Amazon promises low prices and free shipping, but who is really paying the price for these deals that seem too good to be true?

I try to buy locally as much as possible. However, much of what I buy from Amazon isn't available locally. It is also a waste of time and money to drive all over the place looking for what I want. I do try to ask myself if what I am ordering is something I really need or just think I want.

My local business group in AZ only asks that people add 10% of local stuff to what you already buy. Not asking for 100%. Just do what you can. Thanks for caring.

Buy local! We support our local independently owned grocers, restaurants, hardware store, pet supply store, coffee shop, movie theater/playhouse, and farmer's markets. My household rarely buys non-essential basic goods; but, when we want to buy a household or personal accessory item, I try to seek out a local artisan, usually at a farmer's market. For example, over the past decade, I've only purchased jewelry items from local artists. My wood cutting board and fermentation crock were made by local artisans as well.

I live in the western suburbs of Chicago and one local business I like to support is the Planter’s Palette Garden Center, in Winfield. They have a beautiful selection of plants and great gardening supplies. The staff are friendly and really know a lot about the business’ garden offerings. I also like to support I Have a Bean cafe, in Wheaton. They make a point to offer jobs to workers who have previously been incarcerated and desperately need economic opportunities to get back into society.

Sadly, buying local isn't always an option. Wal-Mart has ran a lot of the mom and pop stores out of business.

There are no Walmarts in Germany. Why? Germany has a law that requires employers to pay employees according to their profits. Based on its profits, Germany determined that Walmart should be paying its employees 27 EURO an hour, so Walmart left. Lucky Germans! Their vibrant main streets full of small shops (instead of the incredibly boring chain stores) are wonderful places to shop as well as window shop.

Grow/make what you can, sell what you make, buy what you don't. There are local organizations that hook consumers up with local businesses in your area. Or form a co-op with other people in your neighborhood so you have buying power as a group. Sure, it depends on where you live but there are options. Just takes a little homework. also, VOTE!

1. Buy less stuff - think - do I really need it, what is it costing the planet. Think how you can become part of the restorer species not the consumer species. For gifts - donate to Treesisters, Wildlife orgs etc and gift back to nature. 2. Support the real Amazon - the life supporting rainforest that is being deforested at an alarming rate right now.

It true. I used to work at Amazon and they treat their workers like shit. I was there for a year, and I have litteraly seen hundreds of people getting hired and fired after just working there for 2 or 3 months. Use eBay instead...

I sell music for a living and Amazon forbids me and any other new music sellers to sell on their platform. If I somehow manage to offer a lower price than they do let's say on Ebay which I do sometimes, their computer algorithms will find it and lower theirs so I no longer have the low price . They work with a company that has a monopoly on music sales in the USA. Old sellers who had music 10 years ago are still permitted to sell on there but nobody else can.. These guys give great prices on music by squeezing the record labels. A record label only makes about $1.00 - 1.50 on a new cd sold by Amazon. Pretty hard to fairly compensate bands that way huh? When we allowed Amazon's supplier to handle our products they listed them at 50 cents to one dollar over wholesale then hit us with micro fees they subtracted from our payouts. They did nothing but devalue our product and take away retail sales from our own site.

It's hard, but try to buy only what you need (and second hand if you can find it). It seems like there are a lot of local businesses here in Germany, we try and support shopping at these stores (with the help of our translate phone app) and look for quality items that will last. Great video, I didn't know just how much cardboard was being generated by us all, often for things we don't even really need.

The reason why we don't support the small businesses is convenience. That's not going to change. We need to come up with a better solution. Competition comes to mind. Not with brick and mortar or small businesses but another Amazon type company all online that has everything we want to buy and will ship it to us but operating in a more ethical way. Ebay, doesn't have everything we want like Amazon, but I suppose its a distant second and the best we have for now.

what about putting up with a little inconvenience in order to save the planet and support workers rights? Unless you are poor yourself (cos you work for a company like Amazon), why not pay a little more and buy from your nearest family owned store - that keeps them in a decent, satisfying, jobs as well. (and helps to keep their prices down). Amazon and big supermarkets are putting small business' out of work. Buy local.
@michaelhevron1392

but who can compete with amazon? only another giant company with deep pockets. to behave ethically costs money which raises prices. yes, it is less convenient to shop local, but it i the right thing to do. at least try this: look locally for what you need--freecycle and craigslist first, then local shops (even if that search is online or via phone). whatever you can't find, if you still think you need it after your search, then look at ebay and then amazon. they fill a need (and a want) but they shouldn't be the first go-to.
@charlottebee9840

I'm thinking we could support local businesses AND have the convenience of online shopping. How about an Amazon-like site where, once you're ready to check out, it finds the stuff you want locally? Now you still have to go out and pick it up (or have it delivered from the local biz), but you didn't have to go from one store to the next to see what they have. Obviously, this won't help if an item just isn't available locally, but we could at least be using local businesses when we can, and then once they have you in their store, you might pick up a few other things ...

