Just sharing my ideas one of my favorite book series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. This video may contain spoilers for those of you who are not up to date with the series. That goes for the HBO show and the books.
I'm just speculating and guessing on some ideas that I have on how future events will transpire in the series. Keep in mind however, I know nothing.

Kovthe always succeeds apart from when he: - Gets his father's lute destroyed. - Get beaten black and blue multiple times by multiple different people. - Gets on the wrong side of four masters in his first term... Only getting back into the good graces of two. - Gets on the bad side of two prestigious nobles. - Is making a mess of the relationship he has with Denna/missing opportunitys to see her. - Gets his arse handed to him by a little girl. - Talks to the nope Deamon making his life, and susiquently the whole world, go to fuck. - Loses his whole identity and can't play music anymore. However good review and I've just finished my first listen thought (listening to the reading by Nick Podehl) and thinking of doing a second already...

Yeah but he also you know- is a savant musician, singer, songwriter, alchemist, invents some stuff to deflect arrows, kills the giant drugged dragon thing, gets money, gets good in fighting in a short time, gets good in magic in a short time, gets it going with some people and gets friends, his biggest problems are some noble men and a door. He even killed a chandrian or at least fought and drove them away. Idk. It gets a bit tiring. I still love the dude and story though.

MMMmmm... I'm going to challenge you on a few things that you seem to have forgotten and therefore are representing as the Mary Sue-ing of Kvothe. 1) Felurian wasn't in love with him, she was bored. She spared him so he could sing to her, then sing ABOUT her in the regular world, He spent time with her doing the thing that she specializes in, and spends months and months learning what she had to teach. When he comes out banging everyone, you kind of understand that it is a newfound skill that he likes and was conditioned to do. 2) Kvothe busts his ass, sells what he can and goes to a galet in order to scrape together money for the arcanum. It never 'magically' appears for him. At one point after an altercation , a professor tells him to take some time off because they were going to raise his tuition way too high, and he has to go out and try to make his way for a semester, and takes the time to find a patron who can help him so he doesn't have to struggle. 3.) Actually, it's only in the the LEGEND that no one escaped Felurian, Kvothe surmises people HAD to leave her lair intact or there would be no stories about her. 4.) I will give you the gifted musician part. That and his intellect are the two advantages that he has to balance out that he is racially persecuted and impoverished. 4.) He does fail at many important things. He is stuck in an unrequited love situation where it is suspected that the man who is her patron is the man who killed Kvothe's family, he pisses off a guy at school who can and does financially crush him, he's so damaged that the potential loss of his instrument and the compassion of a waif who lives in the basement are too much for him. He is temperamental, arrogant, and whatever he did to start that war is causing suffering everywhere. So *shrug* like it or not, there are some nuances to those critiques.

Exactly, this struggle also plays so perfectly with you as a reader I feel, you really want him to succeed it makes you hold your breath wondering if he will and everytime he does and finds some stability and security he almost immediately loses is on some level and you really feel that loss, atleast that's how I experience it. The problem with Denna is a case of too much tell, not enough show. We have to listen to him say how great she is in vague terms endlessly, but are given little reason as readers to think anywhere nearly as highly of her as he does. Anyone over the age of 22 can see how that relationship is going to play out. So he comes off as a sap.

@@rogerfvb I agree. Rothfuss makes that clear when Bast said that Denna was beautiful, but she wasn't as flawless as Kvothe made her sound. People throughout the book also say that Denna sounds cruel when described, but Kvothe brushes that off. He has some serious blinders on. He can only speak vaguely because he has created his own image of her. Just like everyone else.
@idachristineriksson6782
@idachristineriksson6782 5 лет назад
@@sarahmchugh4169 Exactly, that's why I love Denna. What we know about Denna is really more information about Kvothe. Like... that's a unhealthy relationship but is it THAT weird that a guy with Kvothe's closeness issues (which Fella points out in the end of WMF) would go for a the most aloof girl and put her on a piedestal rather than a real relationship? I think he is protecting himself from a real relationship by focusing on Denna instead of connecting with girls that suits him better, because he is still traumatized from the loss of his family. A relationship would mean that he would have to talk to someone about that someday, and at 17 he is just not there yet.

