This is the main reason as to why cycling is a European dominated sport, even with all the natural recourses American cyclists still have a hard time placing podium on international races.

I completely agree that the biggest issues in the U.S. are culture and cost. Culturally cycling competitively isn’t seen as something youth do and thus it is hard to even find a place to start. On top of that the culture of sports in general in America is a money grab. In Europe sports academies are offered either low cost or for free being subsidized by a pro team meanwhile in the U.S. you would have to fork over tens of thousands of dollars a year just to compete at a high level in any sport. Even if the sports culture in America shifts to lowering the cost for families, it will still be hard for cycling as there aren’t really any big teams or sponsors to help fund youth cycling. Unfortunately unless there is a big jump in viewership of races in the U.S. I don’t see a future where American cyclists would be able to develop to be competitive on the international stage.

@@Catandheadphones It didn't take long to see that riding at a higher level was not rewarded as much as just being able to enter the race. There were quite a few of us who could be in the top ten who would not rise in points compared to the kid who could afford to race anywhere and any day!

@@ronbell7920I completely agree. Sports in general in the US are pay-to-win where 9 times out of 10 a kid who is worse but has parents with more money will be able to compete at a higher level than a kid who is slightly if not decently better.

I think another big reason is cost. Regular people I know (non-cyclists) think a $699 bike is way too expensive and that's nothing in the cycling world.

Are you serious ? Average American income is probably three times an average European one.

I also live in North Carolina. I would love to go pro in cycling, but I'm not exactly sure how to start or what to join.

Cycling is an expensive sport! Paying the race fees, supporting ones own travel expenses, plus the cost of the kit. It doesn't take long to realize that there is no money to support the talent. The rich kid whose parents can afford to help him out are the only talent that the US has to offer.

Unless you are 12 or younger or an athletic freak of nature, it's already too late for you.
