There's always a handful of people who get upset when I make these posts because they think I'm discouraging people from doing cardio.
At the end of the day I'm just giving the facts and people can do with that information whatever they want.
I always include the fact that I still recommend performing regular cardio of some kind for general health purposes, and I'm in no way trying to encourage anyone to skip it. (I'm literally writing this after having just finished a session)
However, there are a ton of people whose primary goal is to lose body fat and who end up on the wrong path by trying to create their deficit through actively burning calories with exercise and then only loosely monitoring their diet, when they'd usually be much better off to flip these priorities around.
Yes, there are always exceptions, and if someone's energy expenditure is very high (this is usually the case for people who have some kind of active daily hobby or do frequent sports/martial arts etc.) and their diet is reasonable to begin with then it might still work out just fine.
I'm speaking to the majority here, and most people are not performing such a high volume of cardio that it's going to have a massive impact on things.
Not to mention that if building/maintaining muscle is a top priority, you ideally wouldn't want to be doing tons and tons of cardio anyway since beyond a certain point it will start interfering with weight training recovery and performance.
Do your cardio. But if the goal is fat loss, controlling calorie intake will be the most important factor for the majority.

I'd add that the missing part in a lot of fat loss programs is that gaining muscle mass increases the number of calories your body requires. I found putting on muscle made losing weight so much easier because I didn't need to go on an extreme diet because my body is naturally burning more calories just for maintenance of the extra muscle I gained.

@@lalilola3770 Yes - but once you get to large amounts of muscle mass or very low body fat percentages it becomes much harder to continue gaining muscle mass on a cut. That’s why people shift to lifting at maintenance or bulk by eating in excess followed by cuts. So keep working on leaning down as long as you can, but if your progress in strength or muscle mass gains slows you’ll have to reassess whether you want to keep at a deficit to lose more weight or increase your calories to help muscle growth.
@rabios9911
@rabios9911 2 года назад
Its true but I think you and many others vastly over estimate how much calories muscles expend. A pound of muscle mass will not even burn 10 calories to maintain itself. So realistically even if you spend your whole life lifting and put on like 50 pounds it will at most increase your maintenance by 400-450. Now mind you that is not a small amount by any means but you are not getting any significant deficit in the short term. More so what helped you is just the calories expenditure from going to the gym and working out and being just more active in general which also will improve your quality of life and increase your neat. And the small expenditures add up.

So, if you’re doing cardio because you enjoy it, don’t let anyone stop you. Videos like this are definitely targeted more at people doing cardio for fat loss. 2. Stop doing cardio before a workout. 5 mins of walking/running on the treadmill won’t kill you. But I’ve had relative, friends, and clients who think that it’s just as helpful/effective to do the cardio training before HIIT and/or weight/resistance training. It just makes you exhausted and doesn’t burn that many calories. So, if you’re doing it coupled with other exercises for fat loss, do those first. You can do the cardio after.

Came here to say this. I used to be very fat and now I’m in better shape than 99% of people my age. Diet is far more important, and while I still do cardio to cut after a point I just eat more. I used to do 3 hours on the treadmill all together a day. I would inevitably binge food at night and wake up in the middle of the night to eat more.

People don't realize cardio is what we are best at as humans. We literally evolved to chase prey for long periods of time. We are very efficient at it so it's not great as a fat loss tool. Building muscle that burns more energy and more importantly eating healthy are the best tools hands down.

Adding cardio makes it super easy for me to loose weight over time. 2-3 45-75' cardio sessions a week add up to 1-2000kcal without any big spikes in hunger, because of low intensity and durarion. Even a 30' run every day creates the necessary deficit for healthy fat loss - just stick to whatever you ate before. Improved cardio and health are great on top.

Swimming is a great alternative to normal cardio. It doesn’t wear down the joints and you can work out your entire body. You can just swim just for cardio and it’ll help burn calories as well as provide some resistance to muscles. If you swim competitively it’ll be like a HIIT workout and a resistance workout added on. Competitive swimmers don’t just “swim” throughout their entire practice time, rather, they have multiple sets that includes warming up, drills, targeted sets such as using fins to strengthen legs and kicking or pull buoy and paddles to strengthen the arms and pulling. In addition to that, there’s the main set that is normally the most intensive part of the workout, and often works like a HIIT workout where you have to put in a very high effort and swim in specific intervals where it’s quite common to only have seconds of rest. I strongly suggest swimming as a great alternative to normal cardio if people want to try it out or are simply unsatisfied/don’t like running and stuff.

I’m now trying keto and the weight is coming off quite quickly with no cardio at the moment. The fat & protein fill you up so it’s easier to stick to a calorie deficit, because you’re not constantly hungry. I’m going to try adding some cardio back in though for the benefits of feeling fitter, rather than for the weight loss, but not sure how I’ll get on with low cards 😬🤞🏻

It's like this...comprehend this carefully. No big issue can be tackled in a simple way, nonetheless i'm going to simplify in point form, in the order of importance: 1) "The right diet" 2) Any form of aerobic exercises for a min of 40mins - 1hour per session. 3) Weight training for the basic body parts and muscles. 4) Cardio for min session of 30mins and min frequency of 2-3 times a week. The confusion is always on the aerobic and cardio. If you understand the efficacy and the mechanics, you can cross them effectively on the same day within an efficient volume or time period. NO.2 AND NO.3 CAN BE INTERCHANGED DEPENDING TO ONE'S CONDITION AND GOAL.HENCE, CARDIO IS IMPERATIVELY NECESSARY FOR FAT LOSS. AND ALL THOSE 4 ELEMENTS MUST BE EXERCISED.

Some of the information on this video is just wrong. For example, the idea that you don’t burn many calories. This is true for unfit people, however, the more fit you before the more calories you can burn. For example, an unfit person could barely push out 60-80 watts on a bike for an hour. That’s 216-288 calories. But a fit person with good endurance may be able to do 300 watts per hour. That’s 1080 cal per hour. The more fit you get the more calories you burn even doing moderate zone 2 cardio. And calorie compensation is not a large amount to total calories burned. On net balance you’re still burning a ton the more fit you get. I do 2-3 hours of biking per day on top of lifting weights six days per week and I do about 300 watts for 2-3 hours. Really over 2-3k calories. Now tell me that’s not a lot of calories.
