@@NotAnotherKuromi some martial arts have demonstrative competitions like tai-kwon-do where you can compete in forms, traditional weapons, and improvised weapons including sparring. The shit weapon specialists in TKD can do looks like it defies physics. My niece is highly competitive in national TKD (3rd dan black belt) and is being scouted potentially for the next summer Olympics (which isn't a huge deal at this stage they're scouting hundreds of people). She competes in sparring but traditional weapons, bostaff specifically, is what she really enjoys. She does this one set where she tosses the staff forward, grabs it at the end then plants it to use as an anchor to do a double kick and does an overhead swing as her feet hit the ground again. It helps shes like 5 foot nothing and 110 pounds of almost pure muscle (she's been doing this since she was 12 and she's 22 now). BJJ has no real demonstration competition it's 100% competitive sparring. There's not a lot of striking in traditional BJJ it's about grappling and submission of an opponent.

As someone who worked for a Taekwondo school I can say that the first guy's story about him acting up and getting enrolled in TKD by his mom represents like half the kids who are in it. It's basically a lot of lazy parents who don't want to discipline their kids and they heard from their other Mom friends how sending their child to TKD fixed them. To be fair it usually works out to the kid's benefit. Parents also love that they can bring their kid in every time they get in trouble to talk to the instructors because the kids actually respect their instructors and it works lol EDIT: Just rewatched the beginning and realized he said "a taekwondo gym".... There were at least two things made me think that Adriana was the mole. Her performance literally felt like just a performance, not an actual form. She called Jessica's form "a color belt form", when it was actually a 2nd dan black belt form, even though she should know that form because she said she was a 3rd dan balck belt in taekwondo. So I decided to do a little digging. She has plenty of videos going around youtube from other performances she's done in competitions. She has an emblem in the back that's from the ATA XMA (Xtreme Martial Arts). Notice the X in Xtreme. They market themselves as "an elite level of training that blends martial arts with exciting acrobatics and performance-style presentation". And if you watch any students of this, you'll notice this exact thing. It's a performance. It's as much taekwondo or martial arts as the blue power ranger's performance. And that is literal. He (Mike Chat) created XMA. Which is not to say that there are no martial arts, but that obviously the priority lies elsewhere. So if she felt like a mole to you, this is why. Like it can look cool (which it actually does. Her performance here is somewhat meh, but her other past performances do look pretty cool) but I feel it's kinda iffy to say it's martial arts, much less specifically taekwondo. I don't know. Its just very uncomfortable.

Plus the way she was throwing the sword around just didn't feel like it would work at all in an actual fight. You never want to let go of your weapon because your opponent will immediately take the opening.

Not all martial arts are the same though. I've done martial arts involving weapons and forms or katas are very performative. Also people can make their own forms for performances. Take a look at Taylor Lautner's old videos. He does things much like her and he was a tkd champion I'm pretty sure. Also the way she performed it, I thought Jessica was doing a colour belt form and I'm a tkd black belt as well
@Jomczx
@Jomczx 2 года назад
@@wyattp8479 Yes, there are some forms that look performative. There are even literal demonstration shows that are purely performative, but even those dont look like these. Like, even considering the shouting that is done in katas, the shouting here was just overdone. Like, Ive never seen shouting in between moves, while recovering from moves, AND at the end while youre **just** standing there screaming at the top of your lungs for 3 seconds. Not because you kicked, punched, or did some other intensive action. She literally just stood and shouted. Even purely performative stuff is too different from this, imo. Like, you may find something like that, but Ive never seen anythign displaying *all* of this together in the same form. I looked at taylor lautners stuff, but i can only see that hes also in XMA, and that his wins are also in this area or something like it. I cannot find evidence of him winning actual combat tournaments. And again, im not saying that there is no martial arts involved. There obviously is. XMA is based on it. But I feel comparting XMA artists to martial artists is like comparing people like justin beiber with classical musicians. Neither is *better* or *worse* or *more talented* or anything like that. Both are musicians, but the skills, repertoire, styles and focus are completely different. Theyre different skills. One is focused showmanship, and the other one isn't. It's also kind of weird, because I cant find what he does specifically. Some mention karate, some mention tae kwon do, some mention XMA. Maybe he does all three. WHo knows. It;s just weird. Sure, by itself thinking it was a such a form is not a big deal. It's *everything* I mentioned together.

The last one voted out reminds me of a vastly more nervous version of this "black belt" who once randomly showed up at the dojo where I trained as a kid, then demanded to fight us. My sensei understandably thought the dude was either a jackass or an idiot, so he asked this guy (late teens, probably) a few questions before agreeing. I couldn't hear the conversation clearly, but it concluded with my sensei chuckling and saying, "Sure, feel free to ask any of these guys to grapple," while pointing to me and the other advanced students. The dude put on a tough face and pointed to the largest of my peers. As the two of them went to the mat, my sensei walked over beside me and just whispered, "McDojo", his derogatory nickname for a group of chain taekwondo dojo companies notorious for training which was an utter joke. Their black belts were the equivalent of a student starting their third year of training in the various styles and legitimate training groups I've interacted with over the years. My huge peer made the McDojo kid tap out in a matter of maybe 10 seconds. He stood back up, pissed, and pointed at another of my friends. They were the smallest of the group, so he probably figured that was a smart choice. It took my small peer about the same amount of time, and after being beaten by a literal child a foot shorter than him, he made some random snippy remarks and left. The only thing I ever saw in training funnier than that incident was a time when a pretty new student managed to pin the instructor (with some massive handicaps on what the latter was allowed to do) using what they loudly declared to be "The koala choke hold!" like an anime character calling out a kamehameha or something. So damned cute...

