When you first learn to dive your instructor teaches you how to dive and how the equipment works but there are other guys and girls there at the dive site helping you out so you do things right, but who are these noble divers helping you out? These are Dive Masters. Dive Masters are the first tier of professional scuba divers in the PADI training regime and they act as skilled assistants to Instructors so you’ll often have one Instructor and a few Dive Masters on your course keeping you safe and teaching you how to dive because your Instructor can’t be everywhere at once.
Dive Masters have a rough life in the professional diving community and we do make fun of them but that’s because we were all Dive Masters at one point in our diving career, and much like the military or prep school there’s always a culture of bullying those beneath you. There are two main types of Dive Master out there; the leaders and the teachers. Leaders have just toured guides that lead groups of qualified divers around dive sites and getting them back to the boat safely and teachers are what Dive Masters are really made for, to act as teaching assistants as a sort of secondary Trainee Instructor.
But as with all diver qualifications Dive Master has it’s pros and cons so let's look at Why Becoming A Dive Master Sucks... (and also why it rules)

Wow if your dive master is carrying your stuff you got it easy. My instructor and dive master always said: your stuff (even if it was a rental) your problem, your responsibility. You forget something. Well, hoof it back to the shop and get it. It's a nice workout and you won't forget it ever again. I even ran back to the shop for someone else, sorry to say I'm with my dive master and instructor now.

Yep, more relaxed Dive Centres will be like that, you lift your own shit. Intensively busy centres with packed rosters are more inclined to do things themselves to keep up with the schedule, otherwise delays pile up really fast.

I second this, at least in California, the culture is you are responsible for your own gear. You carry it, you set it up, you make sure it’s all there and nothing is forgotten. My instructor would double check to make sure we didn’t screw up but the DM just made sure we singed wavers and had us hand our fins up to them when climbing up the ladder onto the boat

It is heaven for you guys for not having to carry the guests equipments. From where I am from we gotta give the guests "services". We prepare everything to the boat and the only thing they need to carry is themself 😂. Or their own equipments.

Although I have many certifications, including full cave and trimix, and I was trained at the instructor level, dive master was my single most favorite course of all, and is what led to the other advanced certs. I am a DMT in Hong Kong and while loving your video, just want to comment that not all shops or instructors will expect DM to carry gears. We do help the shop to load things on and off boat, but we do not carry tanks or gears for individual students unless they are really not able to. In fact my lovely instructors that I have assisted always come to help me with loading and carrying things (speaking of true gentlemen!!). So - dont let that factor put you off if you want to be a DM!!

as training to be a DM we were doing a rescue class for a local fire department. they found me and got me safely to the surface. as this class was in APR water was still cold i had my drysuit on. well we got to the surface and they were doing it all correct. then they were towing me in on my back when his hand slipped off my tank valve and he grabbed at me to resume the tow. he grabbed my drysuit neck seal also and resumed pulling me in as several gallons of 50 degree water entered my drysuit. well i did not like that and went nuts on the poor firemen. when it was all over the instructor looked at me and said great job "i never thought of becoming combative on the way in" well i handed him my drysuit and that night he put a new neck seal in it.

I started BSAC's instructor track, but I moved out of the country before I had the chance to get anywhere beyond Assistant instructor (which has a lot less responsibility than it sounds like). I liked being around students, sharing knowledge, teaching skills. I would like to get back onto an Instructor track, but I have no plans to do it for a living, so without a local club that needs an extra hand on weekends or something, it is not worth the expense.

The trainee DM and DM I had on my owd, aowd & dry suit speciality were both excellent. The DM shouldn't be lugging your kit around, you want to dive carry your own kit, BUT they are the ones hovering above you making sure you come to no harm. As mine had both clocked upwards of 800 dives a piece they also had plenty of useful information to impart.

In Australia at least, DM's also conduct DSD's. Also, other than dmt's it's very rare unfortunately to have a DM on a ow course. You are normally by yourself as an instructor unless you need to have more than 8 students on a course. The DM's are normally off doing dive guide or DSD's. May be a more competitive area on the qld gbr I guess. Also, DM's are qualified to conduct 'refresher' courses for certified divers who may not have been in the water for a while.

I'm a DM in Alaska and honestly the worst part about being a DM up here is the amount of time we spend in the water. We are first in last out setting down lines and floats. My longest day was five hours in 40 degree water while the next longest time was just over an hour and a half as students and instructors were doing rotations that we weren't privy to as DM's because we were weighting the next class while the instructors were debriefing the last one.

Great video and pointers. One thing l would like to add is dont be in a rush to become an instructor. The only difference is responsibility and being able to sell stuff. As a DM you get the opportunity to gain experience without the responsibility and pressures. Experienced Instructors really appreciate good DMs and value them more than any inexperienced instructor with only 200 dives. It's our responsibility to educate, support and push you so that you will also become a great instructor in the future.

In this time, I did approx 250 open water dives, plus many pool dives, I learnd how to handle a boat, how to deal with customers in the shop and how to recommend products. I learned how to fill cylinders, how to use the marine radio... I was out there almost every weekend, many days just as the boat-bitch, doing slave labour... my reward: smilling faces, happy divers. In 2006 I went to Bali and a PADI shop there offerd me a DM training & certification for US$ 800 in 7-10 days... Well and now? What is better?