I tend to think that Kvothe is something of an unreliable narrator, as he pretty commonly admits to embellishing/ altering stories to make them more entertaining, and also is even quoted as saying "The best lies about me are the ones I told". Additionally, regarding the Cthaeh, it never lies; it doesn't have to. It just tells you exactly the truth needed to spur you on the most destructive, ruinous path. Judging from the broken mess telling Lochees the story, I'd say it's been pretty successful. Great work, love your stuff.
@CharlesZane_

I have to disagree about Devi. She's way to arrogant with no reason for the reader to believe. She didn't just easily beat Kvothe either. He forced her to cut loose and she needed a hand held campfire worth of energy as a source. Meanwhile, he had no source and he was both physically and mentally exhausted. On equal ground, I think he'd take her. It'd be damn close at least. Denna is also meant to be exactly like Kvothe. They are both intelligent and very independent people with huge egos. Neither can simply tell the other how they actually feel, and as such they both fuck everything up. Spoiler**I also think it's pretty clear that Kvothe is the nephew of Lady Lackless. Also, the story Kvothe heard in Tarbean is the story of how Lanre became Haliax.
@gaspardg119
@gaspardg119 3 года назад
No Devi would still beat him, she is said to be better than Elxa Dal, the master sympathist and she can do 8 sympathetic binding while Kvothe limit is 5. You misread the fight, Kvothe first goes to an inn to collect ashes, so he can use the energy of the fire to do his binding, then he takes one of Devi hair to put it on his doll, to bind Devi and even if Kvothe has a doll and a source of energy he is not able to prevent Devi from moving, Devi who has no source of energy and is under Kvothe's binding is still able to reach her pocket warmer and once she does Kvothe gets destroyed

I agree mostly on your take on Denna. Too much cat & mouse play between them, without either one really knowing what they want or how to go about it. Totally disagree about the sex. Once he returns to the university, he's not bed hopping constantly with all the available women. He's DATING. Sure, maybe he slept with a few gals, but it's unsaid. In fact he's told by Fela that one of his dates is mad because he DIDN'T try anything with her! . . . My main though concerning the series is that I have no idea how Rothfuss is going to wrap it up in one book. He's spend 2 full books going through roughly 6-7 years of Kvothe's life. Now he's going to cover the next 12-15 years in one novel, all while cleanly telling us 1) How he got the Kingkiller nickname, 2) the story behind the war going on in the present day , 3) what happens with Denna , 4) how he finds The Chandrian and what happens there, 5) If he keeps his promise and goes back to Felurian eventually, 6) If he ever finds proof that his mom is Meluan Lackless's runaway sister (and what happens if he does), 7) If/when/how he gets kicked out of the University, 8) how he comes by the three locked chest of Roah wood in his room, 9) when/where he met Bast & took him (as an apprentice?), 10) who Denna's mysterious Master Ash is, 11) who Puppet really is and why he was introduced, etc. While we're at it, I also want to know what happens to his friends. Do Sim & Fela marry? What happens to Willem, Devi, Mola, Auri, and others?

I love Denna. You know why? Because she is Kvothe's blind spot. It makes him human. And, knowing some people from broken families, people who had to fend for themselves, she is actually a pretty realistic character.
@KUNTAR
@KUNTAR 5 лет назад
I'd rather his blind spot be denner resin. Lord, Denna sucks. I can't find much to like about her. She's supposed to be very pretty, she sings incredibly well, and has musical talent. Beyond that though, she's the furthest thing from a catch. I can list many ways she sucks but it can all be boiled down to the fact that she lives in lies. Her relationships, her actions, her many names, etc. She exists in falsehood. When you meet someone like this, you run. You GTF away from them, as they are toxic. Rothfuss tries to get around this by having her be more open and true towards Kvothe and has him play the male girlfriend operating their relationship on lies as well {ie "we're just friends") but this just adds to the disaster. If they some how end up together it's going to feel so phony.

