Good overview of some great saws. I'm a Stihl guy for all the reasons you mentioned. That said, Echo, while slightly underpowered (from the factory) for its displacement is coming on strong in the USA.

I bought a Stihl MS 362 R (full wrap handle) 25" bar, non-MTronic a little less than 2 years ago for $825. It's an awesome saw. It handles the 25" bar with ease. I kind of wish that I had opted for the MS 462 R just for increased HP and bar length capacity, but am very satisfied with the 362 anyway. I would recommend dumping the Stihl HP Ultra 2-stroke oil (if you are using it) for something that burns better, generates less carbon build-up, and delivers better oil film strength for the bottom end. Currently, I'm using Bel-Ray MC-1 at 40:1, but will be switching to Amsoil Saber at 40:1 or 50:1, with an occasional tank of Echo Red Armor at 40:1 to help wash carbon off of the piston top, compression chamber, exhaust throat, and spark arrester screen.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I strongly considered an MS462 as well. It doesn't weigh much more than some of the 60cc saws, but has quite a bit more power (5.9HP vs. 4.6). However, since I rarely have the need to cut larger trees, I just couldn't justify the added cost. I guess I'll see how well a 60cc saw does for me, and I'll reconsider if necessary.

That Makita is a really nice saw. I run a Husqvarna 359 for a 60cc but recently bought the Makita EA6100 and EA7900. Super nice saws. Very quality build and while not as ergonomic as the new 5 series Husqvarna saws they are pro saw 100%. Great video.

Agreed, very nice saws. I believe Makita has already built their last gas chainsaw and is just selling leftover stock. So, once current stock is depleted, there will be no more new models on the market. And that is a shame.

@@outdoorsinoregon I think the saw community was hoping some corp would purchase the Makita gas power equipment rights from them and keep the legend alive. Sad days for us 2 stroke fans. I went through it with outboard engines. I prefer light saws as I am not getting any younger. The EA7900 is one workhorse but if there is more than a couple of hours of large wood to be cut I turn it over to my son. I also have a Husqvarna 545 Mark II and am very pleased with the performance as well as a Makita EA4300 converted over to run .325 chain. The 4300 is on of the very few 40cc class saws that is a pro build as in full magnesium cases. Really nice for quick tasks and handles more than you would think.

While I couldn’t find any faults with your descriptions, for milling, the outboard clutch is a big advantage not a disadvantage as it keeps the saw cooler and that’s a must when milling. However you are correct in that they have some reliability issues especially with there bottom end and seals. Personally of the 4, I think the long stroke design of the echo makes it the best milling saw. Not necessarily the best saw but the best milling. Weight also generally means better cooling and add in the ability to run it rich helps as well. Heat is what ruins a saw and milling means heat. The non mtronic Stihl would be a good choice as well and likely better built than the echo so I think you did fine. Don’t know enough about the 6100 to have anything to say other than their ea5000 and 7900 which I have are great although I wouldn’t pick either for milling. Good vid even if I disagree with what a milling saw should be. 👍🏼👍🏼
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
Good points. Yes, heat is certainly a top concern, and I stay mindful of that when milling. Another advantage of the external clutch may be in improved balance (at least Husqvarna claims so), but in everyday use I've found the internal clutches easier to live with. The 6100 is my first Makita saw purchase, and I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the saw; I'll have a video posted next week comparing the features of the Stihl and Makita. It's a shame Makita has stopped making gas saws, as I think they are a great option for the price (although I'm seeing prices increase rapidly for these saws, as they are no longer in production).
@dgoodman1484
@dgoodman1484 6 месяцев назад
I totally agree on the Makita! I bought three while they could still be had they impressed me that much! And I didn’t need any of them because I already had all the saws I needed. I also agree that outboard clutches suck in general but if I was building the perfect milling saw, it would be high on my list of wants. 👍🏼

It is a fuel purge bulb not a priming bulb. Husqvarna for the win.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
No, it's an air purge bulb. It purges air, not fuel. Also know as a priming bulb.
@kenturner3268
@kenturner3268 6 месяцев назад
@@outdoorsinoregon You are correct I meant air purge not fuel. I was wrong. But it is not a primer bulb as a primer would introduce fuel into the intake or cylinder.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
@@kenturner3268 Well, OK. Agreed; the bulb on this saw is pumping fuel from the tank, to the carb, and dumping back to the tank (not injecting into the intake). But google search for "Husqvarna purge bulb", and you'll get pages of listings labeling the part as a "priming bulb", so colloquially, the terms appear interchangeable, and probably are so to most people. 🙂

I've purchased 4 Stihl saws in the last 6 years, and they've all been very reliable. Besides replacing a plastic carb shroud under warranty, I've had zero failures in that time through frequent and sometimes hard use.

