In 2013, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands stepped down and handed the throne to her son, Willem Alexander. In 2022 Queen Elizabeth II of the UK died at the age of 96 and her son, Charles III inherited the throne. And on January 14th, 2024, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated in favor of her son, Frederik X. In just over 10 years, the world has gone from three accomplished, popular and long reigning Queens Regnant to zero. That’s right, there are no female monarchs anywhere in the world. The future may be female, but not in the archaic system of hereditary monarchy. However there are several female heirs waiting in succession lines to be the next great Queen regnant. Let’s take a look at which monarchies even allow women to occupy their thrones, and count down from those which will have to wait a few generations before getting a female sovereign, to those which are just one heartbeat, or abdication away from welcoming the World’s next Queen Regnant.
11. Luxembourg - No women in direct succession
10. Bhutan - Sonam Yangdento, 3rd in line, cadet
9. Tonga - Princess Halaevalu, Princess Nanasipau’u and Princess Salote, all cadet
8. The United Kingdom & Commonwealth Realms - Princess Charlotte, 3rd in line, cadet
7. Monaco - Princess Gabriella, 2nd in line, cadet
6. Denmark Princess Isabella, 2nd in line, cadet
5. Norway - Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 2nd in line, direct succession
4. Spain - Leonor, Princess of Asturias, heir to the throne
3. The Netherlands - Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange, heir to the throne
2. Belgium - Princess Elisabeth, heir to the throne
1. Sweden - Crown Princess Victoria, heir to the throne, Princess Estelle, 2nd in line, direct succession
Wild Cards:
Andorra - Could have elected Princess any time, next election 2027
Thailand - King Rama X will name heir, Princess Bajrakitiyabha is a contender

I mean its not too late to proclaim aiko heiress cause parliament can still change the succession laws (which sadly their was plans of making made her become heiress when she was toddler but then her male cousin was born and it got scrapped out 🙄) there was a survey back in 2021 if im not mistaken that 80% of japanese approve of her becoming an heir and debates of changing the succession laws but idk anything is still possible. Cause hello japanese male heirs are disappearing so 🤷‍♂️ . I mean her grandfather,the former emperor, abdicated the throne and broke the law instead of serving for life. Anything can still happen , they just need to change succession laws before girl gets married (and dethroned of royal titles ☠️). And even if she doesn’t become one I really hope her cousin can break the law soon cause man get pressuring to bear a son is just 😑 .

As a fan of your channel from Thailand, I’m so delighted to hear this story here. Furthermore, I’d like to give you more information about Thai royal family’s line of succession. - According to the 1923 act of succession, which was legislated by King Rama VI and is still active today, female royals were prohibited to take the throne. The reason is that it was unlikely to have a queen regnant at that time. But time flies, and the constitution has the highest rank of law. We may see a woman to wear the crown in the future. This act also determines other interesting things, for example a male royal who marries a foreign woman must be excluded from the succession. It will be affected to his future descendants. Or a female royal must resign from the royal family and loses all of royal titles, if she wants to marry a man with lower rank. - The King’s younger sister, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (Wikipedia calls her Princess Royal), gets more popular than her brother, because the people think that she lives a very simple life, follows her father’s footsteps and is the hardest working royal. So she may be a good choice to become queen, if the king dies or abdicates. - Vacharaeson’s visit to Thailand in almost 30 years surprised us all and usually stays in spotlight. It is believed that he still never met his father and sister. - In Thai history, we have one abdication. King Rama VII abdicated in 1934, only two years after the Siamese Revolution. He remained in the UK until his death in 1941.

I am Swedish and I believe that King Carl XVI Gustaf will continue for at least ten more years. Partly because no Bernadotte Regent has abdicated (as Lindsey said) but also because he is healthy, strong and he really loves his job. But above all because he and the queen know how tough it is to be king and queen while having small children. (After all, all other modern-day regents have been crown princes/princesses for so long that their children have at least reached their teenage years before becoming regents) Victoria and her siblings have also publicly mentioned that they found it difficult that their parents were so busy and often absent when they where kids.

The Bhutanese rule about abdication was news to me. Thank you, I like learning something new. As for King Harald V of Norway, he has sadly been a lot in and out of hospital recently (including right now) but seems to be in great spirits, and Crown Prince Haakon seamlessly steps in as regent whenever needed as the Norwegian rules on a temporary regency are very relaxed (all you need is basically a doctor’s note).

The UK doesn't have a tradition of honourable abdication because the Commonwealth intentionally made it very difficult for a sovereign to abdicate after Edward VIII's abdication. To abdicate, the sovereign must obtain the permission/consent of the Parliaments of all eight of the fifteen Commonwealth realms who have the right to chime in, the legislatures of all the Australian states, and the legislatures of all the Canadian provinces. No one seems to understand this. It's the law. It isn't optional, and they can't get around it unless they change the law. An heir cannot abdicate. They can however make themselves unqualified for the throne by converting to Roman Catholicism.
@mehere8299
@mehere8299 3 месяца назад
And I should add that obtaining the consent means putting a bill through every one of these parliaments and legislatures, which in itself would likely take months if not years. The recent changes to the succession didn’t have to clear the Canadian provincial legislatures, and still it took *four years* for the bills allowing them to pass everywhere.
@annbsirius1703
@annbsirius1703 3 месяца назад
I feel that should Charles decide to abdicate down the road he would get permission even if took a bit of time and trouble. He's already past the age of retirement, he's not the icon his mother was after 70 years on the throne and William is very popular.
@DylanSargesson
@DylanSargesson Месяц назад
Realistically if the King wanted to abdicate they'd move the legislation through the Parliaments much quicker. Especially depending on what the reasons were no Parliament/Government would want to be the one holding it up for everybody else. Of course when Edward VIII abdicated the Statue of Westminster (which recognised the monarchies of the Dominions, now Commonwealth Realms, to be seperate legally) had already been instituted, and the Canadian and South African Parliaments had to pass their own Acts to make it happen. Ireland also took the opportunity to change their laws and moved towards abolishing the Monarchy altogether, which I could see some modern countries doing too.
@miaomiaochan
@miaomiaochan Месяц назад
And so many people were hoping King Charles would cede the throne to William. It doesn't work that way, guys.
@mazmellem2773
@mazmellem2773 Месяц назад
When Edward VIII abdicated, it helped that it was before his coronation. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been possible, but it would have been harder for him to abdicate after he'd been anointed King.

