Young people are moving out of Massachusetts at high rates seeking job opportunities, more affordable housing, and more. How is outward migration impacting the state and what could we do to get people to stay? Neil Whitteredge, who recently moved from Massachusetts to North Carolina, joined Crystal Haynes to discuss the pros and cons, along with Boston Indicators Research Associate Peter Ciurczak who added in some key research points.
00:00 - 00:40 Intro
00:40 - 1:50 Why are people leaving?
1:50 - 3:00 The impact on young people
3:00 - 3:50 Out migration in Massachusetts
3:50 - 6:00 Pros and cons
6:00 - 8:05 The housing crunch
8:05 - 11:03 Call to action?
Note: Ciurczak referenced a 2024 Zillow report on median home prices, not a 2022 report as mentioned in the segment.

Yes, i lived in leominster, commuted to boston. Rent was cheap in leominster, but i didnt enjoy this part of mass. Boston is a boring city and i wanted a better culture. I grew up in Vermont, so I'm used to a high standard of living and people that care about the environment, their communities and good vibes. Mass is good for visiting, cape cod and the vineyard are my fav spots in eastern mass. Berkshires are nice

I left Massachussetts for California. Here in California I earn $115/hour. Meanwhile working the same job I earn only $45/hour in Massachusetts. California is expensive. But so is Massachussetts. I still love Massachusetts. But I save more money here in California. I visit MA often. I missed MA. But I am happy and thankful to be here in California.

It's the cost of living with rent and land prices, low pay, and low help and assistance with ssi/SSDI, migrants taking over, and not helping already with the ppl that already live in the state, and drugs, not so much the crimes.... The ppl who r on section8, housing base, low income housing, r all struggling, paying more then what housing is supposed to pay for, not giving any housing increase to rent vouchers, the state is going down the drain, and is no longer a common wealth state, it's just sad and makes everyone cry and be depressed, creating more of a mental issue then what there is in Massachusetts... And the fact that nothing is open late, not even a 24hr Walmart, at least expand places to be open until 3am, not ltr, that would help the state out....

I moved from Massachusetts to Upstate New York for work, to be closer to family, and because of high cost of living. I lived in the greater Boston area for five years. I realized that the area/state was too expensive for me to seriously consider staying. There’s a lot that I miss about the state. I’ll most certainly return as a visitor, but not as a resident.

They're bringing in the illegals likely out of awareness that the lower income educated folks can tag team/couple up or secure bank loans to help foot a moving expense. I hate to sound awful and pessimistic but I think the real reason why the state is invested in these people is to secure people to do the menial, service oriented jobs and at the same time because of the expense to live here, effectively leave them trapped without a way out. They can be blindsided by being given some help like section 8 and other things but really they provide what those in power want but from a populace that's often oblivious or too distressed from their past to notice. It is revolting.

@@hannahwatt6454I agree with you on that one. A lot of the people moving to MA to NC are looking to be the big fish in a little pond situation and imitate the old money up here. I wish this wasn't the case but it's what I'm seeing. In the same sense that the California's that escaped to Texas brought to Texas. They weren't going there to build a comfortable life they went in to lord over their status on the locals and made prices for many unbearable plus brought the snobbery. It's so ridiculous that the first thing I hear from a Masshole going to NC is that they cannot afford Asheville or Wilmington...there's a massive state and so many places to choose from unlike MA that does get limited by space. Why the hell are you just picking the wealthiest, most inaccessible places in the state? They're proving an specific point.

As a Teacher I will be happy to respectfully disagree. The schools are only "so great" because they teach to a standard test. Special Education kids and other kids that can't pass that test take an alternative one and can not get an actual diploma. So when they run data and statistics, MA looks incredibly well educated, but it's all bc their entire curriculum revolves around a test that everyone is forced to pass. Teachers also MUST have a Master's Degree to teach. MA Education is a disaster. Maybe you're lucky in a certain community, but the teacher tests, mandated crap...it's all smoke and mirrors to look super smart, when it's not.

