Nah that's kinda cap. Even if were the MOST focused on grounded midrange neutral (it's not) that wouldn't make it better for learning the genre. It doesn't really matter what game you start with because the concepts that will transfer are universal.
@IC2I
@IC2I 9 месяцев назад
@@evilded2That is a much better way to put it. That's why most fighting game terms are universal.
@MikuruX

I'm going to say that the reasoning behind it is basically the barrier of entry is a lot easier than the other 2 aforementioned games. A lot of stuff in Smash could be applied to Mortal Kombat but a lot more so to Street Fighter to a certain degree but to a smaller degree when it comes to Tekken, mostly because it's a 3D game and you have to factor the 3D aspect of that game which Smash doesn't have. With simplified controls added to SF6, it makes it easier for Smash players get accustomed to Street Fighter since they can play it the same way as with Smash (in terms of button layout & directional specials.....something I'm think MK doesn't have). Let's not forget the fact that Capcom actually supports their game and their community (even though Capcom does pisses its community off sometimes) unlike Nintendo who seems to have no qualms with pushing them aside, neglecting them, or outright have some sort of disdain for their own community and make it so obvious at times that they just don't care nothing for them unless it benefits the company to a certain degree. These are just some of the things I can come up but I'm certain that others have other opinions on this matter.

I think if you are a schmoover in Smash, youd like tekken. That was my experience anyway. In smash I enjoy Sephiroth, all about spacing and movement. I play Bryan in tekken, similar thing. Great breakdown you got my guy

Because some of the SF6's core mechanics are easy to pull off and well suited to non old sf players. The addition of modern controls also makes It more comfortable to aclimate them, as the quarter circle barrier is gone using this scheme; mix this with DR, DI and some Button mashing characters with lots of unblockables and voilá, we have some New smash blood on the sf battleground.
@orangejuiceow5420

i switched from smash to fighting games, and ever since i just cannot go back. The "free flow movement" of smash is a double sided sword. It can make parts of it very fun, but due to the nature of this genre, it usually turns the meta into a campfest. Yes, melee too. Matches go one for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 minutes. Everytime. Its so tedious. And many parts of the match feel like i didnt interact with my opponents in any meaningful way. Fighting games' "limited" movement forces you to focus on the actual fighting part, and playing overly defense is being passively punished by practically every fg. It makes them in the long run a lot more fun
@evilded2
@evilded2 9 месяцев назад
I don't think that has as much to do with movement as is does with the design of the format. Like ggxxac+r and MvC have even wilder movement mechanics but, are much shorter. Like you can still get timed out by a Bridget or Storm hovering up in the sky where you can never reach but, that's only like 99 seconds max. Also in more modern fg meter and other system mechanics give characters universal tools to deal with situations.

Easy answer: Ryu has his inputs in Smash so we're user to quarter circles already. Funny enough, I think soul Calibur has a control scheme more similar to Smash Bros. I haven't played it in a while but I believe it's button + direction

I´m midway of watching the video and I don´t really think players from Smash would get into Street Fighter because the game is easy, I think it comes down to the money that Capcom is willing to give and also the game is fun. But touching on some points about players from Smash having a hard time to other fighting games, I think it´s not really that bad, Smash is a really good complex game and some players are amazing, it just takes time to get used to it.

Tekken is a bit of an adjustment for any Smash player who doesn't main Kazuya (aka Riddles) and Mortal Kombat is Mortal Kombat. The real question is why Smash players haven't moved to KOF or any Fatal Fury games, but I feel the answer for that is because XV, while great gameplay wise, kinda falters elsewhere and isn't too worth the price (that and this weird notion people have about KOF being hard when picking up KOFXV is easier than picking up Strive imo). Hopefully City of the Wolves changes that though

Street fighter is the immediate series that comes to mind to try out a new game. SNK just needs to get their foot in the door and the price for nearly 59 characters with some being free DLC? It does fumble on story and lack of crossplay. Matchmaking being busted upon release. Meanwhile Capcom charges $15 for tmnt costumes and $6.99 per costume?