@@KUNTAR She IS denner resin! His fleeting moments with her, the high, make him feel so good he chases her all over the place and missing her is worse than actually being with her ever was good. Names are gigantic in this series and hers is damn near heroin(denner). They even have that whole subplot with the denner resin in case it wasnt clear enough yet. At the end Kvothe is literally chasing a dragon on a path of destruction. (Draccus to be fair) The question is does she do this knowingly to ensnare him? She had the yllish knot in her hair for lovely and was embarrassed when kvothe could read it, like she was found out.
@KUNTAR
@KUNTAR 4 года назад
@@jschoma11 I believe you about the analogy. I'm just saying she is toxic and not a catch. Anyone who has ever known someone like this has experienced the downward spiral such a person will draw you into. If that is how the story plays out, that will be fitting. But if the story takes a "she is just misunderstood and has always been good" turn, that will stink. It would play out a male girlfriend's fantasy rather than have any ties to how real world toxic relationships work out. I am sure there are plenty of "Knight in Shining Armor" type teens that would love the story taking a path where Denna is just misunderstood and by Kvothe unfailingly worshipping her she is redeemed but with how people in abusive relationships predominantly work in reality she will only spin Kvothe down a tragic path.
@jschoma11
@jschoma11 4 года назад
Oh absolutely she isn't healthy for him. I'm not sure she is inherently wrong or malicious but the way he obsesses over her only hurts him. One thing that's certain is the Cthaeth uses his unhealthy obsession with her to manipulate Kvothe and into continuing seeking Cinder. If we believe the Cthaeth is evil does that mean the chandrian arent? I think eventually we end up with Kvothe either learning that the Chandrian are not evil and/or he kills Cinder and has to take his place among them. I think what breaks him is either learning his whole life has been a lie or becoming what he set out to destroy.
@comaleaf1837

I know what you mean about Denna, but I don't think the problem is with Denna, I think it's with Kvothe. Denna behaves pretty reasonably but his reactions are always so predictable.. fawning over he but never saying anything, practically worshipping her in secret. It's kinda creepy. What I ~love~ about those books is how all the folklore weaves together and hints at some much bigger story. Bits contradict each-other, bits support each-other, the motivations and alignments of mythic figures are hinted at and then completely subverted. There's something very fantastical about it all which genuinely feels unusual compared to most fantasy novels. Much like GRR Martin, Rothfuss seems to spend a lot of time building in these mysteries with hints and suggestions hidden deep in every aspect of the writing. Love it. It does seem like the Cthaeh was at least partially successful as in the framing novel, adult Kvothe in the inn, the world seems to have gone to hell and it is implied to be related to things Kvothe did (the 'kingkiller' ? which king?) ASOIAF is definitely a much more in-depth study of characters than TKC which only follow one person (other than the two novella). The TKC feels much more storybook though, more adventure. Not that they have to be compared! :)

I don't understand how people can be denying Kvothe's over-perfection by saying "he struggles throughout the book to get what the has!" It is the fact that he always succeeds in these struggles in legendary fashion that make him seem so perfect and unrelatable. Like the video mentions he is one of the youngest people let into the university and becomes a prodigy at basically everything he touches. He is the best musician, the best student at sympathy, a successful inventor, a prodigy at the Adem martial arts, and has every girl's panties dropping around him by the end of the second book. He gets loads of money from his accomplishments, only to have it taken away from him by some plot device so we can see the next amazing way he gets to succeed and find more money. He also shows signs of being a psychopath when he murders every Ruh impersonator including the women in their sleep. Even if they were terrible people it is still pretty insane for someone to do. I do have hope for his character though, since I think this could lead to an interesting downfall into the now defeated and hopeless innkeeper telling the story. I really like Bast's character and think it would be more interesting if Kvothe ends up dying/ failing leaving Bast to carry the mantle and/or clean up Kvothe's mess, instead of Kvothe simply making a miraculous comeback and becoming fantasy Jesus- like so many people seem to want.
@KUNTAR

