@@ultimateskillchain- There are also the circumstances of finding the lost item to consider and the possibility of fraud. And whether they even admit to finding it. Fraud is a criminal offense. I've no doubt that people have honestly believed an insured item was lost or stolen because they couldn't find it. "Sally intended to take it on the trip." But Sally changed her mind and didn't put the item away properly for whatever reason. "I know I had it before the burglary," and it had fallen into a small space. Do they admit to finding it? Or do they figure it's not worth the hassle of paperwork? In the case of fraud, they're definitely not admitting they still have it.

Would someone just ask a jewelry appraiser, or anyone who owns fine jewelry if there is a possibility that this was worn any other time except a huge gala instead of asking AI to look for someone wearing this? OMG it's kind of common sense to know this is treasure, not casually worn, especially during the Edwardian Era. The rich would have been wearing great jewelry, but nothing like this.

😂 actually yes they totally would have because the past is always weirder than we think it is. England at this time had just come out of a huge thing called The Bone Wars. And everybody with money was obsessed with collecting fossils. Look up the real history behind Mary Anning and the rhyme she sells seashells by the seashore. It gets into the whole bone Wars and everything that was going on. So yeah actually turn of the century people would have been totally into this into this kind of thing. @@angelwhispers2060 I tend to doubt that it was being worn, given how they are laid out it seems more likely that they were in a display case or jewelry box that has disintegrated than on a person. Two points on submarine photography: 1- Definitely a wide angle lens, the only light is from the spotlights you take with you, and it doesn't travel very far under water, so you have to get very close to get a usable image. 2- The lens is full of air. This may sound an odd thing to say, but the light refracts when it moves from traveling through water to traveling through air even if there is no lens. This means the effective focal length changes when the camera is under water. Thus ends the sum total of my knowledge of underwater photography.
@shable1436
@shable1436 5 месяцев назад
Also there's a lens corrector that fixes that problem, not all cameras are the same in deep submersibles, they account for the concave lenses and air by using focal converter convex lenes

Fun fact about these ancient tooth necklaces: Back in the late 90's- early 00's, my husband wanted a (fossilized) shark tooth necklace for his birthday. (It was a surfer thing). Anyway I found a seller called "The Shark Tooth Hunter" who lived in Galvaston, TX. He told me that millions of years ago, that area of TX had been a great inland sea. He made a living by walking around, finding both mineralized shark and Megalodon teeth, making jewelry out of them. He had some that were the size of a 30 lb paperweight, plus many smaller ones. I bought a couple of the Megalodon necklaces at very reasonable prices + one fossilized shark tooth. They came with certificates of authenticity.I paid about $30 each for them- which seemed pretty reasonable. Which makes me wonder: If these were a prestige item, worn by a passenger on the Titanic- were they sourced from Texas...or elsewhere like Europe?🤔

Now that you mention it, we have had necklaces made with shark teeth and beads very similar to the ones shown in the image, and I live in Central America. The only thing I don’t think you would find is the boar tusk (it was boar, right?). I’ve never seen jewelry like that in my region, but I have owned necklaces and bracelets made with mother of pearl beads, shark teeth and shells. I even used then long time ago, for a costume party when I dressed as a pacific island inhabitant.

I’m thinking it’s also possible that the tooth, beads, and boar tusk were souvenirs brought back from the South Pacific to which the gold was added later. It doesn’t necessarily stand to reason that husbands were the only suppliers of such things. They could have been gifts from a child, a sibling, a parent, or even an aunt or uncle who had travelled there. If a woman owned them, old family or societal photos would be the best place to look.

With the museum connection, the jewelry could've been a "sample" piece for high fashion to build hype or as a way to profit off of the exhibit. Like zoo gift shops where they're selling jewelry made of horns and antlers but with a way higher price tag.

I think something important that we have to keep in mind when trying to identify the owner of these objects is where their cabin was located. The jewelry is in the debris field, not inside the wreck, so it had to have gotten there somehow. The most likely explanation is that they were kept in their owner's cabin and subsequently fell off the ship when she broke in half. Here's the cabins of the 1st Class passengers mentioned in the video as possible owners: John Jacob Astor - Cabins C-72 / C-74 - Amidships - Destroyed During the Breakup George Widener - Cabin C-80 - Amidships - Destroyed During the Breakup Archibald Butt - Cabin B-38 - Forward - Still Intact in the Bow Section Francis Millet - Cabin B-32 - Forward - Still Intact in the Bow Section John Weir - Cabin E-59 - Amidships - Destroyed During the Breakup Ervin Lewy - Cabin Number and Location Unknown Engelhart Østby - Cabin - B-30 - Forward - Still Intact in the Bow Section Arthur Gordon McCrae - Cabin Number Unknown, Somewhere Aft - Destroyed During Sinking

I wasn't quite old enough to ride the titanic movie/leonardo jack wave but one event that feels like an increasingly unique experience the older I get is having a "titanic day" in elementary school. I'm pretty sure it was third grade when you would research a passenger on the titanic, and then pretend to be that person for a day like you were on the titanic. we dressed up, had a fancy sit down meal, and it conveniently overlapped with us learning ballroom dancing in gym so we had to dance with a boy at one point lol and even though just the third graders were the ones mainly participating, the whole school got decorated for it, like they painted the windows in the common areas so they had a porthole, and the principal was the captain of the ship. I have no idea why this was a thing, when it started, or if it is still going on, but its definitely something I can only reminisce about with my elementary school classmates and no one else.

