Bit of a rant to relaunch after a hiatus. What videos do you want to see?
There is a big movement that is trying to protect your food supply but is largely unreported. This is my take on why farmers need your support. Hint, without them, you have no food.
After much planning, we left England 2 years ago to build a new life in beautiful rural Portugal #SerraDaEstrela - It's not been easy, but it has been wonderful.
Thank you so much for watching #HowardsPortugal
I don't really know much about bees or farming or fruit, but we are trying to become less reliant on the shops and to grow more of our own produce, so we thought we'd give it all a try!
Ever wondered what would happen if you just sold up & moved out?
We did, so we sold up & moved out!
SUBSCRIBE here to see our latest videos as they come out! ru-vid.com/show-UC3Qk...

We hope that you enjoy the videos.

Thank you, Howard. I agree with your every word. Also... those articles about how growing your own food is six times more taxing on the environment than conventional agriculture are based in a study from the University of Michigan (“Comparing the carbon footprints of urban and conventional agriculture”, first author Jake Hawes). First of all, go see who financed that study… suffice to say part of the money came from the European Union’s research and innovation funding program Horizon 2023. Besides, the way this study is cited in the media is very skewed. The study does not demonize urban and small scale gardening, and even goes to admit that 25% of individually managed gardens outperform conventional agriculture. One of the authors, Benjamin Goldstein, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at University of Michigan, said publicly that “urban agriculture builds communities, teaches food literacy, provides job training, and grows nutritious food”, and gave solutions for the high carbon print “problem”, stating that the small farms that outperform conventional agriculture “tended to (i) use recycled materials in building their farms and compost instead of synthetic fertilizer, and (ii) grew crops that are carbon-intensive to grow conventionally (think greenhouses) or involve air-freight for distribution”. Check the article at www.nature.com/articles/s44284-023-00023-3. The Media are our worse enemies, right now.

Any news on the asian hornets? I quite firmly believe that the foolproof way to ruin something is to add a politician. While there are good and honourable people in politics, they are a minority. Your average politician has two goals: 1. Get elected, and then 2. Get re-elected. I think Portugal still (for now) offers an opportunity to fly under the radar. That's why I want to head in that direction.

Certainly, without CO2 there would be no plants. Interesting to note that commercial greenhouses often have CO2 machines to increase the concentration / promote faster growth.

I appreciate your thoughts. In Europe the farmers get loads of subsidies. Unfortunately they are complaining about the world market but they have a large and strong market in Europe. If they close the borders they are in for a suprise! The problem is in many places the way products are being sold on the market. 130 years ago in the Netherlands they evolved a market place. In the last 30 years the farmers dissolved their own markets. However food is crazy expensive and farmers income in the Netherlands went from €100.000 to € 300.000,- It’s not sure why they are protesting, I think it’s fear and higher interest rates!
@howardsportugal

It is also about Quantitive Easing - the governments are "printing" money to fund their vanity projects. Your house, for example, "increases" in value year on year...except that it doesn't. It is a fixed asset. What is really happening is the value of the money in your pocket is decreasing.
@gerardvriend729
@gerardvriend729 6 месяцев назад
@@howardsportugal I’ll visit you to talk about all of that. Farmers are stinking welthy! Their welth is locked up in their farm like with many people in their house! We in the Netherlands thrown our markets out the door, together with all small farmers. Now we relay on workers from Central Europe or even more far! There’s many problems like the rain last autumn. I’m looking for a piece of land to plant some trees. Area Castelo novo
@howardsportugal
@howardsportugal 6 месяцев назад
Yes, on paper, many farmers are indeed very wealthy. As you rightly say, however, their wealth is more often than not tied up in their properties, their machines & their animals. They are often asset-rich but cash-poor
@gerardvriend729

@@howardsportugal where I live there are circumstances that they don’t have to pay taxes on inheritance of the farm! Landprices are high becorse of this. They add a few expensive acres to a group of family owned acres and the Avery’s still cheap! The money is tied up, so it’s safe for inflation! There’s many sides. I would absolutely be a farmer if i could

I think we have around a 5 to 10 % survival rate for the trees...hard to tell as they are over such a huge area! The issue was drought last year, so any that are still there should outlive me!

Just to be clear - on reflection of what you said about carbon in the atmosphere - are you a climate change denier ? @@howardsportugal
@howardsportugal
@howardsportugal 5 месяцев назад
I am not sure what you mean by that term. Climate has always changed since earth was formed. The question as to whether man is changing the environment is, I assume, what you are asking. As an individual, I do my best (as I tried to explain) to look after the environment - I do not think that the solution to all perceived problems is for those that use private jets to tax people more.
@rayglover8697
@rayglover8697 5 месяцев назад
I think that anyone that is interested in natural history and is around 60 years old will be aware of the huge climate changes over the last half century. It is almost completely agreed amongst eminent scientists globally that mans immense impact(post industrial revolution) on emmitting polution has unquestionably contributed to the worlds warming. I was born and lived in Kent for 50 years and saw for myself how winters have got so mild and insects and spiders that were never seen as a boy were now becomming common(like the daddy long legged spider). To evade and dismiss mans impact on our environment goes along with all the far right mad Neo Cons in the USA that at their root thinking have an agenda to carry on allowing their factories to use cheap fossile fuels and continue churning out tons of pollution - just to line their evil pockets. America is one of a few Countries that (for some reason) hide their emmigration stats(those that leave their shores). With a bit of deaper research we start to understand why(not good PR as it is very high - runs into multi millions per year - which sort of explains why they need so may of immigrants(same as the UK)). Ironically, given that the U.S. is a far right (some would say Fascists) political system it is surprising that many Americans look to Portugal to settle - one of the few left wing Socialist countries in Europe. Having spent several months in California I can easily why many U.S. citizens want to get the hell out of this crazy scarey place - where one cannot walk the streets of a night time. I think I am right in saying that Portuguese people are very switched on and they are kind and thoughtful(as per their Socialist credentials) and irony upon irony(as above) the worlds Climate change inpact centre is based in Lisbon - your Capital(Climate Change Impacts Adaptation and Modelling - CCIAM) at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. So quite funny that here your are side stepping my question on being a Climate change denier and yet living amongst kind sweet people who care about the 'causes' of Climate change, so much so that the Worlds CCIAM is based in their capital - and you are sort of indifferent to why we are where we are ? @@howardsportugal

Your Uk standing charge calculation is surely way out by a country mile - I have just compalined today to our UK energy Ombudsman;- ...........Also another issue is the fact that British are allowed to charge excessive costings for their standing charges - on our bill it equates to 25% of the total - so our £435 total quarterly bill includes £81 standing charge - which is an utter disgrace. = £31 Gas and £51 on electricity. Just to say that we heat our lounge from NON british gas means so the above bill is no where typical of most peoples astronomical prices that would most probably be twice our(as we are now forced to buy USA gas). ...... I could be wrong given my above figures are for both gas and electric - so apolgies if this is skewed.
@howardsportugal

53.35p per day is, I am sad to report, the UK average standing charge...I wish indeed that I was wrong, but there are an awful lot of ways people in the UK are being fleeced