I agree to a large extent, and what's funny to me is that he is amazing at so many complex and difficult things, but then we see his "weaknesses" when he fails at something that should be far beneath him. Like math, or Yllsh knots, or alchemy, or the Yllsh language. But then he succeeds to a level almost as if he were one in 10 million in so many other things, like Singing, his Lute, his Sympathy, his Naming, his Lethani/Ketan (they said in one year he'd be as good as Tempi), Songwriting, etc. I don't mind hero's with talents, but there comes a point where you're like, "Okay, you're the best at that too?".

Felurian didn't spare Kvothe for no reason. Kvothe actually got a partial grasp of Felurian's True Name, which was enough to stop her from banging him to death basically on reflex. Then he used his skill in music to write a song about her, cleverly using the fact he had been a virgin and had no basis of comparison to judge Felurian as a lover to persuade her to let him go bang mortal women to get the comparison needed to write the perfect song for her. So it wasn't just Felurian's lucky whim; Kvothe had use naming and then his wits to get out of there alive.

And yes, he works hard for his skills, and I can see some of his skills being related (i.e. music/code-breaking/language are all about pattern recognition), but he always gets out of everything... I've never understood this criticism that Kvothe is so good at everything. He's not! Typically he is mostly shown doing things he enjoys or is a prodigy at, yes, but he is the one telling the story, and so he skips the stuff he doesnt like, which, he drops out of math and chemistry because he cant do them, he has a terrible temper that frequently gets him into trouble, he also falls off an inn breaking and entering, something he should be "perfect" at, and nearly dies and spends weeks recovering and desperately trying to protect himself and his friends essentially keep him alive, then collaborate with him in one of the best scenes of any of the books to help him succeed the second attempt. He makes brash and foolish decisions sometimes. We see him succeed and fail at things he does to varying degrees, it's not just win win win all the time.

Something else to consider is that with Kvothe being the narrator of his own story to Chronicler, Patrick Rothfuss could be playing with an Unreliable Narrator. And that really makes this entire story fascinating. This is Kvothe's tale coming from his own mouth. We could very easily come to the end of the series,just to find out that a lot of this stuff was made up. That maybe he didn't pull off half of the things he's claiming he's done.

Alsooo, people FORGET that he is just a freeking fly trying to fight gods. There is a reason for why he is basically an emotional wreck in present and why he has become a weak piece of nothing. He changed his name, he caused the war, he killed, etc. We already know that he basically had a HUGE failure from the get go. Yes he is a genius, so he gets things faster and he is someone who can be in the ranks of selitos, lyra and probably even Iax. But there is also a reason why the chandrian let him live, he will do something wrong, he will serve them in some way or another, he is a huge victim here and there is ALWAYS the pressure of this behind all of his wins, always are those wins just stepstones of his life that is doomed to tragedy. There are also many many many falls that others mentioned and people just forget about those, because they cannot stand a genius. All of you should check out Berserk manga where the main character is VERY similar to Kvothe in a sense that he has many wins and is incredibly strong. The main character is basically the strongest fighter of the human race, but again, he does many many many mistakes! And for some reason he is not hated at all, he is beloved like no character ever! He is not a genius, but he is basically Kvothe that is a physique genius. Dont get me wrong, I love Guts, but people should give Kvothe a break!

Of course you've read these too! For me this series has come the closest to igniting that all-immersing, almost obsessive feeling that only ASOIAF has been able to do for me.I agree, it is flawed and a little clumsy at times, but his lore is fascinating and I'm filled with questions about the Chandrian, the Amyr, the stone door/ lockless box. Devi is absolutely my favorite female character but I like Denna as well, though her dynamic with Kvothe is nothing if not frustrating.

