The problem with tolls is that even if the tolls are a stop gap measure to pay for the widening of I 81, tolls never go away. Years after the project is completed tolls are still going to be there. Once a revenue stream is established governments will never do away with a source of income.

@@u686st7 And, don't forget another goodie: "We're from the govt and we're here to help." Here in New York City, we have so many tolled roads, it's insane. The major problem with the tolls that are controlled by the MTA is that they are designed to generate a surplus that is then siphoned (shifted as siphon implies deceit) from the bridge or tunnel property to the LIRR and MNR railroads it also controls. The salt in the toll wound is that the MTA can't do anything inexpensively. Here are the one-way tolls for their crossings: E-ZPass® : $6.55 Mid-Tier: $8.36 Tolls by Mail: $10.17 There is no more actual cash payments. E-ZPass rates apply to NYCSC E-ZPass customers only. I drove I-81 in Virginia for the first time a few weeks ago. First, I was impressed with the beauty of the countryside. Second the good condition of the roadway itself. Third, the volume of traffic (yup, lotsa trucks.) and finally, how well it moved. I had to bypass a backup southbound but the detour was not too difficult or time consuming. I understand the challenge and agree planners must look ahead. It’s way above my pay grade.

I drive it daily between exits 24 and 118 and most truckers actually try to keep from blocking it up, but you get the occasional renegades--especially in the morning--who don't care and will block the passing lane for 3 miles or more at a time. I would say businesses need to be cognizant of the clutter and only make wise logistical decisions. I won't name any names, but I do front door deliveries and though my deliveries go further south than exit 24, we were recently forced to move from a terminal at exit 98 to exit 118, while those who stayed at the exit 98 terminal pass us every morning as they come up to exit 118 to make their deliveries. There are some "reasons" for this, and there are equal and opposite "reasons" why it should not have happened, and then when you weigh in the clear logistics of the interstate travel, time and cost, it is a no-brainer that this should all be reversed--and it still could be, we'll see.

Before I watch, I imagine it's because of all the traffic trying to avoid East Coast metros on I-95, as well as people trying to avoid traffic through Atlanta and the big 3 North Carolina metros on I-85. You could extend this further south, along I-40, I-75, and I-24 in Tennessee until you reach I-59 outside Chattanooga, then pretty much to New Orleans. It's all the old US Hwy 11 corridor.

Hey Milage Mike, I'm a truck driver from Memphis and I've been driving I-81 for about 5 years now running dedicated freight to Philadelphia, Albany, NY, Harrisburg, PA and back. I-81 has to be the most nerve racking interstate I've ever driven and I drove trucks in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its frustrating to see infrastructure planned solutions being abandoned for financial or political reasons. This same thing happened with Tennessee's proposal to build a toll road around Nashville on I-40 which is another garbage interstate with massive traffic. The residents voted against any tolling in the state and now they can deal with our slow governed trucks clogging up the roads and delaying food, fuel, and fun. Ohio and Kentucky really has a winning formula.

I am someone who has travelled most of the length of I-81 yearly for 55 years. First 30 years I lived in Upstate NY and traveled to Florida to see relatives yearly. Then moved to Atlanta and go north to Upstate NY to see friends and relatives, travelling I-85N to I-77N to I-81N all the way to Binghamton, NY. The truck traffic has gotten worse every year. The worst is through VA until you get to I-80 in PA. What I do notice is that the truckers themselves make the traffic worse, especially in VA. That is not just me saying this, but also trucker friends of mine too. I-81 in VA is mostly rolling hills. Traffic backs up because one trucker will decide to pull out and pass another truck going downhill and won't get passed that truck. Then uphill will stay side by side and lose ground. Then try and get passed the same truck on the next downhill, and again not make it, as traffic backs up behind both. I have gotten behind trucks doing this countless times. One time it lasted for nearly 25 miles and I could not even see the end of the traffic backed up behind us. If truckers in VA would follow better highway etiquette, like they do in most other states I've travelled, it would make a difference in the traffic issues. I don't know what it is about VA truckers, but they seem to be the biggest jerks of any state I've driven in. And many trucker friends of mine agree.