I am from MA. It's a democratic state. The democratic party is not what it once was, "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." The liberal agenda is causing much decline but not as bad as CA and NY yet. Thanks mayor Wu for adding all those additional Christmas trees around downtown crossing this past Christmas to cover up all the vacant store fronts. What exceptional leadership. Thank you to the Brookline couple who took in the illegal family into their home. Let's see how that works out once they get used to Brookline and refuse to leave. Thank you, city of Boston for that "wonderful" MLK and wife hands million dollar statue on the common. Looks more like something from a 1970's Penthouse Magazine. Again, mayor Wu, thank you for supporting the businesses on Hanover Street. Imagine the "increase" in customers they will be receiving this summer. Oh, and thank you Governor Healy, it will be so nice having an illegal alien shelter near the Childrens Museum in South Boston if it opens with my tax dollars. Very true - Wilmington and other places in bc are beginning to be expensive
@eyesthrurosecoloredglasses
@eyesthrurosecoloredglasses 19 дней назад
Of course Wilmington is expensive. A lot of Bay Staters have a habit of liking the most expensive areas of any place over more livable ones out of trying to imitate the generational wealtg/old money comforts of a good majority of the residents here. If you're leaving here you're either going to go to a more energetic city to get the social high MA lacks. Better to be broke but energetic and cheerful in NYC or Chicago than in MA by a long shot. Or go to the moderate cities of their states if you want create comforts and prefer suburban fare. Wilmington is where a lot of the old money NC residents live so they'll act like your typical MA resident with inheritances and try to wealth hoard. Your kids are uncomfortable because they suffer from the image conscious status oriented habit of many Americans with trying to keep up with the jonesses. NC is getting expensive but nowhere as expensive as MA is. They also have eons more micro-cities that actually are popular, lively, respected and not just minimized by the spoiled for having many POC unlike the cities in MA/AKA the former milltowns. People are snobby about them in MA because of the shaming of poverty or income diversity at that plus literal diversity, so they don't invest in those places when for many they're better than suburbs. I came from well off backgrounds into the US, because my dad wanted to work for an specific employer in the US. We first bought a gorgeous Victorian in Goergetown but actually preferred because they had way more people that looked like me and my mom (not white, my dad and brothers are white/Spanish). We bought a great home in one of these milltowns. We went to school in them. All four of my brothers got accepted to prestige schools and two went to Oxford. I went to McGill. We still prefer the MA cities to the suburbs not just because we can afford a comfy home in them but because they have a life and energy that resonates more with us. We're all deciding to leave MA ironically because we're getting sick of the "subtle" looking down of POC and people that don't want to live in the cookie cutter worlds. To make matters worse Boston does operate like a giant suburb to the point we feel horrified the place calls itself a "city". It's a city in terms of it having lots of buildings and offices, but it's not a city. My brothers have targeted NC for the ones that want a similar to MA life, another is moving to NYC and I'm moving to Chicago. All to places not just with more to offer than MA but way more diversity to boot. We get to see not just White people in the circle of wealth, success and innovation but POC. And their locals are nicer, more inviting, happier, more lively. Even when they have their own families and marriages.

That's the problem living in Boston, but government officials want to put everything in Boston as opposed to spreading out industry across the state. People want to stay close to Boston where all the jobs are at because it sucks driving in Mass, the road infrastructure is equivalent to a 3rd world (MIT engineering at its best, I suppose) and there is little public transport options and what there is, is not very reliable.
@eyesthrurosecoloredglasses
@eyesthrurosecoloredglasses 19 дней назад
@@mickeymouse2456I agree. The state can even afford to move jobs to the milltowns (secondary cities) if the suburbans want nothing in their vicinities. They shouldn't be surprised when the cities they shade so much also gain wealth over it because they're the only ones with the space. But too many people look down on these places because of passive racism. They say "the crime!" The schools! Pfft. If you're not White and thus not living in a bubble and not looking for trouble then trouble shouldn't find you.

You now have to be rich or poor to live in Boston/Greater Boston. Some low income/meager savings people are provided affordable housing in Cambridge or Brookline within walking distance near the T, some in nice updated units, some get great deals on condos with garage parking spaces. People who bought property 20 years ago or who make $200K+ in biotech are also doing just fine. It's the people who scrimped/saved, lived beneath their means and have more than 75K to their names who cannot afford to rent or buy in these cities. I know someone who in 2021 qualified for a Cambridge condo with garage parking for $320K, the market rate was $625K for the same condo. After moving in she got a higher paying job. Anyone with 75K in the bank would not qualify. If you have more than 75K to your name, you are considered too rich for affordable housing. I met a waitress recently who was paying $2500 for a 1 BR in Lynn. More and more people will leave the state if this greed continues.

