BIGGEST advantage to an animation. Casting is not as much of a hassle. Matching up voices to faces can be a lot easier and come out with a much better result. Plus animation can translate a more magical feel weather for music (like "Your lie in April" ) or for the descriptions that have kvothe eye color with his emotions.

That's easy, you just portray it visually in a way like showing something stretching out to touch a fire or something. Basically depict it like weaving in wheel of time (the book) where its a thing that stretches out from him while concentrating. Combine that with a montage early on of him being taught about it while with his troupe.

LIN MANUEL IS NO LONGER INVOLVED?! *sobs in a corner* BUT I totally agree with the fact that Lin Manuel has a very specific sound, and I haven’t personally heard any music he’s composed that strays away from that sound (maybe I haven’t heard enough of his stuff). He’s super talented, but this music cannot sound like that - it needs to be a genre of its own, with elements from the medieval era, mixed with classical/folksy/musical vibes. For anyone who hasn’t already, have a look at how I interpreted one of the songs from the Wise Man’s Fear and let me know if it’s anything close to what you’d have imaged! Thank you so much for another KKC video, these keep me going in a world that’s revealing itself to be more and more hellish by the day. 🙏✨

I agree with you. A trilogy of movies would be more condensed, leaving out a lot of nuances in the storytelling. An animated or live action series would be incredible! Since it’s a nested story, it would be cool and interesting if someone like Christopher Nolan could adapt this work. Inception, Memento, and The Prestige are some great examples of unconventional storytelling with unreliable narrators especially from the last two.

Yeah I’ve thought about this a lot and I think an anime would work well for this series. More screen time, inner monologue would work better, every character and the landscapes would have no limits. The biggest problem would be losing a lot of viewers. Anime is not a common media type for older readers, at least in the US. But there will also be a lot of new viewers because its an anime. Idk, i just want it on the tv and ill take what I can get.

@amandaw1462
@amandaw1462 2 года назад
I think there might be a risk of less viewers but that has shrunk significantly in the last few years. Animation is growing up and becoming more mainstream for adults. Just look at how incredibly big Arcane was, even among people who haven't played League. Adult people flocked to the cinema to watch the last Toy Story. So many people love Ghibli movies. While there still is a stigma of animation being for kids and nerds, it is continuously shrinking and adapting KKC in animation could strengthen that movement.

I'm going to be difficult and say I want three miniseries. Something along the lines of 5 or 6 episodes at about an hour and a half each. Every miniseries could cover one book. Much like the four miniseries which cover the lonesome dove saga (sorry for the western example on a fantasy channel, but that's all I could think of) or the one miniseries for Good Omens. The benefits to this is that each episode can be long enough to sandwich the back story between an opening and closing scene in the waystone without having to cut too much out. Also, for the story in story bits you can just do a whole episode dedicated to that. It's also better than just a show like game of thrones, because a show gives the impression that it's going to come out on a quasi-annual schedual. Whereas a miniseries is it's own thing and each season/series can come out years between each other without the expectation. Basically: I want three short, contained series. One for each book.

Was thinking could have the text come out of character's mouth when, say calling the name of the wind, etc.that way the audience can see the word. As for the songs perhaps show kvothe playing and his expression along with audience reactions while voice over of kvothe explaning it ver batim from the books.

While I like the concept of a film version, my concern is that a transition from the written word to visual medium will necessarily require an extraction of so much qualitative descriptions necessary for the rich narrative, that the story will be a mere shell of what it should be. My analogy is it would be the difference between eating a stringy overcooked piece of beef jerky versus a perfectly prepared cut of the best prime rib.

I still haven’t finished the video, but I already can say that when they announced that the series wouldn’t even be centered around the of story, or that in other adaptations they wanted to change Kvothe age, you already know is not good sing :c I mean, I think you can actually use the universe or world building of a book to expand its universe and make a whole new story with a world that has been so carefully created like the KKC’s, but I think that should be done by the author himself (or at list with his help) since I’m not sure if another person could set the vision of mr Pat and make it convincent. @AndrewBentonElevationFilms

Live Action could be a little tricky as you would probably have to have different actors for Kvoth as a 12-17 year old & Kote telling the story. You would also probably have trouble casting an actor who could either play a loot well or make it look really convincing. The Fey realm would obviously need to be modified somewhat for adaptation but overall, I think a multi-season show could do really well and I think an animated show with a unique art style like Spiderman into the multi-verse could work really well.