@thorgrimb2416
@thorgrimb2416 4 года назад
Tribal Sorry you are so wrong. For many teaching is a passion and the greatest reward. Now I am new back to diving but the reason I stopped many years ago was because of my skiing I was qualifying as a ski instructor and yes I have had days and ski runs when just out skiing I will never ever forget and skied with some of the most famous skiers but the biggest buzz was always seeing my students face when something they thought was impossible something they thought they could never do finally click and they did it. That moment is priceless you have to experience it to realise what teaching/doing any sport is truly about. Not saying everyone needs to be a DM or instructor for most just diving for pleasure is enough, but your statement that once you start to teach something it gets less fun is what is so wrong. Lastly there is something useful about taking instructor courses at any level it makes you think outside the box and any quality learning will always make you in this case a better diver.

Long ago when I first started I went on every local trip that my dive shop had. Two weeks after being certified there was a trip to North Carolina to dive on the graveyard of the Atlantic. This one particular going to dive on was very deep and very technical and known to have sharks on it. It was a six-pack boat we were all from the same shop and I was outvoted on this. Started to go down and when I reach 120 ft that's when things went bad. My dive Master who I go with throughout my training realize what was happening to me and immediately grabbed me and took control. He physically put my hand back on the anchor line and started to put some air in my BC. Once we made a stop at 40 ft and then the rest of the time was at 15 ft. Once I started realizing what had happened my dive Master everything under control and started me on a second bottle of air that was kept at 15 feet. After 45 minutes I finally made my way to the surface. Immediately I had everybody's attention. I was very fortunate that my divemaster was there and knew me well enough to realize I was in trouble. Now the bad part. Once we return home I always stop back off at the dive shop to talk about what we did. When the shop owner and manager found out what wreck I was on and how deep I went we're not happy that he took me and another new diver down that deep. I tried to explain to them it wasn't his fault I even explained how he saved me. That is when things got worse when they found out what happened to me and why. they clearly made sure I knew that it wasn't my fault but I don't feel it was the fault of my dive Master he did not twist my arm or the other divers. I unfortunately after that they fired him. I have great respect for dive Masters and for a long time I was working on becoming one. It just didn't work out do to life getting in the way. I would one day very much love to start over and reach my goal.

Well as a divemaster, you are responsible to follow standard procedures and stay within the limits, which I guess the said divemaster did not... though it happens a lot that professionals get a bit too comfortable and exceed the limits, which most times end up fine, but IF an incident occur and emergency service, insurance etc. get involved, then you are in deep deeeeeeep trouble.
@KimonFrousios
@KimonFrousios 4 года назад
He planned badly, broke the rules, and put you in danger. That's why he was fired. He didn't rescue you from an unforeseeable emergency, he caused the emergency by taking you on a deep dive that you were not certified and trained for. The vote should have never included sites outside the limits of the least experienced participant. Always dive conservatively.

Overall, sport diving training has been dummied down to the point of no return. The only organization that appears to have maintained a higher than normal quality of instruction is LA County.

what is the different between dive master and master scuba diver.
@horrorkld9
@horrorkld9 4 года назад
Under PADI, Master Scuba Diver is a recreational certification that simply requires 50 dives, rescue training and any 5 specialties, but does not involve any specific training on its own. Divemaster is, instead, the first level of professional certification in the recreational diving world. It similarly requires rescue training, but is also partnered with specific training including more detailed study of the sciences surrounding diving, protecting students under training, being responsible for leading certified divers above and below water, and salesmanship. Further, the divemaster program includes additional skills testing. You are required to demonstrate all of the open water skills to a higher standard, as well as to perform a handful of more strenuous swims and skills. Finally, some level of search and recovery and deep diving training is required. Also, you need to pay annually to keep your divemaster status active, keep up to date with any changes to course materials if they are relevant to dives you are working, and depending on locale, consider paying for professional liability insurance.

Best and worst thing about being a DM, Rescue Course! Worst because you kit may well get lost, like my prescription mask... Best because you get to be panicked divers and go for regs and masks! Especially to the instructor during demonstrations. Go in with malicious intent on the instructor, once you have their reg and mask, then panic. Great fun

How have Ashley Young or Dele Alli not been mentioned in a topic about Dive Masters?🤣🤣. A pro of being a DM is that they only have to look after hot girls in bikinis........or at least that’s all my DM was good for. 🤫

as it sucks but not all.. im miss the moment the i can enjoy the ocean floor.. i mean eyes 80% on coral & fish , 20% buddy.. which when DM 90% on divers 10% divecom , dive plan and navi.. etc.. when in Dive canter DMs and instructor we like a family... more like father mother train a kids... That's not 'babysitting... think what to be instructor for dive center passion...

Why would the DM write down all that detailed info for each diver? If you want to keep track of your depth and how much gas you used (and you should) you need to be logging it yourself.
@chandler3706
@chandler3706 4 года назад
It's more of an accounting process. Making sure all divers are back on the boat before you leave. Max depths, dive time and gas in/out just additional info to pad out the accounting process

A few other countries do it but in the UK we are very much Health and Safety. A rescue diver has to be in the water during a course to be able to recover the instructor if something goes wrong with them
