We've been working with singer/songwriter, internationally-renowned guitarist & producer Ariel Posen for years now and in that time, we've fielded countless questions from players about the wild gauge of guitar strings he plays, and why. So, we met up with Ariel at Nashville's Carter Vintage Guitars and asked him.
A huge thanks to Ariel, Jon Roncolato and the entire team at Carter Vintage for lending us their time and talents for this one.

People talk like heavier strings are better and more mature. Complete bullshit. Most of the greats played 8s and even 7s. But Ariel is unique and does it because it suits his playing and he genuinely prefers it for his style. But if youre playing heavier strings because stevie ray Vaughn did, rethink your approach. Also, stevie had really bad hand problems by the end of it.

One fundamental thing that's not mentioned here is the problem of inharmonicity of thick strings as you shorten the scale length. The very thick strings on a short scale length don't sound as good as thinner strings ultimately, and they sound really dull and wrong passed the 12th fret. Piano makers know that, and that's why short pianos don't sound as good as long pianos. But I understand that Ariel Posen prefers the playing feel of a short neck baritone especially if he doesn't play too often the thick strings passed the 12th fret.

I play with 12s mainly because I tune to Drop C and find it’s a perfect balance of tension for me. Also I have to have a wound 3rd. An unwound third just doesn’t feel or sound right. , at least in thicker gauges. I used to use Ernie Ball beefy slinkys but didn’t like the third sting plus I would constantly break the A string. Switched to Daddarios NYXLs and now XLs light jazz strings with a wound third and have absolutely no problems with them.

I broke a string and had to buy a set, they were out of the ones I used so I bought another pure nickel set that came with a 18-plain and 20-wound. I tried the wound because I never tried one (electric at least). I was really surprised to find that it sounded WAY brighter than the plain string, and I needed to bend it twice as deep to hit pitch. It lasted an hour.

Damn, when he played I was actually pleasantly surprised how good it does sound. So FAT and SRV vibes.. if I lived closer to a guitar tech I would try some of this too.

Setting up a guitar is something anybody can learn to do. Having a guitar tech is great but isn't essential. All the information is available for you on youtube to go for it yourself and put heavier gauges on.

Martin Heath well, going to a luther today because my acoustic is having resonance and intonation issues.

Flatland Sounds learn to fix it yourself mate. Intonation takes 5 minutes. If you play yourself you need to learn to be self sufficient. Especially in your case being so far away from a tech. I learned how to change pups set the neck relief action and intonate all from RU-vid. Anyone can do it.

I love you guys strings! In this video it would have been great to hear some chords. I was hopeful to see how open chords would sound with those strings and tuning. I watched the whole thing but I was like, “Dang, we hardly got to hear anything but a few single note lines!”

String gauges has become the guitar version of dick-measuring. Here's some food for thought - all your favorite guitar players from the 60s, who changed the world with their playing and sound ALL played 9s and didn't change their strings every ten minutes. ...lol, and of course this is all being played through the Emperor's New Amp.

I think the higher guage strings sound clunky. Didnt like the sound. Just my opinion.

I find plain 3rds sound better the bigger they get, def used to dislike my plain 3rd on 9's and 10's

He plays it like a resonator. They have crazy heavy strings too and they need the tension for their slide play. I get it. I love it. And that stratomule is divine

Exactly, that and the tuning he uses. Tuning down a 4th to B standard with 17 's is probably like using 11's in standard E which is still heavy for some people but def. playable.
