If the model 3 had a proper boot hatch like the y I bet people would have the 3 over the y.

I really like the M3, for me it’s a better size, cheaper and has better range, the fact it’s not a hatchback is a real disappointment.

In my opinion the mg 4 is a hatch, zs is a crossover and the hs is an suv and obviously the 5 is an estate

I had an original 2015 Leaf and I'm getting a new Niro in October and out of curiosity I compared their sizes - there's a few millimetres between them. The Niro is basically a slightly tall hatchback with SUV styling which I'm not keen on, but then I'll be on the inside, so it doesn't affect me that much.

I like the higher seating position and better view ... so had a string of LR/RR & Disco over the years and towed our horses & motorcycles. Plus I like to load things like wardrobes and fridges. Now we are of an age where getting down into or hauling up from low seating cars is a pain. So we have the Volvo XC40 EV and may go down a size next year to the Volvo EX30. We also need ground clearance - my last Jaguar and our runabout VW Golf used to bottom on on speed humps
@andyjdhurley
@andyjdhurley 11 месяцев назад
Totally agree with this. I currently drive a Suzuki Vitata which actually is AWD but the main reason is better ground clearance to deal with pot holes and driveways in rural north Essex. It's also better when the roads flood (as they do now several times a year). The higher driving position is much appreciated as I get older and the AWD means I can generally get out of a muddy field ('car parks' for events are generally exactly that) without help. I also tow a small trailer quite a bit and the e-Niro I looked at was not certified and way too expensive anyway so I am stuck with the Vitara now for at least another 5 years. When my wife and I go away for a short break we fill the Vitara and a roof box so luggage space is also a key issue.

I think a lot of people make the mistake of calling a crossover an suv, its a crossover because its a cross between a hatch and an suv

As others have mentioned in the comments already, there are multiple benefits of Model Y over 3. Firstly, they occupy the same area on the road so aren’t any more (or less) difficult to park/manoeuvre. Secondly, considering how much more spacious, it’s really not that much less efficient. Thirdly, the rear seats are considerably more spacious for adults, with significantly more thigh support. Finally, the boot is way more practical, with the hatch opening. The only noteworthy downside is that it’s less attractive than the Model 3 (IMO).

First successful SUV. TOYOTA RAV4. Useless across country but high seating position made it a nice car to drive in the town. Also when the weather was poor, deep water or a few inches of snow it gave you lots of confidence. I had the mark1. Short wheel base and very secure on the road.

This weekend my Santa Fe will be carrying the family camping, bikes on the roof, dogs in the boot and caravan on the back. That's why I traded my old 307 for a 4x4. I needed something that could do so much more. Earlier today I took my daughter shopping, in a Renault Zoe, less than 10 miles journey. The Zoe is charged overnight on cheap rate electricity and is way cheaper to run per mile than the Santa Fe. Just got to bit about streaming. Only one I have is Prime and I get that for the unlimited photo storage, the monthly Prime subscription is far cheaper than a dedicated online storage service.

Just one more thing... defining a SUV. I saw a Twitter post a few months ago where someone was banging on about banning SUVs. Hundreds of likes, numerous supporting tweets. I asked them for a clear definition of what an SUV is, one that can be objectively applied against any car to decide if it should be banned. Absolutely not one person answered. I also challenged another tweet, relating to the school crash in London, in which the poster called the Defender involved a "killing machine". I pointed out a family car that was longer, wider and heavier than a Defender and had almost identical scores in the Euro NCAP ratings and asked why they wanted the Defender banning but not the family car. Again, no answer.

