Why are South Indian actresses not represented enough in South Indian film industries?

Although many exceptions within South India’s diverse population exist, most South Indians are dark-skinned. Film industries here are the most unique in that they discriminate against their own majority-specifically their women-for their dark skin tone. Day by day, it is becoming harder to see an actual South Indian woman play a pivotal role in a South Indian film since industries are resorting to casting fair-skinned actresses from North India. This op-ed delves into how Tamil and Telugu films have been creating a false reality for people to live in by setting unrealistic beauty standards and promoting gender stereotypes.

The actual hypocrisy is that these tamil movies sometimes have dialogue praising darkskin and Tamil language but actually doing opposite in the movie industry.

Yeah. The double standard is appalling. Film setting always about Tamil guys proud of their dark skin and sing praises Tamil culture, but at the same running after fair skin Northie/ Non Tamillian. It's to feed their male chauvunistic ego that fair skinned women fall in love and want to make babies with them. Amy Jackson period really made me stop watching Tamil movies for a while.

You should watch Malayalam movies. I can proudly say malayalam Industry is one of the most progressive Industry in India in terms of this matter. In Malayalam talent of an actress matter more than fair skin.

@@ashieshsharmah1326 Who told you Samantha works in Malayalam industry? Samantha haven't done a single Malayalam film in her career. Fyi there are 4 major film Industries in South. Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and kannada. Samantha works in Tamil and Telugu Industries. Which is more like Bollywood when comes to fair skinned actress. While Malayalam film industry is different from the rest in this matter. Next time do some research before jumping into the comments section.

Not the ones imported from north just because of fair skin. All these actors can actually act. They have talent hence they are remaining as heroines. Many actresses came and got field out in Malayalam industry.Because they had looks but zero acting. Honey rose, Prayaga Martin, Gayathri suresh etc are example for this.

The hypocrisy of Tamilians is really unbelievable. For years they tried to resist North India's political influence/interference in their regional politics. They fought against the encroachment of Hindi into their local language and culture. Yet, they can't seem to get enough of the lighter skinned north Indian actresses who now dominate the south Indian film industry. What a shame and blatant contradiction of their professed opposition to the influence of North India.

@@maya-cc2sx ... nothing has changed to the extent that tangible changes can be seen, I have seen dark skinned ppl even kids being called ma dra si, ka alu .. look at All the movies, All the ads(not just fairness creams) no dark skinned person on the screen, only fair(light) skinned person, a dark skinned person is always portrayed as villainous and/or poor ... when at least 50% of the actors in movies and ads are dark skinned and are lead - actors and actresses (especially), then We can say, change is happening.. that scenario is never gonna happen in India, that's for sure 🤣.

You don't see such toxic beauty standards in Hollywood or other western countries 😂 if "fair skin is beauty" ...concept happened in US, Canada, UK or any places that has black people residing... A huge riot and backlash would follow considering it as highly racist which it is... that's why you don't see skin fairness cream ads or such concept is not seen in Hollywood ads... Just to confirm that Krishna was really dark, he is also known by his other name "Meghashyama" which means "as dark as rainy clouds". Even in Tamil, we call Lord Vishnu as Maal or Tirumaal which means "blackness" or "holy blackness" in Tamil.

Indian movies are not like Hollywood, movies here are complete package, no matter how serious the story is there has to be a love interest also be it 15mins. 2. Light complex skin does look good in various dresses and all in majority that being said I don’t deny black beauty. 3. These action packed movies are catered to men, in a 2hr movie a guy will not sit and try to the inner beauty of that women in theatre. 4. Men do like women who don’t argue, who are fun and all. When they stopped taking North Indian girls the next target is kerala or Tulu girls. They need to address the issue properly , Are tamil industry giving enough chances to tamil girls irrespective of skin colour. In America Africans are not considered beautiful in the beginning. Only kollywood and tollywood uses north Indian actresses.Mollywood usually represented by native actresses.Don't generalise entire south India.And why saying south Indians are dark skinned?In fact most of the so called non south Indians are darker skinned people just like south Indians.I am saying this because media has created an impression that only south Indians are darker skinned people and rest of Indians are pure white.Most of these so called north Indian actresses in Telugu and Tamil industry are Punjabi or Sindhi who are usually light skinned compared to other Indian ethnic groups be it south Indian or non south Indian.Even Bollywood use Pakistani and Afghan,foreign orgin actresses in their movies who look nothing like average woman in so called north Indian/"non south Indian states".So it's a pan Indian problem not just "south Indian".

As compared to North South india's general skin tone is darker. There is no denying that there are fair South Indian and dark North Indian but if we take out the average skin tone of both South india has darker skin tone.

And also the women in male centric movies are really strong and potrayed really well. So we malayalis don't see any difference. Not only that we have women lead movies but those movies gained great recognition . Women in malayalam are considered super stars. For example most of the roles manju warrier, parvathy etc do today are women centric. And many times they are paid more that lead males in the movie. So in malayalam industry there are only actors no man no woman.

