Here in Australia, there is a big difference in price between SB2000 and SB3000. I have a question, I know that the SB2000 does have the ease of installation/setup as the SB3000 and has to be set up more manually. But if I was able to do a good job with the SB2000, then how far away is it performance-wise to the SB3000? I am almost sure to go for twin SB2000. Unless I can be convinced to go for the twin SB3000?

I have an SB-3000 and was able to do an A-B comparison with a buddy's PB-1000 Pro. My living room is open on both sides and has a right turn into the dining room giving it a total air space of around 2000 cubic feet. The actual AV area is around 10x13' and a sub can only be placed in the right front corner. I had extensive discussions with SVS which included sending them a diagram of the living room and its measurements. Both of their guys that I spoke to thought that the SB-3000 would work well with this setup so in it came. The system consists of a Denon X3800 AVR, a front array with RSL CG5-CG25-CG5s and four SVS Prime Elevations as F/R Heights. Both subs were switched in and out of the same corner location and had fresh Audyssey calibrations done. Test content was the race scene in Ready Player One, several scenes in Aquaman and Blade Runner 2049. We used Atmos and Auro-3D to test. The 3000 was set to -18db from its -20 calibration level and the 1000 Pro was at -17db. The Denon was set to -30 db volume. After extensive testing there was not much obvious difference between the two subs. Bass was deep and substantial on both but the 3000 did sound a bit more "alive" at times, especially when Ready Player One was running. Auro-3D sounded better than Atmos on most tests. Both subs could vibrate my couch seat cushions when reaching down low. If the 3000 was pushed to its very outer limits volume wise there might have been a hint of distortion but I wouldn't normally do that so it wasn't a showstopper. Now here's the oddity. When switching from the 1000 Pro to the 3000, the latter souded a bit louder. Maybe it was just more refined but whatever it was, both if us heard it. I spoke to SVS about it and no explanation could be offered but it was definitively real. Overall my impression was that for a sealed sub, the SB-3000 compares favorably to the PB-1000 Pro. You can't go wrong with either box but if space and aesthetics are issues, the SB-3000 is worth a serious look.

@joentell
@joentell 4 года назад
I reviewed the SB2000 and SB3000. I think it really would depend on the size of the room. The 3000 series has more maximum output which you'll need if you have a larger room. If not, the frequency response difference isn't huge. You also should consider whether the app control/DSP in the 3000 series is important to you.

I'd go with ported in my 17x22 room if I had the space. Unfortunately with a 8 Foot pool table, large couch and dartboard, I don't have room for a large deep subwoofer or even big speakers. So I just opted for mounting small NHT Super Zeros for main speakers on the wall and a SVS SB2000 that is compact enough to not get in the way of playing pool. It's quite surprising how well it turned out. Just having one SB2000 in one corner can shake the room. I could even add duals for even bass throughout. But ouch at that price.

People today are spoiled by choices, especially home subs. The SB-3000 I bought cost me $1099 in gloss black. Just a few years ago, $1000 would buy you little more than a woofer from a box store. You know, those cheap port "ht" subs that have a ton of 60hz but not much below 40 where it should be. You really needed to drop a couple grand or more to get an actual sub. And the ones that output over 90db at 20hz were 15 or 18", huge and heavy. The compact Sb3000 exceeds that, and is much smaller and lighter. It's a great time to be an audiophile. You just don't need a $4000 servo sub. I should blame Joe for steering me toward SVS when my 15 year old sub died in April 2021. While numbers don't lie- I have to caveat the monolith sub. It is awesome, especially for under $500 which normally buys a toy-like woofer that won't sub. There is no doubting it's power. That being said, I prefer a sealed sub for my systems. I can control it better and I get more musical definition/articulation. So for MY application, a sealed sub is the only way I'll go. I run my HSU VTF-15 mKII in sealed for my HT. When I ran ported, it just sacrificed quality for boom. That being said, the Monolith has to be the most powerful sub for under $500 ever made. 16hz? That used to mean a $4000 18" velodyne or bag-end infrasub.

AlexCity actually went through multiple brands. First i had a smaller one from focal, which was, for its size pretty decent but too boomy and not powerful enough. Then i decided i wanted something more powerful so i landed on a klipsch 112, which was definitely more powerful but basically i could still hear the sub (and yes they were properly set up) and for music it was floppy. So i decided why not give svs a shot, they are THE name in the game after all. And after getting the sb2000 in, it made a big difference although i didn’t like the finish. It was way more powerful(albeit a tad more expensive) a lot tighter but i could still localize it and didn’t integrate well with the speakers i had. So after scowering forums i landed on arendal and i ordered one while i still had the svs. Four days later i returned the svs after comparing them in my room. I couldn’t localize the sub, the finish was so.. amazing and i thought i would leave a lot of power behind but i didn’t, i found my perfect sub :D

Joe N Tell certainly. For US viewers, svs is a good way to go because they are us based. Unfortunately due to taxes and shipping, their value proposition in the EU is much lower and their pricing is higher. It’s the same with emotiva. In the eu, there’s arendal sound for more premium speakers (or midrange in the audio world)(they also ship to the US), there’s XTZ which are very cinema based and make a stacked 3x12 inch sub, and there’s teufel which is more of a budget oriented brand. All of them are respected companies here and on european hifi communities.