MG5 is still my car of choice, because of the room in the back. But if Vauxhall were to make an electric Chevette hatch-back, that would serve ok. I don't need the back seat, so that is just dead weight and a waste of space. I modified my old petrol Chevette, so the shotgun seat bolts were inside out, and with butterfly nuts on the inside, - so I could take the seat out in three minutes - great for going camping! - - - As you get older and stiffer, a taller car is easier to get into and out of, where a 'sports' type is so low you struggle! (and if the parking space is next to a tall kerb!!!!!) - - - Multiple cars would be great if you could have one tax and one insurance that was for both, because most people only drive one at a time - but to have to tax/insure a bigger car that you might use three times a year is financially OTT - so they have to have the big car that is used all year round for one or two people! - - - - As I've put many times before, I need a car that can carry long, light, fragile things, at least once a week. At the moment I have a van, but am penalised because it is classed as a commercial vehicle, even though it is not used commercially!

I’m single, had two cars for many many years - usually my 1996 Defender 90 and a Range Rover Sport. 2020 I changed the last RRS for a New Defender 110 alongside my 90…….. shock horror the New Defender couldn’t get under the barriers into any local car parks. So I test drove then ordered a Mini Cooper S E (the electric one) - 1 guy, 3 cars! I sold my pride and joy with a lot of added offroad character 1996 Def last August and now the Mini that was bought as a 2nd car gets waaaaaaay more use than the New Defender which sits on the drive most of the week between Greenlane runs, offroad days and the 3 times a year I need more than 100 miles range like my annual road trips to Norway which would be a major pain in the Mini so it gets a rest for a month then! Now I have a 2023 Defender 90 D250 and the Mini. Mini is way more practical and city friendly even though I live out in the sticks 25 miles from the nearest big town. I don’t understand “crossovers” though and I wouldn’t call my 90 an SUV either……….because it isn’t by any measure a practical car. I cannot wait for an electric Defender to come out though.

We just got a Kona Electric as well to replace a Skoda Karoq. The Karoq was a great car but a tad too big for my wife. When we got solar it we decided it was time to get an EV & charge it from home. The Kona is a great combination of compact size & is easy to get in & out of which is becoming more of an issue as we get older!

I had a golf and a t-roc as company cars. The t-roc has the same floor pan and basic space of the golf but not the build quality you used to expect from VW. The t-roc clutch disintegrated after 2000 miles. I drive an MG5 now, better build than a T-roc and much more practical.

Being 6'2" tall and having a bad neck that does not bend and SUV style car has been so much easier for me to get in and out of. Also living in a rural areait is great to be able to see above some of the hedges. The overall size is also much easier for my son, who is the same height as me, to sit in rear seats. I drive the Kia E Niro 4+ and love the car. Previously had an Audi Q5 but it was too big for most public car parks. Niro is about Q3 sized and I must be honest I have not missed the Audi. It is also big enough to work for holidays and trips. I am looking at MG 4, but it is more difficult to get into, MGZS, BYD Atto 3 for next year as I want to keep below the crazy 40k luxury car tax. I also must say the term SUV is now covering such a range of cars and previously meant the large cars, but now seems to include anything with a taller roof. Is a Kia Niro or similar sized car actually a hatchback or SUV? And one final point, my wife will not drive my car as she feels it is too big and prefers a Corsa or Polo sized car.

Still waiting for an "affordable" large Estate EV to come along to replace my Superb Estate i.e. bigger than the MG5 / Astra / 308 which at best are medium estates. TBH I don't think any new car or EV is affordable any more which is why I have only bought used cars for the last 25 years.

My wife has a Skoda Yeti; she likes the higher seating and driving position, the hatch rather than a boot. Also, we're getting to old for the 2-seater convertable sports car 😢 Having liver in the US it became clear that Mom picking up the kids at school (if they weren't using the school bus) wanted the biggest "safest" car. Also, can you guys set up a crash test, in the style of Top Gear, where one of the vehicles is a Chevrolet Suburbanand the other is a Smart. Then take a poll as to which vehicle your viewers would rather be in.

We made the move from a Ford Fiesta to a Ford Puma and it was primarily because of the interior space. I'm 6ft 5" tall and the Fiesta felt cramped whereas the Puma has given that extra space that I really needed. It was tiring on a long journey in the Fiesta but the Puma makes it a lot more bearable. The extra boot space is also noticeable when carrying extra luggage, dog etc. For me it's practicality.

