I actually kinda like that young turtles aren’t able to be sold, it keeps people from buying them as cute tiny little quarter sized pets and making an impulse purchase because they’re “just so darn cute and irresistible and it’ll stay small if I keep it in a small tank yadda yadda” I think if people really want a pet turtle they should be prepared to house an adult turtle, not buy one and like it for less than a year and then try getting rid of it because it’s not small and cute anymore. Sucks that dedicated people have limited options and usually won’t be able to enjoy that cute baby turtle phase but it’s worth it so we can weed out all the average Joe’s that just want a cute pet that they’ll end up abusing in less than a year because they don’t know turtle care or can’t afford proper care.
@GroundhogKim
@GroundhogKim 2 года назад
One time when I was much younger I made an impulse purchase, it was a gecko. I was so unprepared I didn't even know what species it was. I was lucky enough to know a family friend in the reptile hobby and thankfully he was able to take it in a few days after I bought it. Never buy based on feelings or looks, buy because you actually care and are ready.

Great video! I'm often asked if I'm worried about getting salmonella from my turtles. I tell them, "No! Cause I don't plan on licking them or putting them in my mouth." Lol The whole thing boiled down to parents not being responsible. Those DBTs are adorable! ❤🐢

I remember when I was younger (started turtle keeping around 5 or 6) I went to chinatown la and got some turtles. They lived in that dumb old plastic carrier and one died. That worried me so I started doing endless research. Mom buy me a filter! Mom buy me a 50 gallon tank! Mom buy me water melon! It was pretty insane but I got the supplies. I never touched them fortunately since I knew about salmonella prior because of school. Turtles are still alive.

Well, this makes me feel better. The RES hatchling I found in my parents’ garage is about 2 months old now, and I have been freaking out every time I clean its tank. Like I glove up and then sanitize every surface that possibly could have been touched by me or the water. I still can’t believe that I have a RES and take care of it like it’s my own flesh and blood child. Where I live they are very invasive and overpopulated. I used to go fishing at a small-ish private lake, and I finally stopped because the only thing that got on my hook were turtles. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Now here I am spending a lot of money to keep this thing alive, happy, and healthy. I even talk to it like it can understand me every time I walk by its tank. 😂

@@myaaghasi5914 Yeah, as someone who lives kinda in the area, law enforcement just doesn't care. It's become too normalized to be taken care of, and ofc the police just don't care, in general... It frustrates me seeing all the turtles, as I have some myself (impulse buy from my parents long ago and a neighbor, who just handed her turtle to us), and I've been struggling a bit to learn everything and put them in better living conditions. I can't imagine what it's like for people without the resources or awareness -- that you don't just shove a turtle in a tank and call it a day. Just seeing the way they're all handled in LA, it saddens me. They need better conditions than those they're put in, and they're wonderful creatures... The least we can do is try to care for them properly, and do our research :(

I imagined the profit to loss ratio also had a big impact. Pet stores use breeders and only a portion of the offspring live long or at all from over breeding pairs or inbreeding so selling only the adolescent or adult animals leads to less maintenance (having to remove the dead ones from display tanks, potentially quarantining the remaining ones) and less returns/refunds. It's more commonly known with snakes since they're bred for specific traits to an extreme and once a trait is successfully bred that snake becomes a breeder snake to get more offspring with that trait.

What kind of foliage do you have in your tank? My hubby found a hatchling all dried out and stuck, eyes to the skies in grass. He brought it home. I researched like a mad woman. Daniel is my son. No salmonella here. And we wash our hands right after handling him, which is rare. I have a super hyper four year old and he washes his hands when touching Daniel. I do feed him in his tank though, but we got that good bacteria going and keeping it clean! Thanks for this video! I had no idea that's why they weren't selling them anymore.

Turtles NEED UVB Ray's for proper growth & health. If your turtles are outside, GREAT! They will get the needed Ray's from the Direct sunlight. However, if they are inside, & the light they are getting is through a window, they are getting NONE of those much Needed rays.. Glass filters out 100% of the UVB Ray's. Screen filters out around 50% of UVB Ray's..

