What happened to Troy? This much-loved time period in ancient Greek mythological history, a period so beloved in another game series, namely Age of Mythology? In this video, I sit down and answer the question of why A Total War Saga: Troy failed the way it did to the best of my ability, bringing up points and facts from both before, during and after the game's launch.

The Trojan War is actually a story from the "Great Bronze Age Collapse" period. I think they should expand the scope and make a game like "Bronze Age Total War" with Hittites, The Sea Peoples and of course ancient Egypt.

one really confusing aspect was the no naval, it is something that CA keeps moving away from, but even this game which is meant to be just a test bed game, they could have used assets from rome 2, with the ships, just make them a bit smaller and more bronze age looking and boom naval is done, it is strange that you got a map of greece that is mostly water yet no naval combat at all, and if they wanted to really go for good points they could have when the myth expansion came out done mithical sea monsters

Can not agree more, Total war: Rome2 is the best video game in Total War series, Troy is a nightmare,I played 8 hours on Steam, too much unnecessary resources, terrible control system, change the public order into the satisfaction, I do not understand why should they do that. In the past,maybe you do not have enough legions, but you can use some strategies to win the war, but not in Troy.
@trevordavis6830
@trevordavis6830 2 года назад
Thing is, naval combat isn't just something that can be added in at a push of a button. Not only is it an entirely different game mode that needs its own AI and core gameplay mechanics, but the ships themselves require vastly more animation/modeling work than units do. So considering Troy was a budget title that still managed to have a pretty buggy and flawed release, I really don't think naval combat was ever going to be something the developers could have added even if they wanted to.
@nitebones1
@nitebones1 2 года назад
@@trevordavis6830 yes and no, yea you have to get the naval ai working, but because troy was build on the same engine as all the other current games, it wouldnt have been too much work to use the assets from rome 2, as in troy era they still used Bireme. all you needed is a coat of paint and some work. execally with the beach landings of rome 2, you could have had a more epic troy map simular to carthage
@Legion12Centurion
@Legion12Centurion 2 года назад
@@trevordavis6830 The problem is that people dont play naval... most autoresolved them in Empire, Napoleon, Shogun 2, Rome 2 and so on. The reason they move away from it is because the few of us who like them and play them isnt worth the cost and time to make them sadly enough. The reason they gave was the low interest in it compared to the time and cost it took them to make it happen. I personally loved the sea stuff in Empire, Napoleon and the beach landing stuff in Rome 2 but I was in a minority.

the game doesnt even have the mechanics/engine to create interesting infantry combat for infantry combat to be interesting you'd need to make positioning, terrain, moral, formations and pushback core mechanics in modern TW game terrain has barely any impact positioning is irrelevant as it devolves into HP blobs that dont care about being rearcharge in the same way gone is moral based combat where skillfull players could achieve army routes meaning the majority of deaths (just as in history) occured after the routing formations have been either gutted or been reduced to magic buffs instead of being properly simulated like in early games out of all these pushback based on unit mass/strength (which would need to be a new mechanic) is the most important aspect to make heavier infantry viable and stop the game from devolving into units just being upgraded versions of each other what the games meta should have been: light infantry for flanking, heavy to push the enemy back and create holes in their battlelines, ranged units to pin enemies down, slower killrate but higher focus on draining stamina and morale, being able to switch out exhausted units, flanking being devasting to morale and defense, having the high ground provides signifacant advantages, forests for cover and ambush, setting fires to force enemies out of burnable terrain, swamps and water slowing enemies significantly, usage of traps and barricades

Great video as always Andy, I see your points. My theory is that CA held back Troy on purpose because of the exclusivity release on Epic. What the heck is a "truth behind the myth"? Myth players would never be happy with a historic ancient game that's slow paced, and historic players is also confused by the myth-focused game mechanics. I think CA deliberately saved the full myth DLC for the Steam release to try and drum up hype, but by then it was too late. Players don't want to pay full price for a 1 year old game on Steam, and free players don't want to pay for the DLC on Epic (players like me). It's a good game otherwise, mythos mode made it very fun and I thoroughly enjoyed the stylized UI design. But a good game ruined by terribad financial decisions. If they hadn't try to have their cake and eat it too and released the Steam version + mythos for maybe $15-20 and the Epic mythos DLC for $5, perhaps the game would have been revived.