Stihls 25” bar is the exact same length as Husqvarna and others 24” and uses the same 84dl chain, its just marketing gimick calling it a 25”.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
The cutting length on a Husqvarna 24" bar is 23.6". The cutting length on the Stihl 25" bar is 24.8". If you measure, you will see they are not the same length.
@coreycorp7048
@coreycorp7048 6 месяцев назад
@@outdoorsinoregon Not sure where you are measuring from to come up with that? From the front of the case? Ifso all saws would measure alittle different.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
Yes, cutting length is measured from the case to tip of bar and manufacturers round up to the nearest inch. 23.6" --> 24". 24.8" --> 25", etc. The full bar length itself or chain DL count is inconsequential, as I need just over 24" of cutting length. So, a 25", 27", or 28" bar would work, but 24" is just slightly too short. @@coreycorp7048

I have done a lot of chainsaw milling. go big. 60cc for milling is not great it will work but wicked slow. i have milled with both 562xp and 372xp . bigger is better weight does not matter once you are in the cut. find a way to buy the biggest saw made by the maker you prefer.
@kenturner3268
@kenturner3268 6 месяцев назад
I agree. I purchased a Makita 7900 for milling and still feel like a 90cc class saw would be more suited for large slabs. I think a strong 60cc saw would be fine for slabbing 2x4 or 2x6 stock.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
I started slabbing with a big heavy saw and much prefer the lighter saws. The vast majority of my trees are smaller and don't require a longer bar, and I don't mind cutting at a slower pace. It helps to make more consistent cuts.

Yes, the Husqvarna is the strongest of the 4 saws, and the Mark II is lighter than all except the Stihl. This should be a very strong contender. Unfortunately, not much info was available for the Mark II when I made this video.

I’ll take the Echo..more Torque, less HP..dead nuts reliable. Spend the extra on a air filter o-ring kit, muffler mod it and run it. Have it ported and it embarrasses a 400. I service all of them.

I think you should have used the word 'made' dude with regards to the Makita. Seeing as they stopped making gas powered saws 2 years ago. Its a moot point😉

60cc saw for milling ? Alarm bells are ringing, none of these saws will last any length of time and i suppose you are going to use stihl ultra as well . Good luck . I hope cylinder and pistons are readily available especially for the makita
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
60cc saws and smaller are used for milling every day. I've been milling for about 10 years with smaller saws and not a single engine failure yet. All depends on type of wood, size of wood, how you mill, and how much milling is being done. These saws are plenty robust for my needs, and I'm choosing a saw for my needs, not yours. Since I didn't provide details of my usage nor the oil I'm using, you''re just making blatant assumptions and accusations which brings me to question your motivation.

Just fyi, the Stihl 25 inch bar is actually 24 inches.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
Measured from the case to the bar tip, the Stihl 25" bar is 24.8". Bar length is determined by cutting length rounded up to nearest inch. The Husqvarna/Makita 24" bar has 23.6" cutting length. End-to-end length between the 2 bars may be same or similar, but that doesn't determine the cutting length.
@eurokid83
@eurokid83 6 месяцев назад
@@outdoorsinoregon husky 24” bar is going to be different than Stihl 25” bar due to the tail mount. If you take a 24” Oregon D025 (Stihl mount) bar and lay it on top of a Stihl 25” bar they’re exactly the same length. I work at a saw shop and have done this many times to show customers.
@outdoorsinoregon
@outdoorsinoregon 6 месяцев назад
@@eurokid83 No arguments there. Oregon does indeed call their replacement for the Stihl 25" bar a 24" bar. My point is that based on the cutting length (I measured a hair over 24.75") and industry standard for bar length labeling, Stihl is right to market it as a 25" bar.
@eurokid83
@eurokid83 5 месяцев назад
@@outdoorsinoregon not sure how your measuring the bar length? Just checked a new 362 on my showroom floor, measured exactly 24” from case of powerhead to tip of bar. The way Stihl measures their bars is from forward most edge of bar stud slot to tip of bar. That comes out to just shy of 24.5 inches. Yes it’s longer than 24 inches but I wouldn’t call it 25 inches, especially when mounted on the powerhead.