First time I got south Indian youtuber talking on this issue of their industry. So much work is needed in our whole film industry no matter it's bollywood or tollywood. And ya sai pallavi is my fav south indian actress because of her acting, nature, natural beauty. But here's also a problem she is fair to some extent, which I feel is wrong that this still not make me neutral audience. Even I am dark skinned but still that obsession of fairness not go anywhere. I think society is responsible for this.😔

Yes blue eyes i would say are adored by almost everyone but blonde hair are hardly acknowledged as attractive and as far as skin color is concerned, its subjective I haven't seen anyone say black is attractive but then pale isn't considered attractive either, rather there is a part of the world and it makes up the larger part which considers fair better and a part which considers tanned or brown color better.

I understand that you've done this video with good intentions and to promote dark skinned South Indians but why is nobody talking about dark skinned North Indians? They're also being discriminated as well. There are a lot of dark skinned North Indians out there but I don't see any of them getting casted as lead roles in any of the so called Bollywood films either. It's all about India's obssession with fair skin. As we all know, India's a diverse Country and there are people with different skin tone from lighter to darker shades everywhere here. So when you talk for dark skinned people, talk for all Indians in general and not just for South Indians. North or South, we are all Indians and it shouldn't matter at all anyway.

The difference is south Indians are generally more darker than north indians yet there is no acceptance or awareness of this inherent discrimination, something we all face. And these movies only steer it forward. Never saw any movie where a dark man gets idealised for his beauty. They idealise rajini for style, chiru/ allu arjun/ ramcharan/ntr for dance and Mahesh Babu for perfect male beauty, milky boy, prince charming etc.. who doesn't even look like a south indian.

I remember this first Malayalam movie I saw, “Godha” where the lead guy and his friend (both from Kerala) travel to Chandigarh for his studies and his friend is telling him (basically gushing) how punjabi women’s skin is like “wheat mixed in milk” and how excited he is about it huh!? South Indian women whether fair or not are not look forward to because film industry here is incredibly patriarchal and orthodox culture regarding local women because they women, here tend to adhere to native customs and decency(see Sai pallavi) which is a hindrance to the smooth functioning of the majority masala movie ecosystem of Telugu-Tamil industry where women are needed nothing more other than for eye candy and just obey. With native South women you cannot treat them the same way lightly as it's done with North Indian women. You just don't understand the culture here. South women if they acted like North Indian women in South they will be shamed and regard her as just uncultured and characterless. North Indian do not belong to our society and really don't matter to the people here if they really are characterless either. Same is not true for South Indian women.

@Aman Panwar idk when I've chatted with you but ok. You really seem to hate the South but that's ok I guess, I feel you've had bad experiences with many of them. I too don't have very nice interaction with every North Indian or any other person either(like you) but the difference is I don't hate them to the core, I'm not really that sensitive. North and South India are indeed too very broad fields and generalising these two regions into assumptions only an unintiated would put his luck up with. South India relatively is far more civilized and level headed with what? North India. Nothing can be generalised but this is where we are trying to analyse both this population to our mere human understanding. South is conservative regarding it's own people that's why South Indian celebrities are all so polite and decent and not as open minded and brash even promiscuous as Mumbai Delhi. Natives and Outsiders have different lenses people judge on here. If you're South Indian you know how to talk and behave in South culture if you want to seen as completely respectful by Southerners, i.e, be like us otherwise people will take you lightly or ignore you subconsciously. In North India this mostly doesn't exist and people generally are more unorganised that's why South Indian film industry exploits North Indian as much this could not happen with South because South Indian women are too rigid and traditional.

This is why I choose to support our kerala malayalam film industry because they respect their own actresses authentic talents and uniqueness, rather having actresses that fit the shallow, superficial and unattainable white physical traits and beauty standards. South India is blessed with so many uniquely, gifted beautiful women (and men) yet the film producers always opt for european western looking "actors" rather than actually looking for talent. It's such a shame, I really hope that future tamil/telugu movie directors abandon these current colonial standards of beauty.

In Tamil cinema there is not even a single leading female actors from Tamil family . Even actors like Sai Pallavi , Aishwarya Rajesh , Samantha who are born and brought up in Tamilnadu has different mother tongues like Telugu , Baduga etc . They are not Tamilians. My family was once went to Andhra Pradesh, and one of the sisters (a south Indian woman, who herself was not fair skinned) told another sister, that coloured man (my father, he is dark skinned man. We are from Bengal, Eastern Part of India), would not give up his seat( that he paid for, to seat with his family, me & my mother). So the sisters could get a seat that was not near the loo (we were in a train). India is just filled with such casual everyday colourism.

Recently my family have started looking for a Bride. I have a wheatish complexion and I have got rejected by few profiles because of not being white enough. On the other end, some bride profiles where rejected because my family says "color kammi"(less color), Basically black. I was taken aback when I heard this. it is good to have some ground studies regarding the topic without prejudice. coastal wood means Tulu flim industry and kanada film industry is known as Sandalwood . The age gap between the lead pairs has been common in film industry since long time. And ofcourse the obsession with skin color. Well its purely my opinion and its just a thought that I would like to share that even the male actor might in a lot of pressure because they have to work hard on their physical fitness even at the age of 55 or 60 so they can suite the character but another question arises that do they object when they are cast alongside an actress who is much younger to them. I also find it sometimes cringey when I see this type of casting especially when the actresses play the role of a mother of much older actor. Yes something must be done to give more chances to the local speaking actresses irrespective of their color in movies. I think the audience are now getting mature and are now looking for talented artists instead of other factors.