You think you want more historical games because of nostalgia but in fact you don't. Even in historical total wars, variety of units is kinda exaggerated and brought to the very extreme. Without some special abilities, fantasy units or spells there is just no way to make battles somehow innovative and interesting and you are left with pure hammer&anvil tactics with a lot of units throughout history not even having a cavalry available. Of course there is some space for innovation in campaign map or maybe they could include a story mode or something, but total war is about battles a lot...

What killed my experience was a lack of roleplay variety - you are almost always either Greek or Trojan, with Amazons/Thracians/Egyptians on the side as one-off factions. Yes, I do play Total War for the strategy, but... I think another big attraction to the series for me is the spectacle + stories you can create within the game that allow your imagination to be swept away. Total War has never really been _that_ complicated a game, it's mostly just a series of juicy experiences that make you feel good (e.g. expanding your empire across the campaign map, doing the perfect cavalry charge that wipes away a tough unit in a battle). The big Total War games that cover a lot of ground - such as Warhammer, Rome, Medieval, Empire - I think were popular for this reason; there were so many ways you could roleplay your campaign experience with a truly diverse range of units that actually felt different rather than just be reskins of a limited type (e.g. it was hilarious to conquer Europe as a Native Indian tribe, or encounter a couple of small as heck galleys from the Barbary States in Empire: TW... yet have them murder your big western ships because they simply had a couple of big ass cannons that tore through you - you had no equivalent to that sort of thing and it was brilliant). I thought the Amazonian + Memnon/Rhesus DLCs were the best they'd done for Troy as it just started to open up the player to the many possibilities that a bronze age-themed Total War title could have given the player and introduce other cultures that were really different from Greeks + Trojans. But even so, you could not really visit their true homelands and conquer them (Thrace + Amazonia were further north-east, and Egypt/Ethiopia/Canaan were further south-east) - the opportunities to roleplay their cultures was extremely limited. Also, their unit rosters weren't all that different either; the unit classes remained mostly intact.

I really enjoy Troy and agree it's an underappreciated gem, but disagree it was a big failure. Compared against the previous entry in the saga series, Thrones of Britannia, Troy got over a year of paid dlc. Thrones got nothing, which suggests it was a sales flop. I would have liked to see a few more lord packs to fill out some empty areas, but the game got more content than I was expecting given the decision to do an epic exclusive. I also want a bronze age total war like you mention towards the end, but I don't think that sort of map expansion towards Mesopotamia was ever in the cards for Troy even if had been an extremely good seller. Who knows, maybe CA will give us a stand alone bronze age historical title.

I agree, Troy really didn't reach its full potential, though I see a different reason why: They fully neglected to implement the main objective of the game (in the default campaign mode). I grabbed it for free and gave Achilles a go. A "proper" way to play him would probably have been to go raid the enemy territories. Except, even for a specialised raiding faction like him, it still doesn't make a lot of sense. You spend several turns to go somewhere, you then get to raid maybe one or two settlements, at which point you'd have to consider going back home, again spending several turns doing so. Meanwhile expanding the same way as you'd do in any other TW is heavily incentivised. As a result, I conquered much of northern Greece, which was a bit too easy. The rest of the coalition, as well as the Trojans, go ahead and sail back and forth and fight each other with neither side making much gains. I still tried to stick to the objectives one gets in the game, as I actually wanted to get the Ilias experience, so I finally sailed over and started raiding, especially given that my hero had the abilities necessary for my troops to regen outside of friendly territory. But it wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped, and the moment where my bubble burst was when I conquered the city Helen was in. I had no idea what to do with her, and after googling realised I couldn't do anything with her. In other words: She wasn't properly implemented in the game except for Paris and Menelaos. This was plain silly, and I stopped playing. On the plus side, I loved several aspects, especially the bronze, stone, wood and gold trading system. They should consider having similar resource systems in all games going forward. I also loved the heroes. I actually liked the semi historical, semi mythological gameplay. For me this wasn't a contradiction, it fits the setting and the source material perfectly. We do have a lot of historical and archeological evidence of the time, and I like them taking the myths and trying to represent them in a grounded way, as many myths do have a grain of truth to them.