Well the state of Virginia sure has a lot of personalized plates. Sensing a sort of superior mentality maybe? Maybe each trucking firm that trains it’s drivers thereby pass that down to the trainee. I realize that they have schedules to meet, but guess what? They’re not the only ones. That goes for passenger cars as well. Somehow I get the impression that many of them are in some kind of video virtual reality game. I81 is like a race track. Then there are the total slow pokes. Playing with their phones, perhaps even texting? I see them in the stores with their heads down and focused totally on their phones, not even bothering to look up to see if they’re going to walk right into another person. One caused me to wreck 3 months after I retired by brake checking me. I have seen what happens when trucks tailgate each other and one stops short due to traffic slowdowns. Or change lanes and don't look to see if there is a car beside them before they do. No one living here wanted tolls to pay for improvements when VDOT and the General Assembly didn't hesitate to spend money on widening 95 and 64 in NoVa and Tidewater. So at least there is SOME money being spent on widening 81 now and hopefully it will continue and widening will continue. We just need drivers to be more observant when changing lanes, and not speeding up to trucks then slowing down to a crawl to pass said trucks, THAT will cut down on the amount of wrecks we have.

I've never had issues with I-81 to begin with. My family moved to North Carolina years ago, but most of our relatives are still up in the NYC area. Swinging out onto I-81 to stay the hell away from the coast became our preferred route heading north, so I've driven a large portion of it's northern length many times now. It became preferred because to be frank its a way nicer drive with consistently FAR less congestion then alternative options that hug the coast more. At least in the northern stretch of it we drive there are really only a handful of areas where it passes near a few larger (though still in the grand scheme of things fairly small) urban centers, but even their the congesting usually isn't too great. To honest for me at least I've never really had issues with it or see much need for improvement. I actually kind of prefer it's smaller scale, ultimately traffic finds a way to fill however many lanes you give it anyway, so adding more lanes probably wouldn't actually change much long term. Maybe it's way different for people that use certain stretches every day, but as someone who semi-regularly drives half a dozen hours along a bunch of it I don't really see a super pressing need for expansion over most of it's length, a few targeted projects near the urban centers maybe, Roanoke as mentioned in this video would be one such example, but I'd seriously dispute assertions that it needs to be three, let alone four lanes over it's entire length. I also think the bitching about not being able to pass trucks at times is pretty stupid, those trucks are usually pretty much doing the posted speed limit (if not a bit higher much of the time) so once you cut the crap people complaining about being 'blocked' by them are in most cases basically complaining about being unable to speed effectively.

As some one like yourself passing through, it is understandable that you wouldnt appreciate the horror show stretches of I81 could be! I lived very near to the convergence of I 81 & I 83 in Harrisburg area many years ago and it was frequently a bottle neck at rush hour times and any time there was an accident involving a truck. if it was seriousness, vehicles would exit parts of it, go through parts of town to pick it up at a further exit, causing crazy amounts of congestion on local roads! Point being, it is a headache for the locals who rely on it daily or have the traffic spill over to local roads.
@Tk3997
@Tk3997 Год назад
@@inconnu4961 That's like every interstate that goes trough any notable population center ever though, and to be honest the evidence that widening actually helps with these issues is pretty mixed. Traffic has a habit of expanding to fill available space unless you get into just really crazy overcapacity, but then you're basically just wasting money. The fact certain limited parts of it that go through urban areas have congestion issues isn't really a good reason to suggest widening the entire thing to me. Large parts of it are going through pretty rural areas with minimal population and to be brutally frank I see very little reason to waste billions widening those stretches. Like I said targeted projects in some spots like you're saying might be called for, but these plans to like double it's width along it's entire length seem likely to be pretty pointless at best or a shitty scheme to impose unnecessary tolls for revenue purposes at worst.

As a trucker, I appreciate this video. A couple things about tolling 81. There are so many tolls in the eastern US. It costs over 300 dollars in tolls on the PA turnpike for trucks with annual increases expected for at least 14 more years. It has led to many of us seeking alternate routes. Tolls are how these kinds of roads get clogged. There are so many truck stops both of corporate and private ownership. Tolls could really hurt their business. Take for example the truck stop at exit 205. That is almost a tourist attraction for trucks and they are improving it to be even better. Also with the interstates that are concurrent in spots (64 and 77) would those be tolled as well? I'm not sure how I would answer these questions since I'm not an engineer, but I am against tolling it.

I hear you. I hate tolls myself and PA tolls are over the top. The first company I worked for prohibited us from using it because of how ridiculous they were. But.... until the states figure out something else, they need money from somewhere. 10 Years from now probably less than half the vehicles on the road will be subject to gas taxes, and worse, those taxes are usually fixed at a set amount per gallon, not a percent. So as inflation goes up, and construction costs more, state will have even less money to do anything. I also hate uncle sam knowing anything about my driving habits, but long term, the fairest option is probably some sort of road use tax tied to your vehicle's registration with all gas taxes and tolls then removed (except possibly from certain bridges/mountain roads- there is an argument for tolls on expensive to maintain bits of infrastructure.)