Part of the reason turtles got so popular was TMNT. So people started carrying turtles to cash in on the new pet craze. When they were revealed to be RES, the popularity of that species went sky high so they could sell droves of them to kids who wanted a ninja turtle. RES, however, are horrible for beginners to have, at least without a lot of prep. They get big, they grow fast, and even for turtles they are very messy. They are also some of the hardiest turtles ever, so they can live in just about any freshwater environment, and I’ve even seen some wandering around in brackish water. Add that to the popular myth that turtles grow to the tank size and you had a bad situation. When the parents got tired of them or the turtles didn’t stay small, they would wait for the kids to be out of the house and dump the turtles wherever they could, which would lead to the kids wanting a new one to repeat the cycle. Another thing that kept happening was kids getting sick. Anyone who keeps aquatic turtles knows that they pee, A LOT, and it’s one of their defensive options. When younger kids put the baby turtles in their mouths, it would pee to make them let go causing the kids to get sick from having a unhygienic turtle peeing in their mouths. Or even swallowing them if the turtles were small enough, so all that bacteria went straight into their bodies and caused major problems. Even under bad conditions turtles are some of the most bulletproof pets you can get. Even the shortest lived ones live decades if given the space. For example, Sylvester Stallone still has Cuff and Link from Rocky and they are thriving, if a bit stunted from what I saw. You can tell Stallone cares for them a lot, since they weren’t just one time props in a movie, they’ve been with him since Rocky and not gotten rid of like most animals used at the time.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s the Woolworths had tanks full of them . Unfortunately, our parents thought that the plastic round bowls with the islands and trees were a perfect habitat 😩and they didn’t live too long . But we never got sick from them . If you ever go to Turtle Pond in Central Park ( next to the Castle behind the Met Museum of Art ) in warm weather you would be shocked at how filled it is with all of those grown up pet store turtles . People bring their kids there .. it is an amazing sight. My grandsons really want a turtle. I was thinking of taking a net and visiting a pound near their house. I nearly died of sepsis caused by salmonella from cleaning out my little corn snake’s tank. I’d had it for 6 years with no problems, because with young kids, I was a germaphobe. I’d swear I could feel bacteria on my hands and washed very frequently. That day was no different. Our best guess is that because the substrate was completely dried out, when I emptied that monster into a trash bag in the garage, it was windy. The theory is that I ingested enough that had become airborne or my hair blew across my face and I repeatedly cleared it from my vision, touching the hair that had blown into my mouth and then cleared by my nasty hands that one way or another, I was infected by salmonella. 6 hours later I was nauseated, which lasted s as ll night, then during the early morning things began exploding from the other direction. By 10am I was in the ER with a 102.7F fever. By the time I was called back I had no control of what was being expelled from my body and my temperature was 104.5F. I was admitted to a ward, but some time later I woke to find my bed being moved around the hospital by a team of people wearing what looked like HAZMAT suits. I asked where I was headed, and learned I was headed to Intensive Care. I stayed unconscious there, mostly, with sepsis that was actively trying to kill me while the ICU docs gave me gallons of antibiotics that, 6 days later, worked, killing the infestation of my body. After a bout with hospital-acquired pneumonia, a month later I went home. What I didn’t know was that the Levoquin, a Fluoroquinolone antibiotic with two Black Box warnings that I’d been given gallons of- followed through on those Black Box warnings, and I’m a useless, bedridden lump of searing pain that nothing controls, and I’m only going to get worse. We gave the snake away to someone who fully understood the risks- my Primary Care Doctor. It has been 8 years since the sepsis. My life expectancy is shorter, but no one can say how much shorter. My point, and I did have one, was that I washed my hands. In scalding hot water using antibacterial soap until they were raw. More than once. And I was still infected with salmonella by a reptile that was kept according to the directions found on the Internet from a reputable source. I still wasn’t safe. Leave reptiles to professionals. It truly isn’t worth the risk to own one as a pet. Get a dog. Or a pet rock. They’re less likely to lead to the place I’m in and cost millions of $$$$$ from the initial ER visit to the multiple doctors I still have to see and the prescription copay for covered meds or full price for the uncovered ones.

It was for the wrong reasons, but it was a good thing the sale of baby turtles was banned. The industry you describe of breeding baby sliders in bulk to sell at malls and corner stores led to a widespread animal disaster (which you mention) and an even worse ecological disaster. Sliders are invasive across the entire continental USA, Europe, South America, Australia, and Asia, where they compete and frequently outcompete endemic species due to being large, hardy, and aggressive. If anything, more legislation to prevent the spread of slider turtles via irresponsible and unethical breeding and sales is needed to have any hope curbing their spread. But it's probably too late, seeing as how prevalent they are now all over the world and how the issue is only likely to get worse as the climate warms, creating even more suitable habitat for them. The little guy in my profile picture is a baby RES that was found in a university campus pond, likely released there by a careless student who didn't know what they were doing was wrong and potentially dangerous.
