Wow...lots of condescending and mansplaining in the comments here. I wonder if these guys would type the same stuff to a male trainer. This is a good video and one of the many different techniques to train whoa. Every dog is different. That's a fact.
Depends on the dog! There are times/training that require daily work, other times dogs may need days off in between to figure things out. On average, and for the average dog, I train 5 days a week:)
never release the dog off whoa by calling the dog to you , always go to the dog to release the dog and say ok or tap the side of the dog ... 101 dog training !!!!! this girl is just another RU-vidR !!!!! LOL.
Jodi, you don't need to have a word for caution and a separate word to stop the dog. You either want the dog to stop, or....??? You are too wordy in your training in general. Where are the birds in this process? If you are teaching whoop or whoa as an obedience command, it will have no place on birds regardless of what you might think. If you don't believe me, watch the predominant videos here-in where dogs are ALREADY on point before their owner says anything (clue!), and then watch what unravels as they come in yacking, "whoa....whooooa....WHOA!!". Hmm...does "whoa" mean chase?!?!? Sure seems that way. Properly bred pointing dogs know what you present to them. If you show them birds and allow them to chase for a bit and they don't get a bird, they self-learn. If you teach them to stand still and as a result you provide them with a bird to retrieve, they self-learn (with your help), exactly that. It doesn't get ANY more complicated than that. I NEVER "whoa" my setter or pointer. They are completely steady to wing and shot and retrieve to hand. They also handle flawlessly. I don't own a whistle and I don't hack my dogs. You won't need your shotgun handling dogs on wild birds whistling and hacking. It's not a challenge for the dogs. It IS a challenge - even in this day and age - for people.
Super cool that your dogs were able to pick that stuff up on their own. I train professionally, and have a short time limit to build someone a good enough foundation with their pup that they can build on from there. I don’t start holding the dog on their birds and tell them whoa at the same time, there’s no check cord involved after they know whoa. I put the bird in front of the dog, whoa the dog, let them chase/retrieve as a reward after they’ve done well and then move forward from there. I can definitely appreciate that your dogs have had the natural ability to do these things with training that way, but not every dog is the same. Thanks for the comment!
Video should be taken down....... sorry I'm just being honest, very poor training example here for such a simple thing like training a dog to whoa. I see your passion for dog training and good intention but WHOA is really a simple thing to teach a dog with a tool as simple as a "lead" walking up on birds or launcher, while communicating command, even while we use heel work and incorporating the whoa ensuring they stay in standing position. It really is that simple!
Phil B., this is how you know someone has very little knowledge of dog training. They think their way is the only ways Clearly this girl is showing us “a way” of doing it. Obviously there are other ways of doing the task.
No, its not that easy depending on the type of dog, their energy level, and at what age you became the owner. Also, there are many, many ways to teach the whoa command. I've had 5 pointers and now 1 Spaniel and they were all trained a little different for the whoa command.
There are a lot of dogs out there that would not do well with walking them up to a bird or launcher and telling them whoa. What if the dog wasn’t excited enough about birds yet or didn’t have the drive to handle the obedience and the birds at the same time? Training a dog is a lot like raising a child. Multiple ways, multiple subjects lol. It’s adaptive for sure. This is what I have done for the majority of dogs for the last 10 years. The 10 years before that I did it differently. It’s easy, away from birds, and can be done in a few days. It’s also a great way to see where the dog is psychologically, maybe that’s one reason I do it too. I do agree with you though that some dogs can definitely do what you’re talking about with no issues!

A whoa post had been used to train more dogs than any other, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I still use it as well as incorporating other methods. I'd love to hear how it doesn't work?
I'd put the half hitch under their belly rather than on their back for pointers as u dont want them to sit. The way you put it on is what I'd use for labs. I wouldn't talk period during the training. Saying whoa or whatever wont work when your dog is 80 yards away on point and creeping. You should go to a Rick Smith seminar.
