On the set of James Cameron's Titanic the ship itself wasn't the only thing to go down. During filming in 1996 almost the entire cast and crew including its director and some of its stars came down with a severe case of food poisoning. OR WAS IT? Further investigation indicated that perhaps something even more sinister was at play with the potential of a direct and targeted attack at Jim Cameron himself. This is that story. Apparently the worst injury sustained during the poisoning was a Key grip that fell over while high and ended up with part of a boom mic in his leg . In extreme pain , the poor guy was reduced to limping around the set trying to attract someones attention by crying out " Rod ,Knee . ROD , KNEE " over and over .

Fun fact: after the clam chowder was spiked on set, It turned blue and hardened. When the cast and crew went to get their food they noticed that the clam chowder had gone firm, so they had to physically stick their spoons into the Blue mixture to “harvest” out the clams. This gave the film the working title of “clam chowder”

I work in the film industry in Halifax, Nova Scotia and I can confirm this incident is still talked about to this day. I've even chatted with people that worked on the set, crazy shit! Also I've been a big fan of the channel for a long time and hearing you say "Dartmouth" is something I never knew I needed.

As someone who is wildly allergic to seafood/fish, and thus someone who wouldn't have touched the mystery chowder, I would have loved to have been on set and just watching everyone lose their damn minds. I have nothing but the utmost sympathy for everyone on staff at that hospital that night, it must've been an absolute nightmare dealing with all those people.

To a certain degree it's the track records, where by the time of Titanic Cameron was likely already considered a genius auteur. So they let him get away with everything. Meanwhile Wilde doesn't have that level of prestige. But very likely it's mostly good old misogyny. When a woman has a public disagreement she's "unhinged" and "difficult to work with," but when a dude literally puts his workers/colleagues in physical, emotional, and mental danger he's "passionate," and "that's just his method."

Considering the drug used was PCP, is there any chance the person who spiked the chowder was actually trying to make everyone have a good time but didn't realize how bad it would affect them? That was one of the main theories. That it was attempted as a "fun" thing but the person doing it was irresponsible and short-sighted. However, it's hard to believe that was the case, since the dish was being served to people as young as 8 and as old as 87. Seems like whoever did it knew there was a potential to cause major harm. Revenge still seems like the best motivation, imo.

I’ve read about this incident before and had to write a research paper about it in my organic chemistry class with a team of my peers. We studied the effects of the cultures for a whole semester on red blood cells with no results. Until one day, my lab partner from Atlanta discovered that the most effective results came from blue blood cells. To this day that collected reaction is still listed in text books as “Blue Harvest”

Actually, this sometimes happens when clams are improperly collected. They have a sac of poisonous dye, much like an octopus, and if you don't remove it, something something blue harvest

I had a similar experience on a location shoot. The "craft service" guy was pretty frank about his institutional experience in cooking. For being a literal prison chef, everything he made got us through our 14-16 hour days of filming. One night, after we ran very late and had an early morning call for sunrise B-roll, Crafty surprised us with ice cream sundaes. He asked everybody individually if they wanted "regular chocolate" or "special chocolate". I'd guess the response was 80% "special". I stayed up to shoot the 6:00 B-roll and then gaffed for another 14 hours. Moral of the story, kids, is don't do drugs (unless you have 18 hours of work to do in the next 24 and then do as many as you can)! But, yeah... Don't do drugs!!

Fun Fact: the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries of The North Atlantic held an inquiry into the incident and deducted that it was basically a cover up due to the large collection of rare coloured lobsters used in the chowder. The chance of one of these lobsters is about 1 in 2 million, but a large haul had been caught in the season prior, so to not worry the general public they gave them all to the cast and crew of the hit 1977 film Star Wars, hence the working title 'Blue Harvest'.
