Why Aren't Longbows Used in the Olympics?

With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics under way, the archery events might be confusing to casual viewers who are used to seeing wooden longbows. Why don't modern Olympians use medieval bows in a modern precision sport?

As a bowyer who makes traditional self bows, there is something about a single piece of wood that is hand-cut, shaped and tillered that you just don't get from shooting a modern bow made from synthetic materials. It even feels different. And I started archery using modern bows. But after experiencing primitive archery, I doubt I'll ever go back.

Yes, and you are not alone. It's a bit like my friend that owns a 65 427 Vette, and a new high performance contemporary version (couple of years old). I asked which one he liked to drive better. He said the new vette was superior in pretty much every way, but the visceral nature of the older model makes it more fun to drive, even though it's more likely to kill you. Now if he was doing a 500 mile trip, the answer would probably be different, especially in a location where AC is a requirement.

Primitive archery and building bows is all I shoot. I’m also fascinated by crossbows. Recurve crossbows. I have 5 of them. I don’t hunt with them but enjoy shooting them and keeping one by the bed for home defense.

Same here. I mean, I fully acknowledge the equal degree of skill and effort that Olympic-style archers put into mastering their form of archery, but I prefer instinctive/barebow setups just because I'm more of a jack-of-all-trades plinker type, rather than the sort who likes to min-max for one hyper-specific scenario/setup.

*Why aren't compounds used?* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YYZ5aDxaqmI.html This video mostly addresses why _modern_ recurve is used over traditional recurve/longbow. Compound *is* used in modern competition. It's lack of inclusion in the Olympics is more to do with the Olympic program schedule. Archery was re-introduced into the modern Olympics in 1972, before compound competition was a thing. Inclusion in the Olympics is an uphill battle as there are logistical and financial issues with expanding the Olympics to cover more events. Compound (and barebow) are used in World Archery events. *That's not a musket. It's a blunderbuss.* I know. It's a prop from an older video. I don't actually call it a musket in this video, only that I "raise the point about...muskets". I don't have a musket lying around. The point is that insisting archery goes back to medieval traditional bows is like demanding that modern sport target shooters go back to muzzleloaders. Those tools were made for a practical purpose first, not a sporting purpose. The modern sport uses purpose-made equipment.

I thinks its because the Western powers controlled invention of modern Olympics from the early 1900's and there are entrenched commercial organizations controlling what happens. Got to have viewers and sponsors and $$$. We still throw javelins, discus, etc., but most people have no idea primitive archery exists; if it becomes more popular it could be added.

@@michaelkimball7476 Specific to archery, modern target archery was largely driven by the formats and organisations already in place, centralised on Western archery (Britain, Belgium, United States). The initial archery events in the early Olympics were based off these localised rule sets, which was quite exclusive and not spectator friendly. While archery was off the Olympic schedule until Seoul 1988, the sport continue to advance on its own, adopting new round formats and equipment to be standardised in international competition. Since then, international archery has continued to attempt to make rounds more exciting and spectator-friendly through the introduction of knockout rounds and set points, whereas previous competitions (and most amateur competitions) only go off highest score at the end of the day.

Archery has not changed, it's the Olympic games. The Olympics changed from the practical warrior skills to impractical repetition skills. I left paintball as it passed from hunt and shoot with less than 25 balls a game on many acres of forest to tournament spray and pray with thousands of balls a game in a small field. Skill requirement are there, but are different and no longer on a practical standpoint. I am now getting into archery and practice daily with a longbow. Rest assured I will never get into anything with stabilizers and/or sights.