To be fair to Jessica, most TKD schools belong to one of two styles, WTF or ITF, and most of the time the instructors don't tell their students about this distinction because it isn't really important. The main difference between the two is that the curriculum forms might be taught in a different order, and WTF style is recognized and allowed by the Olympic committee and ITF is not. Other than that there are no meaningful differences between the two styles. That would also explain why the one girl said "your form looked like a color belt form" but in Jessica's school it was not. Thirdly!, not being able to explain a side kick is not the hallmark of a faker. This is just the basic difference between expert and teacher. You can be an expert at something while being a horrible teacher of it, and not every black belt has an instructor role. Some just train to work on their own practice. IDK, I feel like they came down too hard on Jessica.

I remember when my brothers did karate when they were younger; they wanted to go much further with it but I think they only got to the purple belt and were close to getting the next one. The studio the lessons were held in was switched like three times and then some new lady was instructing and taught nothing new, so they weren't really advancing. They really enjoyed it though. One of them has always liked stuff like that; I remember at one point he was practicing his moves in the living room and did a kick in the air and fricken kicked the light on the ceiling fan and busted it- it was hilarious, he took off running thinking he was in trouble and my mom's just like "Holy crap, are you okay? You did that?" Ah, good times.

actually when our studio was still open, our instructor told us to yell and make "chhk" noises when sparring or during forms as an intimidation tactic (and also because it helps you put more force behind your blows) edit: I would also like to mention that the form Jessica performed is one that is taught to higher belts in our federation (because the two are companion practices) and helps to teach patience and balance. not all forms are high energy and fast paced and offensive, which to me says that she is probably a more experienced student

I did taekwondo for years and I could have sworn Jessica was the fake. She showed the skills I would expect a yellow belt to have. But I guess her class runs differently... Also, yelling is a very martial arts thing. I was told that it helps you release your breath and create more power while also scaring your opponent.

I took a Taekwondo class for a couple of years and I will say that yelling was like a main part of it in a way. My instructor would also tell us to yell anytime we landed a blow or after we finished certain routines. So the yelling is actually very martial art like.

I think I get why Keith chose to back out. He turned his life around completely via martial arts, and lying about that, even for a game or whatever, could totally feel like taking a shit on everything he's done to be a better person and the person he wants to be. Like, he thought it'd be fine and fun at first, but the guilt got to him, and he realized he didn't want to be that person again? He even apologized about ruining the game. What a genuine guy, and respect to him for sticking to his morals and how he feels, and respect to everyone else for being understanding in how obviously impactful martial arts has been for him. EDIT: HOLY SHIT, KEITH, MY MAN, YOU LIVED IN MY STATE IN AN AREA I'VE LITERALLY LIVED IN, WTF, I'M EVEN MORE IN AWE, DUDE--

As soon as I saw Keith’s demonstration I knew it was him. If he rotated those wooden planks by 90 degrees he wouldn’t have been able to chop through them. The fact the other martial artists didn’t see through this incredibly common sham that many fake martial arts instructors infamously use to get sales saddens me.

22:00 with the old people having black belts thing, there's different age categories once you're over 50 I believe. Also, a black belt isn't as valid if you haven't done any training for longer than it took to get the belt. Perhaps that rule is not universal though.
@NotAnotherKuromi
@NotAnotherKuromi 2 года назад
Can you explain more about how a black belt isn't valid if you haven't don't the training? In my sister's karate class there were 6 year old twins who were about to get their black belt & was shocked at how they were able to achieve that in such a short length of time? Obviously they were gifted (their mum was idk how you say a professional karate person?) But they must have only been doing it for a couple of years max, maybe they practiced hard core?
@totallyrealnotfakelifeadvi7547
@totallyrealnotfakelifeadvi7547 2 года назад
@@NotAnotherKuromi Not to be too judgmental, but I'm not sure how a 6 year old could achieve a black belt. It also seems impossible for someone to reach such a high level in only two years, especially since even four years is considered too short by many to be legitimate. Then again, I can not know.

As someone who got a brown belt in Judo I immideatly guessed the jiu jutsu guy would get voted out at the demonstration lol. There are only very little *flashy* things you can do compared to Taekwondo, since there is no punching or kicking so people can dismiss it easily. He demonstrated his technique very well tho! I'm still sad he got voted out by everyone

When i joined my taekwondo studio i would stay after to practice for my white belt test there would be the competitive team practicing as well, i would be in the middle of practicing and just here the most blood curdling scream from them and it scared the shit out of me. It’s so normal to me now as someone who is now on the team that im like “oh i forgot this is weird to most people” the reason we yell for each move is for emphasis and also to help make sure you’re breathing. the yelling is very traditional.

Ok, bit: belts aren't all that important. They can indeed be a measure of skill, but when the west came into contact with Japanese martial arts, it took the belt system waaaaay too seriously (Karate didn't even have one originally, it originated in Judo and when Karate became mainstream in mainland Japan in the 1930s, they pushed it onto the style alongside several changes). Black belt isn't the end of the training, it's just another step forward.
