Argentina is an incredible country in so many ways. From the beating economic heart of Buenos Aires in the north, to the pure beauty of the Patagonian mountains and Tierra Del Fuego archipelago in the south. But despite the natural beauty of the south, the vast majority of Argentinians (about 41 million people) have opted to live in the northern half of the country, leaving a relatively scant 6 million people to inhabit the entire south.
So why don't more Argentinians live in the southern half of the country? And why does Argentina continue to claim the Falkland Islands as their own?

As an Argentinian, I don't consider Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area as part of the North and, in your map, it is just in the limit between North and South. If you ignore the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, the rest of Argentina is mostly empty with pockets of population that rarely exceed a million people. So while the facts stated in this video are correct, they are clearly misleading.

Hi, an Argentine here and fan of this channel. Great video, I liked it, but I have some notes to amplify the information: -Patagonia is very underpopulated not only because its weather (the main reason of course), but also because it was incorporated later to the country unlike the north. They took part of the country since the 1880 decade (this isn't the case of Malvinas Islands tho). However in the last couple of decades, the patagonian provinces have been the ones that have grown the most in porcentual terms. Tierra del Fuego has particularly grown in a 50% between 2010 and 2022 census. They are still the most underpopulated ones of course, but they are going in a good way. -The contrast in population goes mainly between the full pampean region (Provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe and Entre Rios, and the City of Buenos Aires) with 30 million of people (almost 66% of the country's population) and the rest of the country with 16 million. La Rioja and Catamarca are also very underpopulated provincies (300k and 400k people respectively) like the Patagonia, but this two are located in the north west of the country. -Mar del Plata is located in the coast, in the extreme south east of Buenos Aires Province. -I think you exposed well in a respectful and correct way both official positions related with Malvinas Islands (generaly north americans and europeans are limited to show or explain only the British position) which is fine. I just would like to add in the world map, that all Latin American countries supports the Argentinian position in the claim. Nonetheless I would like to recognize in the good sense the fact that you mentioned Operation Condor, an atrocious historical event that generally is omitted by people from North America or Europe. I have great respect for you for that.

Geoff, something similar happens in the Midwest USA (Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, etc.), and of course in Canada. Patagonian hinterland areas have several weather constraints in winter, reaching -10F. However, in 1983 there was a project to move the country's Capital to Viedma by the Rio Negro and the sea, as Brazil did in the 50's with Brasilia to set sovereignty in their Mata Atlantica hinterland.

If Buenos Aires is the largest city and is right on the border between the north and the south, I would think whether it counts as a northern or southern city also greatly contributes to why so many ore people are in the North, i.e. it is mostly a matter of definition.
@user-xu3bg7zh9c
@user-xu3bg7zh9c 17 дней назад
the place where he place the division line is wrong. The region oficially considered as "the south" is like 1/3 of the country, Buenos Aires is the most populated province (its shaped as the letter "P") and the city of Buenos Aires (capital of both, the province and the country) is at the north of said province. He pointed the city of Buenos AIres as "the north" but the whole province is located in what we consider "the center" of the country. The most populated part of the country (where the provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Santa Fe are located) is simply considered "the center". The part we consider as "the north" is also wrongly marked here, as it would be about 20% of the country or so (its... the part on top of the center, lol). There are a lot of regions, but to be very simplistic just think of it as divided in 3 instead of 2 like he did in the video, the most populated part is not the north, but the middle one. If you imagine it as a videogame map, the south would be snow, the middle would be green plains, and the north would be desert and mountains lol.

As an argentinian, nice video! Just two minor mistakes: 1) Mar del Plata is located on the coast of BsAs Province, no inland. 2) Neuquén population is approximately triple than the video claims (~720 k)

3:15 even there was an initiative to recognize Italian, German and Welsh as co-official languages and French as a compulsory subject in schools, but only Welsh was recognized as co-official in the province of Chubut. In the 90s,Italian ,German and French coexisted in different institutes (French in business institutes and elementary schools, Italian and German in technical institutes), but educational reforms proclaimed English as a foreign language subject. So now Italian , Portuguese or French are subjects in tourism courses (but usually only Portuguese is obligatory) and Hochs is only taught in German schools.

