How quickly we move on. I am old enough to remember when all you saw online was the Strymon Iridium. The crowd has since moved on, but I have remained here. Holding this little box close to my chest as I race through the sonic wilderness.
I go over some tone settings and some of they ways I like to use this great little amp in a box.

I've been using the strymon iridium on my pedalboard for 2 yrs now on recording sessions and for live shows. I also use a boost pedal in front of the iridium as with my overdrive pedal for a slight break up and my delay/reverb pedals after the iridium, I also feed the front of house system and use two powered headrush 12" speaker cabs for live stage shows in stereo. I might sometimes miss my tube amps (fender twin, mesa boogie, marshall) but I don't miss carrying them around. The Strymon iridium works for me!!!

I am an old school die-hard vintage equipment user. Guitars and amps. After hearing many sound samples, I tried the Iridium. It is extremely magnificent. It's so easy and intuitive. None of my amps have more than 3 knobs per channel. I am now paring down my vintage amps, which will be made obsolete with pedals like these. There's no substitute for a great guitar...yet.

Awesome review! I’ve been using the Iridium for the last 2 years. I did not fall in love with it right away. I was using the stock IRs and putting it very last in my chain, just like an amp. It did the job for me with that setup and I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t that inspiring either. I was considering getting rid of it, but decided to do some further experiments first. I stumbled on the Yorke Audio IRs, put it in the effects loop of my HX Effects, and setup an expression pedal to control the gain. Wow! I feel like it totally brought my rig to life after those changes. I use a Yorke Matchless IR that’s killer. Putting it in the effects loop gives me the ability to add wet effects and compression after the amp, like post production in the studio, but also not be stuck with it that way. And the expression pedal on the gain makes it very usable in a live setting. My next experiment will be to buy the MIDI cable and try controlling it with the HX Effects to change presets live. As far as its function in a live setting - if you’re used to using your amp itself as your monitor, standing in front of it all night and feeling the air your speaker(s) moves, then yes, it feels different from that and you might not like it. But if you’re used to monitoring thru a floor wedge, or especially in-ears, to my ears it’s indistinguishable. Not to mention much more flexible, portable, and consistent. I don’t think I’ll ever go back! Cheers!
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios Год назад
Cheers antipsycho! It is such a great pedal and still holds it own even against all the newer amp in a box pedals coming out. I gotta try your expression pedal trick on the gain. never thought about doing it that way before!

I need to experiment with the placement of my iridium….I use it live always at the end of my board and go direct but can it sit anywhere in the chain and can you then take whatever pedal is last in line (reverb) and just send that to front of house?
@antipsychosoup6709
@antipsychosoup6709 Год назад
@@stephenwares8317 Yep, you can put it anywhere in your signal chain and still send the end of the chain direct to front of house. Only issue is you won’t have anything after the Iridium if you use its headphone output. I usually put the Iridium at the end for clean sounds, then if I’m getting any overdrive from it I’ll put it before delay and reverb. Since it’s in the effects loop of my HXFX I can move it around in the signal chain as needed.

The Iridium is a great deal on the used market now and this video is still really relevant for anyone just looking to get great easy tones. I love the sounds you got with the Revival Drive into the Iridium. I have the Revival Drive Compact. Any suggestions? I only use it as a clean boost into my iridium right now, I wasnt sure what settings to use otherwise, and it seemed like I was going in circles picking an amp, then changing its sound with the revival drive compact. I will have to give it another try. I tried some York IRs, and they are super sounding! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks Patrick! I always use the Strymon on the Round (fender) setting. and set it super clean so gain around 12 o clock and treble and bass at 2 o clock and mids at 10 o clock. Then I set my revival drive on EQ 1 (bright amp setting) and just use the factory settings and they end up sounding great. The key is making sure the strymon is clean bc the distortion from the pedal doesnt play super nice with the drive from the revival drive. Hope this helps my friend!

