Good points. I think the learning curve is similar to learning a language. At first you learn a lot, because your "pockets" are empty. Then you slow down and reach a point where you think you are not learning. You may even think you are "unlearning". To follow up with the language analogy you may think you can't speak your own language properly nor the new one. But in reality you are just learning small things, making subtle adjustments that are out of the reach of a newbie or an intermediate learner. That leads to perfection and before you know it, you are doing complex stuff without even thinking or trying. Or you are dreaming, thinking and getting jokes in your new language. "Be safe, but also send it" can't agree more.

I stopped skating in the late 80’s. Started again at 45 yo . The enjoyment I get is not only in progression but the freedom in my head. When you skate there can be no other mental influence on the trick you are working on. To me I don’t look at progression as landing as many new tricks as possible. Getting a lot better at the simple ones is also progressing. This is for the old farts out there. For me doing a front board slide on a rail is looking death in the face every time but I can’t help doing it over and over. As a young kid go nuts but as an older dude be great full that you can still do something on that piece of wood.

@adrianbaguley32 I agree with you. I was absent from skating since 1997 and relearning/recouping the motions and tricks is oh so refreshing to the mind, body, and soul. Well, the body, more specifically the connective tissues, have had their challenges since coming back but it's been so enjoyable.

You are not that old. People skateboard after 60s, 70s. I got back after 15 years break. Only skated for half season..

When you started off with the existential question "why do we skate?," I felt that is probably the most important point. Part is acceptance- every skater is given certain portions of talent in certain areas (mental, physical, grace, endurance, patience/persistence, etc etc)- and when you hit a wall (figuratively haha) understanding and accepting your limitations is key and what will allow you to move forward. For example, "yeah, I recognize that I may not be as talented as skater X- but I think I'm willing to put in the extra time skating that I would need to reach the level I want- or maybe you're not willing etc etc). And when you look at it that way, you can be more at peace with whatever decision you take- because you understand what is happening and why you do what you do. Plus you know understanding where you want to go- and how you want to get there is key. I, for example, can appreicate- but don't care much for the technical ability of someone - I'm more interested, say, in something like Limosine skateboards- and like their new video that dropped. That is the direction I would put my skating- rather than some SLS corporate souless bullshit-

Wow, you did not disappoint. Appreciate your videos, and this one in particular was a very useful one to hear. It atleast affirms the approach I was kind of trying to take, and is great advice for learning to skateboard.

Most skaters don't continuously progress. They reach a certain level and stay stalled out there for the rest of their skateboarding days.

I think it depends how much drive you have. You can continuously progress so as you put the hours in.

@@andrewdean7705agreed. I plateaued a little after I started again and then just started learning everything a lot faster because I immersed myself with info and practiced the things I learned daily