Private school? I like the creativity and commitment to detail. We had Tom Sawyer Day in 5th Grade, which, I don’t know, personally seems a lot more wholesome than Titanic Day, but that is at least fitting excuse for dancing and etiquette lessons. Those obviously didn’t go with Tom Sawyer Day, which was when we dressed in quaint costumes, went to a nearby park for a picnic, had potato sack races and that kind of stuff, a special Show-and-Tell competition where the winner was the kid who brought a live frog. I thought that was actually very lazy and uninspired, especially compared to my homemade blush made of mushed up rose petals in a baby food jar! For his Tom Sawyer Day my younger brother actually dressed as Becky Thatcher in one of my old Kirsten Larson American Girl-inspired dresses and was quite the center of attention. But we did have ballroom dancing and etiquette classes Monday evenings at the Junior League for the entire first Semester of 7th grade. Not associated with school, technically, but pretty much everyone did it because it was just what was tradition. Naturally everyone loathed it, but some of what we learned did turn out to be useful later, even the dancing. And we had to dress up in nice clothes, just for the lessons. It was so awkward, since it was that terrible age, and fraught with emotion over who danced with who, even though they usually just did a rotating system and didn’t rely on making the boys ask the girls. That was cruel enough for our school dances, which started that year. All this fancy rigmarole was in the 90s, by the way!
@FlyToTheRain
@FlyToTheRain 10 месяцев назад
@@MegCazalet lol yeah catholic school, and with ours being third grade the etiquette was basically only for the sit down dinner and not judged too harshly, pretty much just the teachers reminding you how to hold your silverware. dancing was also just a basic boxstep, and they paired us up by having girls in one line and boys in the other, and you just walked out one at a time and whoever walked out on your turn was your partner. i remember the tallest boy and shortest girl got paired up and we all though that was hilarious haha

There's various resources to search historical records of people who were coming to and going from Australia by ship. They aren't complete and some of them are held nationally and some state by state...but if anyone was seriously trying to work out the possible previous Pacific travels of Australians who ended up on the Titanic that might be a longshot possibility to get started on it

I have absolutely no experience in fashion history and even I was like, “Why do I feel like that AI thing isn’t going to work? That totally looks like a necklace you’d put in your luggage and not on your body.” I just simply cannot understand the reasoning behind their decision. Even today, as a not rich person at all, I pack all of the jewelry I take on a trip, because flying sucks and I want to be in my jammies when I do it. They could scan me for days and never know I’m carrying a wealth of Star Wars and Halloween jewelry with me in the middle of July, because those two things are my vibe all year round.

Great video, yeah, the moment you said they were gonna analyze boarding footage I was like: good luck, not gonna be worn for that. And I know almost nothing about fashion history. Either Magellen is just doing a publicity stunt or they don’t bother hiring experts in this field, which is a shame A few questions/ideas: Would this kind of thing possibly be worn for dinner or dances onboard or is it too fancy even for that? I didn’t quite follow why you decided it could only have been brought as a permanent relocation. Could you expand on that? Megalodon babies were born, fully bitey, at around 6.5 feet long. So, while the exhibit at the museum was obviously correctly choosing larger teeth for their huge jaw display, I expect subadult megalodons might shed teeth in this ‘white shark’ size range as they had a lot of size overlap with white sharks. Maybe a paleontologist can clarify if this is correct. Were there any people onboard who were South Pacific natives? As crew or entertainers or ‘exotic servants’ who might own such pieces as part of their native dress? Are there resources for the exact insurance claims for passengers? Seems like it would be interesting to match these against scan footage in general. Were there fancy dress parties planned that might make this a collection to do with a costume rather than exciting statement pieces… Though I’d love to see the kinds of non-costume outfits daring people would have made utilizing these items!

@diogobarbosa1406
@diogobarbosa1406 11 месяцев назад
As to dancing none was really done on this voyage, since there wasn't even an official dance floor. As to a costume party event that is rather unlikely since passengers packed in advanced to the voyage and such events were only organized among the passengers being something unofficial. As to it being too fancy to wear on board, there are a few possibilities. It is unlikely that passengers would wear statements pieces every evening, since the nature of such voyages was quite casual, (and you don't want to look overdressed lol). However since the last night was a sunday dinner, the event could have been more formal. We can also consider the group dinners thrown in the A La Carte restaurant (not the main dining saloon) which was described as the dining experience for the super wealthy, since its price was not included in the voyage ticket and therefore would have had a very special and formal nature to it. But as with everything with Titanic this is a huge rabbit hole!