Hey mr., hello Alex! Thanks for those video's - I watched the whole serie, and today I finally got my Iridium in a post package - second hand buy. I'm not one of those early innovators, so I must think: never even considered an amp modeller. But anyway: you pulled that trigger on me. I already had some York Audio IR's on my Boss Waza TAE. So: you do have a point, with an extra overdrive: real killer combination, even at bedroom (office ;-) -level. So, I'm gonna enjoy this new episode in my guitar-life. Thank you for that. But, can I ask you an extra question? Maybe I could search some online forum, but since I'm focussed on your tips 'n trics, I wanna ask you? Do you mind? Thanks in advance, and if 'no': no prob. As I (you) said: killer tone with an extra IR, room at pretty much max, and a quality-overdrive pedal in front, straight to the monitors. But what is really surprising, with only two guitars here with me (strat and jazzmaster), when rolling of volume you lose pretty much all of your tone between dialing 10 and 8/7 on the volume knob (a lot of high and high end just dissapears immediately). Eventhough I have good quality potentiometers in both guitars. So, does that sound familiar? I'm used of working with the volume knob for adding/reducing gain (even to 4 or 5 on P90-guitar), but with that change in tone, that won't be possible. Any thoughts, experiences or tips about that? PS real nice playing: I melted a little bit at 13'10'' ;-) Merci! Rudy

Hello, Rudy. Thank you for the thoughtful comment. Congrats on your Iridium! I know you will enjoy it. As for your question I have not experienced that. I will try to replicate that tonight and see if it happens the same way. Some questions: -What pedals are you using in front? -Are you using a buffer pedal in your signal chain at all? Beginning/end of chain/both? -What mixer are you using for your PA? -Does the same thing happen when bypassing the strymon and rolling volume down when using the OD pedals only? Let me know!

@@SuperdangerStudios Hi. Did some extra in-depth deep-diving this weekend ;-) Don't want to bother you too much, so just a quick update 'lessons learned'. Kept the signalpath very straight: guitar->EP-boost->Revivaldrive->Iridium->interface->DAW. So Revival and Iridium are buffered. (live: ...->Iridum->Yamaha Stagepass 1K + optional monitor Headrush FRFR112) Must be a pick-up thing: - Fender Jazzmaster: tonedrop stays the same, volumepot is not usuable - Fender Strat with Texas pick-up's: tonedrop, but not extra-ordinary - d'Angelico Premier DC with Lollar P90 and treble bleed (and the pot's are logarithmic I think): no tonedrop By the way: loaded my same IR in Boss Waza TAE as an extra 'line amp' for pushing the line level and skipping pedals, but that sucked the tone, no matter that same IR's (with Irdium in cab-bypass offcourse). So: case closed I think. Downscaling pedalboard and tech-set-up, and quality pick-up's ;-) Thx and see you on next video's! Rudy

I have a Strymon Iridium and just loaded some York Audio IR's based on your recommendation - FTWN 212 D120 (Fender Twin), BMAN 410 P10Q (Bassman), and DXVB Verb Deluxe (Deluxe Reverb). These IR's are a huge improvement over the factory settings, adding a fatness and warmth. I play a Princeton Reverb clone (Headstrong Lil' King) and these hit the tone pretty nicely. The FTWN and BMAN have a lot more complexity than the DXVB. Maybe something to do with them being later releases? I loaded all with the SM57 position 2 settings. Do you have any favorite mic settings for the York Audio IR's that you could share?
@SuperdangerStudios

Thanks for the comment and Greatvto hear you are enjoying the IRs! They make the Iridium sound like a whole new pedal. I agree that I found the dxvb does not sound as intricate as the other ones and perhaps you’re right. Might be due to the earlier techniques they were using or even the speaker itself. As for my favorite mixes I will do a video on my favorite sounds although a lot of it depends on the guitar I am using and the context of the use. I.e. solo, lead lines, comping etc.

So the latency could have been coming from a bunch of diff sources. I also prefer the knobs and switches. The iridium is not nearly as expansive as the axe system and I think for most people the axe system is the best call. Cheers!

I’d get an HX Stomp for your needs. 1000x more features, fx’s, amp models. The iridium is meant if you already have a bunch of pedals you like and just need a clean pedal platform. The HX Stomp is an all in one rig and immensely versatile
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 2 года назад
Hi Dmitry, depends on what your budget and intent is. As Jay said below, the HX stuff is really nice and the stomp is about $600 and cheaper used. The stepmom and walrus audio acs1 both have good cleans as well and are $400 new. All of these pedal setups can do a good clean so I would just take advantage of free returns from Sweetwater. Hope this was helpful.

