desipanjaban - the respect I have seen for Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lehdne Punjab in incredible , it is almost reverence . He was the only son of the soil who ruled Punjab in its history otherwise Punjab was ruled by invaders . There was no death penalty during his regime , no slaughtering of cows and complete religious freedom which is unprecedented even now .

I have met ordinary Lahoris who used to name Maharaja Ranjit Singh with gr8 respect. They always used title “ Maharaja” with the original name which shows their respect for gr8 Maharaja Ranjit Singh. We visited the haveli in Gujranwala where Maharaja was born and the people there, were very proudly referring “Maharaja Ranjit Singh” as one of them who, once ruled the whole Punjab, Kashmir, Sindh till Jamrud. It will be very much wrong to say Pakistani Punjabi doesn’t own Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Starting from the Mahajanpadas, then it was ruled by native kingdoms, then it was ruled by kings from other parts of India and some foreign origin Indianised kings, like the Mauryan empire, then the Indo Greeks, Indo Scythians, Kushans, Guptas. Then the rule passed to the Vardhans who were native to Punjab. Then the Taanks who were also native. Read some history.
