“Armor, from the light IFT to the medium AAT to the heavy ATTE‘s have been used in warfare for quite a long time. They can beat an evenly matched infantry unit quite easily by sheer fire power or maneuver, and heavy armor was great for defending. However, they were a mechanical and logistical headache sometime, since they need to have fuel and munitions, and typically had sensitive components that the walkers or tanks could not operate without such as repulsors or reactors. For the confederacy, they had countless armor templates, both autonomous and manned. The main focus on this end, versatility in design and function, was possible due to the many factories in the outer rim, which could produce many different units, even in a single factory. In a way, much of that war was about the military-industrial complex of the galaxy and who could make more infantry weapons, tanks and starcraft.” -CS/CT-8711-12 “Cheng”, former captain and scout of the 442nd siege battalion

I would also say that when thinking about the tactics these units approached, you have to remember who was commanding these armies. The GAR, lead by the Jedi, who were not the most tactically sound, who did not go to any imperial war colleges would have done much worse if given too many options. The CIS was lead by a cyborg and most Commanders were tactical and later super tactical command droids who could billions of calculations and could come up with the most efficient lineup of what they were given. That is another thing that the GAR did to be easier for the Jedi to command, they knew exactly what tools they would be given. Where if you were a CIS leader and received reinforcements, you possibly didn't fully know what you would get and had to make due. That would be fine for droid commanders, but not organics who couldn't come up with a whole new defense synergy.
@eddieram435
@eddieram435 2 года назад
Interesting point...If the GAR was fighting alone without the aid of the Jedi Order, they could had lost the war as the CIS outnumbered them and were tactically more advanced, also strategywise...The CIS had the advantage. In the legends, we know the CIS employed many races and organizations that were enemies of the Republic, thus adding entire races that inhabit a system to fight for them. The Republic was vastly outnumbered and had to become flexible in order to deal with both robotic and organic enemies in multiple fronts at the same time. The Clone Wars in the legends was probably one of the biggest conflicts the Galaxy has ever experience since the Hyperpace War and the Reformation of the Republic following their conflict with the Sith Lords of old.

Granted this is heavenly reliant on which jedi you have in command but the jedi war is actually being more tactically flexible expensive calculate vegetable especially when the Jedi general was skilled in Battle Meditation. As the ability allowed the jedi to wield an army as if it was just one piece and and while George would be immune to the morale draining effects about a meditation the organic clone troopers would still be fighting at peak morale and heightened senses which made them less likely to break clear the break and more likely to survive. Granted at the time there was only 2 maybe 3 jedi who actually skilled in that technique as I don't think K'khruk knew the ability at that point and Etain never received training for it even she showed a potential for it.

I would say you need to factor air superiority in the equation. War with any level of semblance to what we see in the real world will fallow this premise. If you have your armor corps in position but your enemy has dominated the skies, your tanks will be absolutely decimated regardless of tactics. So with that in mind you’d have to figure who had greater firepower in the air during each battle. When you have that at your advantage you’ll be able to steam roll your opponent before they can react. This was very common in the Second World War. Who ever has total control of the air space during a frontal assault/battle of attrition your fighters and bombers will determine who wins.

Actually, WW2 isn't the best example to use. Most WW2 aircraft struggled to deal with tanks and the amount of aircraft on tank kills was rather low. The morale effect was pretty big, but ww2 aircraft where not that good against tanks. They where however much better at attacking softer targets behind the lines, like supply trucks, field artillery and such. But it wouldn't be until the widespread deployment of air to ground missiles that aircraft would become good tank killers on their own. The Gulf war is a better example of Aircraft killing tanks.

War tactics are very complicated after all, even unexpected little events can be a massive wrench thrown to a carefully crafted tactic and plan, and even the best of them have exploitable weakpoints. They've gotten so good at expecting themselves to be on the losing side & patching up holes on the fly, having contingency hardware or tactics like all the time, that regardless of their effectiveness, makes them very hard to kill, despite how easy it is to beat them down. They're so ready for everything thrown in their way that screwing their plans always do little to mess them in a long run, while the GAR, being so reliant on being a meticulously cohesive whole, makes them extremely vulnerable if anything were to go south.

I think worth mentioning is the fact that the GAR could also reliably put the LAAT to excellent use in ground combat, which could nullify many flanking maneuvers attempted by the CIS (though not used as frequently as perhaps they should have been). True, the LAAT was (sadly) not well armoured or shielded but regardless, the weapons it could bring to bear from diverse positions other than head-on, could greatly assist the GAR in establishing periphery control and the CIS didn't really have a countermeasure, other than vulture droids and possibly buzz droids.

I always thought someone would rationalize the tactics and strategies used in Star wars and expand upon them in greater detail. For example: The Droids march in huge formations for the sake of organization but when combat starts they can move independently and engage in rudimentary small unit firing and maneuvering. Or The Clone Troopers set their blasters to a mid level setting so as to avoid collateral damage and friendly fire. Whereas their blaster rifles (being like portable anti materiel cannons) can potentially puncture holes through tanks or explode multiple droids per shot. Or that engaging the Droids on open ground is the only way to draw their attention so the Commandos and Jedi can reach their vital points, generals, leadership, and factories.