You are right, Total war lacks depth to have a meaningful diplomacy system, which is why games like troy and fots that are faction vs faction dont really works and everything but map painting is useless This is even worse with the greek factions, which literally cant leave greece because their faction mechanics dont work

Sure is misleading, but it’s easy to see how unpopular it is compared to other TWs by the amount of Troy content and posts there are out there. Doesn’t mean it’s bad or that people don’t play it, but since we have no other metrics, it’s the only way to somehow compare them. Either way I agree it’s misleading to an extent.

Troy was one of the first big Epic Game Store exclusives and was for free in first day after release. That makes Steam numbers highly misleading. Milions of people got the game for free on another platform and did not buy it elswhere. Of course, only a percent (1% is 75k) of them were relly into it, but that is a lot of players. I still play it on Epic and it was the main reason I even made and Epic account. It was also a Saga title, so smaller in scope by design - and still got a lot of attention and expansions. Compare it with other Saga's (Fall of the Samurai and Thrones of Brittania), not the main titles.

to me it feels like instead of trying to make total war a better experience to play they focus on making it easier to produce. for me keeping the magic ability to just run up to a wall and climb it, either like spiderman like in shogun 2 or magically summoning a giant ladder or grappling hook kind of ruin siege battles that and the throw torches or punch a gate till it breaks. and the fact that they seem set to not bring back naval combat into games or any actually fun and innovative things. empire had issues but at least it introduced a number of new things. naval combat was amazing the scale of the campaign was exciting, the ability to deploy defenses in a field battle or have your troops use stone walls or buildings as cover for firing positions was all great ideas and made battles more dynamic in its way.

Why did it failed so hard? Pulls out list: 1. Epic store, Epic keeps trying to "provide competition" for steam but fails at it MISARABLELY with a inferior store (remember this MODERN GAME STORE didnt even have a shopping cart of all things, EVEN WEDSITES DO THAT) and instead of trying to do better they just POUCH exclusives and give out free games. 2. Truth behind the myth, as noted this mode did not satisfy ANYONE when the game launched, if you going to do something like that, COMMIT TO IT, don't half ass it. Like 3 kingdoms, the "records" mode is considered the most stripped down mode, then Mythos came out and just like 3kingdoms "Romance" mode its considered the best part because it leans into the Troy myths, SPEAKING OF, 3. Mythos pricing, Troy is 40 dollars (fair enough), Mythos which is considered THE BEST PART OF THE GAME is 25 dollars, thats over HALF the price of the game itself. (a total of 65 dollars for JUST THAT). I don't care if they gave this game out for free that is nutz, mythical units and some cosmetic effects to both the map and battle map, really adds to the Troy Myth immersion. But i doubt its worth paying 25 bucks for. 4. Same problems as Warhammer/ modern TW games, Heros are tanky as all hell and can rekt/distract the enemy army while the rest of your troops murder them or pelt them from a distance. Meanwhile your troops really cant deal with heros besides pelting them to death. Also every single city has a ARMY SIZED garrison waiting for you so instead of being a rofl stomp after beating the enemy armies it turns into a SLOG as you siege city after city. 5. Unit Traits, Who though it was a good idea to include traits like "Unflankable"? Let alone "Unflankable" and "Unbrakeable" on the same unit. It really takes away from "using Tactics" against your enemy.

The two big problems with Troy were just what you said - exclusive release on the Epic Game Store for a full year, and the compromise between history and fantasy instead of making either feel truly satisfying. I feel personally that Troy was a game that Creative Assembly did not seem to commit to. When they went with 'Truth Behind the Myth,' that was a little bit of a red flag for me because that sounded like a compromise. I play the game a bunch and even right off the bat, I could see that the game just did not go where I felt as a fan it should have been. If Troy released how it is now, I feel this game would be WAY more favorably viewed by the community that it currently is and/or was. In my mind, if they wanted to do the 'Truth Behind the Myth' idea, they should have went with how Rome Remastered was released where you could pick and choose how you wanted your campaigns to play.

