He wasn’t like the rest of the aspiring Marines who arrived at Parris Island in 1942. Paul Douglas had some miles on him. At 50, Douglas wore glasses, was wrinkled in the face, and had gray hair. He was more than twice as old as nearly all his fellow recruits; in some cases he was nearly three times as old. He was almost certainly one of the few people on the entire island born in the 19th century - 1892, to be exact.

I wish we could again find people like Douglas to run and get elected to the Congress.

My grandfather was there with the 7th at Peleilu. He was wounded and nearly died there. He was a 16 year old marine when he earned his Purple Heart and bronze star there. His name was Thomas Crawford and I was lucky to be raised by him!

Doesn’t seem quite right for an officer to leave the front lines to fetch ammo, ya know? There must be more to that story. Seems peculiar, too, to take in a college professor of economics as a private and bump him up to a Marine Captain of Infantry! The guy might have had huge balls of brass, but he probably would have better served in the War Dept. or the Treasury Dept. to support the war effort. Idk, but it just makes me question the whole back story.
