Even with job permits, new migrants struggle to find work in Massachusetts

Governor Maura Healey is again urging the Biden administration to expedite work permits for new migrants in Massachusetts. But those permits are just the first step. According to Healey's office, only one in five migrants who have already gotten work authorization have been able to find a job. What's getting in the way? Crystal Haynes recently spoke to GBH News Reporter Sarah Betancourt, Jeff Thielman, president of refugee agency the International Institute of New England, and Modlaire Phanord, who arrived from Haiti last year and now lives in a state shelter with his wife and young child.

There are so many online language translations options available so why aren't the migrants availing themselves of this on the free phones they've been provided with? Have they no initiative at all? What do they expect?

MA is a high cost of living state. Most of these people do not speak English and many appear low skilled. Who is going to hire them? If Modilaire is a "hero" why did he not stay in Chile and try to make it there?

So, now they have work permits. What good is the permit if you don't speak English or aren't qualified to do the job? What's next, do we have to teach them English and train them for jobs? How about hiring our citizens. Chee, what a novel idea.

I find it hard to believe they can’t find ANY work, cleaning, restaurants etc. Maybe they just don’t want to take those jobs. My family came to MA (legally) 40 years ago and didn’t speak English, we found our way without all this support! Get off your @sses. And don’t expect to live directly in the city 🙄

If you analyze the income received by “newcomers” it actually is more than the majority of the Americans who have paid into Social Security all their lives and are now retired? If you add in the extra benefits, the difference is drastic?

The truth is that these people end up living in horrible conditions in dangerous neighborhoods working 60 hours/wk for minimum wage -- in perpetuity! They keep telling themselves things will get better while they accept more handouts from the government which barely keep them alive. Sound familiar?

@dbelex It's not their responsibility to cater to the rent desires of the landlords. These people are brought up here to do exactly what OP said. They're slaves living in purgatory AND filling the jobs no one wants to do or stay in MA to do. Win win for the wealthy with little to no gain for the migrant. Getting govt assistance is the least they could get for the exploration the people bringing them up here are expecting these to spend to try to survive here.

What was the expectation here? At best you get a minimum wage job or slightly above that. You can't live off of that in the most expensive state in the Union. You will end up depending on the govt again..

When the migrant crisis got out of hand here about 2 years ago, my understanding was they would be able to apply for work permits after 60 days. Why has this deadline not been met?

Right Salaries? Amazon, Imperial distributors. He got fast tracked into a job that a citizen could have filled if you had helped them with the same resources/job connections.

With the current minimum wage of 20 approaching 25 dollars an hour, Many legal residents are willing to accept less rather than lose their Job. The Irony is that illegal migrants will not work for less than 25$ an hour.

Fake news. I'm in delaware and jobs especially construction jobs are hard to find. My younger siblings have been looking for a simple retail job for months. It is a disgrace.