It still doesn't make sense. Even Wish doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense that the things you can get delivered to you are so inexpensive compared to a physical store especially when they're coming from overseas. Those products still are manufactured so someone is making a profit of those items yet on Amazon they're still inexpensive.

Instead of using Amazon, we use Taobao and JingDong in HongKong and China. I used to enjoy buying things at Taobao. When I released I have spent so much time shopped around the apps, buying a lot things I don't actually need and seeing so many bubble bags and carton boxes for packing; I uninstalled the apps last year and keep my life simple by buying less.

Amazon must also be paying for urban free shipping because they overcharge on the shipping to "remote" addresses. They were going to charge me over $200 for shipping on items weighing about 10lbs. in total. I had them ship it to a friend for free and she sent it to me for $65 without changing a thing. I suspect that they are not redirecting the overcharge to the third party business who paid for the shipping in the first place, as you stated. Amazon is taking advantage of remote dwellers to boost their profits. Since then, I have quit buying from Amazon although I do use the marketplace and pay much more reasonable shipping directly from the third parties. There are also other businesses who will ship to remote communities for free or for reasonable amounts. It is just a matter of doing some research.

But where is the great uncovering of a deeper story? Don't listen to the sad outsiders who don't really know what they are talking about. Ask him to verify the "Amazon makes their employees pee in a bottle" story, if that's all he' got then the big uncover would be, is what is he really upset at Amazon about, My guess is that he is not a part of one of America's great success stories. There are mom & pops, cousins, uncles who now have a platform for being in business in the Amazon arena without the cost of a brick and mortar store. A big part of the model depends on a large group who now can live the american dream due to their access to amazons market place.

One of the main things I regularly order online is health supplements but I never order heat-sensitive items anymore after learning that amazon warehouse temps can reach 90 degrees and,since amazon bought out Whole Foods, I seldom shop there anymore as I can't tell if they've stocked the shelves with unsold items coming from their hot warehouses or not. Also, someone mentioned ebay but I recently ordered a health supplement from there and it was drop-shipped from amazon, even though I bought it on ebay so now I ask before buying. I still get frozen and fresh organic items there, just because I can't find organic locally.
@Nana55555
@Nana55555 5 лет назад
When you order in EBay and it's shipped from Amazon that is because the eBay seller also sells on Amazon and they have stock kept in the warehouse there. So they will ship it from there so they dont have to pay the shipping.
@unbenevable
@unbenevable 5 лет назад
Yes, of course, I understand that is what is happening. I know why they do it; I just feel it should be disclosed. I want to make an informed choice. I will send it back if it drop-ships from amazon when it's an ebay seller.
@unbenevable
@unbenevable 5 лет назад
All supplements are not created equal. Poorly manufactured, extracted, processed or stored products will not work, that is true. In personal experience over the course of my own life, my own body has proven to me that good supplements certainly do work. Heat-sensitive supplements may be rendered useless by being in high temperatures for any length of time.

in Sweden we got unions and almost everybody are members of a union. It's a human right to be a member of a union and that can't be a reason for getting sacked. (Swedish law). We got laws that says we can't work more than 8 hrs. a day (with some exceptions) and that everyone has the right to have at leat a 5 min break every hour AND a decent lunch break. But with Donald Trump as president the possibility of implementing such laws or even organize decent unions are very low. They will clash down on you.

Wrong on so many levels. A Items on Amazon are not all FBA, Amazon sells and fulfills many products. B. Flex only handles the "last mile" not products making it to the fulfillment center. C Amazon pays more in shipping costs than any other company in the world. Your product shipping to your door is not covered by the original shipper. When they shipped the item to the FC they send a bulk delivery and thousands of units, and pay a fraction of the cost compared to sending out 1000s of orders. D Flex is not different from Uber or lyft, don't want to do that job, don't do it.

I live in a small suburban town in Arizonan that has a very limited number of stores. If I need something that I can't get here I would have to drive about 40-45 minutes. And that would be for just a couple of items. So Amazon is really much more convenient. I do buy locally when I can. We have a good hardware store, a grocery store and some other small businesses close by and a pet supply store not too far. I use them for grooming my dog but the problem is that one item I get from the pet supply store is $10.00 cheaper from Amazon. So I will, of course, save that money by buying from Amazon.

