I think Michael it has got to the point that artisan shaving soap making in the new world is now *at least* as good soap making as (centuries-old) traditional soap making from the likes of France and Italy. Yes, you can go to, say, southern France where there is still a localised cottage-industry soap making, and one is bound to be charmed by the artisanry about it. But what keeps coming out of the States and Canada can give the Europeans a run for their money, easily. A Renaissance of traditional wet shaving, we're living through perhaps. Lovely, as ever, Michael to have your upload on a dreary, freezing Sunday evening in ancient (unhealthily, ruinously Brexit-driven) Albion. Tara! :)
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 4 года назад
Ah, ancient Albion, how we miss you! It is kind of amazing just how far they are taking "soap", which as you say already has hit a high bar for those more traditional French and Italian soaps. Martin de Candre - you wonder what they think when they use a soap like this Wholly Kaw soap? Are they impressed or dismayed or dismissive, or all three (grin)??

1st Nice shave Michael💈💈 Mild not wild. Look at that marvelous lather bowl work it's magic and not even a mention🤔 Wholly Kaw certainly is top shelf. So many soaps/creams, so little time😢 Lol, some people have a tendency to over-shave using such a mild razor😉 Another informative video, thanks. Enjoy!

The lather bowl is MAGIC, and we all know it. Mild razors are a bit of a trap, it's easy to feel like you need to compensate for the feel, but resist the urge and let the razor do its work. Excellent results as you could see.

Nice shave and review, thank you! As someone already mentioned, too many soaps, not enough time and money... I saw that brush in some of your previous videos, very simple but nice wooden handle... was it a one-off, or is it available for purchase? I love the badger/ boar mixed knots, Semogue Owners Club Mixed Badger and Boar (with the cherry wood handle), which is a 50/50 mix, is my favourite brush. And it’s incredibly cheap compared to other brushes, and considering the quality...

Great shave Michael. It's a bit weird that you did not get a really good shave with the Gillette Silver Blue blade. It must have been a bad blade which is rare because I find them to be very consistant. I tried Wholly Kaw back in the day and I really enjoyed their now discontinued frozen cranberry scented soap which was awesome.

@@mfreedberg yeah they got rid of it just before they changed their soap base. An old friend of mine back in the day had sent it to me. I had wanted to try KShave Worx's "Frosen" which was a cranberry and rose scented soap which they have long since discontinued.

I tried not to over shave in the last shave. The result was acceptable but some areas on the neck had some uncut stubble and I didn't like it, even I did 3 full passes I could do another pass, but I left it there. Now, when I get the Siero I will make 5 passes to see how far this soap can go.

In these Inflationary Times. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Use any hard Soaps out there? To fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like" tallow (Mitchells' Wool Fat or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them?) You can mix and match your old Soaps? Cut up the soap on a paper plate, pour your soap chunks with the shavings from the Paper Plate into a Mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, and microwave your soap. For about a minute or so? Place a paper plate under your mug in case it bubbles out of your cup? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. It saves me time and Money. Wheelchair Larry Happy New Year. Your Mileage may vary?

@toddpedlar5431

Yeah, it looks wonderful, as one might expect. But I agree with you - this is way above my price point. I have to wonder if some of these artisans might make more profit knocking the price down to the $20-25 ballpark where MANY more guys might be willing to pull the trigger. I'm sure they've done the financial analysis, though, and maybe $30 is the right place... but there's no chance I'm buying it at that price.
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus 4 года назад
@@toddpedlar5431 Wholly Kaw's unscented 'Bare Siero' is a little more affordable at $24.99. Some might consider one of Grooming Department's soaps (with the Fortis base) a steal at $15, though it might be interpreted as a teaser to get you to pull the trigger on their top-line soap bases. I just wish more vendors would offer simpler scents (like pure lemon, lavender, sandalwood, unscented or something else) as an option with these improved bases.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 4 года назад
Pricing is getting to be a real issue for these top tier soaps, but I am not sure what they can do about the pricing if the entire ingredient list is premium top to bottom :-) this is one soap I would use with care to make it last for that money -- but it does also offer a superior shave.

With soapers using Donkey Milk, Water Buffalo Milk, Camel milk, etc where is this milk obtained and how does each contribute to the quality of the soap as opposed to whole milk, chocolate milk, soy milk, almond milk, etc. Is this just marketing or do these milks improve the base. Serious question, but really, Water Buffalo Milk!
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 4 года назад
Donkey milk has been used for ages for its skin benefits, and this may surprise you, but we have a large and very productive local bison herd (meat mostly, but there is also milk to be had). The milks offer a particular collection of fats that just work really well as skin conditioners, and you will not get those fats in those other milks :-) I always ask as a joke when we will see a moose milk soap, but the fact is...you might.

Someone wrote somewhere that this soap gave 21 shaves (head & face). Tell me this isn't true, or I will load for *5 seconds* from now on.
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus 4 года назад
I don't load from any soap container. I usually scrape out a pea-sized amount of soap and spread it through the bottom of an IMUSA salsa bowl, then build lather from there (using synthetic brushes). Extracting lather from the knot and rebuilding from that extracted lather (with additional water) is a key step in maximizing lather volume. At the early stages it looks woefully inadequate, but I almost always end up with more than enough lather for a shave. Also works with 6-8 flakes of triple milled soaps pressed into a lather bowl.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 4 года назад
I never load from the container either, and there are all kinds of ways to build that lather. Also, for a lot of people, they are just making TOO MUCH lather, which is fine -- but all you need is a slick layer, not a deep layer :-) How many flakes of the Dr Selby? 5 or 6 probably is plenty!!