Calling smash "hard" and SF "simple" it gives me a fucking laugh really, but i got your point. The thing about smash is that is the equivalent of board games like "uno", "scrabble" or "jenga" is that the game is pretty simple to understand, play and win on your first try, BUT of course there are competitive scene for all of them and is a whole other level, involving a lot of strategy and planning ahead that no casual player could hande out-of-pocket. Is the same as smash: Is pretty easy to grab and have some fun even win on your first try as it is, but the competitive scene is just leagues ahead on what normal players can do. Traditional FGs (2D and 3D) are more like Chess, Risk or Magic:The Gathering which may look intimidating and there a lot of rules, and in competitive play is even more tough, but at the end anyone can play as they please and you can have a fun experience sticking just to basics.

Fighting games that are not Smash, SF or Tekken make zero sense. They get released. get played for a month or two and then they're abandoned by the players. I don't get it, but since this is the case it's no wonder Smash players are gravitating towards SF6 - it's colorful, just like Smash, it has a lot of characters with insanely different abilities and playstyles, just like in Smash, and since Tekken 8 is not doing any of that SF6 seems like the logical choice.
@jirehtheprovider

While the Nintendo opposition is one that makes sense, here is another factor that SF 6 has that many may not as mention. Simply, most of the amsash Players I noticed that go to street fighter 6 more or less started their competitive careers in Smash Bros brawl, Smash 4, and / or Smash Ultimate. Thus, a younger demographic versus the Smash Melee players. The former being more lenient to other fighting games whereas the latter takes a bit more coaxing to try than the latter. The few that started competitive wise in Melee do exist in Street Fighter 6, but not as many as Smash Players that started from Brawl to Ultimate.
@Yokai_Yuri
@Yokai_Yuri 9 месяцев назад
It's simple, Smash Ultimate is an unbalanced mess. We can now see signs of that in today's meta with characters such as Sonic, Steve, and Kazuya just to name a few; therefore, switching to SF6 to experience what a balanced (for the most part) real fighting game is, is a good call.

i think another really important factor you should've mentioned is that street fighter is the face of the fgc, the most popular fighting game, modern controls are obviously important but if sf6 didn't have street fighter in the name most smash players wouldn't have bothered with it. You don't see smash players or non-fighting game players in general trying out power rangers, footsies or tough love arena despite these games being even more accessible, they have even simpler controls and systems as well as being very cheap or even free. A big part of street fighter's brand is being the quintessential fighting game, the one every fighting game player at least tries, so street fighter adding modern controls and marketing itself as more accessible to newcomers means it's the best time to try it out and join the fgc. Smaller games, even ones that try to cater to new players, don't have the brand recognition or the marketing budget to make themselves known outside of the fgc unfortunately

Its a combination of things. Smash players just like smash, and wont really branch out unless they have a reason to. They rarely even swap to other platform fighters, but the recent Panda Global thing gave them a reason to go elsewhere. Street Fighter is THE fighting game series pretty much and it just launched a new game that is massively popular, and a lot of smash players who were already dabbling in Fighting Games were already playing it. Add all of this up with the fact that Capcom is endlessly supportive of their scene (especially compared to Nintendo), the game's reputation of being simple and straight forward, and how sort of....segregated for lack of a better word Mortal Kombats Community is from the rest of the FGC, its easy to see why they'd go with Street Fighter

