wants to stear/push the classic Whoniverse mankind (now inside the new Whoniverse since end of episode Journeys end) in a certain direction (so we will become the new whoniverse rulers over time and as such protect his ascention at the end of the timewar in the classic WhHoniverse. (As events inside the new Whoniverse caused the end of the timewar inside the classic Whoniverse). In the classic Whoniverse the Toymaker came from Rassilons original people that ruled over time in the whoniveerse before the classic Whoniverse (the whoniverse where Jackie and Rose ended up in)

Why?@@tonyarc9455 Rassilon specificly told us his plan for the end of time. Ascention. And he is bansihed from the other TImelords. And as Gallifrey was taken into the void just as they ascended it stands to reason why the guardians over time resides within the void. AND we saw the white guardian (for the new Whoniverse) in End of time both parts (as the White Guardian ascended alongside with Rassilon = the White guardian was guarding its (and its child) ascentions (the child being the Black guardian over time (for the new WHoniverse) = the Timelords got split up into two opposing factions at the end of the timewar; because 1 group was fully ascended because they where closer to Rassilons "ascention device" (aka the Key to time for the new WHoniverse) as it split up the Timelords into two opposing factions as Gallifrey got not just frozen in that last moment, it also got burnt/ascended/terraformed. /this is what turned Gallifrey into Akhaten as it exted the void in end of Twice upon a time (and killed the TARDIS) as the "ascention wave" hit the TARDIS shortly after it exited the void with Gallifrey in tow; (this was the reason the TARDIS threw out JW (to save her and the Earth theTARDIS had exited nearby. (from the ascention wave) And as i mentioned there was an 2nd group of the Timelords. Those that got frozen mid ascention as Gallifrey got frozen in that moment thus trapping everyone outside the Gallifreyan high counsil in an Quantum locked Schrödingers cat like state of both being ascended and alive at the same time, Wink wink, do not blink... =Akhaten became Ghost monument world and Ghost monument world became Bysantium crash planet and Bysantium crash planet became Trenzalore. AND!. As the Doctor, the Pandorica and the TARDIS created the new Whoniverse... That means.. The Father, child and the Holy ghost monument...... And that means our now former Doctor will give birth to a female virgin birthed child (pos Jenny pos a another virgin birthed child) that will become the pilot mind for the Pandorica, and that means... The TARDIS corpse remains on Gallifrey/Trenzalore.... And that means the Master was intentionally tricked by Missy into ascending ( I loved being you; shining like a sun while the planet burnt) = the Master = the parasite god....= the former Master got the knowledge that must never be spoken = the Master got to know whom his parents was.....The bad wolf girl and the Man born out of war and chaos = the Master is what he hates the most = His 50% father had always been at his side and this is what turns the parasite god/Master into the regretful Missy, the new Black Guardian over time...

And as it was given the knowledge that must never be spoken the former Master got to know whom his parents really where. Rose Tyler, Donna Noble and Toni Tyler. Aka Bad wolf girl and the man born out of war and chaos. Aka "Romana" & Valeyard (after they had forgotten thier menories and been taken to Gallifrey.) including they forgot thier kid. and this is what really turned the Master into becoming evul. But as it/he realised (thru the knowledge given to him) that his 50% father had all thru out his lives been at his side he became the regretful Missy... And we know the Doctor have a certain will to become a toymaker... = Rassilon have it 2. And so does CAL/Claras Doctor...

You know, i am noticing similarities between the Toymaker and other entities in scifi. The Q from Star Trek, the Beyonders from Marvel, Mr. Mxyzptlk from DC Comics, exc. Interesting though, with a multiverse involved in many of them that the Toymaker has just been having fun in other universes. Different names and faces, but him non the less.

It is possible. There's another RU-vid video about Mr. Mxyzptlk (MM) that provides evidence that MM is the same person in every appearance, and may also be The Impossible Man at Marvel Comics. To me, MM and The Toymaker are very similar. Mr. Mxyzptlk has unlimited power to do anything he wants. His only limitations is the ones he places on himself, and he always lives up to his word.

None of those audio books and such are canon. No point even bringing them up. The 60th anniversary completely backs this up when the Doctor loses and is like "I won the first time." and the Toymaker was like "Best 2 outta 3!" So, clearly this is only their second meeting.