Let's not forget that the Separatists were using tanks and simple walker designs as early as Naboo while it took till the end of Attack of the Clones to see any semblance of armored vehicles on the republic side at all (and honestly, not even that many there)... The Republic was just soooo behind in every aspect of the war that didn't have to do with their troopers and LAATs that the Confederacy clearly had the upper hand in that regard. The only saving grace the republic had was that the Confederacy had already maxed out their R&D more or less by about mid war (not much changes after that), meanwhile the troopers were learning ways around the Confederacy's armor. So by the time armour became a standard for the Republic it was made specifically with purpose to counter Confederacy's armor (an advantage the Confederacy didn't have by designing theirs first), and this mostly seemed to start hitting it's stride about the same time in the war that the Confederacy was running out of ideas/funds (and momentum soon following). All together the Republic may have won in the end, but the Confederacy dominated armor in the beginning... IMO.

The GAR had higher quality when laying siege to a specific position due to their superior firepower, but lacked the flexibility for anything else; the CIS, meanwhile, lacked the sheer firepower to execute a single objective quite as well, but they could adapt to a wider array of battlefield situations, therefor I'd say their overall strategic doctrine was better.

I think the CIS have the best tactics. Even if their army not have the mobility of the Republic their numbers give them an incredible amount of firepower and their numbers give many chance to their commanders to change tactics, strategies and options during in battle but most importantly the CIS have an army can endure to the attrition of a long war and that is a thing surprisingly good in war..... The issue with talking about how good the Separatists actually are comes from TCW I think. Because of how much plot armour was used during the fights. For example, the CIS has a better navy, but the stats of.... say Munificents for example, do not match with the performance during the Clone Wars battle with the asteroids and ATTEs. The turbolaser blasts of 6 munificents should have been able to cripple those Venators, and it doesn't make sense that the ships got into the range of the republic's own ship guns either.

It's easy to make heavy armour, you just make it bigger. The fact the CIS dominated the light armour demonstrates so much more technical aptitude. The CIS also had the Hellfire with capabilities to take down AT-TEs with ease and the Super MTT which seemed immune to AT-TE fire. The GAR had weaker Infantry, light armour, heavy armour, artillery and air power, their strength came from the combined arms philosophy where aircraft could deploy units, armour would be physical protection for infantry, infantry would guide artillery and the command structure enabled them to use terrain. In any one area of combat they were out matched but they were always able to outsmart the enemy and get the advantage.

Flexibility is good, but it's useless when the success rates are still lowered than the enemy. As you said, the Republics' tactics allowed them to win more battles. So in that sense, I think the Republic had the slightly better tactics. Flexibility, like experience, is good, but if you don't use it correctly to produce results and wins it's useless. As Luke Skywalker once said, almost a year ago, "Talent without training is useless." On paper, the CIS flexibility was a good thing, but it was never used to its full capabilities, particularly because of Sith meddling to make sure the Republic won the war.

Can be summed up by looking at the old Galactic Battlegrounds faction rankings - CIS/Trade Federation has superior armored forces lol. But in all seriousness, I feel like both armies made up for their deficiencies in different but similar ways. A started in the video, the CIS had their superior armor to make up their inferior infantry; and while the Republic armor, while overwhelmingly more powerful, was predictable in their tactics, their more flexible infantry could more or less make up for the lack of light armor.
@yagdtigercommander