Honestly... animated would be nice... but thats because im a weeb. as a live action i would say a tv "mini series", like 4-5 ep per season, and 3 or 4 season would be enough. I dont want it rushed, but i dont want it to have more than the enough "silent scenes". And i dont want it to be just a season per book BECAUSE i think the present scenes, in the waystone inn, deserve more time than some times we have them in the books, because they are slow burns. About the animation... A great thing about the books is that they arent action filled, WHICH MAKES THE FEW ACTIONS, LIKE THE DRACUS ATTACKING THE VILAGE AND KVOTHE'S BAND VS THE BANDITS THAT MUCH COOLER!!! And just those scenes in animation are enough to convince me. Another would be the felurian arc... NO NOT BECAUSE OF THAT, but its easier to show a surreal place with animation than with live action... not everyone can pull a "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" out of the rug.

I agree that the story would be extremely difficult to adapt directly. It’s a tale almost only suited to its media. If I was given control and given 10 1 hour episodes, I’m starting with Kvothe entering the University and flashing back throughout each episode to how he got to that point. That said so much of my enjoyment with the series is the writing, how much Rothfuss hides in a simple turn of phrase, just brilliant. That said it would likely happy eventually, I’d hope who ever is charge, does right by the medium they are in. Trading out clever language for visual hints and sound motifs.

I’d imagine adapting 2-3 books is quite a bit easier to avoid heavy changes than adapting 14 books lol. But I wouldn’t be surprised. Interesting tho both WoT and NotW rely heavily on inner monologue, so there’s really no other way but to change things for a new medium. Hearing ppls voice in their heads out loud hardly ever works on screen. Unless they go full Anime which I’m down for 😂 idk how they pull off some of the Eolian scenes and make them the same level of intensity. Will need some very creative directors! Unfortunately Animation is still insanely expensive. Not many studios are willing to take that risk. Especially when most of them are dead set on getting their own “Game of Thrones”. Hopefully by the time Stormlight makes it to adaption talks we will have moved on a bit from this Game of Thrones chasing phase and Animation is less expensive/risky. Lastly I’m 100% with you, the 3rd book needs to be out before anything happens.

I'm a huge fan and if no one will adapt it until I'm super famous I will make that film! I think movies are difficult. Honestly Patrick rothfuss' Dramaturgy is veeery lax and episodic rather then a classic 3 act movie thing. But series! Series would be nice. Really really empathise on the realism and normal persons things. Good writing and rymes or what ever don't mean you can't make it I to a great visual art! I don't know how it will be adapted if it ever did but if they adapted it they better look for a way to include that "three silences" thing in the into and outro (Tho imo sometimes the descriptions in the book were so marvelous, Ruthfuss would often descrive (for example) different kind of shrugs, smiles, grins ... every single one with different meanings and implications, which is fairly easy to do in words and gives a perfect picture of the scene to the reader, it's gonna be a tragedy how most of them would look the same in an adaptation)

The only way I could see this being properly adapted is going with Mr. Robot's route. In that show the narrator actively talks, lies to and clashes with the audience. That was done masterfully in that show and I think that the frame of the KKC is perfect for a story like that.

I agree with you about filming the books in any form. However, if they are filmed, I hope they tighten up the over long, drawn out parts of Wise Man. Secondly, I nominate either John Williams or Andre Desplat to write the score. Williams (Star Wars and the first 3 Harry Potters) is now in his eighties, and may be retired; Desplat did both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films writing wonderfully active and also sensitive music.

I feel like an adaptation of The Kingkiller Chronicles would either be horrible or a masterpiece depending on how it is done. It is true that a lot of essence of the books is transported through poetry, but if you think about what poetry is, then it's a written picture. Well, a movie is a moving picture. So I would translate some of the written pictures into moving pictures in a "poetic" way. Of course, voice overs would aid that, so I would also include the narrative of the Waystone Inn. I agree that a series would give more justice to the books than a movie franchise. It would allow the time and space to tell the story of Kvoth and the other characters. To me it would be important that the actors and actresses playing the main characters are classically trained because that would potentially lend them the gravitas in their voices to pull of the voices in books and how they are described (I'm especially thinking about Kvoth and Denna...) - as opposed to actors and actresses who are only trained or have experiences in front of the camera. This point of view comes from somebody who is an actress...

