I think in the past, Real Madrid also had a bout with injuries that may or may not have been related to weight lifting. IMO, the whole "kneesovertoes" bodyweight training is perfect (and the most I'd recommend) for footballers. It strengthens the most important (and vulnerable) areas without excessive wear and tear. The only outliers are probably CBs, target men, and maybe even GKs, but everyone else can lay off the weights.