Thanks for the great deep dive. 1. I knew it. Those darn mountains are part of the answer. 2. I recommend Geoff's excellent take on Chile, Argentina's western neighbor. Southern South America is called Patagonia, 10%/90%. It's like if one placed 10 shoelaces side to side. Chile would be the first one. One would guess all ten shoelaces had similar climates. Please guess why not. Hint only for non-Geoff subscribers: mountains. I always wondered why Prince weirdly titled a song as 'Mountains'. As always, Geoff answered my wonder. 3. Saudia Arabia is building a linear city in the desert. The planners should be talking to Argentina and especially Chile how they manage such lopsided countries. Chile is shaped like legs of Brooks Shields and Uma Thurman if they fasted for three months. a) Noem is the linear city that is 1,000 times east to west than it is north to south. b) It's going to be a 20 to 30 storied apartment building that will be a 1/2 city block continuing to go for 100 miles, climate change neutral. c) Even Geoff would have difficulty convincing the most gullible that this is being built. d) The planners admit that some technology is nowhere practical. e) It's like paying one million upfront for a one-way ticket to Mars in 2028. Flying on Musk Spaceways.

Not only is the south of Argentina unpopulated, but the entire west of the country as well. The population (+70%) is concentrated in the Pampas area, in the center-east of the country near the Atlantic. This is because they are dry and arid regions and there was never immigration in those regions. and finally, the part that says NORTH is not right. You are mixing regions.

Great video. Only criticism I'd make is that you drew the north/south divide too far "up"; Mar del Plata and Mendoza are still in a populated and livable area, so the line could be somewhere south Bahia Blanca to Neuquén. Note apart, Rosario and Cordoba are never considered part of the North, but Central area; and you made too many simplifications in the geographical part.

Talking about waves of migration in the late industrial age you omit the huge Cornish and Welsh dispora especially around Chebut Provincia who moved there after the metal mining in North Wales (Gogledd Cymru)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and Cornwall (Kernow) this gives Argentina the distinction of having one of the largest Welsh/Cornish speaking communities outside of the Brythonnic world. I also note you didn't include Las Islas Malvinas in your boundary of Argentina. That said the 1982 conflict of sovereignty was also part of the dirty war to distract the public from domestic issues. Both Galtierri and Thatcher pushed the flag waving agenda to distract from social unrest domestically and as usual the USA sat on the fence instead of trying to broker peaceful resolution. The main reason the British far right government since 2010 maintains the claim on the Falkland Islands is the fishing and mineral rights. And that's what annoys China and Russia since Chinese vessels rarely get fishing licences and Russia is unhappy about potential gas and oil extraction by Western nations brokered through the UK Government. The other reason the Falkland Islands are kept is servicing Antarctic Territory and for Military Strategy purposes. With Mount Pleasant Airport [MPN] a ready made airbase for NATO-OTAN and other allied forces and plenty of deep water to 'hide' V-Class (and New Dreghtnought) ICBM capable submarines. The irony is joint sovereignty deals between UK and Argentina were started to be brokered by Chile in the 1970's but nothing came of it and now Stanley is officially a UK city it's unlikely anything will come to the table especially whilst UK is in an economic mess and overstretching military needs to other conflicts. I have it direct from Chileans I work with that Chile 🇨🇱 is pronounced ChillE by natives.

As a Swede, this reminds me of my home country in quite many ways. Our North is also sparsely populated, but critical since it harbors vast quantities of natural resources. I don't know too many details, but much of it was effectively colonized from the local Sami people, which is a dark stain on our history, with some consequences being felt to this day. Keep up the good work, would be cool if you did an episode on Sweden!

I think that the data from the last National Census of 2022 must be taken into account, which indicates that the Federal Capital (CABA) has 3,120,612 inhabitants, while Greater Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires suburbs or AMBA) has 10,865,182 inhabitants, while that within the Province of Buenos Aires there are 6,703,871. The rest divided into different capitals of the rest of the provinces, with a total population of 46,044,703 inhabitants... throughout the country... To truly understand the idiosyncrasy of a country, we must understand how its population is distributed. That determines part of their customs. I.e. what's REALLY causing the US border crisis is blow back from Condor operations in Central America designed to destabilize Left-Wing Paramilitary movements and governments and the drug cartels that use the power vacuum left behind to rob nations of their dignity and security... Most people don't even know about this project much less how it STILL shapes Geopolitical conflicts in 2024...