I agree. That's exactly who's bound to leave here but come back when they're older. However that's also the reason why MA is increasingly looking and reading like an "older" state. This place is looking older and older the more one looks at it and when it's not the after 45 crew it's the college age and younger crew. The young and flirty crew (the ages where people are being playful if you catch my drift) aren't comfortable here because they also don't get privacy to enjoy that life stage and meet someone to eventually start a family with. This might look like a good thing but for some reason this is just feeling like a "bad" thing that the younger adults can't survive or thrive here.

I used to work for a company based in Massachusetts. They had wonderful benefits for everyone regardless of where you live. Build more homes with less red tape. Just be glad New York is more popular for migrants and you don't live near a porous border. Older folks are on fixed income so if you want them to rent out their homes then let them evict squatters and deadbeats instantly.

The governor has to expand the economy in MA to include the central and western parts of the state where there is some affordable housing. Also, the Mayors and Governor on the eastern side of the state have to stop catering to landlords and big money developers.

Cost of living and pricing everyone away from Boston. Better yet, why don’t Mass residents STAY in their state?? You cannot drive in any direction around Mass and not feel like you’ve accidentally crossed the state line into MA? It’s sad, they love their state so much but won’t stay in it.

I lived in MA until I was 30, then moved to CO, now settled in the desert of SoCal. MA is an absolutely miserable place, the weather is horrific, everything is so old, and it really is just a manic raging place. Whoever thought the most success financially and in home ownership, the highest salary and the most stability would be California!?! Yes the cheaper desert, but that speaks loud for a tiny state like MA. I've never went back and never will! 🙌🏾

When my parents came to the US, the plan wasn't for me to be an indirect system where I just work, spend, and own nothing. Ever. Even if I made the beloved 100k, most of that money is going to rent, car payments and maintenance (god forbid you take the train to avoid these costs and compete for a job). I don't want to live a life where I just work and spend. I want to have a family. Afford my own space where I can actually have a pet. Save for the day that jobs will start not hiring me because I'm too old. Save for the rainy day. Maybe buy my future kid a starter car and help them in school. If you come from "generational wealth" you can afford to care about "the SCHOOLS, THE MUSEUMS, THE MOST EDUCATED SOCIETY IN THE WORLD!" bullshit but I want to not just constatly be in survival mode because I don't have that. Neither does most of the planet. The way so many of the locals here talk about the white collar workers being fine and dandy. Yep, until they won't find young, gullible idiots willing to work the country clubs or daycare centers. Oh wait that's why we have the colleges! To supply an endless supply of fresh, posh money idiots wanting designer education willing to wipe the butts of the american elite. Yay. I'm also sick of not seeing more people that look like me in success. I'm hispanic and it's a bit disconcerting to be looked at and treated as a "bimbo" by many of the locals. There's a certain ignorance an education and growing up sheltered clearly doesn't shake off. For the asking prices this place asks I'm taking my Nursing degree to NYC or Chicago. NC if I want the suburban experience. At least NYC or Chicago habe entertainment, happier, more welcoming locals. Some people don't get stared as anomalies when they enter certain establishments or show up to buy. People lookjng down their nose at others just because they forget they habe society set for them as opposed to having actually worked for it. If you're not going to build or provide entertainment as a way to raise their prices, fine. Don't be surprised by people bored for not willing to splurge, to get nothing. Oh wait we get the fancy college association, work with the "world's most pompous (I mean talented), work under some something something something the number who owns a zillion streetnamehmpllc's. Ugh, so prestigious! The state forgot people work to live not live to work. I suppose if it's of any small comfort, MA can pride itself in indeed being the "most american of states". The goal was to make a society of Norman Rockwell paintings and instead it is turning out like the George Carlin "American Dream" joke; You really have to be asleep or have no life to believe it. I'm jumping off this ship. I grew up here. Decided to travel to the 50 states and other countries to explore. Get a sense of things. Yes, MA is great, not eden; but it's seriously not accounting for the reality that most people will not and cannot be rich. That's ok. Let it become a nation of the wealthy hypocrites, if that's their dream, that's fair. I for one know damned well I'm never getting there. So why delude myself into investing for literally nothing I have a place in?

Please don’t move south like this guy without considering why you are forced to leave Massachusetts. The cost of housing being prohibitive didn’t happen spontaneously. It’s exactly the politics that made you hesitant to move to NC that make NC affordable versus MA. If you’re too ignorant to understand, politics have economic consequences, keep your destructive policies and your multiple job lifestyle in Boston. Please don’t ‘colonize’ us and bring your junk politics with you so we can no longer afford housing, either!! So elitist. Gross.