I might be an extreme minority here, but I honestly wish the SB3000 is just a slight bit wider and taller. It's currently 15.2", but it'd be nice if it's 17". @joentell
@joentell 5 лет назад
I don't think a power inverters would be good. It goes me thinking. Imagine if SVS made a plug-in setup where you would wire it up normally, but there could be a plug where you could just plug in a removable subwoofer. It could handle power and the audio connection. That way, you could take out the sub if you need more space or going to place where you're worried about someone taking the sub.
@JoshM7
@JoshM7 5 лет назад
Depending on the car, it's not as hard to install an amp as you might think. I believe they're (the auxillary outlet) normally 15 amps, so around 180w or possibly sightly more since the voltage in the car is normally higher while running. (15amps x 12volts) The SB 3000 is 800w RMS and while you'll get loud with 150w, you're probably not going to know what the limits are and could go over the limit and blow the fuse. (Not the end of the world, but eh) If you can buy the SB 3000, you can instead have someone install an amp for you can get a proper sub later on. (The Dayton Ultimax 10 sealed does very well in my car, but if you want it to dig to 20hz and shake the car that low, you'll want it ported)

Question: You've call SVS subs "musical," and I get it.Years ago when I bought my current gear (Rotel 500-watt mono amps feeding B&W 802Ds) I realized I needed a sub for 5.1 movies and *potentially* to "help" the 802Ds at the low end (not that they really need it). Movie-watchers want to feel the explosions and thuds, so accuracy is more or less optional. On the other hand, for a sub to play music, the people at Velodyne (now Audio Research Germany) emphasized not only flat response, but also distortionless response. The special voice coilS in my Velodyne permitted it to incorporate a feedback loop such that the sub could produce a consummately accurate tone, to accompany the rest of the "instruments" in my system. So, with that as introduction, what replacement to the failing Velodyne would you recommend to an audiophile from within the SVS (or some other) product lineup? Thanks in advance from some who's been listening with critical ears for 50 years.
@joentell
@joentell 3 года назад
It sounds like what you're describing with Velodyne is a servo system. I agree with what you've said about minimizing distortion. SVS doesn't use servos, but on their PB16 Ultra for example, they use a driver with a huge 8" voice coil. Having a big voice coil and strong magnet (strong motor structure) along with powerful amps allow them to control the movement of the cone the way a servo would.

Let me preface this conversation by stating that I have Vulcan ears. Let me also say that I once worked in a very high end audio shop in Mt. View, CA. . . Muons, Blades, $55k turntables, etc. Hence, I have some mild experience & have heard all manner of audio equip. Currently, my entire home theater is SVS ultra. . . towers, center, surrounds. I have had the SVS SB-1000s, then upgraded to 2000 Pro. With respect to the aforementioned 2, yes I could hear a very mild and/or faint noise floor with my ear right on top of the cone. However, when I backed away to the listening position (10'-12') it disappeared. I then decided to take a step up using the SVS upgrade program to the SB-3000s. The noise floor on these was nearly twice as audible, & I could most definitely hear them from the listening position. SVS sent me 2 amps. One was DOA, & the 2nd was a tad worse than the originals. I was told that the SB-4000 & Ultras don't have this issue. Strange how the "monkey-in -the-middle" of their lineup is the only one to have that issue. I was told by someone @ SVS that most people don't have a problem with noise floor in the 3000s, or don't care. Further, I was told that I am in the 1% that can hear it. I guess they don't engineer it for the minority that have exceptional hearing. I suppose my "OCD" is some form of disability. Isn't that some form of racism? ;) Needless to say, I sent them back & reinstated the SB-2000 Pros to my system. On a positive note, SVS did say they would keep my upgrade program open indefinitely until they can resolve the issue.

You are correct that room gain and room modes can affect the response a ton. Also, bass management on most modern AVR's can help flatten out a response. I still think it's important to start with a flat response in either case. A sub with a poor response will likely be made worse due to room interaction, not better. Room EQ and bass management can only help so much. I think most budget subs are a bit underpowered and so they tune their enclosures for high output rather than (loudness) rather than low frequency extension.

You're room itself has more effect on bass and can effectively make a good sub sound like crap and a smaller shitty sub sound good. Some of thebigger subs from SVS sound much better in bigger rooms. It's putting out so much low end it is possibly passing you by and you won't hear the bass. I've had junk 15 inch woofers in speakers sound beautiful just because of the room it was in. The room I have now is VERY hard to hear low frequencies but yet all the walls are shaking and making racket. You need wood floors in my opinion. Every room I've heard that was excellent was wood. This place I went to had a room built that cost 15K and was sound proof, 2 doors.... dead silent inside and sounded absolutely insane. The subwoofer was some THX 12 inch sub but sounded better than anything I've ever heard just because of the room. They're good at that too. After making this video, I was like, damn, I forgot to mention that. They're everywhere it seems. But they really do make a good product. My fellow RU-vidr Youthman is reviewing the Monoprice Monolith subs. I'm curious how those compare.

@@joentell I bought a SVS ported 12 inch in 2006 right when they were starting up. NSD model maybe? it was huge worked great but again huge! i know 1 or 2 or more of the original SVS founders have moved on so I am not sure if SVS is still that special type product. or just more like everything else in the price range

Top selling subwoofers? Top 15: 5 of them are Klipsch, SVS doesn't make the list until the 15th spot, they are not popular and are overpriced!
