AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on RU-vid are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

Sailun’s S637 are awesome. And bonus, they are super heavy trailer tires. Ours are 14 ply for our heavy fifth wheel toyhauler. 235/85-16

I had 2 blowouts with trailer tires on my boat trailer. Now I use LT's. They're not Michelins, but I haven't had any problems since doing so. What comes on your trailer is there to protect the rims during shipment ;)

The only blow-outs I have ever had were trailer tires. I have never had a blow-out while using LT tires with the same or higher load rating.

It's me. I put Hankook Vantra LT tires on my popup trailer. I got 6 years out of the first set, and now is on the second set. Absolutely great. I have GPMS sensors, also reinforced the entire wheel well with a single sheet of .063" thick 304 stainless steel. It's ready for Alaska.

I tow a toy hauler. It's a three axle 40' trailer. I switched from a 15" St tire to a 16" LTX 10 ply Michelin. It was a pricey upgrade. But worth every penny. I have never had a blowout. I think the trailer even tows easier because of. Good choice on your part.

Yep, I had the same issue. I bought a used 20' Airstream and one of the Goodyear tires blewout on the Interstate. I switched to 16" Michelin LTs. Have not had a single issue in the last 3 years I have had them. Will start my 4th season with them as soon as the snow melts in Idaho.

Thanks for your great information on tires, and safety. We have brand new Michelin tires on our ‘04 Airstream 396XL Class A motorhome. What we did notice however is that the original valve stems were reused and were severely corroded. We are on the road and found a local tire store recommended by an RV dealer to change out all the valve stems. Now our TPMS system is happy. Keep up these great videos! .....Russell D.

The Firestone and Uniroyal scandals of the late 70's taught car companies to not put the cheapest tires they could get on their vehicles. The recent problems with cheap Chinese tires on many RV's with the resultant lawsuits are teaching the RV companies the same lesson. I am seeing more and more RV's coming with better tires on them from the get go. Two areas you do not skimp on, tires and brakes.

After 30,000 miles of towing our Airstream FC 30, which came with the Goodyear Marathon tires, we switched to the Goodyear Endurance. Considered the LT’s but didn’t want to spring for new rims. So far so good with the GYE. We had no issues with the old Marathons other than constant worry they would blow up at any moment. As usual, Thanks for the super informative vid.

Good video guys. In Aus just about every rv'er runs LT tyres, great piece of mind. One other thing too is don't over tighten wheel nuts with impact drivers. There has been some cases where the wheel has come off the trailer due to the studs shearing off. The nuts should be tensioned to the CORRECT torque. Safe travels guys.

I concur 100% !!!! Trailers of all types way back when always ran a LT tire. My first Horse trailer had 15" bias PLY Lt truck tires and we ran that trailer for over 10 years on the tires the trailer was delivered with and NEVER had a flat tire and we ran a lot of rough gravel roads, when the tires WORE out we put the same load range E bias ply LT tire back on it and we NEVER had a flat. We upgraded to a New Logan Horse trailer and it came with the Good Year marathon ST radial 16" tires and we had 5 flats in less than a year !!! 4 were gravel punctures between the threads and one was a screw, and interestingly enough all were on the back axle !!!! Good year was absolutely useless in any help with the problem and just blew me off!!! Sooo I bought 5 brand new Bias ply Load range E of the largest 16 inch size, trailer had 16" wheels from the factory and we ran those tire for 10 years, never had a flat or problem and the tires were still on the trailer when I sold it. And they were NOT Goodyear tires and I have Not bought a good year tire since, to hell with them for marketing a crap tire and refusing to stand behind them.

We used Goodyear Marathon 15 inch tires on two fifth wheels. Had several blowouts on the highway, and both trailers suffered major damage (thousands)--thank heaven for insurance! Have used Carlisle tires (trailer type) on various trailers since the '70's with no issues. Our present fiver is a 40 foot Sabre with a GVWR of 13750. We run Carlisle Radial Trail tires 235X85X16 Load range E. That load range rating is critical when switching tire types. Make sure LT tires are rated at or higher than the ST you are replacing or you will overheat and blow out. Never had an issue with Carlisle ST tires and don't expect to. I will look at the Michelin's though when replacement time comes. Keep up the good work!