I love these books, and I agree with you for the most part, but I think that Kvothe does fail pretty often. He's extremely intelligent, but he's also pretty arrogant and has a tendency to dive into problems without fully thinking them through and considering the consequences. His extensive music and stage training with his education from Abenthy give him a lot of resources, but he really does fuck himself over all the time. Whether it's making dangerous enemies, flying off at the handle, or assuming he's up to some task, he's pretty bad at keeping himself out of trouble. His skill, talent, and intelligence kinda only mitigates the bad situations his personality, temper, and mouth get him into.

I think your criticisms are unfounded. You have to look at it correctly, Kvothe isn't a regular person in his world, he's a man who's inspired songs and who is crossing the line between legend and myth. It's like looking at Isaac Newton's life and saying "Bah! He's too perfect at maths! Unbelievable!" Yes he is gifted but most of his wins come from his silver tongue. Just think about it, every single time he "miracolously" gets out of an impossible situation is because he's talking and convincing and manipulating. He's broke? He gives a speech to the faculty and THEY pay HIM to study in the University. The horse he wants to buy is too expensive? He talks and fumbles his way into a 25% discount. He wants a song about the Chandrian? Asks it to Skarpy along many other children and his gets picked. Trapped in Fae with Felurian? He tricked her into releasing him by talking! Needs to win a crowd in the Eolian? Picks a song which *lyrics* bring people to tears. The only time a solution comes to him from nowhere that I can remember is the Denner resin him and Denna find during the dracus episode, which can be sold for tons of money. Guess what? They have to use it all and they get none of the money. How can you say "he can't fail" when literally all his plans always fail, when he falls out of 3 or 4 roofs in 2 books, when he has more stitches and scars than Frankenstein's monter? He's just a street smart smooth talker who can improvise. And btw, Elodin was accepted in the University at 14 and graduated at 18, Kvothe ain't that special in academic regards.
@TheChicoPapa
@TheChicoPapa 5 лет назад
1. I feel like while a lot of Kvothe's success comes from having a silver tongue, a lot is due from just being amazing at everything. LIke his success in sympathy, music, martial arts, naming, sygaldry, etc. And you can argue that this story in its nature is about a legendary figure so he has to be amazing at everything, but that doesn't solve any of the problems that accompany having a perfect character- not being relatable, blandness, lack of tension during important sections, etc. I pretty much never felt that Kvothe was in any serious danger during the books because of this and that is a problem. It's like arguing that "this movie was about an uninteresting event so it is OK for the movie to be uninteresting!" The logic isn't wrong but that doesn't change the fact that the movie was boring. Also, a book about Newton's life that only consisted of him being presented math problems and then successfully solving them would be a problem with the book- even if he was an amazing thinker. 2. All the failures you mention are superficial in nature and just set up for him to succeed in other ways. Yes, he falls off roofs but they never really impact the story or him in a serious way- he always gets patched up without any chronic injuries or lasting problems. Yes he runs out of money, but he always finds a way to get it back by being amazing at something else. Yes he has a bully, but always ends up finding a way to outsmart him. Basically all these "failures" are really just brick walls set up for Kvothe to smash through in impressive ways. I'm not saying that the books aren't good or that Kvothe won't eventually have to face some sort of serious consequences- since he clearly does as Kote the innkeeper, but you can't say that he isn't Mary Sue to some extent. He is pretty much the definition of one.
@sarahmchugh4169
@sarahmchugh4169 5 лет назад