Majority of South Indian Actress are South Indian itself, huge percentage of Actress are from kerala and some are from Karnataka. There are some telugu and tamil Actress too, just because they are fair that doesn't mean they are North Indian

Sad to see that even after the British left more than 70 years ago, their false attempts at tying caste to colour and an almost general preference of Indians for fair skin has still not died out. This video applies to all of India more or less. We really need to start teaching ourselves and coming generations to feel comfortable in our own skin

@nothing nothing education has nothing to do with racism or the developed world would have been free of racists who judge based on skin colour by now. I suggest you read my reply first. I didn't deny it exists in those other countries. I said it is not nearly as socially present as it has been in the subcontinent since the British came. Culturally, we have had gods who were dark skinned and were deemed handsome for it, so whatever prejudice existed before was very limited and isolated as it is in those countries outside the subcontinent too. The Europeans, primarily the British and the Germans were the inventors of the skin based racial segregation and you say they're not responsible for what they left behind on our society. I suggest you read some actual books instead of Wikipedia and Urban dictionary.

Such racist attitudes may well have existed for thousands of years in isloated instances but in a land that was and is primarily formed by people who had and have darker skin in general, a persistent, social norm couldn't have been built unless it got administrative reinforcement and that in the subcontinent only happened when the British ruled. I didn't say they were solely responsible but they were solely responsible for developing it as a mainstream element of the Indian social mindset which is what comes to be reflected in our media and films.

The reason why dark skinned actors don’t get discriminated is because the discrimination ended in the 80s. Rajinikanth was the first dark skinned hero that stopped that perception. Sadly, that didn’t happen with women. We have some dusky stars like Pooja hegde but not enough.

Hey! A "North-Indian" here... I've been watching movies and every form of entertainment media from a very young age, since I didn't have an environment in our family where we would have conversations and would share our feelings and express emotions. So, in a nutshell, movies have been an outlet for me and my emotions to feel validated and alive. As a teen, in high school, it was because of my sister I was introduced to the South Indian Film Industry, starting from Allu Arjun and Hansika Motwani in "Desamudru", in Hindi - "Ek Jwalamukhi" (translation - one volcano 😅) or maybe it was Arya's "Aa Ante" song. Nonetheless, I was invested in South Indian movies as well like my sister. The fair skin obsession which Bollywood have, was evidently present in South Indian movies. I really used to wonder coming at a point of short analysis or just wondering that how South Indian actresses can be so fair-skinned while we all knew that South Indian people are mostly dark-skinned. From there after, I was introduced to the "women are born beautiful". Then girls are beautiful and they are supposed to, especially in rich families. I mean, the obsession with making women and especially young girls, which is very concerning, to look attractive is seriously toxic, now I realise. There's one advertisment from Himalaya Face Wash product that features a teenage girl being concerned with a pimple on her face, that made felt so cringe. This is not right for any kid, let alone girls only. Thank you for your video. I came across an information that I wasn't really aware of until now. Though I knew the background of Tamanna and the surname of Kajal Aggarwal used to baffle me that how these actresses are called "South Indian actress" when they simply are not. The point should be to feel okay with both fair and dark skin/complexion. If you're treating me and others around you well, I don't require anything more from you to feel comfortable with and from you to have a harmonious relationship.

@mohit Sharma Looks like you are a hater man. There are not many telugu girls aspiring to become actresses. Ritu Varma, Shobitha Dhulipala are the only telugu girls who are working in TFI. In a few years I am sure that more telugu girls will aspire to be. Not sure why you would just hate on the audience of two entire states. In reality Telugu audience are the best in the whole world. Telugu audience are watching films of all the actors since many decades. Upendra, Suriya, Karthi, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Prithviraj, Dulquer Salmaan and many actors have fans here and some times their telugu dubbed version collected more money than their original. Majority of South Indian Actress are South Indian itself. Tamil film industry 90 percent Actress are from kerala. Telgue film Majority of Actress are from kerala and Karnataka, there are some Tamil and Telgue Actress to. Only 20-30 percent Actress are only North Indian Like Tammanna, kajol, Rakul preet but these Actress are also field out. Now 90 percent Actress are South Indian itself, fair skin South Indians ,but fair skin obsession is real, but all these girls are all South Indian. But Bollywood is also same , 90 percent Actress are from 1 state punjab they are only 2 percent of North India

In Kannada, most popular female leads are Rachita Ram, Radhika pandit, Rashmika Mandanna, Pranita Subhash etc etc. all are kannadigas. There are female leads from other states too but most popular ones are kannadigas. It is ok to hire to non-kannadigas- that’s equal opportunity! But, so far the ones who connect with mainstream kannada movie goers are kannadigas. It has more to do with their kannada fluency, accent and ability to capture the emotion.
