Cost per serving is what really matters here. As long as that number stays about $4 it's worth the upfront cost. That said, it wasn't too long ago that number would be halved. The problem is most people have the shelf stable stuff already in their kitchens IE oils, salts, dried herbs, etc. which is where the bulk of the costs come from. Generally you'd pick up the meat, cheeses, wine, pasta, and toms/sauce. You're literally over thinking this.

As a German, these groceries prices are really shocking to me. Normal grocery stores cost way less even than the 99ct store here and even adjusted for currencies. We also had a lot of inflation in grocery prices lately, but we are generally way cheaper with our groceries than all our neighbouring countries.

But so much of what they bought they only used a fraction of but listed the full price of purchasing it. Like 1 egg from the $5 dozen. The wine, spices, breadcrumbs, olive oil, etc., all had most of the full package left over. It would have been good if they ultimately fractioned out the price for each full recipe at the end.