Hello. I'm really close to sell my Helix to buy the Iridium. It sound good but I'm very much more in love with my pedals and I'm tired of all those options but I'm really afraid of the change...I don't know if it will take my pedals well, if I'm going to miss all those tonal options for my home recording, but the possibility to use it in pedalboard if/when needed, or to connect my amp to it instead of using a microphone looks like a pretty intresting and practical solution...what do you think?
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 2 года назад
Have you tried the Iridium before? I would try before you sell and see if it is worth the change. Ona small question: What do you mean when you say "connect your amp to it"? This is just a preamp essentially, so a poweramp is still needed to power a passive speaker, however it really doesnt sound good going into an amp as it is not really meant for that.

I am really attracted by the iridium, I've always been. But then I always do the same thought. You are a guitarist, you own at least one guitar and it's very likely you own at least one guitar amp. Why should I buy this pedal? To listen my guitar through some monitor speakers at home? It is nice to record your guitar going direct to the audio interface but... for that price, is it worth it? Another reason is to avoid carrying your guitar amp around if you play gigs. But if it's an important gig do you really want to leave your guitar amp at home? 😅
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 10 месяцев назад
Haha it's a dilemma for sure. If you can rent one or borrow one to try I think it'd be worth it to at least quell your curiosity! It's a great pedal but if it isn't solving a problem for you then it's not worth it imo.

@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 2 года назад
I have not noticed hum but hum usually depends on your pickups, gain, and how clean your power is. Here is what Strymon recommends. “Make sure to use headphones with an impedance between 25 to 70 ohms and with sensitivity as close to 100dB/mW as you can get for best performance with Iridium’s headphone output. The higher the impedance of your headphones, the lower the output volume of Iridium’s headphone output will be.”

where should I put time based effect with iridium? Before or after?
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 2 года назад
The best way to use it would be to disable the IR in the Iridium and then have the time based effect after iridium and then have that go out to an IR loader like an mbox, blubox, or IR software on your computer. The cheat way is to put it in front and put your iridium on super clean with no gain. You could in theory put the delays after the iridium with the IRs engaged but room would have to be at zero. I would say experiment and see which one you like the best!

Which amp setting are you using? For the chime (vox) setting it definitely has super high freq that I roll off by increasing the mids. When using the punch (Marshall) setting I don’t experience that, in fact I roll the bass down to 9 o clock and bump mids and treble. What kind of guitar and pickups are you using?
@mrsimulator9844
@mrsimulator9844 2 года назад
@@SuperdangerStudios Thanks for your response. I experience more so on the Chime and Punch setting. The two guitars I use most through it are my American Pro Tele and my PRS 594…… nothing crazy in regard to high gain pickups as they are both stock. I reached out to Strymon who told me it’s normal. When I crank up the gain on either of those settings, it’s far from a tight drive tone it just gets fuzzy. I have tried the Mesa IR’s from York and David Hislop. I really like them compared to the stock. A drive pedal seems to rid the problem as I don’t need to crank the gain past 12 as the pedal provides the crunch. I would think though the pedal should breakup/gain consistent throughout its control without getting fuzzy.

You can totally use this live with a power amp and a 2 x 10. A fryette power station or Seymour Duncan power pedal will take the Iridium to the 2 x 10 no problem. It will take some tinkering with the tone controls on both the iridium and power amp to get the right sound though.

How can we tell how much headroom a device like this has compared to regular amps where we can look at the wattage?
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 2 года назад
Hi JP. Thanks for the question. When you say headroom do you mean perceived loudness? Since this is a amp modeler the 'loudness' comes from your PA if you are playing live, or your preamp to your computer when recording. This is not an actual amp so there is no power amp stage to drive a passive speaker. If you mean 'headroom' as in how much you can push the gain before the amp goes into overdrive I would say not much. It goes into slightly dirty territory once you get past 12 o clock on the gain knob. Hope this helps. If not, let me know what you are looking to solve. Cheers!

@@SuperdangerStudios forget PAs and computer preamps, if I'm using this as a standalone DI into headphones at what point can I add overdrive before it sounds like it would be clipping. I know this probably won't clip the same way as an amp but I stead it would probably sound mushy or murky like when I see some people dialing metal settings with an overdrive and EQ on the marshall setting.

So I’m a worship guitar player live it’s mostly it other than Acoustic Live gigging… So I do use it on Sunday morning and I do put a boost in front of it and I use a good Radial direct box. Because of the boost pedal and the radial, I probably have as much money invested as if I would’ve got a stomp… No tweaking though… I did get a Midi Mouse, Stroman wants to nail it this should be more like a all in one multi effects pedal so you can save some presets, you can step through the preset switches but you have no clue where you are it’s a stupid design