Hello from Tuscaloosa. Your "real world experiences" mirror mine. With over 20 years of RVing in travel trailers and 5vers, I have had numerous tire failures with ST tires and never one failure with LT tires. I've had my best luck with BFGoodrich TA Commercial LTs. I also follow the tire care guide lines on Goodyear's website for long term storage of tires. "Jack tires off the ground during the off season and air down 50%." I really believe this is the key to prolong tire life especially on RVs that spend most of their life just sitting. I enjoy your channel, always informative from your "real world" experience 👍

I think it's great that you have truck tires on your trailer... There are no reasons not to do this! However, you did not mention at at speed! This is the main cause of blowouts on trailer tires... They get REALLY hot generally and over 60mph even more than you would think! In Europe you are not allowed to tow a trailer faster than 60mph for exactly that reason... What speeds do you guys tow your trailer at? I would be curious to know! Incidentally we have the same rules for large trucks as well... I remember on numerous visits to the US how fast the semi trucks would be traveling and how many bits of tires there were on the shoulder of the freeway. Great video guys... Keep it up!
@wilburfinnigan2142

Jason IF you have the right load rated LT tire on a trailer you can tow it as fast as the tire is rated for !!!! Be sure your trailers are NOT overloaded !!! It is good to weigh your LOADED trailer as you would for a trip !!! You ought to have seen the looks on the weigh master when I pulled my loaded horse trailer with THREE horses on to the scale !!! Priceless !!!

Well. I get less heat and other trouble at 62 mph or less, but the " China bombs" have gone off on me running 55 on a highway in the rain, an hour after leaving home. Can't remember the last time a car or truck tire went, except for tread wear or nails.

I agree with the LT tires, 100 %. A few years back a fellow RV er kept blowing out motor home reat tires. Along with above tire fibergless and wood work. I looked at the tires and found the tire's were not rated for the weight if the unit. He said they put on the same tires that blew out thus the new tires kept blowing out.

Hi Guys, Thanks for another very informative video. Out here in Australia most 4wd’s add light truck tyres. We replaced our Dunlop’s with Cooper ST Max on both the Landcruiser and the campertrailer. These tyres proved to be very good not only wear wise but also from the aspect of punctures. Over this way many of the outback areas have only dirt roads thus a tyre with a stronger sidewall is essential. I also have an internal TPMS system installed. This has been particularly useful not only for pressure monitoring but more importantly temperature monitoring. On outback roads tyre pressures need to be reduced to cope with the corrugations and rocks. Lower pressure means higher tyre temperatures thus monitoring of such temperatures allows you either to raise or lower pressures or adjust your speed. The only puncture I have had was on an unsealed road into Alice Springs. A stone tore the sidewall open. This sent the TPMS into alert mode. I stopped and the tyre had only half deflated. Thus no other tyre damage. Unfortunately the sidewall damage meant that it could not be repaired but I was certainly impressed by the TPMS. Look forward to your solar install videos.

I know I've mentioned this in another one of your videos but I agree 100% on LT tires for trailers. When we bought our 2016 Bighorn, we went shore to shore in the lower 48 and had issues with the brand-new 110 psi 'trailer tires', twice. Once home, I switched the rims and tires out. Michelin LTX M/S2 Tires have been on the rig now since late 2016 and not a single issue. The trailer also rides smoother, even corners and brakes better. I additionally replaced my boat trailer tires with LT tires due to our experiences. Additional bonus is that availability of LT replacement tires (if needed) is far easier to find than special trailer tires, especially 110 psi trailer tires.

I just couldn't leave Florida on trailer tires. I am happy that I saw your video about tires. We switched our rims and tires to 16". The tires we went with was Micheline Light Truck Tires. After 2.5 months of the most scary conditions. I didn't worry about the tires on our single axle tires. Light truck tires are the way to go IMHO.

When I bought my new 27FB over two years ago, I asked the dealership to upgrade the standard tires to the Michelin’s. Not sure if it was done at the factory or the dealership but they were available as an (unadvertised) upgrade. So appreciate and enjoy your videos. They have cost and saved me much $$$$. Running the factory issued Westlake tires on our 2 year old truck and no problem as of yet. I watch my tire pressure and I stop about every hour for a break and do a circle of safety on my rig checking tires, bearing heat and connections. The number of suggestions by Internet tire “experts” is overwhelmingly all over the place as tire issues are not a simple one reason for a blowout or flat. Considering Endurance tires as several on our forum have suggested, but I have always had very good luck with the tires you mention on my truck (300,000 + miles). I think choice of quality tires is part fact, part opinion, and part listening to others. I really value your recommendations as they are based on lots of research and experience. I have 15” rims now so will have to see if I can go up a size. Thanks for a great video.

