A business owner from CT told us about how his company didn't lay off anyone during the 2008 recession. Instead they cut payroll and let their employees know that they had no idea when they would go back to their normal salaries, but they were doing the best they could to get by. By 2010, they were on top of all of their competitors and able to give raises compared to the pre-recession salary. The spanish flu only lasted 2 years, and given COVID had a much lower mortality rate, it is moronic to think there wouldn't be some airlines that planned on demand returning to 2019 levels within a year or two. It's so expensive to retrain employees and even more so for pilots, so why airlines don't try other strategies besides laying off and early retirement just boggles my mind.

@@reimei84 The actual problem is that there are significantly more subsidies for airlines and busses, than there are for trains. Trains are on the hook for almost all of their costs: tracks, routine maintenance, staff and training, and safety. In turn they can’t afford to upgrade quickly or be more efficient, so of course they end up “sucking” in comparison when everyone else has Uncle Sam’s help. The airline industry has actively and successfully lobbied against trains, particularly high-speed trains, for decades to incentivize flying and monopolize it for long-distance continental travel. The fact they’re using busses now is a slap in the face with their history of limiting consumer transportation options.

America has the largest rail network. So like Russia is bigger but has less tracks but it’s known to have very efficient rail. China is similar size to US, has way less track, and transports 3x as much stuff. So sure maybe it’s easier for communist countries to organize the scheduling but if the un-united countries of Europe can manage then surely the United started can too? like you can go train from the UK to Switzerland to Finland - Hells I think you can leave the Schengen (European) area and it’s actually possible to catch a train from UK to India - granted there might be a ferry and a few dicey layovers but it’s possible…. Because the U.S. has the most major metropolitan areas of any nation on Earth. These places are evenly dispersed from one end of the country to the other. Hire Russian pilots, most of them will be twiddling their thumbs soon enough as the industry runs out of spare parts for those hijacked planes.

Maybe if the system for becoming an airline pilot wasn’t absolute shit, where people have to struggle to get flying hours with little or no pay then these airlines wouldn’t have these shortages now.
@ericcarabetta1161

It would help if the airline CEOs didn't just give all the bailout money to themselves as bonuses and then cry that they can't find pilots (because they refuse to pay pilots enough).

Here in canada we normaly run busses between cities not unlike a greyhound. Kinda funny that american flight companies are getting into the business of bussing. Makes sense though since alot of states don't have good long distance land travel other than taking your car. Good to have redundancy!
