Probably the second most important drill in track and field (behind the A-Skip). Butt Kicks help develop great backside mechanics, enhance your running form, improve your hamstring strength, and ultimately lead to faster sprint times.

Over the years I actually stopped doing the traditional butt kicks for this but my heel comes up and still hits my glutes… to me it is better and allows the glutes to contract more while extending the quad. Keeping the mechanics similar while causing full extensions/contractions in the muscles. Just like weight training you do lighter lifts that are lift specific to not only warm the muscles but makes the muscle recruitment aware of the bio mechanical movement.

This is for performance. Traditional kicks are for warming up.

We don't advise ever doing 'traditional butt kicks' as they reinforce bad sprinting mechanics.

@@OutperformOfficial what about mid to long distance runners because backside mechanics and bringing your heel to your butt with a smaller knee drive are a big part of distance running form?

I have questions Can I use running shoes to train sprint like energy rod and carbon plate shoes Can I jog in 4 pace or in other word interval to train stamina for 400m Do running train killing speed? Last, can you show 400 training to get better on it?

You can use running shoes with features like energy rods and carbon plates for sprint training; just be aware many of them are designed to just use in races so they may wear out quickly. To build endurance for the 400m it's better to focus on intervals, hill sprints etc. vs longer runs. Since it's mostly anaerobic that is the system you want to focus on. You don't want to log a ton of miles with poor technique.

It sounds like you might have pushed a bit too hard with the butt kicks drill. It's important to ensure proper form to avoid strain on your knees. Consider easing into the drill next time and perhaps consult with a coach to ensure you're doing it correctly.

@@OutperformOfficial Thank you. Its pure gold!! I Dream to look like Azeem! Someone told me those sprinters are tall with long limbs, that's why they look so great in movement. My short 5'3" body will never be as sleek looking, but if I can learn proper technique I can gain speed and power which would be a plus.
