There's a UK panel show called Would I Lie To You where a contestant revealed that they [SPOILERS] broke up with a boyfriend because of the way he fell down the stairs.
@@alexisb3829 You don't really just "use up your energy" when committing to a character on a reality TV show which the peoducers 99.99% coerced you into
No, yeah, even today there are men that have said "if this were face-to-face I would've raped you" after being turned down over text, so... probably not, judging by that idiotic moment of processing "how do I make her feel more embarrassed and uncomfortable than I do right now" on his face right before exposing himself.
Fun fact, the writers strike was around 2008, and so trash reality became HUGE. Then they realised how cheap it was to made. I reckon they gave some actors from the local improv show some lunch and $20 and then made this show..
@@sadmermaid It happened to a lot of shows, Lost included. They had plans for full 22 episode seasons, but the writers strike meant a lot of shows had to cut back A LOT. Lots of storylines got abandoned or shortened, it made for a lot of weird and undercooked TV.
also not to mention when a contestant from I love money on VH1 murdered their girlfriend. after that scandle vh1 stopped all productions of dating shows. did not know this for years till i looked it up two years ago. That also may have contributed to everything changing in both MTV and VH1 content.
Are you slow? He was asking who the target audience was (who the show wanted/expected to watch the show) not who actually watched it. Can we get some critical thinking in this comment section
@@astronomical926 it's a common stereotype (especially back then) that south asian men are quick to propose and rope women into marriage. It's built off the back of the stigma behind arranged marriages.
Yeah it's nuts to watch this stuff from when I was a kid and be like "oh, so this is why my generations' women struggle to respect themselves and other women.... makes sense".
yeah i was like "this is... a literal crime." why did they let him back on the bus vs escorting him away with handcuffs? wtaf? (i know it was the culture back then, i remember it, it's just such a shock to see it now, so much older)
@@natashalawely2900 holy shit, same feeling, it makes me really hopeful that we've advanced so much culturally tbh, like there might be hope for humanity if we can change so much in a couple of decades... At least what's legally recognized
A thing to remember about the 'Keannu' remark is that there was quite a period of time where he was seen as a total joke of an actor/person. None of it was ever justified, but when this show was out, his reputation was nowhere near what it is today. While people loved the Matrix (first one anyway), that still wasn't enough to undo that stigma.
Did anyone else catch onto the fact that the guy who only earned a dollar last time got nexted for calling his date juggs.... which means he called a girl juggs within a minute of meeting her ???
At first, I was like "He was Nexted after only a minute? That SUCKS!" but then I saw that line and I said to myself "Actually I would've done the same thing."
To be fair to Charity, I would also lose all my energy if a man exposed himself to me and started chasing women around. I think I’d just walk off set and go home tbh
someone should start a podcast where they contact the people that were on this show and see where they are. actually, they should do that for all the unhinged 2000s dating shows
someone should make one of those 'you're in the bathroom at a party and bad guy is playing' type 3d sound videos but it's 'pov: you're jarvis johnson's neighbour' and the video is a still image of an apartment while you hear the milky goodness line muffled on your right as though he's on the other side of the wall
Imagine being an innocent teenager and then you find this video and one of those people in this show is your parent. First question I would ask was "so you were definitely paid in drugs and alcohol right?"
I thank the heavens that most common folk have moved on from the tactics of 2000s dating shows. Dating people is scary enough without the absolutely unhinged energy these people have. They give off "all my exes say im crazy lmao" vibes and I'm terrified.
2000s were wacky time. Not sure if it was the fashions back then (which look pretty cringy now) but at least they didn't cast a full line up of model-esque people like dating shows nowadays. Back then, most contestants looked like average people you would meet days to days. Now, you're just wondering how could these extremely attractive people not find a decent person to date (then you watch the show and you're like yep, no wonder you're single).
... But why though? This isn't porn, so I don't know why you'd be pandering to barely legal fetishists or anything, and I can't think of a woman in her mid-twenties feeling like she needs to be called younger. Or am I really stupid and missing a good reason to lie about their age?
I remember there was an episode of next where the man shoved an egg right up between the womens legs then nexted her when the eggs broke for women being shocked. I remember that scene so vividly because it felt so wrong to watch.
I mean even without this show we all knew those kids who would stop in the middle of their sentence and go "look a squirrel" pretending to have adhd is timeless
I know someone who participated back in 2005. He was approached randomly by a recruiter. He only did it cause his friends persuaded him. He said that the producers kept forcing him to say things he would never say and failed to try to make his job (data analyst) sound "sexy" haha
@@captainofthelosercruiser7355 trying to come up with related pickup lines and all I can come up with are: "ooh baby let me analyse _your_ data" "you may be an outlier, but you sure count to me" "Call me N/R/Q+, because I'm all natural/i keep it real/i'm _positive_ that we're a match for each other" "based on previous (dat)as(e)t(s), the probability of us falling in love is 100%" idk a lot about data analysis these are kinda just maths puns
How do people say don't shows sexual content to kids, and having any non-straight aspect to a show is super sexual, while also allowing this show to air TO KIDS?