Here is to hoping that Leonor marries a member of the Capetian dynasty so that the House of Bourbons does not lose the throne of Spain after her time. Unlike other royal houses like Bernadotte or Windsor (where house membership go hand-in-hand with the succession to the throne), Spain is different because the House of Bourbon is part of the larger Capetian dynasty and is thus governed by the dynasty’s rules where house membership is limited to male-line descendants only.

The Monarchies of Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands were once all part of the Duchy of Burgundy. Burgundy knew the possibility of female succession and had it in happen in 1477, when Mary took over from Charles the Bold. And, last not least, but probably more important with regard to that: as long as the House of Hapsburg ruled in Burgundy (later on known as Spanish/Austrian Netherlands), it was usually the task of either the eldest sister or daughter of the current Hapsburg ruler (either in Spain or Austria) to be Governor his or her stead. So, those countries have a long tradition of female Rule.

The last statement about The Princess’s health was issued on January 8, 2023. There’re rumors that her brain is completely dead and she can still be alive because of medical devices. Many people believe that she’s already gone, but her father, who actually believes in fate and fortune, is not ready to let her go and finding an appropriate day to announce her death. As a Thai, I think Princess Sirivannavari has a lack of popularity and no interest in political issues. Do not overlook Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the king’s younger sister, because she’s incredibly popular among royalists!

@@doradoraemon4087That’s not possible with the current constitution of Thailand. The constitution said The King may choose any of his *son or daughter* as heir to the throne. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is the king’s *sister* and therefore it would be against the constitution to designated her as heir to the throne. Even if the king did not designated an heir when his reign had ended, the government must still only invite one of his son or daughter to take the throne. The only possible scenario is if his reign ended and there’s no surviving son or daughter… then the throne will pass to his next eldest sibling, in this case that would be Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn but this scenario is highly unlikely as the King still has many sons and daughters…

Norway had a Queen-Regnant, Margaret I, who was also Queen of Denmark and Sweden under the Kalmar Union. Norway recognises these monarchs, so Ingrid Alexandra will in fact be Norway's second Queen-Regnant. However she will be the first one since the Crown was separated from those of Sweden and Denmark and has stood alone.

As soon as I saw the title of the video, I was like “It’s gotta be Norway.” I forgot about Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium (although it’s no guarantee that the Netherlands’ king will abdicate just because his three most immediate predecessors did)

Great video! Only a couple of corrections: Crown Princess Victoria got married in 2010, not 2011. And Princess Ingrid Alexandra is 20, not 19. She became 20 January the 21st.

Bravo on another interesting look at royals across Europe. I have a video request: Through the channel UsefulCharts I learned about several matrilineal dynasties amongst royal history in Europe. I checked, and noticed that not only were Isabella I of Castile and Manuel I of Portugal were matrilineal cousins, but there was more inbreeding in the Iberian Peninsula than I'd previously known of. Would a video on that history, which adds to the Habsburg inbreeding problems mentioned in previous videos, be a possibility?

Tonga had a queen regnant for many years. Salote was queen when Elizabeth II came to the throne and visited London for the coronation. She was 6'2" and taller than the security she had. She passed in the mid 60's and I recall the National Geographic article about her son becoming king. Tonga is the only Christian nation that still has an actual coronation, not an inauguration or something like it.

Prince Albert II has another daughter from a woman in Brazil. The girl's name is Ashely and she's around 18 years old right now. 2 years ago the girl and her Brazilian mother appeared in a Brazilian news program. Albert is trying to hide another kid he had out of wedlock. I don't understand how this haven't been picked up by the press yet. They must be working really hard to keep mother and daughter quiet.

I mean uk may have a queen if george bears a daughter as the first born when the time comes he is an adult. Or if he is married but without an heir and dies then yeah charlotte may claim the throne. (but lets not think of that too early ) But srsly it doesn’t matter if he bears a son as long as his offspring can be educated to be a good monarch thats all that matters

Interesting video. Just FYI: Queen Emma was wife to William III of the Netherlands, and she served as regent for her daughter Queen Wilhelmina from 1890 until 1898. She wasn't "technically" Queen Regnant but she did rule until her daughter Wilhemina reached her majority. As an aside, I'm of Dutch descent and both my maternal grandmother and my mom were named after Queen Wilhelmina.

My first thought at the title was Princess Victoria from Sweden as she's the oldest of the heir apparent princesses. Earlier,, I thought it odd that Sweden's king took away his already born son's position by making the change of succession retroactive (instead of for future heirs like England did). But apparently he didn't want to but the country made him? It's odd that Swedish people insisted the change of succession had to be retroactive and not just for future born heirs?
