The idea of living, working and shopping all in the same area sounds great! ...As long as it is voluntary and people are to come and go as they please. As much as I would love to not have to drive very far for anything, I also don't want to live in a dirty city with rude, nosy neighbors. Arcosanti - failed. Esplanade - failed. North Scottsdale - fauled. For some people, utopia is living on 40 acres of land. We might even find, upon honest analysis, that families living on 5-10 acres, raising their own food (animal and vegetable), are more environmentally friendly that city dwellers.

without any new desalination plants in california, california and arizona are going to be impossible to sustain. the recent rains were the solution, but most of the water was not captured, it was allowed to flow into the pacific.

Not really a new idea. Most of the reason that Goodyear and Litchfield Park exist is because a certain tire and rubber company (guess which one) needed to grow Egyptian cotton for its tire cords outside of Egypt, which was expected to fall into enemy hands during World War One. As far as the water supply goes, I've always thought Arizona should have made a deal to purchase beach front property from Mexico around Rocky Point, and add it to the state. That way they could build nuclear power and de-salination plants like the rich countries have along the Persian Gulf. Hell, I think most of the power supplied to Phoenix by APS is nuclear, anyway. May as well get some distilled water out of the deal, too.

What humans need to do to supply the SW states with water is simple. However people will complain but we need water and more farm land to feed the world. Currently the Mississippi River and Missouri River flood areas every year. More fresh water dumbs into the ocean from these two rivers than anywhere else in North America. On the flip side we have the Grand Canyon which could hold enough water to supply everyone living in this area with more water than they could ever use. We need to take roughly 10% of the Mississippi and Missouri River and Dam up the Grand Canyon. This would make a ton of land in the South West now productive farm land. It would also supply green hydro power to the surrounding states. It will also give plenty of drinking water to all of Bill Gates Smart city and Vegas and all other cities. Currently the Colorado River dries up before it hits Mexico so America is stealing water from Mexico and doesn't care at all to solve this problem. But who cares they are Mexicans right? Plus everyone loves looking at the giant hole in the ground? Water isn't very useful anyways it's not like we need water to live or anything? We are humans and we can engineer anything we want so why don't we have a project that will generate millions of jobs and trillions of dollars for future farms, energy, water and much more.