People rave about the fall leaves--but don't give them more than a glance or you might be in trouble. Also, I don't like the idea of a "car only" lane, since I drive close to the speed limit. They have widened a few small sections in Rockbridge County which is a long uphill grade and have a new plan to do the same in Northern Augusta and Southern Rockingham counties which will help. The two major issues are even in those widened areas trucks will move over to the left lane which they are not supposed to do because there seems to be No enforcement of the law. That alone sort of kills the idea behind the third lane. The second issue is when there is an accident and traffic exits I81 say on to Rt. 11 which parallels much of I81 the local Sheriff Depts or State Patrol makes NO effort to help with the traffic flow. They just ignore the problem and it quickly becomes gridlock. The Weyers Cave area in Augusta County is a prime example of that where the lights there are just not able to handle any increased flow of traffic and it is a nightmare. Considering there is RT. 11 there could be improvements made to that for traffic flow during emergencies which would make such events less of a strain. Bottom line is they need to widen the darn thing for the long term solution but when you leave such things up to politicians you are pretty much screwed.

Sadly, the road looks JUST the same as it did in the 90's.... and THAT is the problem. If you look at I-95 and I-75 - both interstates have been largely expanded to 3 lanes in each direction, rather than I-81's 2 lane standard. I-81 MUST be widened to allow for this massive expansion in traffic.

As someone who has logged thousands of miles on I-81 on two wheels and four wheels (sometimes more) I can tell you the absolute answer to the problems on I-81 (just like most highways where this is a similar issue) is easily solved by TWO improvements. Number one is the expensive part but stop delaying the inevitable and build a third lane. Left lane for vehicles under 26,000 lbs that can maintain the speeds and NO BUSES!! Funding for this type of improvement is already in place with the revenue already being generated. Like charity donations, only pennies on the dollar make it to fund what you think. STOP padding pockets of legislators, STOP overpaying huge construction companies for these projects (and you know they are padding pockets too) and set a timeline for construction phases to be completed or daily fines to the construction company for the delays. Number two has much lower costs as number one but also generates revenue without the needs of taxes or tolls. MORE Law Enforcement. Instead of sitting there in the median only wanting to chase down those who speeds fall into "Reckless Driving" I suggest non-stop patrolling. Pull over trucks that are taking miles to pass another. Pull over the tailgaters. Pull over the left lane hogs backing up traffic. Virginia already has the law against '"Traveling in the left lane" and need to ENFORCE it. More cops, more tickets, more revenue that goes to the local county that the ticket was wrote in. Thus the local governments can PAY more towards I-81 improvements.

And as a NC resident I will not support higher taxes or tolls on i95 to upgrade it. Ncdot is already so corrupt (run by developers) that nothing should be done indefinitely until the developers are not the only ones on the dot board. Also, their budget is gigantic and they take decades to finish even one highway project while wasting time and money. And often when they finish a section of highway they are back again in another year to tear out and “redo” what they worked on for the previous 10 years. The idea that 540 and 77 needed toll roads is a complete lie when we already pay the 8th highest gas tax in the country. Where does all that money go? Into the pockets of the developers. Also, in case you don’t know the dot swindlers were holding property for projects for over 30 years without paying for the land. It took a class action lawsuit from the property owners to get the nc Supreme Court to order the dot to pay 1$ billion to buy the properties they had been holding hostage for 30 years. The dot is run by swindlers and corrupt developers and it has been this way for over 50 years and the feckless stooges in Raleigh will do nothing about it. Until all of this is blown up in a hurry and replaced by responsible people there should be a complete moratorium on all new taxes and revenues diverted for new road projects and there should be laws passed to prevent any and all toll roads being implemented in nc indefinitely (in perpetuity).

Susan shouldn't need to drive 0.25 miles to the grocery store, but I'll happily pay for a highway so Bob can drive his truck 250 miles from the distribution center to the store so Susan can keep buying her groceries. And ironically, I-95 v.s. I-81 kinda proves the whole point of not building freeways in downtowns; nobody wants to use I-95 for long distance travel because you gotta contend with intracity traffic, as compared to I-81 separating the intercity traffic from the intracity traffic and proving a rather pleasant experience for anyone going long distance.

You will encounter the ocassional traffic build up due to the semis inability to pass another semi. It was always somewhat obvious me (I have an engineering background in Materials Science) that a 4 lane system (both ways) would be a semi-good solution to help the flow of traffic. 2 lanes dedicated for semis and 2 lanes dedicated for non-semis along long stretches. This can change as exits come in with clear signage to let drivers know when the semi/non-semi rule is transistioning. They can also implement variable speed limits for these transistions as needed. Overall, I love I-81 and it is my very part of the drive on my way up to Maryland from Texas. Much love to the truckers putting in the work to keep this country going!