I agree with the overall point of the video, but online shopping is better in terms of emissions because a) the items are stored in warehouses, where space is more efficiently used and there’s less heating and cooling than stores where customers are expecting comfortable temperatures b) the delivery drivers (as opposed to Flex workers) are driving much more fuel-efficient vehicles than what customers driving to stores are using (because it saves UPS, USPS money on gas) and c) the delivery drivers’ routes are more efficient as well, delivering many things in one trip. So even though I agree with buying locally/small business, saving people making individual trips to and from whatever store is a good thing for the planet. Of course, Bezos has the monopoly power to make his business much greener, more humane, etc if he wants to...
@MM-nh8ez
@MM-nh8ez 5 лет назад
In fact, another good campaign might be to ask Amazon to “green” up their delivery packaging.
@unbenevable
@unbenevable 5 лет назад
About your points on emissions reduction... hmmm. Buying local kinda means right where you live and shopping can be consolidated so that there aren't all those trips back and forth. If every person consolidated their shopping, I wonder how the emissions would compare to that many less trucks on the road? The electric power that it takes to have all these computers running 24/7 might be factored in. For me, nuclear waste is as dangerous as carbon emissions. Electric power is provided by nuclear power. I guess, I'm just saying it's a pretty complex issue with a lot of things to consider. I agree with some of your points but as for warehouses, if they are temp-controlled to keep nutritional items and heat-sensitive products viable, that's all well and good. amazon allows temps up to 90 degrees. Also, employees have to work 10-12 hours in that heat.
@MM-nh8ez
@MM-nh8ez 5 лет назад
Are you talking about locally made? That’s most likely lower emissions, although it depends on where the original materials come from. It’s not necessarily practical for most people for some of the necessary items of life (toilet paper for example). Solar and wind are cheaper than oil and coal right now (as well as nuclear), so there’s NO reason we shouldn’t be switching over rapidly. Like I said, I do agree that Amazon is not great, that workers are not treated fairly. It’s just the idea that driving to the local stores to get most of the things people buy on Amazon is better as far as emissions - the research I’ve read says it’s not. You have to remember, too, that the delivery trucks are usually out when there’s less traffic, so there’s less wasted gas as well. I get cleaning products from a company called Grove Collaberative (not sure if I can post the website). I can get several months worth of items in one delivery. I just don’t want people to think that driving to even an ethical store is automatically better for the planet than shopping online. We should be treating driving much differently than we do now.

Thanks for this informative and disturbing video. Companies don't become a trillion dollar turnover company by being nice. I've boycotted this company for 6 or 7 years because of the effects on local bookstores and the fact that free delivery did on a £1 or £2 book did not stack up and that their model relies on pushing other companies out of business with high volume. The anti union, medicare and pension is eye opening but not surprising. Having heard of the conditions of a local amazon warehouse including long hours and searches they are remain on the boycott list for life. More people need to support local and think about needs rather than wants. 100 tonnes of cardboard per day is horrific. Thanks for this.

The only reason why I order online is because what I want, usually can't be bought in my local stores. We don't have a local video store, music store, or toy store anymore. The books I buy from the book store all have to be ordered for me, because the store only stocks the most popular titles. The clothes stores only carry up to an ever-shrinking size XL. I don't order through Amazon, though, because of the times I've been cheated on orders or they don't ship to Sweden. I normally go to the stores directly and look there.

There's no such thing as a free lunch. I'd like to see Story of Stuff make a video on the "freebie" drivers enjoy when they park at shopping malls, big box stores, strip malls, restaurants, cinemas, etc. Yes, I'm talking about the "free" parking, the hidden cost that all of us pay for as part of our purchases whether or not we park in their "free" parking lots. Someone has to pay property taxes and insurance for parking lots, and for asphalt maintenance, snow clearing, road salt, signage and painted parking lines, and it is the customer who pays.

Yes, better public transportation would definitely help. I live in Ottawa where public transit is pretty dismal. I can usually get from A to B by bike in half the time it takes to go by bus. Walking is often faster too. For example, I can walk to the VIA station in 35-40 minutes but it takes one hour and 10 minutes by THREE buses! One missed transfer can add another half hour to the journey. I sometimes buy online (for bulky items that are a nuisance to take on crowded buses) from a local store such as Canadian Tire. The postage is a dollar or two more than the bus fare, and it saves me at least two hours of bus travel time.

I always try to either buy local or order direct from the company that makes the products I want. I try never to buy anything on Amazon or to support Jeff Bezos.