Olympic: I think it's more a descicion to go away from military technics as a result of the WW2. So most things are changed to something every land and people in the world can join into the sport. In the 60s there was a discussion about banning all sorts of weapon technics from the olymic games. The result of this discussion was to allow sports gear and not tactical of military based stuff. @@mrhoppy_9724 I don't think that is the actual reason. After all, it's no less physically demanding than ISSF shooting events. i saw a comment earlier of compound bows, if were talking about about modern standards and modern levels of precision, why not use a compound to be even more precise? to say that we use x kind of bow because its more precise its a bit of a logical fallacy as were all aware of the fact that theres “better” equipment to use. why not strive for precision or at least an attempt of it with longbows or other trad bows at 70 yards (or realistically if they would change it to something more reasonable). archers would adapt to that stipulation. for the reason to be why we use modern style bows because its just technologically more advanced, while logical quite admittedly, is a shallow reason. and yeah ill also throw in trad bows are way more difficult tool to use than modern equipment so itd probably make archery in the olympics cooler and more engaging for non archers cause it looks more “familiar” and objectively harder to do.
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 3 года назад
Compound bows are used in competition. Compound and recurve are the primary disciplines used in international competition, with barebow being a recent addition. Only recurve is in the Olympic schedule, however. There's no reason why all three disciplines can't be included, but that seems to be more of an issue of planning and organisation with the IOC than any sporting philosophy. As for making the Olympics look cooler, that's arguable. The quality of shooting would be far less. The excitement is built around who is scoring the most consecutive 10s rather than who misses more. As a benchmark, look at the Conquest Cup. The traditional Turkish event shoots at a board-sized puta target where only hits count, and the finalists don't often score more than 50% hits. It's not exactly edge-of-your-seat thriller. Exceptionally challenging to do, but not the pinnacle of precision that makes spectators feel excited.
@notapplicable531
@notapplicable531 3 года назад
@@NUSensei I like much of what you've said here, but you are still missing the points that equipment, target and distance can be defined so as to make the shooting within boundaries that show who is the best archer, and also interesting to the spectator. The Turkish event may only have scores at the 50% level. However, in Korean traditional archery, at national level events, a score of 13 out of 15 arrows, or 22 out of 25 might not get you close to winning, or placing. For my part, I've been there, shot a 13, had that situation, and that's just the way it is. I will say that scoring high is a better feeling even if the reward of a trophy or something isn't attained. I have seen on one occasion where three archers had a score of 15 and had to go to a shoot-off. It took two more rounds to get a winner. In the first round, two archers went 5 for 5. The second round was "sudden-death" and took three arrows to get a winner. The winner went 23 for 23. As to scoring, these competitions are: hit the target, one point. The target is 145 metres from the shooting line and two metres by 2.67 m. Judge for yourself whether you think this is easy or hard. Again, whether you think this would be exciting or boring to watch, that's up to you. Competing or watching are two entirely different feelings.
@elijahoconnell
@elijahoconnell 3 года назад
@@NUSensei well id have to counter your point with the precision aspect of it being more interesting with at least my opinion of it being that the repetitiveness of the precision is well repetitive. when you throw in more primitive equipment (even aside from any one of our fanboy fantasies of trad archery lol) the variability and error we would see would make it way more interesting because of that higher chance of failure the shots thatre taken that hit are more impressive and even more so with more precise shots. to add to this, we could still absolutely keep the same scoring and target, even if realistically an archer would be aiming at the target as a whole rather than the scoring rings themselves, yet i dont see that as being a reason not to keep our standard scoring. plus ofc with olympic archery, if it were to be trad or include trad, the archery would still be quite quality (as an aside i have a bitter taste in me for precision archery as a blindspot keeps me from using any sights, ergo trads way more accessible for me lol)

My thoughts exactly, if Olympic archery is about pure precision helped by the best technology then its well passed the point it should have been switched to shooting compound. Why hobble the competition by staying with a silhouette of an ancient stick bow (which I prefer to shoot). There's always grass roots arguments with Olympic competition, once you do the sums, take into account endless limb upgrades and corresponding change of arrows, compound works out significantly cheaper at the youth level.

I understand that the recurved shape of the limb is more efficient and faster than a straight bow limb, but is it the most accurate and precise method/platform of launching an arrow that can be achieved with modern engineering and materials? No time, no space. Olympics has added many new sports; skateboarding etc. Other sports are getting elbowed out. They were going to ditch fencing, for example. In canoeing, they've introduced 'GP racing', where the slalom boats drop in from a slide and race head to head. That's meant losing some other canoeing disciples. Currently it is all about viewers on TV. Beware, archery might not attract enough viewers and get ditched.

