I'm totally stunned the Oliviers don't separate Director of a play vs. musical! 😲

Sunset is likely gonna sweep most of the awards but Mincemeat is gonna win Best Musical! Rooting for Cedric Neal for Supporting Actor in a Musical

@ignite_2738 Месяц назад
I would also say that similarly to Cedric Neal and Jak Malone, Jack Wolfe has the standout number in Next To Normal with 'I'm Alive'. It is interesting to me how as supporting actors they've all ended up with the most talked about songs over the leads. While everyone in that category would be a deserving winner, I'm with Aeron and I think/hope it's going to go to Wolfe. Personally I think his vocals alone are enough of an argument for a West End cast recording of N2N (which I'm still holding out hope for despite that weird countdown to the rebranding reveal.)

I saw Charlie stamp twice in crazy for you and he was amazing. He definitely deserves an award after playing such an active role in crazy for you. ❤❤

I'm still gobsmacked that Daniel Rigby wasn't nominated for Accidental Death! It was one of the best performances I've ever seen and one that feels deserving considering the entire category is 'celebrity' actors!

Mark Gatiss’s performance was incredible. It was so nuanced. I felt privileged to have seen it. We spent almost the whole interval talking to strangers about how amazing he was. I will be one of those people harping back to it, in years to come! With or without an award, I think he is the winner, this season.

Im rooting for Charlie Stemp so much. He’s such a triple threat. I hope it’s his time to shine, after 2 nominations 🤞🏻 And also, would be nice for Crazy For You to win an Oliver, after not being nominated for best revival (still chocked about this btw)

Very sad I won't be attending the Oliviers this year! Excited to hear the results and agree with many of your takes. I really am fairly confident in Operation Mincemeat for Best Musical after the nominations with David and Zoe also getting into acting (alongside the more expected noms for Natasha and Jak) showed even more love the show than I was expecting. But I am biased as I really love it! Really happy though as all 8 musicals/musicals revivals were really fantastic and deserving of their reocgnition here. Happy that I've seen all the musical performances this year as well - it's been such an incredible year for London theatre!

I just had to email the Guardian to correct its article stating [REDACTED] won New Musical in a “hyper-competitive field” against Guys and Dolls, Groundhog Day and Hadestown 🙄 Musicals are already maligned at the Oliviers, but how hard is it for reporters to not conflate new and revival musicals?

After seeing guys & dolls on Tuesday night it was amazing it deserves all the awards it gets so does operation mincemeat, but can see sunset sweeping everything
@danjon8799
@danjon8799 Месяц назад
See prior to this I thought the musical that would take the sweep would be Sunset but I feel it might not be the case anymore. But my reason is I think back to Cabaret. Obviously we all know there were some amazing shows but Cabaret did change the way we see musicals and plays now with many shows trying to replicate the immersive aspect of a show (I think back to recently having been to see the Crucible where there were moments where they turned the lights of the theatre on during the play and I think that only happened because of the likes of Oklahoma and Cabaret daring to do this immersive theatre) and whilst Guys and Dolls is very good, the problem is the Bridge has done many immersive/promenade productions before where they have immersive elements and my only question is will the show be recognised for changing things up or will it just be seen as trying to replicate the success of Cabaret and less so? Whereas with Sunset they brought back a musical that was so radically different and I think it's been proven with the success of video on stage that now the Oliviers are now changing their categories to make Sunset a worthy nomination.

Rooting for Sunset Boulevard and Mincemeat musical wise (would love Next to Normal to win, but a very limited run at the Donmar may not play in its favour). My bet is on Eleanor Worthington-Cox, her character has such much more depth compared with the others in the same category and while I loved Amy Trigg, I didn't feel the same level as attachment to her character.

Sunset will be the big winner, Dear England will score and I hope Gina McKee wins but I'm inclined for a posthumous winner. Kudos to Aeron if he had anything to do with SIX at Buckingham Palace House of Holbein. Also Strange Loop is my choice.

I think what I am learning is that I really ought to go and see Stranger Things... (though no matter how impressive it is, I truly can't imagine how it could blow me away any more than Sunset Boulevard did!)

I sincerely hope you’re wrong about Entertainment - Accidental Death of an Anarchist deserves the win. It’s not just a great play, it’s a new English language adaptation that drastically reframes the story to modern day satire

If I'm understanding these categories correctly, there are separate awards for comedy (Entertainment or Comedy) & dramatic (Best New Play) plays and musicals (Best New Musical)? Why is 'Old Friends' in the first category, rather than in Best New Musical? Is it because it's a revue, rather than a book musical?
@danielrobinson7350
@danielrobinson7350 Месяц назад
Yes. It’s not a new musical. The Entertainment or Comedy category is a sort of catch-all for either things that don’t quite fit in any other category, or like Stranger Things realise they stand a better chance of winning this than Best New Play, so put themselves forward for this.

Searching for your review of Appropriate. Am I missing something? I am dying to know your thoughts! If anyone caught a moment, when Mickey expressed his thoughts about the show, please let me know which video that was in! I assume a whole video dedicated to reviewing the show is not happening. I definitely had strong opinions myself and sadly not the greatest lol am I alone here?

This might just me not liking most of Webber's material but I don't think Sunset Boulevard should win a single award. Operation Mincemeat should trump it in every category and also Hadestown should be in new musical, I know it was at the National but I don't feel like the National is West end.

At least if Jamie Lloyd doesn't win for sunset blvd. this year he'll definitely win next year for Romeo and Juliet
@emhu2594
@emhu2594 Месяц назад
Sunset blvd should win everything. Rachel tucker should be eligible. Also, people taking over roles should also be eligible. When so many great performances are excluded, I'm not sure the Oliviers mean anything at all, except hey this is new. Guys and dolls needed a better update than just making it "immersive." The sexism and shallow stereotypes are all left in there for some reason.
@danielrobinson7350
@danielrobinson7350 Месяц назад
Can think of a few problems with alternates and takeovers being eligible: 1) Would enough Olivier judges see all of the potential nominees? 2) Would it just be people in shows that are in their first year, or would the 100th person to play Jean Valjean or Elphaba be eligible? Could see it leading to more dominance by the big shows with powerful producers than already is the case, as smaller shows are less likely to have alternates or takeovers.

I really hope that Rooney v Vardy doesn’t win anything. It really felt like middle class people mocking working class people If Amy Trigg doesn’t win I will be livid. I think she’s a great actress, she’s also a really great writer, not relevant to this award but I just like to point out how amazing she is. Btw, have you considered doing a video on the National Theatre plays/musical that will be available on streaming next month? I know Little Big Things is among them.
