What's amazing is that while he was a slave he still was one of the best influential storytellers of all time. I truly admire the man.

A fascinating story well told. What we at Æsop's Teachings find particularly interesting is the idea that the fables might originate from ancient Mesopotamia or even before, thus spanning many millenia of oral tradition.

Long after the original aesop passed, more tales were told. Only written in greek and latin hundreds of years later. A period of around 500 years collects the bulk of these works. Possibly three or four authors, scribes, monks could have attributed to the collating of the main corpus. Marcus Manilius, who wrote the Astronomica, amongst other astrological, mathmatical and poetic works. Was also a monk who could translate greek, latin. He has been thought to be the last modern Aesop. He lived around the first century.

My last name is actually Aesop..I learnt most of the stories of him but I never knew that Aesop means Ethiop that is something I learnt..thank you so much about the video

Thats because Aesop doesn't mean Ethiop. The only source for this is, as the video described, a Byzantine guy that lived over 1200 years after Aesop died. Before that, every description of him details him as straight up ugly and that he was constantly made fun of for it. But yeah there is no description of him being black. I'm not saying that he was not, but saying that his name means Ethiop is straight up not true. Source : I am Greek and a historian.

@Rustyfork I agree. But I still wonder, was "Aesop's last fable" what really happened with his death? It's mentioned here that he was thrown over a cliff, and that he called their city trash, but did the Delphians actually throw him over because he was irritating them with countless fables? "Aesop's last fable" didn't have him calling their city trash

@@alvexok5523 Good catch. A whole slew of anecdotes follows a person's last moments, some are erroneous. Some are not. THis might have been a way to put some spice into Aesop's life, similar to Diogenes (the "Plato's man" anecdote is a false one, for example)

I have heard AEsop's fables handed down by mouth for generations and always reflected on their wisdom. By good luck I found a copy of them at the store today and read them like gospel. It amazes me (and it would my whole family) that AEsop was a brother and no one I know knew. That endears him more considering.

It's not really any more relevant to me than what curiosity would warrant, but do we know if he was black, or was he called Aesop because of his resemblance to an "Ethiop"? I recall more such famous people being named after a stereotype even though they are not originally from the associated region. I mean in my country we have nicknames like "Dutch" or "Turk" colloquially, especially in villages (I come from a village so I heard this a lot)

Dude Ethiop was a greek word to begin with. It wasn't a greek corruption. Also Aesop and Ethiop are so far from being similar words. Also how he look like or where he was from is unknown so it's a bit presumptuous to present information like this as facts. This video has misinformation.