Mnnn all you said APPLIED to SF6, SF6 is a HARD GAME, one of the the most complex and difficult SF games made, even pros says that, the level of stress dealing with all the options is insane, that clip you show of Guilty Gear....I can show you dozens of JP, Blanka or Ken situations that decide the game right at the start.......so say SF is the basic to start not necessary a reality......at high level ALL Fighting games are hard as F, and the experience you acquire on 1 game.....ACTUALLY can help you in other, there are plenty of succesful players in the FGC that start in a different FG and ended in other and still manage to find success.....Xiaohai, Kazunoko, Sonicfox, Tokido, Fuudo, all this players made a name in a different fighting game and many ended becoming legends in Street Fighter as well, or in other games......I would say Smash player just haven't try hard enough and Lefteen showcase is possible, also Riddles was playing SF6 in a very successful manner in the early days.....I think also you have to LIKE the games, like really love them to stay playing them, and I think that's the most important thing, Smash players get too attached to their game even an ENTRY, like Melee players ONLY want to play MELEE, and not try hard enough in other entries, different to MK, SF or Tekken, the pros in those games ALWAYS adapt to the next one, still Daigo Umehara playes the newest SF game at the highest level, even if he can't dominate as he used to in SFIII or IV, he was still one of the best in V and is pretty damn good in VI.....while Hungrybox, Mang0, and many Melee Gods are just GOOD on MELEE not any other Smash game, Lefteen again been probably the exception (and still he couldn't do much on other Smash games as he did in Melee).....mya be attachment, or just not wanted to move to the next entry full time, but Smash players tend to stick with their particular Smash, not move according, like MenaRD, Punk, Knuckledu, Mago, Justin Wong and so many others do in their game series they play.

Cause I got into Tekken and the controls were bullshit. Having 2 4 and 2~4 be literally difference animations with different properties is not something I am willing to deal with. Mortal Kombat is like aggresively ugly. All the animations are so stiff. The 2 beauties of Smash style games are: Combos arent a single player affraid. And, more importantly, the game gives you active feed back. Oh my SF4 link didnt work? Bettry trial and error cause the game is pouty and wont tell you. Me trying to multi shine but the shine didnt come out? -> My shine was too early. My shine came out but I ended up double jumping -> Shine was too late. And this goes for every single thing you practice in Smash (most of my Experience is in Melee after all I know that the mondern entries also have a lot more arbitrary fuckery.) and that is such an explosion in quality of life when you are trying to learn something.

@evilded2
@evilded2 9 месяцев назад
As someone who plays melee along with a load of other fighting games, you are only partly correct. So to your first point tekken's use of canned follow-ups and overall design theme of high construction, can be very off-putting. The goal is of course to create a visual experience reminiscent of film choreography. The end result of this is the characters are basically made to have over 100 different tools that can only be used in one specific scenario. It's certainly a very different than many other games in that way. True, Mk has the visual appeal of a rotting carcass. It's an embarrassment to the genre. So you have two points: Interaction during combos. Their are other games where you can rps during combos, the classic example is killer instinct but, there are also more limited combo breakers like Guilty Gear's burst. Active feedback. Using a link is really strange example, since the only ways to mess up a link are the same as the smash example. If it doesn't come out, it's too early. If it comes out but it doesn't combo it's too late. It seems like you might just have more experience with one game and are then able to intuitively figure out what is happening. That just comes with time. I personally find smash much more annoying to lab since you need to worry about analog stick inputs. Moreover the tools for learning are much better in fighting in general, you just gotta play around with them. (Although thank god for slippy) It sounds like you value games that gain debth from emergent complexity and interactive situations. Id recommend Guilty Gear +R(steam) and Street Fighter 3(Fightcade). Plus they both don't have any buffer if you're into difficult execution.