I think it'd be very interesting to see Olympic athletes use these outdated tools as a sort of self-handicap and see how well they perform, how they compare, and whether or not it gives them an appreciation for the current level of technology, as well as if the novelty of going old school has staying power.

Most people couldn't, even back in medieval times. Using war bow weights was a specialised skill that required many years of training. Heavy weights aren't conducive to precision shooting, as the balance shifts to power and penetration instead. Good for hitting a military target. Not very good for scoring points in contest.

So with that argument you're saying anyone can just pickup an olympic recurve bow and immediately get into the olympics. I think your argument can definitely be applied to modern compound hunting, but that's it. The goal of any modern competitive archery is high precision and accuracy over extensive distance. Simply a higher standard not capable with classic archery technology. The technology facilitates this higher degree of capability from the archer, but does not seek to remove the archer in any extent. But that's not true. Most people can't just pick up a compound bow and shoot it, let alone accurately. There is a massive human factor in any long distance shooting event, archery or rifle, long bow or compound - human factors that can't be engineered out, such as heart rate, breathing, muscle condition, release. That applies as much to compound as it does to a recurve, and equally to shooting events.

The difference between the musket and the longbow is that rifles are very much relevant outside sports, but bows are not. The longbow represents a tool that was also relevant outside of competition. If you argue that bows can still be relevant today we should look at fully kitted compound bows. The target recurve with sights and stabilizers is just the result of a set of arbitrary rules that has no relevance outside the sporting event. I would much rather see a true bare bow event. A standardized consistent longbow made from modern stable materials without protrusion, cutouts or shelves where "fixed distance hacks" like string walking is disallowed.

They are far more precise. Unfortunately, archery was re-introduced into the Olympic program in 1972, before compound became a formal competitive event. While WA has full control over what events and classifications in its own events (hence we now have Barebow), the IOC is limited by how much it can expand the program by how much host cities are able to sustain the Olympics.

It is like that for every aspect of the limits. Or can be entirely new Operating System such as Alien gas operating system which eliminates muzzle flip, etc. At the end of the day, you can only write a set of rules and the equipments will evolve to touch the limits imposed. And as long as the skill involved are more or less the same, that shapes the looks of equipment we see in various competitions today, not only for archery.

The modern hunting composite bow at 70lb can bang out as much power at point of delivery as a Mary Rose War Bow of far more poundage, due to the metal limbs (as one point) not taking as much energy up in accelerating them. Now a 100lb+ composite bow, say 130lb might be an interesting for the Olympics and absolutely terrifying in the mount of power it can deliver, with the right ammo of course. 70lb is just easier to pull but against a Medieval War Bow (high poundage long bow) the modern composite bow and equivalent ammo is it's equal.

"... precision ... people wouldn't take the shooting sports seriously if they were still using muzzleloaders ..." Guess what dud, Muzzleloaders were used fo competiton out to 1,010 yards, and are capable of sub minute of angle groups at that range. In the 1873 to 1910 period, the .45-70 was a popular black powder cartridge shooting a 350 to 500 grain bullet, used in internatonal shooting matches to 1,010 yards. Not some high speed light recoil small or medum bore, Again, 1 MOA and less groups - WITHOUT using a scope. Iron sights only. I for one would lke to see international and Olympic bare bow competition. Even if the range was "only" 50 to 70 meters. Bare bow takes a lot ore skill to shoot than a bow with sights, stabilizers, arrow rests, plungers, clicers, and all the other B.S. they stick on the recure bow. For that matter, why not compound bows to 100 to 125 meters? Most non competition archery users (hunters, plinkers, etc) use a compound bow. They cannot relate to a recurve bow, any more than they can a longbow or Mongolian/Turkish/Korean horse bow. Your excuses why no longbow/bare bow are B.S. If nothing else, they could reduce the range by 10 to 30 meters, using a target with a reduced x ring size. Perhaps a 25 meter pistol target at 40 to 60 meters? Indoor archery (World Cup and Olympic) are shot at what? 20 or 30 yards? Compound bows can be used for indoor archery, and Field Archery. Why not to 70 meters? People would still watch the copetitions. They watch the indoor matches, don't they? (An aside: A lot of "casual" shooters shoot in local, state, and regional indoor and 3D competitions. And that's at 9 gpp. At 8 gpp, which is more typical of outdoor target rigs, the speed differential is even greater. Now of course speed isn't the only reason behind the dearth of longbow limbs in the Olympics. Longbow ILF limbs tend to be designed for shorter risers than the standard 25" riser used for recurve limbs. A 17", 19", or 21" riser simply would not be competitive with a 25" or longer riser at the Olympic level. You could mount longbow limbs on a 25" riser to get around this, though you would sacrifice even more speed in doing so.