@@TheChicoPapa But the book made sure to show that he isn't the best at anything. He is very intelligent, that is true, but not the best. He went to Adem and learned quickly, but absolutely every warrior there is still superior to him. Since he ended his training there, it isn't likely that he will advance in that regard. Also, even though he is a prodigy at binding, Devi is still better than him. She isn't even that much older than him. He doesn't catch on to naming magic as quickly as Fela. And he still struggles with it when he isn't in danger. He learned Tema quickly, but he struggles with other languages. He is smart, bit he isn't amazing at math. He has only really learned about a few subjects at the University. Of he was a Mary Sue he would have mastered everything and been better than the teachers. Finally, he always gets into trouble that could have been prevented if he wasn't so prideful. He constantly makes absolutely awful decisions. As in, major flawed logic. He is definitely very flawed.
@TheChicoPapa
@TheChicoPapa 5 лет назад
@@sarahmchugh4169 The fact that he is prideful (which leads to conflict he overcomes) and there are characters better than him in certain areas of expertise doesn't at all take away from the fact that he is a Mary Sue in my mind. A Mary Sue isn't necessarily someone who is the best in the world at everything they do; in fact there are characters in other stories who practically are the best at everything they do, but are not Mary Sues. A character becomes a Mary Sue when their extreme proficiency in many fields leads to a character that readers cannot relate to or identify with. This character then causes the conflicts in the story, which should be full of tension, to have a great lack of tension or anticipation about what will happen- which is exactly what happens with Kvothe. Also, the examples you listed, I think, perfectly illustrates how he is a Mary Sue. Sure he isn't the best at every single thing, but what other character you listed is even close to being comparably proficient as Kvothe in as many areas and in as little time? With the Adem, sure he is not the best warrior there compared to those who have dedicated their lives to the art, but he is pretty much the fastest learner and exceeds way beyond what would be reasonable for someone with no fighting training. They even say he would surpass Tempi soon if he keeps it up. He can't yet beat Devi yet but still completely surpasses everyone else in his class, and can outmatch people who have been studying it for much longer. Even the Fela example I would argue is wrong: while Kvothe wasn't as successful in the classroom, he utilizes naming in extremely powerful and more practical ways outside of it- like calling the wind, breaking free from the sex goddess, etc. I can name a ton of examples but the point I'm trying to make is that he doesn't have to be the absolute best at everything to be an unrelatable, unrealistically extraordinary protagonist. Kvothe isn't the best at every single thing, but he's the unreasonably good at doing all of the important things that, together, are central to getting through the conflicts of the story.
@nerzer11
@nerzer11 5 лет назад
@@TheChicoPapa The fact, that Kvothe can tell the whole story as Kote shows you that he will survive the whole thing. The tension is in how he does it. And he often does it in cool and extraordinary ways. It's never a deus ex machina moment. All his skills are well established. As when he succeeds with winning his pipes despite missing a lute string it's not magical. He learned to play that way for weeks, when he was a kid. Most of his skills resolve in being a quick learner and a good actor. As Ben said, he is an extraordinarily good learner. He rarely needs to hear things twice and never makes the same mistake twice. Of course he is extraordinary. By the time he is an innkeeper he is quite a legend. It is in fact fascinating, that all these exorbitant stories are based on events that were quite ordinary. One step leads to another. Nothing seems to come out of nowhere.
@TheChicoPapa
@TheChicoPapa 5 лет назад
@@nerzer11 I don't think I said that he succeeds because of deus ex machinas, or that there shouldn't be tension because we know he lives through the story. I agree their should be tension for how he solves these problems too (though I don 't believe there is much of it). I didn't even say his skills weren't well established in the narrative. I also think it's interesting that these exorbitant stories are often quite ordinary. I don't really know why this comment was directed at me to be honest, we agree on most things. I do think it's strange to say his plethora of skills comes down to him being a quick learner, as if that takes away from the fact that he's amazing at everything he does? Of course people are good at things because they are good learners, that's the only way to get good at most things. I was really only arguing over one thing, not about most of the points you brought up. I did enjoy the books.