@@evilded2Guilty gear yes I agree but third strike? That games easy to pick up and has almost no combos and a slower pace which would drive a melee player insane. Think about how slow the pace is in third strike compared to melee. That man needs speed like dbfz or mvc3 or kof

I don't know friendo. I traded SF 4/5 and Tekken 7 for SSBU from about 2018 to the middle of 2022....and it wasn't extremely difficult or different from those fighters. We gotta stop that narrative that smash isn't a fighter, or that it's so different from core fighting games. It is a fighter, and it's not as different as one we might think. In my time playing SSBU, I applied shit like positioning, frame reading, combos to some degree, input timing, defense and other fighting game core mechanics from other fighters. I personally think some Pro/high level Smash players are up their own ass a bit too much; excuse my harsh language. But I think the pros/high level guys want to be a big fish in a small pond. Why do I say that? Well because aside from the core fighting game mechanics in SSB, there are mechanics that are Smash specific: IDJ, Smash DI, short hops, wave dashing, using the different air attacks, knowing match ups for level selection, etc. And compared to a fighter like SF...I'd say these mechanics are really hard to learn, and there's not as much help to effectively teach these mechanics, as some of these are labbed and then implemented, and not so much developer intended. So if you're good at these mechanics....you can get an ego. If you're the king at Smash....a much harder-to-learn fighter that most people see as such...why go be a peasant in another game that's easier to learn, hence making you an easier target to take Ls? Leffen doesn't really see it like that, but I think a lot of pros do. Plus SF is the biggest it's been in years. So a lot of pros from a lot of other fighters aside from smash are jumping into SF. So yeah man. If Tekken 8 was first to release, with the hype of SF 6, I'm sure Smashers would jump into Tekken 8 instead. So I don't know man. It's a lot of variables. Awesome and captivating vid, especially from someone who followed SSBU heavily up until the SF6 announcement.

SF is merely a stepping stone or an entry point into the FGC. Its one of the more recognizable IPs along with Tekken and Mortal Kombat and teaches players how to play 2D fighters. But I doubt players will just switch to fighting games on a whim like Leffen or Riddles unless Nintendo goes scorched earth and say "You can't host tournaments for our games under ANY circumstances." So they will most likely stick with smash or smash equivalents like Rivals or Brawlhalla. The FGC is welcoming at any point though.

Street Fighter 6 is a good game to enter the 2d style for the first time. But is NOT the easiest or simplest, at all. Is a GREAT game, but a SUPER hard one. It doesn't take too much to learn? That is totally false. It takes a lot, because it is hella deep. Any Mortal Kombat is easier. Uni, Melty blood, Persona, DNF and a lot of other anime fighters are easier. Granblue VS is even easier to understand and play. DB Fighterz is not deeper or more complex than Street Fighter, either. Even Tekken is arguable easier to play at lower levels, when the advanced techs still don't get use. Smash people flocks to Street Fighter because it is the most famous of all, because Capcom has done way more than the others to promote and actually teach the game, and because Street Fighter 6 LOOKS less intimidating. The models are big and easier to see, the rythm of the fight is slower, and the many complexities and deep mechanics are hidden at first. Appears easier and less complex, has a good reputation, offers help and good numbers: YES. Is actually simpler and easier? NO. Not at all.

Im not a smash player, but i can tell that a lot of people who say "Smash is an easy kiddie game" just can't really see the vast difference between high level and low level play. In street fighter it's pretty easy to see why a beginner is bad at the game because its as simple as "get blocked -> get punished." Because in platform fighters movement decisions make such a big difference, to inexperienced players it kinda just looks like "jump around a bunch, get some random hits and win." Even after playing a lot of brawlhalla against high level players, it's difficult for me to pinpoint why I keep loosing, but the fact that im getting beat so consistently is evidence that there must be somthing im not seeing. I made it to the top rank in guilty gear, and diamond in sf6, and i can easily say that those skills don't help me at all in smash or brawlhalla. Fighting games and platform fighters are barely related at all.

@CosmicMercenary personally I like it better than smash, mostly because of how the movement feels, but I'm a noob so Idk. A lot of fun tho. (Plus the devs support the competitive scene)

as a person who plays all fighting games smash is just more fun i end up playing smash more often than other fighting games but in ST6 it has modern controls and it makes the game more fun for me cuz i dont have to put in the work and practice move list or muscle memory.

And with that information all I have to say is, Don't let anyone else tell you how to have fun playing fighting games.