Personally I would only be disappointed in whatever they did (movies, video games, tv show). So much of what makes this story so different and work so well is Patrick Rothfuss. The lyrical writing and little hints sprinkled throughout the story, along with the way he writes “music” like you said. This, to me, could never be conveyed satisfactorily and would only disappoint. Not saying it wouldn’t be a good show, it might be, but Patrick never settles for good, or even great, he pours his heart and soul in to every word and every line. I feel the show wouldn’t and couldn’t do the same and it would only leave me wishing for that little bit more. Instead I would like to see a tv show where a new story in Temerant is told with Rothfuss on the storyboard and writing crew so that he can advise and it would be a canon show that adds to this world and lore in general allowing the fans to delve deeper into this world. Personally the story I would like for them to tell is the story of Lanre, this is a major point in history and we hear so many different tales of what happened I think it would be fun to see what actually happened. We know the bones of the story and that would keep us interested and invested but we also know so little that it would give the writers and storyboarders some freedom to creat something new and cool while breaking free (partially) from the shadow of Patrick and his writing abilities. Maybe they could do something like WoT did and add some bonus content, animated to tell a quick tale from kvothes life as a fan servicy thing.

I've had many thoughts on how a KKC adaptation could work. I stand by my belief that no type of adaptation is ever "impossible," but there are certainly hurdles and obstacles to each medium chosen. Personally I lean towards a trilogy of movies, but I would not want to see that until after the 3rd book is released. The main reason is with an adaptation to film, the mysteries/clues/stories could be distilled into a simplified form more suited for the visual medium. But if we don't know the end, we don't know what could or should be trimmed down or changed, and the writers would kind of be fumbling in the dark for what to keep and how. KKC has always come off more as a mystery novel disguised as a fantasy adventure, and thus the presentation of clues would be paramount in the adaptation's success. I also feel that something akin to a more serious version of The Princess Bride could work, in the way that they cut back and forth between the narration of the story, and the actual story events themselves. Done well it could add a lot of levity, but also intrigue and emotion (I think of Kote leaving the Waystone for a bit after describing his parent's deaths as a good example). Another comparison that comes to mind are some Wes Anderson films, like the Grand Budapest Hotel, have a similar stories within stories structure, each with their own look (and often their own aspect ratio) to clue the audience in as to how deep in the storytelling they are. tldr: An adaption of films could absolutely work, but with several caveats. Need to know the end from the beginning to know how to best adapt, and need to lean heavily into some stylistic structural decisions to convey the story. Turning it into a standard adventure movie would probably just end up mediocre at best.

It would either have to be epically long movies or movies split into multiple parts like HP did with deathly hallows for each book. I think a TV series would be a better bet for being able to get the needed content in to tell the stories. 12-16 1 hour long episodes per book would give you more time to tell the stories vs a 2 hour movie for each one.

What if the narrator had a ‘How I met your mother’ style (not the same feeling obviously. I like the dexter style narration too. I wish more tv shows had non standard lengths. Like one episode could be only five or six minutes and the next could be an hour and a half. Then this could be a Netflix thing or something

I think you could make a decent adaptation from the main trilogy. It would have to be a slower paced movie than standard Hollywood affair, but the recent dune movie makes me think audiences are willing to accept that. it still wouldn't be easy though, all the movies should be scripted before filming starts, to maintain that well planned feel of the books and the extensive foreshadowing. The adaption would have to be cinema, the story structure doesn't have enough of an episodic rise and fall of tension to work as a tv show. To bring that flow to the series would leave it strangely rushed and stretched out. The movies should be slow and still, for the most part. There should be time with no audible score, and time with no dialogue. And there should be plenty of time cut back to the narration in the waystone inn. This will make the action setpieces that do occur, like trebon, even more impactful, and keep the intimate feel of a persons life story. The music is obviously very important. The songs kvothe plays need to be well written, and should work well with the score, but also by themselves. Playing full songs for some of the pieces would be a bit difficult, especially Sir Savien at 16 min, so this would be a difficult point. I do agree that 3 movies is a bit short, even at lotr length movies. I think the story provides a natural structure for 4 movies, one pre university, one at university, one for chasing the wind, and one for the doors of stone. The 2nd and 4th movies would probably be the longest. It wouldn't be easy, but it could be done. You would want to pick the producer and director very carefully. As for casting, well it's a bit vain, but I think would make a pretty good kvothe. I have the "moves like an old man" thing down pretty well, and I sing a decent baritone, especially with some editing magic.

