Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is among the busiest airport in the world, but the city that it is in, Amsterdam is not even in the top 10 most populated cities in Europe, yet the airport manage to have millions of passengers every year competing with massive cities like London and Paris.

Eindhoven airport has many low cost routes all across Europe, in addition, both Eindhoven and Rotterdam have charter flights during summer. Main reason for why AMS is so busy is many connections and transit passengers who don't even leave the airport

Well, many municipalities like Duivendrecht, Hoofddorp, Diemen, Aalsmeer etc are nearer than Amsterdam to Schiphol airport. And these municipalities when combined are around 250K+ population. And if we take 1 hour from Schiphol then it has as much population as London

It’s a true shame that the government wants Schiphol to shrink and lose its current position while the countries around us move on and grow their airports. One thing I’d like to mention about the video is that there’s 3 other airports in the country with international flights of which one is in the north (Groningen, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Maastricht). They do have flights outside Europe too (Turkey, Morocco etc). The difference with Schiphol is that they don’t have long haul flights :)

@georghuppertz5727 as a flight traveler I am not sure I would like to travel by train instead of plane to catch another flight.... if there is a delay with the train I would miss the second flight without any compensation, if the first flight is delayed the airline simply rebook my second flight, i do not want the inconviniences of carrying 3 luggage from train station to airport, stress about waiting time at luggage drop off and securitiy check lines at an airport I do not know well etc etc.... i do agree that trains should replace flights everywhere where it is reasonable but combining longer train trips with flights can work only if the train trip is also covered by the same airline as the flight before/ after to achieve similar level of comfort and I do not think that this will happen anytime soon

Used to fly via AMS and its a great airport for traveling. This video has a few misses. First Netherlands is in Schengen and many people outside Amsterdam will go to other countries to fly such as Brussels. Next as part of KLM is their partnership with Delta airlines. Delta has turned Amsterdam into a massive hub and has flights to Amsterdam throughout the US. Given its geography Amsterdam is a great connecting airport for North American travelers going to Europe, Africa, and even certain parts of Asia.

Exactly. De Randstad is a metropolitan area which covers (most of) the western part of the country. For the rest of the country, it depends which airport is closer. 36% Of passengers at Schiphol are transfers. This is because Schiphol is the KLM hub. They collect passengers throughout Europe and transfer them to long haul flights and visa versa. For example, there are no direct flight from JFK to Lyon, but there is a direct KLM flight between AMS and JFK, followed by a AMS to LYS flight. The transfer point of this journey is Schiphol. The same is for Athens, Greece. There is no ATH to EZE (Buenos Aires). There is however a ATH to AMS and a AMS to EZE. KLM has also strong connections with hubs in Asia. Airlines use KLM as parter, to get people from the Netherlands to Singapore, followed by a connecting flying on Lion Air e.g.

So many things wrong in this video. Saying that there are no commercial airports in the north (waving at you Groningen Eelde) or further south (hello Maastricht Aachen Airport) is BS. Apart from that, a lot of people in the east and south travel to airports on the other side of the border because of good and direct connections (Weeze, Düsseldorf, Bonn-Cologne, Brussels and Brussels South) so they don't use Schiphol in the first place. Next to that the most important thing is missing; the reason why Schiphol is so busy is because of it's role in the intercontinantal hub-and-spoke principle thanks to mainly KLM and the partnerships it has struck in the past decades. This has made Schiphol a major base for flights in and out of Europe to other continents and therefor it is a huge transit airport. About 35-45% of the annual passenger numbers (71M) are having a transfer on Schiphol, so don't go in or out from the Netherlands. And that is what makes Schiphol such a major airport compared to it's humble location.

So all three cities. And we flew out of Schiphol. Amsterdam is great! It has a real small town, countryside feel. Another thing you overlooked is the days of the Dutch Empire. All of the Dutch colonies around the world led to the start of KLM. And of course, the VOC. The Dutch East India company. And Royal Dutch Shell. For a "small country" the Netherlands has a worldwide presence. Like France and Britain and (UGH!) America. Here where I live on the East Coast of Canada there was a KLM ticket office. Amsterdam to Toronto and the return flight was Toronto-Halifax-Amsterdam. To load seafood on the return was the story. It was like that for a few years but they closed the KLM office here. I'm bummed about that.

London Heathrow runs at full capacity, so if there's any kind of weather problems the delays get really bad, something to consider if you're connecting there from Scotland. Schipol doesn't have this problem so much, definitely better hub airport for Scotland than the London airports for thus reason alone.

London is served by 6 airports. You should add them together. Also you should add the southeast of England to compare to Netherlands as a city

There are only 3 airports that serve London (in this sense Greater London) actually. The other 3 other airports are fake as they are all painfully far from London itself Worst of all is London Ashford which is much closer to Calais (FRA) than London itself

Many people in the east and south use the many airports across the border in Germany and Belgium. If those people would switch to AMS, it'll probably be number one in Europe 😅

A lot of Germans also fly from Amsterdam because it has more transatlantic flights than the Düsseldorf airport in the far West of Germany. And it is easter to get to than Munich or Frankfurt from the Düsseldorf, Rhine and Ruhr region....

This airport is the definition of a nightmare. Crowded, understaffed and inefficient. Avoid it at all costs unless you have many hours to waste and the patience of a saint. You will need both.
