This has always been my core collecting niche off and on. After I saw this video, I went and scoured my LCS’s unpriced long boxes. Lo and behold there was an Adventures of Superman 492 3rd print with no spine tics! They price using eBay sold listings. They quoted me a price of $3. It’s a Festivus miracle! Thanks so much for what you do.

I worked at a comic book store in San Diego in the early 90s, all thru the runs of Knightfall and Death of Superman. Those platinum editions, I believe, were retailer incentive books based on the number of copies of the normal comic our shop ordered. So yes, they tend to be pretty rare, with some shop keepers simply stashing their copy away or some selling them at a high premium. My guess is that they have very small print runs, under 5000 copies each.

I have a rather large put together collection of some of those DC logo variants and a few of those newsstand and later printings for Superman 75.

I was so very wrong in the 90's. I always went for a direct edition over a newstand because I felt like the artwork was cleaner without the UPC, and I considered anything but a first print to be totally worthless. I should have taken George Costanza's advice and whatever my instinct is, do the opposite. 🙂

Glad you mentioned that Green Lantern #51 DC Universe Logo 2nd Print. For some reason everyone seems to think that that book just having the DC Universe logo makes it the second print and I have to keep telling everyone it's not. You have to have that Roman numeral II underneath the price in the corner box for it to be that rare version. Which of course I happened to have found in my collection from when I was a kid. Oh and I think you might have just mentioned my copy of Flash #92 DC Universe Logo edition that I have listed on eBay, it's a 9.6. Thanks for the great video.

90s books scare me over $200 when there are so many fantastic books i still dont have from Silver and Bronze.

Got a mid grade action comics 686 for a couple bucks at a shop and later found out it was the dcu logo variant. Was pretty excited

So why are some subsequent printings more top dollar than other subsequent printings? Is it because some subsequent printings are low print runs and some are not low print runs?

Hi James, this was very enjoyable, thanks for the time you spent on research for this video. There was a time in the 1980s and early 90s when fans would steer clear of second and subsequent printings - they would only be purchased as reading copies. Haven't things changed.

I went on a comic crawl with you awhile back and I believe you told me about the 3rd print Justice League America of Doomsday slapping around the Justice League. I have it to this day!!

Ever since CGC recently announced that they will be noting newsstand, DC Universe Logos, and Zero Hour Logos on their labels, it has greatly increased the value of any book with these features. When bin diving, I always buy any comic with these features. Especially if they are additional prints (2nd, 3rd, etc.).

I just bought Justice League of America #69 in a dollar bin at a show on Sunday, sadly it's only a 1st printing.

Platinum editions were retailer incentives if I remember rightly. If the retailer had ordered so & so amount they recieved a copy.

I have the 2nd print of Batman 492, the second print of Batman 500, and the fourth print of Superman 75 plus a lot of newsstands and second prints in the Knightfall era. The used bookstore 50 cent bins have been good to me!

Crazy , I found The Batman 497 about 7 years ago in a dollar bin and picked it up just because it was the batman broken back issue, not knowing what it was and I have the Man of steel 18 5th printing that i got in toys r us bundle about 25 years ago. I had the man of steel signed by Louise Simonson at at convention before i knew what it was. It wasnt witnessed by CGC so i wonder if that dropped the value

Awesome video! This is totally in my wheelhouse. These '90s DC later printings are one of my obsessions as a collector. I have most of the ones you cover in the video and I knew some of the big ones like MOS 18 5th print were big $$$, but had no idea that later printings of books like Batman 492 and JL 69 were doing those kinds of sales in 9.8. Time to go through my longboxes!

Great video. And yes, the later printings of DC 90s books can break a completists heart. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the later printings of the Superman Funeral For A Friend books. Action Comics 686, Man of Steel 20, and Adventures 499 are all crazy rare in 9.8. Hell I know a guy that is actively offering a grand bounty for a 9.8 of Adventures 499 3rd print. (That one is also crazy because there is no second print. It doesn’t exist!) Also, Supes 75 has a more rare 3rd print newsstand. Finally Superman 82 2nd print is a nightmare to find PERIOD, let alone a 9.8. It was only sold at Waldenbooks back in the day as part of pack with the TPB of the death story and some trading cards. A lot of collectors don’t even know about it. This is why it still pays to hunt in dollar bins. Some deals have good and they don’t even know it.

I have a Batman 497 newstand with a wraparound like the direct first print, but the wrap is black and orange instead of black and white.

I have that justice league of America 4th printing. Not a 9.8 candidate but high grade.

Now that was some surprising info. Thanks for posting. I have a 3rd print of Superman the man of Steel #18. I also have all four printings of Superman #75 and something else. It is a signed copy of Supes 75 by both Jurgens and Breeding of the direct copy and the bagged copy, which is numbered as a set. I don't remember where I actually bought it but likely it was eBay. Knowing myself, I probably didn't pay much as I tend to be quite thrifty. I don't know the genesis of those books, or where the offer/signing came from initially. If anyone on this thread knows some of that history, feel free to let me know. I tend to be mostly a Marvel Silver age guy but back in the day I did buy the story arc of Doomsday. One book I do notice being overlooked is the 1st cameo of Doomsday in Superman #73. There is a full page ad with Doomsday in silhouette and the last page with Doomsday's fist pounding against a metal door. Now, I have to pull out that long box and have a good look see at what I actually have. Best to all.

I understand they have lower print runs but not the pricing. Most other collectables you want the first one and not whatever came later. Maybe it's because they came out so close together but then the one hulk book make no sense.

I appreciate the fact that some of the second third fourth printings have more value, but I am a collector of first appearances, and that means a first printing. Even though it may have less value that’s the way I collect.

James,did you know Batman the Killing Joke 9th printing is $200 to $1,000 depending on the CGC grade and I got two two copies of the 9th printing and 8 copies of the first printing and that's just because I have went crazy for the Joker books cause he is the craziest villain in all of comics.

You wanna know the annoying thing I went to a con and this vender I was at had like a full run of the all new flash including issue 97 but the annoying thing about it was it was a dc universe and I passed it up I didn't know what it was

I have super crisp DCU Superboy 9 and Man of Steel 18 that I may submit one day, but happy to keep them raw for now :) Also have DCU GL 51, but not 9.8 worthy sadly. Had no idea the 2nd print DCU version existed though! Also got GL 52 and 53 in DCU and a signed copy of 54 (non-DCU). Would love a remark on the GL 54 of a fridge lol That Justice League 69 is crazy!

Personally collecting works out better for me because I prefer variants with much cooler covers than the original release . They may be more expensive when they're first released but everyone knows they lose value much quicker and that's when I strike. I mean I personally would rather have a amazing and beautiful cover by Tyler kirkham or J Scott Campbell then your average everyday comic book picture. And I would imagine one day just like second, third ,fourth, fifth print comics variants will be worth more.

Great vid! Have the platinum versions of Superman 75 and Batman 492 (and Adv. Of Superman 500) as well as the 2nd print of JLA 69. All are raw though but should be 9.4 - 9.8. Also, it wasn't mentioned in the vid, but I also have a DCU logo variant of GL 48. Any thoughts on that one?

these kind of sales proves the good health of the comic community. i love it. people are starting to appreciate the later printings and realizing the significances. although.. i dont think i would pay top dollar for them lol.

What resource do you use that has things like this listed. I've had no idea that there was a second print of DC Universe Flash (1st Impulse). I have every issue of Flash starting from Volume 1 107 to current just missing some newstands. It seems like I have to pull from multiple databases to find a 2nd print every once in a while, that I didn't know existed.

Mainly because people are silly about this stuff… more dollars than sense.
