GPU business was locked with GCN architecture and perceived as failure with Vega. Navi was in the making, arrived 6 month later than anticipated. And apparently the first year was reserved as landing process to clear incertainties and allow software drivers to mature. Hoping to really push the limits of Navi in a second generation. Apparently this year there will be Big Navi 2.0 with RayTracing. Considering the amount of pressure on AMD to win in all markets, it is good to know the GPU for home customers is not abandoned.

I would love to see good ol ATI back. As far i as remember the most succe AMD ever had was when ATI brand still wasn't devoured into AMD. Ps: but the issue is that many people that were in charge of ATI back then are gone now, brand it self wont give (+20%) to performance.
@snetmotnosrorb3946
@snetmotnosrorb3946 5 лет назад
There is David Wang... but yeah, the old ATI is dead. Those buffoons at AMD believed that the good reputation of ATI graphics would spill over to the CPUs if they transitioned the branding to AMD. I and everyone I heard of thought it was a bad thing. I immediately realised that it would go the other way around. And look what happened. ATI was always a stronger company and brand despite being smaller. AMD dragged them down and almost killed itself in the process.

30:59 The part where you that if you were nivida’s CEO, that you would make two different Nivida Shields. One that is Cheap and runs games via the cloud and one that is more expensive but has enough power to run games locally. That is Microsoft’s Exact strategy for the Xbox Consoles of the 9th Console Generation! One Xbox Console that runs off Microsoft’s cloud gaming platform ‘Xcloud’ and another more expensive Xbox that has a Disc Drive, can play games locally, doubles as a Dev Kit, has backwards compatibility with all Xbox consoles before it, can also use Xcloud, can stream games using Xcloud from any device (meaning it can play PC games and games from other game platforms), has cross play with Competing Consoles (such as Nintendo’s Hardware (currently Nintendo Switch) and Sony’s PlayStation), accept accessories (such as keyboards and Mice) and run on Resolution’s upwards of 720p (including 4K and 8K. Also has HDDR 10 support). To be honest Microsoft is probably the best at developing disruptive technology (compared to other tech giants) while keeping it under the same roof. For example Microsoft’s OneCore strategy; it unified all Microsoft’s Product’s such as Hololens, Windows, Xbox, Azure and Windows Phone; all completely different businesses, with completely different audiences and completely different purposes under one roof. A good example of a disruptive product made by Microsoft is: Xbox, the Xbox was completely new and had to compete with Nintendo and Sony; even though it didn’t do a scratch to neither Nintendo or Sony. Once it was round 2, with the Xbox 360. Microsoft dented Nintendo but not just made a dent in Sony, No when it came to Sony, Microsoft made a gaping hole In Sony. It ended up being very disruptive for Sony forcing them to restructure and Sony placed THIER bets on the PS4. Another example is Azure, Microsoft’s Server, Internet infrastructure and data mining business. Microsoft are placing THIER server farms in the OCEAN meaning they can reach more places than Amazon’s AWS and (Currently) Google’s Web service. So while Amazon are busy trying to get land to place THIER server farms, Microsoft is using THE OCEAN (something that is owned internationally, just like how no one can actually gain land on Antarctica). Meaning Microsoft can put THIER Azure infrastructure where Amazon and Google (Currently) cannot, meaning that those places (for now) rely on Azure therefore meaning more users and more profits. Also Windows Phone, Yes Currently Win Phone is dead BUT while Apple Inc is starting to crumble, Microsoft is preparing to relaunch Windows Phone and Takeover Apple Inc in the Smartphone business. I do just hope that Microsoft can still keep up this streak of innovation and that even though the new CEO is opening up to customers that he doesn’t get trapped. Listening to customers is a good thing, you know so it’s a lot easier to fix stuff like bugs but I just hope that it stays at that; fixing bugs and glitches. *[Posted on Saturday the 25 of May 2019]*