Most peoples are not even able to hold it steadily long enough to aim a single shot. It is a bit like the difference between a hunting rifle and a sniper rifle. Both are designed to shoot at targets that are at medium to high range, but a hunting rifle has to be carried a long time and has to be maneuvered in and aut of vehicles. A Sniper rifle is exclusevily designed to be the most acurate and durable, and therefor a lot heavier, because the mass/inertia of the weapon (bow and rifle alike) has a lot to do with follow through, and being as steady as possible. Which are both crucial for maximum accuracy.

Wow, I was going to ask why would anyone ask this question? Then I found your post... It's a bit like asking why we race modern sports cars instead of horse-drawn carriages.

@@heinzerbrew i actually did not wonder about it haha but i would not make that comparison, long bow and modern bow still work the same while sports car and horses well :P

@@vojinvmilojkovic7622 come on... you get the point. Fine compare it to: why not race the model T instead of modern race cars. Whatever, I don't think I care anymore.

@@heinzerbrew I get ya ofc :D I just know people tend to like historical thing and dont quite grasp the technological improvements as something that makes sense but more in a sense "if it works why add stuff" ... its could be like, why tenis players dont use wooden rackets anymore xd

While I definitely get your point, they‘d shoot compound at the olympics following that logic, as that is the most advanced bow-system nowadays. I guess there’s still more to it. I enjoy watching events featuring different bow-classes way more anyway.

@@NUSensei have you tried compound archery yet? I’m asking as I’m not aware of any video about that - which makes me wonder as you seem to be interested in basically any kind of bows. When I was a kid and teenager I loved compound bows, but nowadays I wouldn’t even be certainly interested in trying it, if I had the chance to. Personally, I think watching competitions with more “pure” bows is more exciting, as the results vary way more, so I’m not really missing compound bows from the olympics. But I definitely would love to see more kinds of bows featured. But well, the olympics aren’t made for featuring every facette of a sport or even every sport out there.

@@rontz That's one style I haven't done. I've almost gotten into it, but haven't had the time to dedicate to compound.

Why dont they use longbows? Answer: people like to see archers actually hit the target

Nah, you don't have to shoot at a target that looks like a pin head held at arms length.

Point taken but i think barebow should be considered at different ranges and different draw weight classes i think it would be popular.

Not only should longbows be used in the event, but the competitors should have to make it themselves over the first few days of the olympics.

I've shot traditional wooden bows with people who are into that side of archery and I get the appeal of it, but a modern recurve in my opinion is a better bow. The analogy of a classic vs modern sports car is spot on, although I would still like a modern sports car without traction control, ABS etc. Which is why I shoot a barebow.

Used compound bow for years until a friend lent me traditional English longbow and after much practice never looked back, its allot harder to master but everything is so much more satisfying, you feel the bow, and the shot so when you do make a good hit, its so much more satisfying. But it wasn't until I started making my own arrows, from oak dowels (Bunnings archery store, also started making bows for fun including layered ones), yes there is a failure rate but so cheap to make MEH, but found getting a tin of "liquid glass" mixing it 50/50 with a thinners and soaking the dowels left them still very flexible but 1/2 the failure out. ANYHOOooooo long story short, traditional longbows are more fun.

there are some girls in the Olympics using the medium saker 1 (the red one) so yes, i think mostly all the men should use at least the large one unless you have very little hands.