I feel like one of the most obvious places to start in terms of research for Magellan is where they found the necklace on the ship. If it were in the remains of a stateroom, then we could map out roughly which room that might have been and crosscheck that with manifests to see who was staying in that location during the trip. The AI method seems like a complete waste of time. I loved this video so much, it’s such a weirdly fascinating topic.

The interesting thing is that wild boar, according to Wikipedia, originated in the Philippines/Indonesia and then spread to the Pacific, Asia, Europe and North Africa. In all these regions there are boar tusk adornments in collections that date back to Ancient and even fully prehistoric times. However the most likely source of the gold-set tusk from the Titanic is not the antiquities market, but the international exotic goods market of the nineteenth century, which as Abby rightly says, places the origin in the Vanuatu region --- which was producing tusks at the time in mercantile quantities to meet demand in the region. It doesn't follow however that the owner of the Titanic tusk had to have connections in or have visited the Vanuatu region. Rudyard Kipling, a Titanic contemporary, specifically talks about the origin of tribal artefacts in his Just So Stories, describing how a narwhal tusk carved by Inuit (I think that's what it was) might end up in a shop in London. The point he makes is that anyone travelling by ship, a sailor for example, might purchase a boar tusk or two directly from the maker at a market stall in Vanuatu, and then onsell them to a shop in a major western city. Ivory, in the form of elephant tusks, coral, animal horns and antler and whale bone had been popular in Europe for many centuries. And Monarchs wanted their ivory items bejewelled, so I gather that western jewellers have a long history of setting bone items in metal.. And being set in metal, their last owner can't have been someone interested in collecting "authentic" tribal artefacts from Melanesia. I think that the Titanic owner of the tusk and tooth most likely bought them from a western jeweller in a major city. Such as a stopover port like Singapore or Colombo, where wealthy tourists doing a tour of The Far East might buy locally-made gold or silver jeweller with an exotic twist. The tusk and tooth would have been fascinating and conversation-starting mementos of that part of the trip.

My first thought when I saw the picture was "does anyone else see the duck?😂" My second thought is could the collection have been a display for a library or gentleman's club room and belonged to the company that owned the Titanic. This dive down the rabbit hole was super interesting, actually! One thing I don't get. They have all this data from the ship. Why don't they use the existing data, to figure out where the necklace is in relation to the wreck? It's still there, so I think it's fair to say it wasn't worn when the ship went down. By comparing the data they have against the blue prints of the ship, they could find more or less the exact location of the necklace. Is it in a suite? In a cabin? In the captain's quarters? Next task would be to compare the travel manifest. Who stayed and where. If the necklace was for some reason moved from the cabin (to let's say for safekeeping with the captain) shouldn't it say somewhere in the travel manifest? If it is located in what used to be a travel suite, we could find out the person staying in that suite. This wouldn't be easy. But it would be easier than finding someone, who would not carry the bags containing the necklace themselves, mind I add, who was wearing the necklace through AI 111 years later.

a great deal of the moveable items within the Titanic did not stay inside the hull as the ship sank. As the 2 parts of the hull descended the 3 miles to the ocean floor, the broken sides of the hull left a "debris trail" of small items that slowly cascaded and poured out of the hull in an arc. The "debris field" is quite long and extends well away from the final resting places of the remnants of the hull. The field aligns with the strong prevailing ocean current that exists at this part of the ocean floor, and it is believed that the current may also have swept smaller items out and away from the hull.
@miippi
@miippi 11 месяцев назад
@@a24-45 yes, this is quite understandable. But we can track ocean currents. There is existing code to do exactly that. Obviously, if it's in the sediment outside from the hull of the ship, we couldn't get an exact location, but we could use what we have already to determine a likely point of origin for the necklace. Like these people thought of going through people getting into the ship to try and find the necklace with AI. But they didn't think to use the methods we have available and the science behind them first?
@a24-45
@a24-45 11 месяцев назад
@@miippi It wouldn't surprise me that calculations can be made to estimate which part of the ship an item was originally located. The problem isn't a lack of maths, its shortage of real world data. So many assumptions would have to be made about exactly how and in what order the many rooms and levels of the ship would have lost their contents during the descent. And as for collecting more onsite data now....one half of the hull has already disintegrated, and the other half will apparently be obliterated within the next thirty years.

Even without social etiquette people who could have a megalodon necklace would have multiple necklaces to choose from they are not going to be wearing the same necklace all the time to every event, outing, or wherever. they will switch it to match their dress, hair, the statement they want to make. Most average people even will wear different pieces of jewelry. It also could have just been in transit to its new owner as well. Their logic makes no sense no matter how you look at it.