You are entitled to your opinions... but, 1. I think we are supposed to kind of dislike or mistrust Denna, which is why we don't see everything going on with her. I get the feeling you think she is boring, but I think behind the scenes she is running around being the female version of Kvothe. We just don't see her do all of that. 2. He didn't escape Felurian because she loved him, he escaped because he's tricky and he held her song as a hostage. Classic fairytale/mythology logic. Which I thought was great. 3. While he was with Felurian he was trained in many sexual arts, it is only natural that as a 16/17 year old boy he would try them out and experiment. I don't think he has too much sex in the book. He does date a lot, but I think we only hear of him actually sleeping with two girls. 4. And lastly, he is a bit perfect, he's clever, charming, and talented.... but that's his hamartia. His fatal flaw is that he consistently underestimates others or makes rash decisions because he is so clever. I love it and find it refreshing to read about a clever protagonist. I'm so tired of average Joe's.

The problem with Denna is that despite loving her a great deal, Kvothe isn't really an intimate companion of her. She keeps him at an arms length to protect him from his own foolishness but also something that we haven't seen yet. The matter of Princess Ariel is still to be decided and a runaway princess would be an easy plot thread for her. But tbh I would love for Auri to be the princess with Devi as the runner up. I think of Denna as a red herring meant to distract us from some less emphasized character or even just make us think that she has some significance other than causing Kvothe to act like an idiot. The Kingkiller Chronicle is one of my favorite works of fiction ever. As a film student it's been a valuable resource of insight into storytelling and the nature of stories. There are so many mysteries in the lore in this series but I feel like some of them loop back into the emphasis on the theme of "stories aren't always what they seem". Like how different the stories that Trapis and Scarpi tell about Tehlu and the wildly varying depictions of the Amyr(who seem to be either bureaucrats with swords, paladins, and/or fanatics with a license to kill). The strongest part of the story is how the smallest thing is fleshed out and you get a feel for the world that Kvothe lives in. As a former library page I just loved when they were fruitlessly searching for things in the stacks because of the library wars that were waged in the past.

I don't believe I've come across a fantasy series I've loved so much yet had so many complaints about. The magic system is fantastic and the theory behind Sympathy and Artificery is incredibly well thought out and easy to comprehend, while Naming is more ambiguous it truly feels like a traditional form of magic you would find in other fantasies but with it's own twist. I wholeheartedly agree with many of your complaints though. Kvothe is a Mary Sue (he's a genius, has a photographic memory, strongest Alar among his classmates, fabulous lover despite being a virgin, his troupe skill sets: actor unparalleled musician and songwriter). Despite being so intelligent and capable he is constantly in financial difficulties and makes very poor financial decisions whenever he comes into a small fortune for much of the first two books. His relationship with Denna the awkwardness and not conveying his true feelings is frustrating to read. Kvothe getting dominated in self defense training by a girl believed to be younger than ten, at most a girl described as she was would weigh 75 pounds it's just tough to fathom. Some sections of the books are painstakingly too long: his three years in Tarbean, the Draccus and Kvothe and Denna's adventures in and around Trebon, Fellurian, the hunt for the bandits in the Eld, his stay in Ademre. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed elements of all those story lines (Kvothe's use of Sympathy versus the Bandits in the Eld was well written)but I felt they dragged on too long. Nearly all the sections dealing with life at the University were interesting to me and some of the quotes like "You are not wise enough to fear me as I should be feared. You do not know the first note of the music that moves me." stand only below those of GRRM in fantasy. I loved the first two books of Kingkiller Chronicles despite all of my complaints about them.

I liked wise mans fear more because I loved the cthaeh; and in the audiobook, the voice was perfect too! Creepy, especially after you realize what it can do. I don't think kvothe is too good at everything; he comes across to me as very, very smart; an exaggerated version of some people I've met in real life. To me even if he doesnt have fae blood or some such, I dont think hes too good at everything, but he is clearly very gifted. I like how hes too impatient and quick to anger often; seems like some realistic flaws for a guy like kvothe. I always love when kvothe is angry or giving some kind of threat, but really, sometimes it doesnt seem justify. Really curious how he manages to screw up the world, and if he can do anything to fix it. I could see it being a tragedy with some sorta good news in the end, or a complete tragedy; setting the stage for Pat's next series based in this universe.

How do you not love Denna 😅. Their chapters are the best imo.

As far as Kvothe lying, I noticed how inconsistent he is when he says his age. Not even after his time in the Fae. So I think that's pretty telling that he lies about things right there.