So if i can split 3 tabs out of my browser window onto 3 seperate monitors and hook 3 sets of mouse/keyboard up to my already pretty old pc. whats the point? Apex barely uses 30% of a 7 year old cpu on video settings that make me not even care that video settings exist due to how good it looks AND runs which lets me care about only how the game plays(the actual "Way its meant to be played").So with Vulkan / Linux / Arm / Mobile / Game streaming about to take off all at once the emphasis is on whether or not ill have to upgrade EVER(like forever ever) again, or just download linux(or android) on my cell phone/tablet that has 2 gigs of ram,running vulkan streaming doom eternal at who gives a fk settings while waiting in line at the local mac d's jus cos...google said i could when they teamed up with amd to offer the same game streaming service nvidia already has up and running but with that little google twist to it(the services they offer already). Do i spend the money(200usd for a 580x) on a video card that DOES gain me roughly 50% performance increase or another tablet(nvidia k1 shield,5 years old) that increases my performance by 300% - 400% and does "all the other things". Keep in mind im an indie game developer so ive taken that into account too(dev environments etc) not just game performance.

you deserve 1M subs by now dude. Great videos. Your videos should be mandatory screening at all large tech corps; their employees need to get a bigger box view on the industries and what is obviously lacking is historical context. I love the way you examine the birth era of computing from a capital investment point of view.

It is rare to watch such good video ! Awesome ! Maybe a quick comparison with Amazon attitude compared to other buisness could be a benefit, but it is already a long video. However, it would not have bothered to watch an hour long video. You can still slpit up the video into smaller video and call it a playlist.

ATI group is based in Toronto. Their engineering costs are significantly lower than the Ryzen engineering costs. They are physically independent from the rest of AMD, in the Bay Area. Seconductor costs are the same as the dies are made in Taiwan. They could be very disruptive with ideas and these can be re integrated into the CPUs at a latter date. Intel has established their integrated GPU division in Toronto.

You're proposing AMD splits its CPU and GPU products into two effectively independent subsidiaries, each tasked with pursuing its own goals in its own ways. But AMD's entire survival strategy is about converging and streamlining its operations, minimizing redundancies and maximizing economies of scale.

I probably count as an AMD fan, have been rooting for them especially back in 2015 when I had heard about the kinds of architectural changes they were planning for Zen, and later when we heard more specifics about their experimentation with power gating in APUs. Currently I'm more interested in what Intel is planning with their application specific accelerators. They seems to be targeting the robotics and machine vision segment quite a lot right now. Movidius is turning out to be a real monster, and I am curious if they will push for integration of it with a more general purpose CPU to create a high performance embedded processor. They have a real chance of consuming the autonomous vehicle and robotics market that Nvidia has been trying to get into for the last few years. And with their aquisition of Altera they may very well take a large part of the server accelerator market as well. Their researching the use of heterogeneous CPUs similar to the ARM big.LITTLE may greatly improve scaling in markets like these where you need a few high performance cores and a bunch of other less general purpose resources to crunch away at large datasets.

@Matthew McKellar Intel seem to be on the right track, after stumbling for a while. I'm not too sure about Mobileye though, they seem a bit limited in terms of tech. They certainly have the business side nailed down though.
@williamforbes6919
@williamforbes6919 5 лет назад
@@Coreteks Take a look at the RealSense T265 and its use of the Movidius chips. It shows the kind of performance gap we are approaching with dedicated vs general purpose accelerators. 260hz update rate with SLAM localisation vs around 17hz on an Nvidia TX2 using the CUDA branch of ORB_SLAM2. There are obvious limitations with the size of the dataset, but the performance and power consumption difference is extremely impressive. Mobileye seems dead in the water, and it appears they are working on a completely different hardware and software stack to replace it. We have to see how much of the software stack is opened up, based on the GitHub page comments it seems like programmable compute will made available within a few months. Interest in making their V-SLAM software capable of running on an accelerator attached to the host was also mentioned, this would enable them to sell their ASICs for integration into a vendors platform. The amount of related software being pushed to their git repository would support the notion they are taking this seriously. They might just kill this like they did with Curie and Joule though, it wouldn't be the first time.