Can you just imagine if we got to play a Bronze Age setting stretching from Libya and the Balkans to Persia and down into Ancient Ethiopia? You could have cool political mechanics for Egypt simulating the power struggle between the Pharaoh(you) and the Priesthood of Amun-Ra. A later expansion start date where you can story mode the rise of Persia with Cyrus the Great. The Sea Peoples invasion. The Exodus from Egypt and founding of Israel-Judah. There was so much potential here for one of the greatest Total War games ever. Oh well I guess. Egypt in this time would really have a late Western Roman Empire feel to it with all the power grabbing, slave revolts, civil wars, etc... It would have been awesome. Some historians label the Bronze Age the "Age of Heroes". Achilles, Agamemnon, Hector, Paris, Mentuhotep II, King Tut, Ramses the Great, Sargon of Akkad, Joshua, David. The list goes on. Many underestimate just how much happened during this time period of history, and how much of it shapes our modern world, and it all ended suddenly and tragically around 1000BC.

I keep coming to these videos for information about this franchise because I know very little and there is nothing in any of them. That’s valid criticism! When I say “mobile like”, what I refer to are menus that are big, with big buttons that you would usually not need for a mouse pointer - but one you would definitely need for a finger to click efficiently on. In my opinion, this kind of UI hampers the experience became 1, I find they rarely feel as full of love as “older”, more complex UIs, and 2, they tend to not make the best use of the screen space in my opinion, being either too big or too slow to move around for me. Hope that clears things up a little!

@@AndysTake Okay well thanks for clearing that up. People use it a lot in the gaming industry as a very negative and often unfair term for so many different things it often means nothing. Larger UI is a valid thing to point out although wouldn't you think that a larger UI (wish a scaler) would please more people? Since most people have poor eye sight and some play on a larger display further away. Assuming of course it is just a larger UI and not a small UI with a lot of crap which wouldn't please anyone.

A historical type title in the Warhammer engine just doesn’t work. The hit boxes are all wonky for normal size units 🤷‍♂️

I don't like hero units in total war. I'd rather have them have like bodyguards so they operate like a powerful unit or just not have the general playable in battles

For starters, every game, book and film out there completely slaughters the Greek history and mythology. Iliad despide having mythological beings in it (I.e. the gods) in an attempt explain events, the events themselves are real and not made myth. There are numerous amount of factions in the Iliad, the Acheans and their allies and the Iliads and their allies. Heroes galore from both sides. Just stick to the book man, is all there for you. It is the best history novel ever written. I rate it above The Lord of the rings. They put so much effort in Warhammer so it can be done. They could have included the politics and intrigues and all that jazz. It could have been like Rome II but thousands of years earlier.

i’m still playing on epic games because i don’t want to repurchase the game. did you account for those players when using that stat?

@@misterlove7895 I will partly agree. I think it's just because everything has been ported from previous games and the new factions really aren't that interesting to me when we have other factions that are just better. They're missing the opportunity to add more and really haven't done much with what they have

Those steam numbers are going to be quite skewed. Not only is Troy a much smaller game than Rome II (which has amazing mods at this point) and a more limited appeal, but Epic had Troy for free on the first day. I bet that there are a lot of players (like myself) that picked it up on Epic instead of steam because of that.

Tbf Troy released for free on Epic, so I doubt many people who got it for free like me, bought it on Steam as well, but yeah I wouldn't be surprised if that only adds 300 players at best to the 24/current peaks

You forget to mentioned copy-paste castles. Almost every city looks the same in the game. Meanwhile when you looked to Warhammer 1 every city-castle-town has a uniqiue design representing the culture and stuff.

The price is to high, that is why I don’t buy it. A shame as it is one of the most beautiful of CA’s games. I would pay $20-$25 but no more for the whole package.

I dunno if it failed... thats a point of perspective I guess. Who did it fail for a part of the player base or for the company? It was downloaded 7.6 millions and sold... for money about 3.6 or so million copies. Epic paid a ton of money for it and they then got revenue from the sold ones. In the annual reports they where happy about it and the release on Epic. I think they made a good profit considering the production cost was probably lower than a standard TW product. I also think it was a fun, enjoyable Total War with good battlempas, interesting improvements for diplomacy and a resource system. The time period was also great. The addition of the myth stuff later was just icing on the cake for me. I probably was one of the few who liked this middle ground stuff. But im glad they added the two other modes and I prefer myth since the historical records arent so many and reliable of this time period. Many of the characters might not even have existed in real life. Anyhow Troy is the strongest Saga title and I doubt it was an economical failure for CA. Maybe it was seen as a failure for some parts of the fanbase as you point out in the video. It would be nice to see how many play the Epic version daily since it was downloaded so much.