It is strange that he is underutilised considering he is immortal and he is a great nemesis like The Master. I like the casting of him in the 60s and the recent episode. I feel like someone like the Celestial Toymaker would have been a greater threat in the series. An immortal who plays games and can distort reality. You can virtually do anything with him

I have a theory that the Toymaker is a Timelord,as not only did they find his name in a Timelord database,but he has also changed his appearance each time he is seen,and so has his outfit,just like the Doctor,he also has a contained universe he presides in and controls,which indicates that it can be driven and controlled(like a TARDIS anybody?),and most of all like a TARDIS can be destroyed,yet this itself does not destroy its inhabitant(s),I think it’s too many coincidences to be coincidental at all.

The one issue I have after reading her essay is them saying that using the “N” word in there is a common American version of the children’s “Eenie meanie minney moe.” I am American and I was born in 1971 and have never heard that version until this discussion about it and a clip from the car guy using it. (Can’t think of his name or the show sorry) I have a vague memory or hearing that that was an old version but I would guess it wasn’t used in the US since maybe the 50’s except maybe in the south. I was raised in California which tends to be more progressive. Anyway I have also never heard of celestial being a racial slur either. I’m not saying these things don’t exist. I’m just saying I wouldn’t consider them common.

I was born in 1976 in Australia and I've heard Americans saying the n-word in the eenie-meanie rhyme, both in real life and on tv. Have you been deliberately trying to not notice the n-word your entire life or something? As to the word Celestial, it's a racial slur of Californian origin, your home state invented it! Back when the Chinese were coming to America before the Chinese Exclusion Act, they called their homeland "The Celestial Empire", and Californians quickly took to referring to all Asian people as "Celestials". Honestly, it was only in heavy use in California, and a bit in the UK. Fallen out of style now, but in the 1960s older people were still using it and there were still businesses that used the word in their names. "Common" is an interesting question here. Californians have probably made more progress than most American states, it's true, but racial slurs are still common today even in California. If you don't notice them I'd say that's more to do with you choosing to not notice it that them not being used.

@@Nick-pu3of I’m not saying racial slurs aren’t around. I’m just saying I have never heard that rendition of the playground game. I have heard the N word plenty just not in that context. I am in no way trying not to hear it. We always said tiger as a child and everyone I ever heard said tiger. As far as celestial is concerned it may have started in California but that doesn’t mean it was used. I grew up around all cultures I feel like I would have heard it. I had no idea that was a thing. I have asked family members and they didn’t either. It’s not common in the US that’s all I’m saying.

Toying with time and realities of the timelines of the origins of the doctors regeneration from the first doctor to the events of the day of the doctor in a nano timeline of every doctors life's. Toymaker echoes his powers through time and time again? There's been a shadow over the doctors past involvement, and his memories were changed by a single certain powerful figure from the outset of the return of the 9th doctor or 10th. There's been some mysterious forces at work leading the doctor to this moment, and the doctor hasn't released a thing about it, but sometimes there's something he notices in the corner of his eye, then it's disappears a split second? This is the Toymaker his managed to hold of the distortion of reality with ease for now and then? One question is, who is the real face between the realities of this Toymaker? 60’s era vs modern day era. People must remember that it’s a different time. The costume wouldn’t have been seen as ‘racist’ back then. People are way too apologetic for the past. By all means, update the costume. There’s nothing wrong with that and it’s perfectly clear who the character is without the old costume. Just don’t bang on at how it’s so racist.

I agree. Also the OG costume looks like a king from a deck of cards which fits the game theme pretty well. IDK if that was meant or not and I can see parts of Chinese traditional clothing in it. But I think they should of made it look more like a king from cards. But tbh I do like the new design and can live with it

Tardis Central should be aware that the source you used to side-step (but at least you mentioned it) the controversy about the original character has SPECIFICALLY ASKED NOT TO BE CITED because it's an 11 year-old article and the author doesn't want a bunch of people jumping down her throat about "woke mind virus" BS (my words not hers). But I'm glad the controversy was mentioned here. You don't have to let the problematic first version ruin it for you if you're the kind of fan who gets excited about old character returning, but it's amazing how many "explained"/"lore" videos are out there right now that just ignore it completely. Not to mention comment sections full of people who don't know anything about it and just want anyone who points any of it out to have their voice taken away ala the Doctor in the original story.

As other comments mention "Celestial" used to be a racist term to refer to Asians. When mixed with an eastern monk costume it's not a good look and can be considered "Yellow Face".

What really scary about the toy maker he is pretty much an eldrich like existance he is literal walking god the doctor has always stood as a larger then life figure like of demigods of ancient myth which he probabaly did himself but to the toy maker he is no diffrent then a mere mortal an insect compared to the toy maker if he really wanted to destroy the doctor yet no the toy maker is the one giving them the handy cap the deal the homecourt advantage with the doctor only evee being able to run away from him or barely escaping and imprisoning him knowing full well its not going to last