Honestly, I feel like the only screen adaptation that would have a chance to work would be an anime, since internal monologues are actually a staple in anime as is subtle clues beiing visually brought to light. Plus, the whole magic thing would be easier to be made to look natural and in harmony with the world around it since no special fx would be needed, it's just a matter of drawing it like in Full Metal Alchemist. And even if digital fx were to be added, it would help add to the visuals, like in Demon Slayer, rather than seem clunky and awkward like in the Last Air Bender movie

I agree the Kingkiller Chronicle would be tough to adapt to film, but I think it would be cool to see a series of graphic novels! I think it can be adapted. No it won't be easy but it can be done. One idea for inner monologue is have the older Kvothe do a voiceover to explain what he is thinking and feeling while we are watching what the young Kvothe is actually doing. Not constantly, just interjecting an occasional comment to Chronicler when it is needed

I have thought a lot about this and I think the best way to adapt it would be through animation. I think it's the only way to capture the world in just the way Rothfuss wanted it. If it wwere done like Arcane that would be amazing. But it would probably take another ten years.

I know it would be well over 48 hours but I wouldn't mind if an adaption was just the audiobook with aminated visuals. Or just the part where Kvothe calls down lightning in the WMF. I would still listen/watch it all anyway. Also if there was a tv series rather than inner monologues I would rather they just put in more interludes or cut-aways to the present and just have Kvothe in glorious prose narrate his internal struggles to Chronicler and Bast.

Its a great series but you'd have to cut down certain portions such as Tarbean, its depressing and not compelling. Not eliminate but fast forward through the major plot points. One of the other tricky parts is the age of the Actor Kvothe, would you need 3 actors for child Kvothe (death of parents/Tarbean), Teenage Kvothe (university era) and then an adult Kvothe (telling the story at Waystone inn)

If there was an adaptation, I don't want it to be movies- there is NO WAY they'd be able to get it sufficiently faithful with all the info there is in the books, and it would be VERY HARD for them to successfully tell a different story in the way that Jackson did with LOTR. I might be interested in a series- and I think I'd prefer animated. I think they could get the blue fire, blue fire and crumbling metal better, the Draccus, the Fey, the sleeping mind scenes, the University itself, all better than would be possible with live action. I know CGI has come a long way, but I feel like you could play more with animation, and be more able to communicate the magnificence and strangeness better than would be possible in live-action. I'm sure they could do a live action, but I think that animated characters presents a higher fidelity to the source material. Putting that aside... I'm not super sure whether I want an adaptation at all. If it came out I'd be excited and watch it, don't get me wrong, but I feel like so much of the experience is wrapped up in the prose, the book itself.

For me live action would be best, however maybe a combination of animation and live? Also if there is so much in the books(btw have not read the books yet) then an HBO MAX series would be better. Also mind narrative would not bother me at all. I did see Dexter and that was very well done. While the narration is being done you could show beautiful animation of the stuff he is talking about. You need to think outside the box when adapting fantasy novels. They don't fit into the normal style of typical movies made by Hollywood.

I agree that a live action version would be best. I also think the story telling timeline would have to be altered and simplified to work with any tv or movie. I’ve heard it best explained that a cinematic version can only contain 10% of the story of a book. So getting a great show runner / storyteller to distill Patrick’s world will not be a simple task. GoT did it for the first few seasons, but completely failed later - especially when they exceeded the written story. So, in the end, I think I’d be satisfied with just getting “The Doors” out so we can resolve the story, and leave any Hollywooding of it to the perils of fate.

I would rather it be an animation. Not because I think the animation format would necessarily be better, but because I think it would be cheaper and they would be able to do it without cutting anything. There is just so much that is important. I do agree that a live action would be amazing. Imagine the scene of felurian sewing with rays of light. Also, I think live action would give the ademre fights more weight. Still, I think an animation style like Arcane could do it justice.

Honestly, my fears for a potential series start with casting (warning: spoilers ahead). I mean how the hell do you cast Kvothe? Just covering the physical characteristics is nigh on impossible. The actor needs to be a sixteen-ish red haired - true as flame - and green eyed actor (I know, eye color can be altered with special effects, but it would be so cool if it wasn't. For context, just 0.04% of the world's population has those characteristics), able to act on stage, do freaking parkour and ride a giant horse. And then add on top of that the complexity of the character: his ability to hide his pain following a traumatizing past, his charisma, his sensibility and a potential propension to extreme violence, which includes murdering a group of people in cold blood. Oh, and tiny btw, he needs to be a literal god playing the lute. I mean. Bruh.

An animated series will be the best for maintaining continuity of kvoths age when folloing his story. In a live action the actor will age so damn fast that your once 15 year old star is now in his 20s before wise mans fear is even finished. But animated it would keep him grounded to that proper age range. But thats really the obly major advantage i could see.