We had an 07 TT and 4 of the 5 goodyear tires that came on it blew out. I put LT tires on it and had no problems at all whatsoever. On our new 2017 5th wheel I decided to go with the Endurance. I spoke with several tire shops in the process of upgrading and they all recommended to go with them. According to one guy I spoke with, in California it is against the law for tire shops to install a light truck tire on a trailer. I don't know whether or not that is the truth but we didn't purchase from that shop. I didn't do any homework on that though. I did go with the shop near me and they did me absolutely right on the price. Great video!!! Pat

Glad to see someone put this on RU-vid it was an issue that I resolved 10 years ago. There is a reason for these failures that people overlook and you never hear tire dealers bring it up. I pulled a 45 foot Tandem Axle that grossed 14,000 lbs with F-350. ( SPEED RATING ) You hear load rating, trailer stability with ST tires and inflation, but it seems that no one ever addresses the speed rating. I suffered tire failures in the beginning at an alarming rate and catastrophic failures that ripped off fenders and slung rubber a 100 feet into the air. So I had to figure this out, before it got me killed. Do you know the average interstate speed around the country; well it is above the speed rating of the ST tire and most people will drive at or about the posted speed limit. THIS IS THE REASON I WENT TO LT TIRES AND MY PROBLEM VANISHED....! DO NOT EXCEED THE SPEED RATING...! Tire manufactures allow 10 minutes above the speed rating and then you are in the zone for failure..! Industry standards dictate tires with the ST designation are speed rated to ( 65 MPH ) under normal inflation and load conditions. The higher the speed rating, the better control and handling you'll have at higher speeds. The speed rating system was developed to help control the safe performance of tires at standardized speeds. A tire's certified speed rating is given a letter from A to Z, ranging from 5km/h (3mph) to above 300 km/h (186 mph). The speed rating tells you the speed the tire can safely maintain over time. (A higher speed rating usually means you will have better control and handling at higher speeds - and that the tire can take the extra heat ). As a general rule, tires with higher speed ratings also handle better at slower speeds. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) set the ratings scale, shown below. But tire makers test their own tires and assign their own speed ratings. On the sidewall of every tire, you'll find one of these speed rating codes: M - Up to 81 mph N - Up to 87 mph P - Up to 93 mph Q - Up to 99 mph R - Up to 106 mph S - Up to 112 mph T - Up to 118 mph H - Up to 130 mph V - Up to 149 mph W - Up to 168 mp Y - Up to 186 mph

I so appreciate your advice on travel trailer tires. LT is a very smart investment in a trailer tire. I actually "upgraded" to Michelin ST endurance on my smaller (4200 dry) tandem axle travel trailer from the off-brand that came stock. I will say my towing experience has been a night-and-day kind of difference in stability and the tread wear has been excellent over 10k miles. That said, I think the added safety factor afforded by the LT is worth every penny.

I put the same, exact wheel and tire setup on our 25 foot Airstream and it has been completely trouble free. Would never run anything else.

As the Spring quickly approaches in the Northeast, I've been thinking a lot about this. I need to do some homework, but its an important assignment and I'm glad that you reminded me to dig in. Can't wait for the solar video. I'm betting the genset still gets a place in Seymore.

I'm happy so far with my good year endurance tires on our 25FBT. However I run Michelin on all of our autos.

Goodyear Marathon tires were mostly made in China and did have a lot of problems. Goodyear Endurance tires are made in the USA and do not suffer the problems that plagued the Marathon. LT tires are made for light trucks, not trailers. ST tires have a much stiffer sidewall and are made specifically for trailers. They are rated for speeds up to 87 mph. I have Goodyear Endurance tires on both my trailers and have never had a failure.

I've been doing the same thing on my trailers for 20 plus years. I use Firestones though. My first trailer, a 1973 Excella Airstream had truck tires on it the first day I owned it. I replaced those tires 11 years later. We went to a 6 year old 40 ft 5th wheel and two blowouts in the first 2k miles. One of the blowouts took out all the trailer lighting and brake wires. I replaced all of those with new Firestones and have since crisscrossed the country, and have racked up 23k miles so far without a problem. Go truck tires.

I've been using automotive on my small boat trailer, and now LT tires on my big fiberglass hauler. It's worked for me for 22 years. I will be replacing mine for summer.

Great info! I agree if the load rating fits, proper truck tires should be fine. I also agree with TPMS. I get to have an idea of what normal heat/ pressure is, when I see deviation/ drift in either I can take action. I will look into those Michelin’s!