I don't buy too much stuff but usually I buy electronics and I can guarantee you that Amazon is NOT even the cheapest anymore. Instead of assuming that Amazon is the cheapest, use google shopping and you will discover that many sellers now offer the same deal as Amazon, including free shipping. For electronics, use B&H from NYC, created in 1976, they match any Amazon price including shipping and you can talk to a real person, an expert in the product you bought. I do NOT work for BH. Use Neweggs.com, much better price than Amazon. Bezos is disgusting and screwing us!

I would share this IF 1.) it stayed away from demonizing Beni’s without any attribution backing it up; some people like what he’s done with Washington Post, for example. 2.) video provided more attribution of worker mistreatments- there’s a little tiny headline about workers in UK with no other info. How does that translate? 3.) presentation of information was less juvenile with cheers, cartoons, & a snarky kid telling me what to do. What are the presenters credentials? Perhaps someone credentialed like a pollution expert, scientist, researcher with some gravitas & attributed facts. Also agree SoS needs to address feedback which is common about convenience, lack of supply in many areas, etc. I’m with the sentiment but won’t share this representation of what is a serious issue with a video like this. Thanks.

He talks too fast. I know he is imparting a good message but this video has the image clips fly past too quickly and he is shown talking too much. It would be more effective if we see the speaker's image less while his voice explains the sections about the worker conditions and garbage resulting from all the packaging . This is really important especially as cities like mine have bought into the employment opportunities when Amazon sets up a facility in my region. These are not the kind of jobs we need if workers end up with mental and other health problems.

Please- come up with a better solution before you start bashing. It’s called capitalism, no one said you have to like it

Let’s be real here. Amazon saves time and money (depending on product) for the consumer. 2 VERY important factors. Not to mention better choices depending where you live. But hey if you want to drive to stores to spend more money on something, IF they even have the product in stock, by all means go for it. Also helps having the reviews about the product and consumers personal experience with it, makes the whole shopping experience more efficient and resourceful. Majority of people don’t really care about the workers conditions because let’s face it , they are not forced to work there and some people just can’t hack it. And this is coming from someone that HAD 3 jobs.

OK you're a hero for working 3 jobs - but its not true that everyone doesn't care about working conditions, like you. Also you don't seem to have connected the dots regarding environmental issues. Yes Amazon saves you from driving, but it encourages unnecessary consumption, cardboard packaging overload and more wear & tear on the roads (heavy trucks). And it doesn't even pay all its tax load!

Janet Marks i recycle my boxes. So wouldnt amazon be worse if they shipped items that wasn't recyclable??

@@janetmarks28 Thank you, not all Hero's wear capes. Since when did the word "Majority" mean "everyone". You don't seem to connect my words with my meaning. I'm all for saving the environment personally. But "MOST" people..not "ALL"..when it comes down to it, will put their own benefits/interest first. That's just the "real world"we live. It's also becoming more cynical I notice. I'm probably just gettin old and grumpier....

Sorry - misread your post - your belief that the majority of people don't care about workers conditions sounds like you've swallowed the Ayn Rand brand of economic theory - the one where the individual fights for him or herself and regulations are seen as against human nature and the right to freedom. Look at what happened to Sears & Co. when the CEO reorganised it according to this credo.

Wow, the hate on Jeff Bezos is so palpable here. Get over it, technology innovates markets and industry and things change. Brick-and-mortar stores, for the most part, are becoming more antiquated. This is what efficiency looks like.
@elan007
@elan007 5 лет назад
Efficiency does NOT look like a few monopolies controlling all the world's resources, our minds, and our choices.
@macazootie
@macazootie 5 лет назад
elan, Amazon is hardly a monopoly. They provide a platform for tons of smaller businesses to distribute their goods to a much wider consumer base. If you don't see the irony in your mind-control comment, I just don't know what to tell you...perhaps it's too late, and you're right; they are controlling your mind.
@macazootie
@macazootie 5 лет назад
Elizabeth Whitehouse please explain how that meets the definition of 'efficiency'. Old technology makes way for innovation. Early adopters of new innovation are usually at the forefront of capitalizing on emerging technologies. No one is forcing anyone to patronize or work at Amazon, but yet, here they are doing scads of business, opening tons of distribution centers of every kind and offering people jobs left and right. Which, I might add, come at $15/hr to start, even without a day of previous experience, and benefits starting on the first day.

I stopped buying from Amazon years ago, mainly books. Now, here in England, I get my books from a great UK supplier, ABE, which has a host of local bookshops on its books. Bezos frightens me. Puts his billions in a plan for Mars, having stuffed up this earth and many peoples' lives. No soul.