The CIS I think typically tend perform better in battles that can quickly overrun the defenders. Although their ground forces are more flexible they are less durable and are less effective in prolonged fights or siege. So basically the CIS to well use Starcraft as reference have to basically zerg rush republic ground forces in order to win. But if the Republic is able to dig and fortify heavily the GAR can and will be able to hold out for while and basically bleed the CIS dry of droids, equipment and other resources. Once the GAR is able to reinforce its defensive you units and the CIS attack has all but succeeded or has stalled out. Then GAR can mount a counter attack with unmatched fire power and fury that CIS cannot handle. If they are on the back foot and forced on the defensive the CIS cannot fortify as heavily as the GAR can and the firepower of the GAR is immense and will make short work of the CIS defenders. Yes the CIS are tactically flexible and numerical superior but the trade off is a lot of their tanks and equipment have less fire power or much less armour if they have sufficient fire power. Since most battle Droids are cheap expendable its heavy reliance on gaining quick victories in short battles or being on planets that can handy cap the GARs ability to deploy Heavy walkers. Although the GAR is less flexible it is more formidable. tenacious and durable. Also individual clones and platoons can be flexible and can think out side the box more than your droid counter part. The infantry are more flexible and the commanders are more flexible in tactics so from a command and tactics stand point the GAR can be more adaptable and flexible in the long run than their CIS counter Parts. However even if the combat vehicles are less flexible in themselves overall they are more durable and have more firepower than their CIS counterparts. So when comes to prolonged fights and the test of an armies endurance the GAR has the advantage. So IMO I think GAR is the best not because it as flexible but it is more tenacious and resilient it Armoured tactics allow to fight in prolonged and bloody battles that the CIS just can't compare to. Anyone can argue that the best armies are the ones that can win quick victories during battles of the course of War. The thing is War decides when it feels like its time is up. So basically I am saying is yah hope for quick war to win against an enemy but be prepared for a long and brutal one to if it comes to that. But I say its the armies that have endurance and grit that are the ones that will win ultimately. Sure they may lose battles and get their butts kicked time and again. But the Commanders and soldiers of such armies learn from past mistakes become stronger and more capable over time and once the other side starts losing that was built around quick Victories. Everything starts to go to shit because the leaders got over confident and over extended their forces now they are helpless against enemy that has emerged stronger than ever before and his charging them like a herd stampeding elephants that can't be stopped. The CIS had to win the War quickly and they couldn't excluding Palpatines interferences. It allowed the GAR to entrench themselves heavily when on the defensive. Allowing for the GAR to regroup and rally forces to defend republic strongholds and other key worlds under attack by the CIS. Then were able to counter attack the CIS and ultimately Win the War even though at times it reached a stalemate but the GAR was built around stalemate fighting and prolonged conflict the CIS was not whether they knew it or not at the time the CIS would break and be crushed under the might of GAR in spite of Numerical superiority.
@FalconWindblader
@FalconWindblader 2 года назад
Except that the CIS ain't stupid enough to just keep throwing droids mindlessly at the GAR if they really digged in. Unlike your usual zerg rush that comes from one or two places, the CIS forces could never run out as their forces are manufactured over dozens of places at any one time, & just about any one of them can make anything. The CIS kept throwing cannon fodder at the GAR precisely because they knew that the GAR can't be on the defensive for long. Despite the CIS' need to win things quick & dirty, the republic is still the one that needs to maintain offensive for political, if not tactical, reasons. They're the ones starting the war in the first place after all, & you can't just start a war & then hunker down most of the time. The CIS ultimately only wanted secession, not the death of the republic. It's the republic's unwillingness to let them leave that started the war in the first place.

@FalconWindblader
@FalconWindblader 2 года назад
Logistics is affected by how well supplied your stuff is & how well you can keep an eye on what goes where. While logistics for the mess that's the CIS would be a nightmare for any organic management, keep in mind that it's mostly tireless, unfeeling droid brains with no problem working around the clock, doing the work here. What may take days at least to sort out for organics would probably take only hours, if not minutes or even seconds, to sort out. What would actually be a nightmare for the CIS to manage would be utterly impossible, if not unimaginable, for organics to pull.

Generally, numbers ONLY really count for.. numbers. They're DEFINITELY NOT everything. And MANY actual real world battles was won by the much smaller side often as not. Generally it's whom is alot more flexible mixed with whom has the better equipment and ALSO, CRITICALLY, what the individuals in control can do with it. Which is a kinda flexibility inside being flexible. So while CIS HAD numbers they couldn't send EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE and attack or defend EVERYTHING all at the same time. An even big worlds will only allow so many troops on it. Especially if space is limited or the conditions are specific. It's a proven fact, work the LITERAL conditions and even absurdly outnumbered you can also LITERALLY crush said opposition and hold them at bay quite a long to near indefinitely if your troops and gear is top notch. Which are all what the Clones were meant to be. Truth is very few franchises sport very highly adaptable machine forces that rival that of humans or humanoids and CIS troops aren't among them. The droid COs they had just weren't as good as Clone and Jedi Commanders. An the Humanoid genius Tacticians the CIS had on such an interplanetary scale as Star Wars woulda been extremely rare giving the Clones a decent chance. They're really only critical issues were Jedi general's getting a clue and/or the Clone troops needed their ranks SERIOUSLY expanded.

Keep in mind that droids didn't break due to moral or get held off in the same way organic forces would. So alot of the tactics you would use to hold numerically superior forces at bay probably wouldn't work as droids just shrug them off and continue laying down fire.

@FalconWindblader

That's only true when your supply line is strapped in the first place. The CIS were never short in that regard. You can wipe out any one of their factory worlds, & the rest would just adjust & compensate in a matter of weeks. Logistics were easy due to not having to take organic requirements into consideration, & that just about every single piece of their hardware are built to be easy & cheap to maintain, while being highly customizable.

You say “sacrificing speed” in a way that implies you believe there some perfect combination of speed, firepower, mobility, numbers, etc. There is not. The Republic’s approach of developing machines and tactics to protect its weaknesses and doubling down on its strength was absolutely the right choice for any military. The problem is their generals in the field, the Jedi, had no idea what they were doing and no idea how to use the tools they had. Their strategies were basically to rush in, throw men at the enemy, and hope the Clone Commanders did the rest.

As seen in the onderon arc it was possible to destroy that tank with 1-2 soldiers wielding granades just by climbing on the tank, opening the hatch and dropping the explosives in... WHY THE HELL COULD YOU OPEN THE HATCH FROM THE OUTSIDE??? All the seps had to do was install a small lock on the inside and the tank would‘ve been so much better