Two people of the same gender in a loving relationship holding hands? That’s completely inappropriate. A man non-consensually exposing himself to a woman after being rejected? Now that’s more like it! /s
I mean to be fair it is mtv which isnt supposed to be a kids network, that being said it airing just in the afternoon when any kid could very easily tune in anyway is super fuckin weird
NEXT was absolutely insane, I remember they had a gay season of the show, and it was wild. Edit: I also remember a show that was called “Gay, straight or taken.” honesty, MTV comes up with the most absurd premises and makes them into dating shows
Wait, the „Gay, Straight or taken“-idea came from MTV? A German channel aires a show with the same… „concept“ like… right now. It’s still a thing here…
Do y’all remember the show FriendZone where they would have people pretend to create dream dates for their friends but it was really all a ploy to ask out their best friends out on national television?
Can we talk about parental control next? That show was wild if I’m remembering right. It was basically next but the parents had control over when the date ended and it had the be the craziest shit I’ve ever seen and I was only 8 when that was on
I'm reminded of an episode where the girlfriend they wanted to get rid of had this 'bad' personality where she would poop a lot and when she got 'dumped' she ran to the bathroom to take a shit
@@MellSayzHi So she was probably either mentally or physically ill in a way that affected her GI tract and they took that to mean she had a bad personality? 💀
@@lobstersonskateboards3988 lol it was. I used to watch it all the time and even though I was young I realized it was scripted af when that guy chose to leave his bf for his date, but the date was like,”Sorry but I like your boyfriend better” and then the boyfriend the parents hated and the date they chose kissed and left together. I was just like, “Ain’t no way…” 🤣🤣🤣
I'm pretty sure Next was the literal first time I saw gay people on TV. It was incredible to me that being not straight was 'normal' enough to be a dating show, felt like a personal win.
you can't tell me adam wasn't making an acting choice with the way he hesitated before he said "i'd like to at least match that" - the script gave him a joke and he delivered
I find myself singing "I trusted you, and now your words mean NOTHING to me because your actions spoke the THUTH" far, FAR TOO OFTEN. Thanks for getting it stuck in my head again, Jarvis! 🤣
my health teacher from last year was on an unaired episode of this show. if you had perfect attendance to her class all year she would show you the episode (because she had a dvd of it). My sister saw it but I never did because of COVID.
Low rise jeans were the pain of my existence as a child. My mother & grandmother only bought me low rise jeans & constantly told me to pull up my pants 🤦♀️
Only thing I appreciate about this show; everyone is an average person. Not all the same, or "conventionally attractive" people like most dating shows. I give them some respect there lol
Yeah, they’re also presented in a really wacky way. It’s not like they’re picking up big businessmen and models and treating them like they’re a huge deal. Although racist and sexist, it’s somewhat nice to see no one person being the focus for too long or some people being presented in a worse way than others in this kind of TV show. Everyone’s kind of a douche and imperfect in these shows, and everyone’s also a douche to each other. Which is probably a more accurate representation of humanity.
Those men getting nexted was a blessing in disguise, imaging dating someone with their lack of patience and failure to handle rejection in a healthy way 😭😭
@@Schylove12 I swear!! It's that weird genre where it's "adult" content for kids. I feel like once I was a sophomore I didn't even like the show anymore but it had a hold on me from like 12-15
@@rcarter1656 Yeah, it's targeted at kids who want to feel like they're in on adult things without having any understanding of what actual adulthood is.
I remember watching this and at 14 being way too invested, and having my feelings hurt when a normal person didn’t make it. I’m so glad I got older and understand how unrealistic it is.
7:07 the bus was driving and getting so close to the van that it took me a second to realize when it was slowing down and i just thought it was gonna crash into the van.
I had a bad day at my graduation award ceremony thing today and I got home just now I know it's not intentional, but thank you for uploading as I lay down, it's really made my day better and lightened my mood. 💚
@@wibwe Wait ok, this dating show has only walking red flags as participants, so the aroace version has to be the same but friendship version. They're all like "I borrow 600 dollars from you and don't pay it back" or "I'll cancel plans last minute to hang out with my SO instead" and you have to pick one to be friends with and then fight the rest as a team. It's called Frenemies
I believe every episode had 1 male and 1 female with "Next" power, and the girls took shots at the guys, too. Also, I really don't think the "Next" guys were supposed to be "Nice guys". The show was over-the-top back then, too.
This video is over now (over now), you'll find something else to watch (or just watch this video again) I know we had a lot of fun (a lot of fun), but you can't stay on this end screen forever (no) 🎶
i know i'm too gay for old dating shows because when they went to introduce the "daters" I fully expected a co ed group. that's not even how most current dating shows are, why did I think that?
omg king - this was HYSTERICAL. your commentary had me in tears, especially the rap tap routine. i used to watch this show growing up and is absolutely wild that THIS show was “normal”
Jesus the Keanu statement just reminded me so much of how uncool it was to like Keanu Reeves in the early/mid 2000s, and how vindicated I felt when the rest of the world realized that he’s awesome
No because right after he demonstrated to us what "ninga sex" was, I got an ad and the first thing it said was "it takes a lot to admit that you need help"
