We're performing Spring hive inspections to see which of our hives on John's farm survived the winter and who is ready for the spring nectar flow. Spoiler Alert: All four colonies survived, three are thriving and one is struggling a bit. We have put up swarm traps on the farm again this year and hope to continue these strong genetics.
We are practicing natural beekeeping methods using Layens horizontal hives that we built ourselves. To get a copy of the plans that we downloaded for free and used to build our swarm boxes, frames, horizontal hives and insulated horizontal hives, click here: horizontalhive...

Thanks, Brice! It will be Spring up there pretty soon. Just hang on a little bit longer. Thanks for continuing to support our channel. We're always happy to hear from you up there in NH.

That one guy shure is bossy!

He is. But in his defense, that was the first time Dan has ever worked the bees. Roy was trying to keep him from getting stung and from getting the bees all riled up.

Do yall use the 14 or 19 frame layens hive?
@randsbees
@randsbees 6 месяцев назад
Those are all 14-frame hives in this video. We have 3 of the 19-frame hives in other locations.

@@randsbees do the 14 frames seem to be enough for the bees to have enough to over winter and possibly have extra honey for you I’m just getting into bee keeping

@jerrymcmahan2855 Yes. We normally reduce the number of frames down to 6 or 7 for the winter. That's leaving at least 3 frames of honey for the bees, which has been enough for ours. Last year, we had about 7 gallons of honey that we harvested from the frames we removed from the hives. The 19-frame hives are great if you want to do in-hive splits. You can put half of your brood frames and resources on one side of the box and half on the other with a divider board between them. You don't have to find the queen. The bees will make a new queen on the side without a queen. We tried this a couple of times with limited success.

@@randsbees ok thanks a lot I wasn’t sure I saw the 14 frame ones on horizontal hive and was wondering if they were actually big enough to house the bees and possibly still have enough to harvest a little honey
