For the third installment in our Race Metal Video Series, Miguel catches up with Bailey Newbrey from Sincere Cycles in Santa Fe to talk about why there's a lack of metal race bikes and what the cycling industry can do to shift the paradigm.

I love what you said about "forever bikes". I bought my forever bike, a Ti Seven, almost 20 years ago. It is now living with me here in Ecuador where I continue to ride it.

Very keen for more of this content! Miguel and Bailey are a great presenting pair and the content is super-timely and is an important conversation that doesn't seem to be coming up in the bike industry.

My wife and I both have steel Chumba Terlinguas. Not only are the frames built in Austin, but use US components from PMW and US made Velospec Elite HT tubing. Small quality brands for components have been here for years: our bikes use Industry 9, Paul Components, White Industries, Thomson Bike, Wolf Tooth, and ENVE wheels. Definitely “forever bikes”. It would be great to see you check out their shop!

What series of Deda Aluminum tubing? Aegis? Fire? or the much heavier unbranded tube set? It does make a difference.

Hard to know exactly without knowing the weights of the frame and fork, and where the material comes from to do a proper life cycle analysis, but that carbon fork probably has about 1/2 as much CO2e impact as the frame itself. This is a potentially interesting project, but the focus needs to be on the whole bicycle, not just the frame. As Trek has shown in their sustainability reports, the frame, while important, is not the whole story. Furthermore, it is near certain that you'll put more CO2 into the atmosphere transporting yourself and your metal bike from Santa Fe to San Marcos to race than buying a new carbon bike and staying home. All of my bikes are metal also, and I applaud the effort, but let's be real about the impact of a bike frame in the context of the whole bike and what you do with it.

Very important conversation to have for sure. Our trash is a big time problem. I don't think most people can comprehend what is happening to our planet and living space. I moved away from carbon about four or five years ago by contracting a titanium builder to make me a frame suitable for crits and it actually weighs in very competitively to the new carbon race bikes. Not one bit of carbon on it even with the components. I love that bike so much I have contracted another frame build in Baltimore to build me a classic steel bike using 10 speed Campy components that have been parked in my closet for many years that are still in their original boxes. I built up some new classic style wheels too. And rim brakes. It will never be a race bike but it will be one of those bikes that will last for decades. As destructive as racing is on bikes and how bad it is for our planet I don't see why people don't use their heads and common sense that says carbon is a bad idea.