I have had saloons in the 90's followed by a Passat, Mondeo and Accord (all estates). I then went onto a Sorento in 2009 (worst car I have ever owned). Then had two mk3 Honda CRV's a i-CTDI and i-DTEC. They were both brilliant. But after selling the caravan I went back to a Passat estate (B8), followed by a Skoda Karoq (T-Roc sister). I grew to hate it to be honest, and the handling was not a patch on my CRV's. I have a 21 Ioniq Premium SE 38 on lease which should have gone back last week when my new Civic hybrid arrived. The leasing company offered me such a ridiculous price per month to keep it for another 12 months, I have.

Positions 2, 4, 5, 6 at the half year mark in Europe are all hatchbacks? Top selling car in Germany the Golf, France the Clio, Italy the Panda, Spain the Sandero. I thought the reason SUVs were being pushed so much and small hatches being pulled was due to the tight margins on small cars. A little bit why touchscreens are becoming the norm and tactile buttons beung dropped (profit) despite the ergonomic superiority. Still, my wifes SUV is way better over the terrible roads around here compared to my low slung estate.

I think there are two factors driving the popularity of SUV's/ crossovers. One is simply consumer demand driven by what is fashionable and has nothing to do with price or praciticality. As far as manufacturers are concerned it is clearly easier to get a reasonably large battery and with it greater range into the SUV format even though it is less efficient than an equivalent saloon or estate car. A case in point about fashion is the new LR Defender compared to its predecessor. Can you see anyone loading a couple of muddy labradors three brace of pheasants in the bqack and then climbing in to the driving seat with muddy boots on? apart from that where do you put the gun rack? I can't see any utility provider buying them fitted with a cherry picker. Tnhe Defender is now simply a fashion accesory. Also seen today an Aston Martin SUV. OK but Rolls Royce SUV Bentley SUV Lamborghini SUV. What's that all about, next we will have a Morgan crossover and a Ferrari SUV!

Is there actual evidence on how much safer an SUV may or may not be to a smaller car? Remember an SUV is heavier so more weight on impact particularly on high speed impacts. Remember the Americans have no medieval roads or towns with narrow roads with buildings 1000+yrs old, can only imagine the prison time and fine for damaging a heritage listed 1000+yr old building in some massive American SUV. I have heard that in New York City they have banned large SUV's/Pickups from their multi-story carparks be they electric or ICE. Problem with outside schools is them running their disgusting carcinogenic diesel/petrol SUV's in idle like idiots that is separate to the size issue as well. Mind you those kids should ride their bikes, like Denmark/Netherlands/etc where it's far healthier for these kids I rode or walked to school as a kid why the change to these soccer Mom's(and Dad's) as in helicopter parenting. Destroys kids independence as an adult. Single parent families only have one car so it has to fit both short & long range, myself in that category have the original Ioniq 28kWh and do long & short(there is charging infrastructure that is reliable).

You need more head room, easy in-out and cargo space? Get a freaking (mini) van, then, for heaven's sake. But they are only for "soccer moms" and for people who gave up on life, right? Heck, Mercedes Class A (gen 1 and 2) has excellent comfort getting in and out, high floor (for those with the knee and hip problems in the comments) and more than decent head room. And it's not actually a van in the classic sense of the word. "But it's uuuugly!" says the mob. So, in the end it's not about practicality, is it? It's about extending your "pee pee", isn't it (wink, wink)? For me, SUVs or crossovers are much like an American house or a film prop - it's all fake and an "imitation", but not the real deal. An authentic impostor (or it's imposter?) in all senses of the word.

One of the reasons for SUV’s is that the battery can be put in the floor and still keep the passenger cell size the same. As for larger (European) cars much of it is due to safety and all the gubbins in the doors etc. Modern Polo is the same size or bigger than the original Golf for example. And manufactures massively influence what we buy including body style to suite them and profit.
